What is one of your favorite memories from soccer?
I have several good memories, and I am always in good spirits after winning a game, but if I were to pick one memory it would be winning the 6A state championship in 2019. My high school soccer team was going through playoffs in the spring of my sophomore year. We had reached the state championship. The stakes were high, so we were all really nervous for the game. I will never forget my excitement after winning. My entire team celebrated and we were smiling the entire way home.

What does leadership mean to you, and what do you think makes a good leader?

To me, leadership means using your abilities and status to help others around you become the type of person they want to be. Too many "leaders" use their role in a negative way when leadership should involve helping others grow mentally by working together to achieve common goals. A good leader has flexibility with their outputs and is willing to work well with others. Leaders must also be selfless and put themselves in a position to mentor and help those around them. In my opinion, a leader is often defined by those around them.

What are your roles in Assisteens of Norman and what do you love most about it? What should people know if they want to get involved?
Assisteens is the teenage auxiliary of the Assistance League non-profit organization. I have been a part of the Norman Assisteens since August 2015, and I have been on the board since August 2018. I have served as the fall and spring fundraiser chairs, and I am currently the Operation School Bell chair. The thing I love most about Assisteens is the environment created at every Assisteens event. Everyone is involved and really cares about what is going on and helping ease burdens in our community. To get involved you can search up your local Assisteens chapter online. Hopefully there is a local Assisteens chapter near you and you can sign up for the next school year!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't assume anything is guaranteed. I have worked really hard to get in the position I am today, and one of my biggest regrets is assuming that I was guaranteed something. Nothing in life is absolutely guaranteed and we must not forget that. We need to remember to constantly work hard and give our best efforts if we want to be successful. We can think we are guaranteed to win a certain award or get a certain job and this mentality can cause us to produce less effort. A sense of entitlement is dangerous, so always give your best.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?

How important life choices are and how they could impact your life later. Learning from other people’s bad decisions showed me how to make better decisions throughout my life.

What are your biggest struggles and how do you combat them?
My biggest struggle is dealing with stress. If I ever feel overwhelmed, I make lists and organize my thoughts, then I try to relax and tackle my list one by one. This way I can visualize everything I'm accomplishing all while knocking things off of my list.

How did the pandemic impact you during your senior year of high school?
The pandemic impacted me in so many ways. This year has brought on so many obstacles for me to face. With the schools shutting down because of Covid-19, I had to stay on top of my schoolwork, care for my 4-month-old sister, and help my 6 year old sister with her schoolwork as well. Although it can get stressful sometimes, I know I can push through it. After my senior year I know that I will be a stronger person.

What volunteer work do you do and why is it so important to you?
I participate in volunteer activities within my school. I think it is very important to be involved within the school because it's my way of giving back to my community!

What would you say is the best way of making important decisions now to plan for the future?
The best way to make important decisions now for the future is to always choose what's best for you! Follow directions, help others in need, and if life gets you down always keep pushing through it.

Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The nomination: Juliana is the most well rounded child I know. She balances SCA, being class president, cheerleading, field hockey, leadership positions in honor societies and so many clubs, all while maintaining a 4.1 GPA, volunteering all over the hampton roads at Filipino events, Navy sponsored Character Breakfasts, elementary school events, bible school, and so much more. You really do a LOT! Tell us more about your leadership positions in your clubs.

Kellam High School is full of so many clubs and activities for students to take advantage of. For me, I wanted to try everything out and see where my passions lay. I am a cheerleader at my school and was the captain of the JV cheerleading team my Sophomore year.

I have been my class President since my Freshman year. I love planning different events for my class, organizing fundraisers, and planning memorable events such as graduation and prom.
In SCA I am an executive board member, and currently running for Vice President. SCA creates events for the school, such as announcements, homecoming, casholas, spirit weeks, and decorates the halls for holidays and awareness months.

In NHS I was the Junior Advisor, and currently in the running for Vice President. I helped organize and sign people in for NHS sponsored events, I helped find volunteer opportunities, and I helped come up with meeting agendas. I was a member of the Cultural Club at my school and helped plan the Cultural Festival, where I was able to Hawaiian dance and share my love of dance with everyone.
I recently joined the Varsity field Hockey team last year and will be captain this year if we have a season. I am a Drama Thespian and have participated in numerous shows and musicals, and have even helped at the Summer Drama Camp and participated in Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat, which is where you collect cans instead of candy during Halloween.

I am also a mentor for the Freshman through this program called advisory at my school. I want to be remembered as a student who promoted diversity and unity and inspire others to try new things and change the status quote.

Why is leadership so important to you? How would you describe your leadership style?

Throughout the years I have been involved with so many leadership workshops. I attended workshops at local high schools when I was in middle school, had the opportunity to go to VBLW, which is a weeklong leadership camp sponsored by the city for all VBCPS high schools, was a leader for the citywide Elementary School Leadership Workshop, and was a delegate and staff member for my high school’s leadership workshop.

Leadership has and always will be a passion of mine. Leadership, to me, is being a strong advocate and role model for your community and peers. Leadership is about guiding others to an overall goal. Leadership is an act of service. You serve your community and organizations. I believe that strong leadership is all about attitude. Keeping a positive attitude, even in difficult times creates a space that is inclusive and welcoming for all to be a part of.

As a leader you are looked up to, so it is very important that you are always giving the best version of yourself. As a leader it is important to establish trust, diligence, and grit amongst your peers because these three factors create a strong atmosphere ready to take on anything! I believe that my leadership style can be described as affiliative. I care so much about people and their emotions. I think it’s the best to understand people and get to know their story. You can create a friendship and an understanding for their strengths and weaknesses, and what amazing contributions they can bring to the group.

Tell us more about your platform for asthma awareness.
When I was 10 years old I competed for the title of Miss Virginia Beach’s Outstanding Preteen 2013. For the Miss America organization, contestants must create a platform for something they are passionate about and raise awareness. I wanted to create a platform to fundraise for something and inform people about a topic that isn’t often talked about. I created “Asthma Awareness- control the disease”, and “Juliebug’s Bear Hugs”, which were both ways I was able to fundraise and spread awareness.

