Describe some of the leadership responsibilities that come along with being co-captain of your cheerleading team, Homecoming Queen, and any other roles that you have. Some responsibilities that come with being a cheer co-captain include being a role model for the team and setting an example. As co-captain, I help make some decisions to help better the team. As Vice President of Student Council, I help make decisions regarding pep rallies and planning the homecoming dance. I am also Secretary for my class. Last year I was involved in planning the prom, and now I am helping design graduation announcements.
Tell me about some of the academic and athletic activities you take part in and how do you balance all of them? I participate in various activities including cheerleading (co-captain), track, cross country, dance, National Honor Society, Student Council (Vice President), Senior Class Officer (Secretary) and Spanish club. Although I am very busy in many sports and extracurricular activities, I am still able to balance school, my family and my social life. I use a planner and try my best to plan ahead and stay organized. There are times when I have conflicts and have to prioritize what is most important.
What is the most important leadership lesson that you have learned?
I think the most important leadership lesson that I have learned so far is that as a leader you are a role model and you are setting expectations for the team. I believe that every person reacts differently to different leadership and therefore a leader needs to learn their team’s individual’s strengths and weaknesses to help keep the team working together at their highest potential. In other words, there is no way to “blanket” lead a team because every team and person on the team is different.
What are some qualities that you believe make you a leader, and how are they incorporated in your everyday life? Some qualities that I believe make a leader are accountability, confidence, and compassion. As a leader, accountability is important because as a leader, you are a role model and your team needs to know that they can count on you. Outside of leadership, it is important to be accountable to your friends and family, as well as your teachers. Confidence helps make a leader be able to show that you are sure of your decisions as a leader, and compassion helps a leader be more aware of others’ needs, which helps the team work better together.
What will you be doing after High School? I will be attending Butler University in the fall to study biochemistry. I plan on going to medical school to hopefully become a pediatrician.