I read to many elementary schools throughout the years discussing the topics of air quality and the effects of pollution on lung development and breathing ability. I read a children’s book from the EPA called “Why is Coco Orange?”. It was so amazing to see how excited these elementary schoolers were to find out the air quality each day to make sure it’s okay to play outside, especially for their fellow classmates who have asthma.

“Juliebug’s Bear Hugs” was a fundraiser I had to raise money to purchase asthma and allergy friendly teddy bears for children hospitalized with chronic lung problems and hospitalized because of asthma. This meant a lot to me because as a child I would constantly be in and out of the hospital for issues regarding my breathing. Playing sports still affects my asthma today, but I want to inspire others to not let health problems control their life. With asthma, it is important to know your body, know how to control it, and know ways to prevent an asthma attack. I hope that I can continue this platform and give more awareness to my community, and make it known. I want to fundraise more towards helping those who have trouble affording the medications needed to control their asthma.

Tell us about the Rainbow Camper award, and how you got it.

The Navy Seal foundation sponsors children whose parents are a part of the Special Warfare to go to camp every year. I went to this camp from age eight until I was twelve years old. It was the highlight of my summer and it was so exciting making new friends and creating bonds. At camp there are numerous activities to do there. There are land activities like zip lining, riflery, archery, climbing tower, field, martial arts, skateboarding, and so much more. In water there is sailing, banana boating, and kayaking. Each activity has levels going from Blue to green based on expertise. I didn’t know that a Rainbow camper even existed until my second to last year of camp.

I had levels from over the years, and when I saw my score sheet, I was determined to earn Rainbow Camper before my last year. I worked hard and got out of my comfort zone with many activities, such as riflery and skateboarding. Every day, with the support of my cabin mates, went to activities to earn levels. My last task was to go down a half pipe and stay on the board to earn Green and finally get the title of Rainbow Camper. I worked hard and kept falling and eventually had to stop because I hurt my leg so bad. I was so upset and hurt. I was determined to change my attitude and come back again next year determined to go down the half pipe.

The following year, the second day of camp, with the help of one of my past counselors falling and showing me to face my fears again, I finally did it! To me this moment meant everything to me. It inspired me to work hard and take risks out of my comfort zone once in a while. Most importantly it taught me to be that role model that my counselor was to me, and to help inspire others to go after and accomplish their dreams.

Pick a place you volunteer at, and tell us a favorite memory of your time there.
My favorite volunteer experience would have to be volunteering at the Elementary Schools for their Fall and Winter Festivals. I absolutely loved these events growing up and know how important it is for each child made the experience even more memorable and exciting. I was able to face paint, do crafts, and get plates and supplies ready to decorate cookies. Face painting was so fun and being involved in the fine arts, I was certainly able to keep up with all their wants of fairy princesses, superheros, and emojis. This was such an amazing experience and really created that holiday spirit I love and enjoy so much!

What choices have you made and what things have you experienced in life that have helped you grow as a person and in faith?  Some experiences in my life that have helped me grow as a person and in my faith was when both of my grandparents on my mother's side of the family passed away from cancer. These two events were extremely hard for me and the only thing that gave me true peace over those two situations and helped me to get through it was God. Those events helped strengthen my faith and trust in the Lord, because it showed me to trust him even when you do not understand what he is doing at the moment but know that he does everything for a reason as well as has a plan and a purpose for each of our lives and the things that happen. Without the Lord I would not be anywhere near the person I am today, by no means am I perfect because none of us are the only one that is perfect is God, but if I did not have him i would not have the strength to face even half of the bad trials life throws at me but because I know the Lord as my savior I am able to overcome the trials with his help.

How had your grandma influenced you and impacted your life?
My grandma impacted my life by the way she fought her battle of ovarian cancer. She was incredibly strong and never gave up. I watched how the cancer affected her physical health and how it made her very weak, but it never broke her spirit and she never questioned the Lord during it. She had courage, even in the hardest time of her life, she gave it her all and fought as hard as she could.

Tell me more about how you have worked with your local dog rescue to take in injured and neglected dogs. What is the process like for you?
When I was in elementary school my mother and another lady started a rescue group in my area called Columbia County Animal Rescue. We would weekly go to our local animal controls and take the dogs into our rescue where they would then be fostered. Our two local animal controls were high kill so when they would get overcrowded the dogs would be euthanized to make space. All dogs that would come into our rescue would be taken to the vet for medical needs and to make sure they are healthy. Then we would give it to one of the people in our rescue group to foster the dog and take care of it until it gets adopted to a new home. After we would put the dog up for adoption on our Facebook and Instagram page and wait for someone to ask about it. On many occasions my parents and I would be fostering multiple dogs at once and keeping them all in our home along with our own dogs as well. When a person is interested in one of our dogs, we always do background checks and make sure that the person has a home that would be a good environment for the dog. If the person checks out, then we would let the person take the dog and see how it goes for a couple of days and if it goes well they can adopt it. Fostering dogs has been such an amazing experience being able to take care of and help these dogs that deserve the best and happiest life.

What do you love about working with kids and what do you do when you work with them?
What I love about working with kids is how they will look up to you and you can be a good role model for them and set a good example and how much joy and laughter they bring. I mainly work with kids through my church, I am a leader at Vacation Bible School and help in Kids Worship, which is where all the kids from Pre-k to 4th grade go during church. At Vacation Bible School I am assigned a class and I am with them for the week sharing the word of God. In Kids Worship I am in small groups with different grade levels and we play games with them, learn scripture, and learn more about the bible.

Tell me more about winning the Youth National Arabian Horse Championship, what that meant to you, and what the competition process was like!
Winning my Youth National Arabian Horse Championship was very special to me and rewarding because it showed me that if you set your mind to something and really work hard and train for it you can accomplish anything. I trained with my coach all year almost every day getting ready for that competition and when I won one of the National Titles I was proud that I had a goal, set out to achieve it, and I attained that goal. The competition lasted a week and you would have classes throughout the week. The first classes would be qualification classes which normally have over 100 riders in them and if you made the cut you would be able to move on to the next round which was the final round for the National Title. In that final round the number of people in the class was cut down to around 20 or 30 and of those 30 you would have 8 that would get a Top Ten and then another person would get a Reserve Champion and one would become Champion, winning the national title.

Photography by Inspiring Teens Magazine
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sierra Zaccagnino, Editor of Inspiring Teens Magazine, is a creative and natural leader with unwavering determination. In school she is her class’ public relations officer, the VP of the National English Honor Society, an FBLA competitor and voting delegate, and a team leader of the freshman mentor program. She does this all while maintaining a high academic standard of being in the top 10% of her 400+ student class. After college, she aims to pursue a career in advertising and marketing.

How did you get involved with Inspiring Teens Magazine and what does your role as editor entail? What do you like most about being involved with so many teens from all over the world through it?
I initially wrote articles and participated in photoshoots for the magazine starting my freshman year of high school. Over the years I have had a couple of ideas on how to improve the magazine and keep things fresh, so I was very happy to accept the editor position at the start of my junior year. My primary responsibility is to review all interview submissions from nominated teens and edit their writing, without altering their stories. One of my favorite parts of my position is leading our online international meetings where members come together to develop leadership conferences and global service projects. I love getting to know and speak with the inspiring teens who I read so much about!

What do you like so much about being a leader?
Being a leader is important to me because I have the opportunity to foster a collaborative community and I get to uplift others. People look up to you as a leader, and I enjoy carrying that responsibility.

What are your duties as a class’ public relations officer?
As the public relations officer, I control the class profile on social media platforms and use these platforms, as well as regular print media, to share and receive information with the student population. I also work with the other student officers to plan and run popular events such as the Homecoming Dance, Junior Prom, Fall Festival, and Senior Prom.

How do you balance extra circulars and your leadership positions while maintaining top 10% in your class?
Most of my extracurriculars and leadership positions revolve around subjects that I already work on in school, so I like to view these activities as extensions of my learning outside the classroom. Additionally, I find it best to take challenging classes that you’re truly interested in because then you will have more motivation to learn and excel. For example, I choose to take more English and history courses because I know that I’m willing to put in the effort for subjects I love.

Picture

What kind of fashion do you like to design, why?
I like to blend contemporary and artistic fashion because there is something incredibly satisfying about wearing clothes that I’ve designed myself, but it is also rewarding to see more experimental ideas come to life. I was fortunate enough to spend some of last summer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago learning all about fashion design through the lens of fabric manipulation and dimensional art.

What is your favorite kind of story, why?
While I do have a soft spot for certain historical tales, my favorite type of stories are primarily realistic or dystopian fiction. In general, I enjoy a book with good character development, appropriate pacing, unique point (or points) of view, and a distinctive voice. Some memorable books that I’ve read recently are Disappearing Earth and Normal People.

How does everything you do keep you so focused on your final goal?
Storytelling is a big part of my identity given that I often incorporate it in all my creative and even academic ventures. I know that I can use a strength like this in the future within an advertising or marketing career because I will need to analyze situations from multiple viewpoints. Knowing this furthermore encourages me to continue expressing myself and seek new experiences from which to learn.

Being a senior of course I was devastated knowing the things I have looked forward to for so long such as my senior prom and graduation have been canceled but through all this rather than spending my time being upset I have choose to spend it creating a better me by focusing on my heath as well as the ultimate goal of becoming a literature professor. And as I am sad I am also so blessed for all the opportunities my school has provided me with and I have learned so much from such as being involved with soccer, track, link crew, and our school news; good day MLK.

The Nomination: Isaiah Martin personifies the word inspirational! He has been active in many activities including President Student Council President at his Vo-Tech, FCA, FBLA, Skills-USA, Health Careers Club and band.
Outside of school, he’s a drummer for the worship team, helps at the monthly food drive, works with the church mission team and at MISSION:IMPACT each summer to inspire other teens to serve.

What inspired you to get so involved in your church and have such strong faith?
I've been in church all my life but the reason why I'm so involved in church and have faith is because I love God.

Now I know that you are a drummer in your worship team, how long ago did you start drumming, and what does being in the worship team involve?
I started drumming when I was 14. Being a part of the worship team involves staying at a constant level of being humble. Give glory to God before we try and take the glory for ourselves.

Picture
Photography by Light of the World Photography

When you work with the church mission team and at MISSION:IMPACT what do you do there?
During our mission camps I am part of our camp worship team and I'm a team leader. "Tropical Ninjas!" Also, my teams really did more of the grunt work because it was an all-male team.

What influenced you to complete the CNA program and start working at your local hospital?
My teacher Mrs. Sam is the biggest part of this. She worked on this apprenticeship three years and I was very blessed to be the first to do it. She pushed me all the way to the finish line.

What does work at the hospital involve? What jobs do you do there when you volunteer?

The hospital involves a list that I don't know if I can type it all out. As a CNA I help the nurses do anything they need me to do, I chart how much people eat, drink, and use the restroom. I also lift, move, and clean patients as need be to help prevent pressure ulcers.

My favorite part about volunteering is seeing the smiles on the faces of those you are helping. When you see the pure joy on their faces, you know that you are impacting their lives for the better and making a lasting difference in your community. No matter how large or small of a difference you make, every change matters in someone’s life.

What is your favorite volunteer project you have done?
My favorite volunteer project that I’ve done was a fundraiser I started for families affected by autism. The proceeds went to a resource center for autism and all together we raised $4,986 to support our local families. I got the idea for this project by spending time with one of my teacher’s sons who are both autistic. Seeing them both at their best and worst made me passionate to bring awareness and help bring more resources to our small community.

What types of sports do you play and how did you get interested in them?

I play volleyball, basketball, and track and field. I became interested in them for many reasons. I grew up with two siblings and many neighbors kids, while living next to a park, I was always outside running around. I also live in a town that is known for their sports. We have amazing coaching staffs that have built programs that draw crowds in to support us. Through sports I have gained so much beyond a healthy lifestyle. I have gained leadership qualities that even allowed me to be voted team captain of my basketball team. On top of that I have gained more family members that will be a part of my life for many years to come.

Tell me more about the 2020 senior rep program, what does that involve?

The senior rep program was through Candid Touch Photography and Design, whom I’ve grown to love like my own family. Mandi, the photographer, selected me and 4 other girls to help promote her business through taking once in a lifetime photos and posting them to our social media. Unique shoots such as milk baths, rock bands, and a real life princess, both helped get Candid Touch’s name out there and gave us both memories and photos we will never forget. On top of the photo shoots we were able to have our senior pictures taken. Personally, this program has given me so much confidence and has shown me who I can truly be. I cannot thank Mandi enough for being such an amazing person and for starting this program for teens in my area.

What is the best thing about always getting to inspire and help people?

The best thing about my opportunities to inspire and help others is the feeling I get that I’ve made a difference in somebody else’s life. Knowing that I’ve helped make someone's life easier brings a sense of pride to myself and my life.

Why do you think it is important to get involved?
I feel it is very important to be involved in high school. I can’t imagine it any other way. I love being around my friends and giving back to our school and community. Being involved helps you learn how to manage your time wisely and makes you a more well-rounded responsible person.

What kind of leadership opportunities have you had?
I have been on the student council since middle school. I enjoy representing my class and being involved in school events. I am also an executive officer of Key Club. As treasurer, I handle the financial aspect of this community service organization. Key Club(student branch of Kiwanis) is a student-led organization whose goal is to encourage leadership through serving others. This organization has given me opportunities to volunteer with children's sports as well as many other community events. I am also the treasurer of SkillsUSA. SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving high school, college and middle school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. As a Junior, I was chosen to represent my class as a College Ambassador. This position allowed me the opportunity to help guide underclassmen through their educational path. During my 11th grade year, I was also chosen to represent my class at Missouri's Girls State. This experience allowed me to learn about law and politics while growing my leadership experience.

Why do you want to be an occupational therapist?
I have always wanted to help children with specific needs to learn to navigate everyday life. I want to be in the medical field but hope to do school-based occupational therapy or work at a children’s hospital.

What are 3 adjectives that describe you?
Kind
Hardworking
Positive

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I think the hardest thing I have ever accomplished is some of the nursing skills I did to earn my Certified Nursing Assistant certification. I knew these skills would give me a foundation to better myself as an OT student.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be involved, make memories, get along with others and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I hope to be working toward my master's or doctorate in OT while working and gaining hands-on job experience.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Camping, spending time outdoors and being on any body of water! I love the ocean, the lake, the river or the pool!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes, Juggling. I was the feature twirler in high school and hope to twirl in college. I like twirling fire and learning new tricks. My favorite thing to do is juggling multiple batons or anything I can get my hands on.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present on learning a trade. Although I am college-bound, I feel that learning a skill or trade is a great way to be educated. I think so many feel that college-bound students cannot go to a trade school or that trade school education is not sufficient. There is a great need for trade school careers and education. I am so glad I chose to start my career path in a vocational school and look forward to using my skills to work in college.

3 Things on your bucket list:
Travel! I want to visit all 50 states as well as other countries. I also want to climb a mountain and volunteer to help with injured marine life.

Who do you find inspiring?
My 5-year-old cousin. He was born with one hand. His other partial hand has only two digits. He amazes me every day and he never lets challenges hold him back. He is all boy and brings a smile to my face every time I am with him. He has inspired me to become an occupational therapist.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I inspire others by overcoming adversity. There have been times, I have lost an election or been the underdog in the competition, but I have prevailed under pressure.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I love dogs and hope to be the handler of a therapy dog someday.

Who inspired you to get so involved in your school and community? Why?
Myself! I knew from when I was in Elementary school that I wanted to be the President of school clubs to hopefully make an impact and a change in my school and community.

What is the biggest way you inspire others to get involved in their school and community?
I try to inspire others by setting good examples daily and I always try to do what is right, no matter what issue arises. I am President of all the clubs at my school and I really try to be positive and encourage other kids to get involved in our activities.

What inspired you to push through and overcome your knee injury?
It is my Senior year and I knew I had no choice but to overcome it and push forward to get over it. Time was not going to stand still and wait for me to get better. I was eager to resume my school obligations like cheerleading and the Pom/Dance team. I reminded myself every day that my injury was only temporary and that I need to be grateful that surgery was a success and that I was on the mend because others everywhere are dealing with greater struggles.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

What is it like being involved in so many activities such as cheer, FBLA, and many more?

It is very fun, busy and also at times, stressful! I wouldn't trade it for anything else though because of how many amazing opportunities and people I have gotten to know and meet and become close to. My schedule is always packed with either practice, fundraising, competitions, games, etc. It has helped me to realize to make each moment count. Time passes whether you're sitting still or going non-stop. Why not make the most of it?!!

Because you have so much going on in your life, what helps you stay balanced?
My family, especially my mom. We are very organized people and she helps keep me on task and always makes sure I'm ready for each day by going over our agendas for the day and double checking that I have everything I need, whether it be uniforms, practice clothes, fundraising forms, money for activities, etc.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Public Speaking is by far the hardest thing I have overcame and accomplished. When I was young, I was super nervous and skittish to do anything that put me in the spotlight alone. Piano recitals or singing in front of a group would make me break out in hives and be so nervous! Once I signed up for the District FBLA Public Speaking competition my Freshman year, I was determined that I would and could overcome this fear. I practiced for hours on that speech and ended up placing first that year and every year since then. Now I love speaking in front of others and always jump at the chance to do so.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

My advice would be to be involved in all that is possible. Take risks, even though things may seem scary. Don't be afraid to always be yourself and stand up for what you believe in.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I hope to be a social worker, helping and impacting as many people as I can. I have interned and assisted with young homeless and substance abuse mothers and their children over the Summer and I want to try and help people like that. I also see myself starting a family and being happy as well as successful.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to sing and listen to all different kinds of music.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I'm double jointed. I can distort my fingers and arms in all sorts of weird positions.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep a planner year-round that lets me keep track of all of my tasks and events that I have scheduled. Whenever I feel stressed, I make a list with short term tasks. That helps keep me from getting overwhelmed and keeps me organized on a day to day basis.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are to visit Paris, go for a ride in a hot air balloon, and attend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade one year.

Victoria Hall - Texas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Brenda Welke
Photography by Kenneth Siscon Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Victoria Hall has spent the past four years advocating, raising money and awareness for victims of human trafficking by partnering with the nonprofit organization Dresscember. At the age of sixteen she traveled to India with the organization YouCanFreeUs that rescues victims of human trafficking. She went into locations delivering care packages and planting seeds for rescue missions. She also met and worked with survivors in rehabilitation programs. Victoria sees the light and hopes all she meets will see that light and her fight to bring awareness through her passions to this cause.

Photography by Kenneth Siscon Photography

How did you know you wanted to help and advocate for human trafficking victims?

I have always been the kind of person to stand up when I see injustice but it wasn't until my freshman year of high school when I truly grew a passion for the rights of human trafficking victims. When I connected the resources that I held I knew I had to speak up and make it known.

What different kinds of work have you done for human rights?
For the past four years, I have advocated through a non-profit campaign called Dressember. I wear a dress each day in December raising money to fund all sorts of rescue and rehabilitation needs as well as starting conversations through the dresses. I have also traveled across the world to India on a rehabilitation trip for rescued survivors of human trafficking. But my biggest work is the conversations daily I have with friends, family and through my social media bringing the conversation to light and creating awareness all over.

Tell me more about going to India with YouCanFreeUs. What was this experience like?
India was a trip that forever changed me. This trip with YouCanFreeUs showed me the fruit of the work being done. I was able to see these men and women who have been rescued from human trafficking and are on their way to becoming superheroes in their own life. Alone the conversation had given me more of a fire to help bring awareness and do what I can with my resources to help rescue from this modern-day slavery.

Picture
Photography by Katie Skrepnek

What have you learned from meeting with the survivors of human trafficking?

I have re-learned the lesson that no matter how deep or far gone you think your life may be, there's always a light at the end of that tunnel. You can be in the darkest of situations and there is still a way to get out but not only get out, but there is also a way to achieve your dreams and live the life you have always wanted. You are not defined by where you have been; these men and women may have been victims of trafficking but to me and any other advocate you speak to they are true survivors and an inspiration to us all.

What's the biggest way the average human can help raise awareness and help human trafficking victims?
Conversation. This can be with friends, family, people at school or work, or even online through social media. You would be surprised by the number of people who just don't know and are unaware of these events still occurring today. So my biggest tip to all is just having an open conversation and being aware of the signs and possibilities as this happens everywhere, not just across the world.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have yet to accomplish has to be my academic achievements. I was diagnosed with ADD and Dyslexia at an extremely young age, I was also placed in the Gifted and Talented (GT) program making me twice gifted, this brought upon more struggles than I could ever imagine. I was bullied constantly throughout elementary, middle, and high school by both students and some teachers. This was extremely difficult for me to understand and made me feel worthless. I felt like I would never make it in life. My hopes of graduating from high school felt small and less of having the possibility of achieving a further education. Fast forward to now my senior year, I have spent the last two years pursuing an online education that gave me the resources as well as the time to achieve my dreams and let my talents sore and fly high. I Graduated a semester early January 2020 and will go into college with 24 hours of credits completed. This alone has been a great achievement and will always hold close to my heart but I will forever be proud of the fact that I got into all colleges I applied for and will be attending my dream school of 10 years, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Los Angeles Fall 2020.

Picture
Photography by Katie Skrepnek

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Work hard, stay humble, and be true to yourself. It is and will always be a difficult path when standing up for what you believe in but you will ALWAYS find the good in every situation. You will have people who support you and people who will want to bring you down but knowing your truth and the good you have created in the world will mean more than any negative comment you will ever receive.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
So much can happen in five years so it is quite fantastic to even imagine the possibilities. I hope that in five years I will have graduated from college with my master's degree and moved on into some kind of career in the Fashion industry weather it is my own company or working as a costume designer for a Hollywood studio. I know the one thing I can guarantee is my advocacy for human rights and prevention of sex/human trafficking globally will continue and will hopefully grow into a larger platform reaching for awareness than ever.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My heart will always belong to dance, after a severe injury in 2018 and surgery in 2019 my dance career ended early. I will always consider myself a dancer and will always participate in my limitations as it brings me great joy in life.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I love to cook. Growing up with Celiac disease and other food allergies I had to learn how to adapt. My parents have always told me that ever since I was a baby I had an eye for cooking; they could barely get me to watch the classic children's shows but the moment The Cooking Channel or Food Network came on I was hooked. Cooking quickly became my outlet while adjusting to life with food allergies and now it is my favorite hidden talent!

Picture
Photography by Katie Skrepnek

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I heavily rely on my faith to help me when things feel overwhelming. God has been so faithful over the years providing such perfect timing with the special opportunities and events I have been able to advocate for and take part in. I have many special people in my life supporting my unique upbringing that has provided such a flexible lifestyle being able to experience more than the average 17 years old would.

3 Things on your bucket list
Achieve the success of my own Fashion Design brand, a brand that gives back the position of every product sold to organizations I stand for.
Travel as much as I can. I never want to put a limitation on the places I will go or the things I can do so wherever I can get an opportunity to travel to my answer will be YES!
Lastly to be a mom. My dream one day is to have three children of my own and to foster to adopt two or more kiddos. My heart has always been tender for children making sure they know they are loved and welcome in this life and the joys that being a mother to me are far too imported to let fly by.

Who do you find inspiring?
My family has to be the most inspiring person I could think of. While there are so many people out there I could say have inspired me, they have not shaped me the way my family has. My mother is the strongest woman you will ever meet and she will always be by my sister and I’s side in support of our aspirations and goals, yet she never shies away to call us out if we are wrong, which has built so much character in me today. My father is my best friend and will always be. He shows me what it looks like to work hard and stay so humble with success and I will carry that with me forever. Lastly, my sister has no idea how much she has impacted my life and how much I have learned from her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think it is my individuality. I hope and pray when people look at me they see a genuine soul and a girl who is true to herself in every aspect of life. We will never learn anything new by being the same as the person next to you and I hope when people look at me they feel like they can be the truest version of themself and live a life where they aren't afraid of others' criticism.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I would just like to end by saying that nothing is too small or too big to achieve with grit, passion and lots of dedication.

Victoria will be featured in Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!

How has your strong faith impacted who you are, and how do you continue to build your faith through your daily life?

My faith has impacted every aspect of my life. Growing up in church, I have always been taught the importance of standing strong in the Lord and sharing my faith with others. I would have never been able to accomplish anything without my faith and God by my side. I am so grateful for my parents and the leaders in my church that have helped me grow as a Christian and helped me become the person I am today. I continue to build my faith by attending church every Sunday and surrounding myself with people who strengthen my love for the Lord. I strive to show others Jesus in daily life and through the activities I am involved in. I feel as if God has given me my talents so that I may use them to further His kingdom.

How have you continued to apply your faith through all that you are involved in?
I continue to apply my faith through all that I am involved in by sharing my faith with those around me and showing my love for the Lord. I believe that God has called me to spread his word by giving me the talents I possess. I strive to show and share my faith by exhibiting the qualities of a Christian. I try to always remember the Word of God and live according to His teachings. My faith is so important to me and I want to let my light shine for the Lord through all that I am involved in. One of the biggest things to me is leading by example and letting my actions speak just as loud as my words. It is so important that I show my faith through my actions and set an example for others of how to live as God sees fit.

As an inspiration to others, how have you set an example on how to live your life through your faith while also putting in full effort to all that you are involved in?
I have set an example of how to live my life by following the guidelines and rules God has outlined for every one of us. I firmly believe that God has a plan for me and that everything happens for a reason on His timing. I put all of my trust in the Lord and know that he walks by my side every day, through every situation. Whenever I am struggling or feel stressed or anxious, I pray and ask God for guidance and reassurance that He has everything under control. My faith helps me put full effort into all that I am involved in and the Lord gives me the strength to always give my all in every circumstance. Sometimes it can be tiring and tough to be involved in so many things, but I always have God on my side helping me be the best person, teammate, club member, and leader I can be.

What do you love most about cheerleading, and what has been your favorite memory being co-captain of your varsity squad?
My favorite part of cheerleading is showing my school spirit and representing my school and community. Being a cheerleader means always staying positive and cheering on my fellow classmates during athletic events. It is such a good feeling to perform in front of the whole community during a football game or stunt for the starting lineup during basketball season. I love creating memories that will last a lifetime, and many of these come from cheerleading. I will never forget my time cheering on my team on both the field and the court. I am so proud to be seen as a role model for the younger girls on my squad and the little girls that watch the games that I cheer for.

What do you enjoy most about being so actively involved in so many different leadership positions and extracurriculars?
I enjoy being a leader in my school and community because of the unique experiences and memories I get to create. Being a yearbook editor and cheerleading captain has allowed me to do things that many people have not had the chance to do. I am very grateful for these opportunities and experiences I have been granted. I love staying busy with all of my extracurriculars and being a part of my high school.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was being in the cast of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Yuletide Celebration. Yuletide Celebration is a professional, large-scale Christmas production. From first grade to freshman year, my family and I performed roughly eight to nine shows a week during the entire holiday season while also still going to school full time and participating in extracurricular activities. It was a very demanding and exhausting process, but an experience I will remember and cherish for my entire life. I was able to perform with many famous and talented people along with the incomparable Maestro Everly and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would advise someone to always do your best and be the hardest worker in the room. I would also tell them to remember who you are and stay true to your beliefs and values.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I plan to be a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Advertising. I hope to have a job in PR and a lifelong career doing what I love. For the future beyond that, I hope to be married raising my family with strong Christian values in a financially stable household.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

My favorite activity is spending time with my twin sister. We do everything together and I am almost always with her. She is my best friend and I do not know what I would do without her. We both enjoy spending time with our friends and doing the things we love with them.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is my ability to play the cello. I was in orchestra for five years, all through middle school and the beginning of high school.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized by staying on top of things and not procrastinating. I try to always get ahead, so I do not fall behind.

3 Things on your bucket list
One thing on my bucket list is to study abroad in college. I also want to work for Disney World and travel to all of the Disney locations around the world. Lastly, I would like to live on the beach and learn how to surf.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find veterans and soldiers who have fought and are currently fighting for our freedom inspiring. I believe that these men and women are the bravest people in our society and sacrifice so much so that we can live in a safe country with freedoms that many people around the world unfortunately do not have.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope that I am inspiring because of the kindness and compassion I show toward others. I always try to stay positive and upbeat and encouraging to my peers.

Justin Toney - Maryland
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Jennifer Didio Photography
Issue 29 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Justin Toney is an incredible young man whose giving heart matches his warm smile. He jumps in with both feet ready to give his very best to all he gets involved with. He’s a lover of God, all kinds of music (he serenaded my team with Maneater from the 80s during his session!) football, lacrosse and working out. He brings a smile to the face of all who are fortunate enough to do life with him! Justin would make an awesome addition to your Inspiring Teens!
Picture

We know you are a fan of all kinds of music, but, if you had to pick one genre, what would it be?
I would pick 1970s to 1980s Pop Rock. I love older music and all the talent needed to create music back then. Plus, my favorite song is Rich Girl by Hall and Oates. Also, without Pop Rock, no one would ever be able to enjoy The Guardians of the Galaxy!

Tell us about how dedicated you are when it comes to following through with events.
Once I set my mind to an event I don’t stop until it succeeds. One great example would be FCA group (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). Not satisfied with our group numbers my Junior year, I tried as hard as I could to get people to come to club this year, my senior year. I managed to get the group from 3 leaders and 33 members to 10 leaders and almost 80 members.
Picture

What are some ways you get involved in your school and/or community?
Until I suffered an injury, I was a 3-sport athlete playing football, lacrosse, and wrestling. Unable to continue wrestling, I help with managing for basketball and remain heavily involved in school spirit and class events such as Powder Puff.

I’ve also participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) all four years of high school and been the FCA leader since my sophomore year.

I’m also a member of the Mock Trial team at my school, a competition in Maryland teaching law, debate, and public speaking skills, as well as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America.
Besides school involvement, I actively participate at my church, Glyndon United Methodist in our Vespers program and youth Sunday. I also regularly attend Young Life, which consists of Christian students from several high schools.

In addition, I work a part-time job several days a week at Firehouse Subs and I intern for Maryland’s fastest growing sports company, Venom Core Athletics.

If someone had to describe you in 3 words, what do you think they would say and why?

People would almost certainly describe me as joyful. I am always having fun no matter where I am and if you’re with me, there’s almost never a dull moment. Next, they would say I’m strong-willed. Lastly, they would say I’m eccentric for reasons such as, playing the harmonica at film for football, to wearing crazy outfits at school, or juggling apples at lunch.

If you had the opportunity to travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would 100% go to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a.k.a. The Avatar Mountains. Located in China, they are the scene of one of my favorite movies, ‘Avatar’. Not only is the scenery beautiful, I would love to climb the mountains and use a glider to fly between the mountains. I think it would be one of the most amazing experiences a person could have.

What it is like going to 11 different schools?
I think that it’s really unique to be able to say I’ve gone to 11 different schools. Every area is different, so being able to adapt to different places has been a fun challenge. I believe that since I started moving at such an early age, it had gotten to be a norm. As I got older, it became more difficult, and even now I envy people who have been in one place all their lives. It’s always a struggle leaving people who I’ve gotten to know and love.

What kind of experiences do you have with the Community of Chair of FCCLA?
Being the Community Chair in FCCLA has been an awesome experience. I always try to get involved with my community, no matter where we move. Overseeing finding ways to have my peers get involved and give back to their community as well as doing it myself, has been really fulfilling.

What are the benefits of being a military child?
Being a military child has been a life changing experience. I have gotten to see more places at 18, than most people do in an entire lifetime. My Navy Dad has taught me to be punctual, diligent, and responsible. He’s learned these traits are essential from seeing it affect him and people in his workplace. I have also learned how to adapt to new places and their atmospheres, which are really going to help me in the future. Being a military child has given me the opportunity to prepare for the rest of my life.

How has being a military child impacted you and your sisters?
I believe that being a part of the military has brought my sisters and I closer. Every time we move, we only have each other for the first few weeks. We depend on each other and can go to each other for anything. My sisters and I are each other’s one constant; we know we aren’t going to be separated or have to move away from each other. We have created a bond that I genuinely think is unbreakable.

Congratulations on getting accepted into Sam Houston State University! What do you want to study and why?
I plan to major in Kinesiology and minor in Family and Consumer Sciences. I plan to pursue a career as a Physical Therapist, and getting a degree in Kinesiology is a beginning step toward this goal. I also would like to be able to help families be smarter with their money as a financial planner; a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with help me get there.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing that I have accomplished, was finding who I am. I have grown up seeing so many different personality types, all with flaws and beauties of their own. I would find myself trying to be who people wanted me to be. The girl I was becoming wasn’t someone I liked, so I decided to allow myself to like the things that weren’t considered “cool”. I allowed myself to be who I wanted to be, instead of the girl that would be accepted by my peers.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to keep their head up. A lot of people get discouraged when something difficult comes their way, but I think it’s very important for them to realize they are so much stronger than they can imagine. Life can be full of setbacks, but you have to push through them for a better outcome.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?

Five years from now, I want my life to be officially started. By then I will have finished college and have a steady job somewhere in Texas. I want to be giving back to my community through my work, as well as still being an avid volunteer.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Unlike most girls my age, I love to hunt and fish. My dad, uncles, and grandpa have been taking me since I was 8. I love the feeling of being able to help provide for my family, while also spending quality time with the people who have impacted me.

3 Things on your bucket list
Adopt a rescue animal
Wake up to see the sunrise for a week
Hunt in Alaska

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Sadie Robertson very inspiring. She has been a role model since I was 10 years old. She has always stayed true to who she is and to her roots. Sadie also is very close to God. She has always been so faithful both to God and her family. She continues to spread the word of the gospel and shares her journey with her fans.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that my ability to overcome obstacles makes me inspiring. When I’m forced to move, I hold my head up, and look for the positives that come with it. I have excelled in school despite being taught differently at each school. I believe I have a drive that keeps me pushing myself to be strong, no matter what life throws at me.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I am extremely excited to be a part of the magazine. I really went outside my comfort zone, by accepting Meagan’s offer to model for her. I’m so glad that I did though, because I never would have thought that an average girl, like me, would ever be able to get the opportunity to be in a magazine.

If you have an idea for a teen who is inspiring enough to be interviewed, please list them here and tell us why you think they would be perfect for the next issue of our magazine. (They wouldn't be contacted until your issue is closed):

Ali Tate - Kansas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination and Photography by Kiersten La Rue Kaufman
Issue 29 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I'm nominating Ali Tate because she is the perfect example of persevering through times of peril. She lost her boyfriend earlier this year. He was struggling silently. Ali handled herself with grace through a terrible time. She is a teen that others look up to. Photographing her was an honor and I'm so inspired to see what the future holds for her.

What influenced you to become involved in suicide prevention?
May 12th, 2019 my boyfriend took his own life. He was the most caring and selfless person I’ve ever met. He had a heart of gold and the most infectious personality. His death affected me in a way that is incomparable to anything that shall ever happen to me. With that being said it has given me the drive to seek out any who I can help and make sure they understand nobody fights alone.
Picture

Tell me about your involvement in suicide prevention and how it has impacted your life.
As a kid I never would have even thought about bringing so much light to such a dark thing. Being an advocate for suicide prevention has brought out so many people who had been hiding it all along. It’s showed me what the real world is like and the realization of just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Picture
Photography by Kiersten La Rue Kaufman

How have you been able to be there for others who need it the most through your support and encouragement?
Over time I have been able to share this connection and bond with so many people that I never would have thought would have happened. They have come to see how passionate I am about this prevention and put their trust in me to stand by them in their battle. I’ve been able to realize that everyone needs to just be asked, “Hey, how are you?” every once in a while. We live in a world full of secrets, so it is NEVER a wrong to simply ask someone if they are okay. You never know what it’s like behind closed doors or what could be running through someone’s head at the late hours of the night.

What do you find most enlightening about preventing suicide for those in your community?
The suicide that affected me affected many of my hometown. Seeing such sorrow brought to everyone made me feel the need to be the change. I knew there was no way I could take the pain away from everyone just like they couldn’t take the pain away from me, but inside me I just felt like something had to change. People were constantly coming to me asking how I was after everything, but I knew I was fine. I knew I was going to make it out okay, but it was them who I didn’t know. Just the simple “how are you doing” goes so far and things like that are what make the community stronger. It’s so warm and heartfelt that people who nobody ever would have thought were suffering have trust in me to not only keep their secrets but help them out of the dark.
Picture
Photography by Kiersten La Rue Kaufman

As a role model to others, how has your perseverance through tough times become a light and inspiration to many?
People grieve in all different ways and no one way is better than another. But when people come to me saying “you’re so strong” and “I could never handle this like you” they don’t understand that they are what gives me my motivation. My encounter has showed me people may look fine, but you don’t know anything that is actually happening. All the people that were there for me when I needed them were my continuous brace that kept me from falling even when I wanted to. They will never understand that while I may have inspired them for my reactions to the situation, they were the only reason I was able to react the way I did.

Blake Richardson - Indiana
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Johnna Richardson
Photography by MJ Portrait Design
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Blake Richardson has always been very motivated from the start. I remember even as a little kid; he would do things over and over until he had it right. He's a bit of a perfectionist, which has always made parenting him easy. We could never hold him to the same standards that he holds himself, which is also a challenge for him. He is always working. Since he was 4 days old, the outdoors has always been his "happy place". Especially at the lake. When MJ Portrait Design came to take his pictures, she said she could see him completely relax, like this is where he is meant to be. He rocks the water shot!

How long have you been playing football? How did you become interested?
I have been playing football since pre-school. Football has always been a big part of my family and a way that we bond, and I have loved it since I was old enough to understand it. When I got the chance to start playing, I didn’t hesitate.

What does it mean to you when someone says, “You’re a good team player”? Explain.
For me, it means I’m doing everything right. Not only am I here to compete, but I’m here to develop myself and all the others around me. When someone says I’m a good team player, I know I have accomplished those goals.

What are some leadership opportunities you have had?
I have had the opportunity to be a part of my school’s student leaders and mentors program. I was an officer of the FFA chapter for 2 years, and a captain of the football team. I am also a member of student council, National Honor Society VP, and Senior Class VP.

Finish the sentence: “Blake Richardson is great at......” Please explain why.

Being a leader. Whether it is someone my age or just below me or a kid just entering kindergarten, one of my favorite things is helping them develop their abilities and watch them grow as a person.

Tell us about your childhood, having a great mind set of never going up from such a young age.
As a child, I loved building things and taking them apart. Sometimes when I couldn’t figure it out, I would spend hours putting it back together, which sparked the desire to challenge myself and always work until I can solve the problem.

Gianna Pelella - New York
Interview by Larissa Chelius
Nomination and Photography by rGRAYphotography
And Dyanna Pelella
Issue 28 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Gianna Pelella spends much of her free time as a community volunteer, helping at her church as a worship leader, as a crew leader during Vacation Bible School, and volunteering as a helper at the annual Hope Day New York events since 2015.

At school, Gianna has been an Honor Roll student since 2015, and was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2017. She has been the President of the Warriors of Faith Club since 2017 and has been a recipient of the CPMA Music Scholarship since 2016.

Much of what Gianna does revolves around her family, faith and education.

How did you become interested in starting your own makeup business?

Since I was young, I’ve had a passion for makeup. I always wanted to be able to use my face as a canvas to express myself. After learning throughout the years, I got the hang of it and people started to notice. One of those people was my cousin who asked me to do makeup for her wedding party. Doing makeup on other people showed me a new passion. Since then, I’ve created my own makeup business called Gianna’s Beauty Zone in which I do makeup for and get to bond with so many amazing people.

What kind of community service projects have you done?
Growing up, I was taught that other people’s needs are just as important as my own and made it a goal that my life will help meet the needs of others. Therefore, community outreach plays a huge role in my life. One outreach took place in 2017. My school put together a team to organize a supply drive to help victims of Hurricane Maria. Together, we filled the auditorium with supplies to be sent and we got them sent at no cost. This event was awarded by the town! Being able to bring hope to these people was such a fulfilling feeling. Along with this I have also been a part of Operation Christmas Child, Hope Day New York, Vacation Bible School, and more.

Tell me a little bit about vacation bible school.
Vacation Bible School is a week full of happiness where you get to meet so many children who want to learn about God. Being Christian, this is something so touching. When I volunteer at “VBS”, I’m a crew leader so throughout the week, I form bonds with these children and really get to impact their lives. It’s truly an amazing experience!

What is it like help at Hope Day New York?

Helping at Hope Day New York is one of the most unreal experiences I have ever had. At Hope Day, dozens of organizations provide free services such as groceries, shoes, health care, prayer, etc. to a community. Each organization has a tent on a football field and anyone in the community can stop by and receive what they need. Being able to volunteer and give hope to these people is a priceless, untradeable experience.

What opportunities come with being president of the Warriors of Faith Club?
A lot of opportunities come with being the president of the Warriors of Faith Club. Our club does many outreaches. Recently, we worked with Operation Christmas Child and packed 25 boxes with toys to be sent to kids all around the world who haven’t received Christmas gifts. Soon, we are hoping to work with Project Reason to raise awareness for improving mental health and preventing suicide. This club has given me strong relationships that I am so grateful for. It has changed my life in a positive way.

Tell me a little bit about the inspirational video you made.
I made the video to help my classmates understand what “Asperger’s” is and how it affects me from day to day.

What inspired you to film your inspirational video?
It has been years of being misunderstood

What message did you want to spread through your video and do you think it worked?
I wanted to raise awareness that everyone is different in their own way. We all have our own set of challenges. We need to treat each other with respect and patience. It appears to have worked from the amount of feedback on social media and from my peers.

What got you into running cross country?
I played football one year and the coaches would tell me I was fast. I trained with an ex-NFL player who told me I was fast and may be good at track. I ran track my freshman year at Blueridge high school. Zachary Beach, the Cross-Country Coach, told me he wanted me on Cross Country.

Tell me about the character award you received.
It was an award for being kind, sticking up for others, and working hard.

Tell us about your upcoming experiences at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

I am super excited to be joining the Tar Heel Community this upcoming Fall! My first week there I will be joining my fellow freshmen in a program called Week of Welcome and Fall Fest! These events last for several days and have over 160+ organizations running them! There is lots of food and fun to be had, and I am ready to join in on every event! Finally, I am really excited about joining in on our campus ministries. It is super important to me to keep God on my pathway in life and these organizations allow me to keep him every step of the way!

What are some of your past volunteering opportunities?

I have been involved with several clubs that volunteer throughout the community in some really special ways! My favorite volunteer opportunity would have to be working with Hospice Care. While at Hospice I have learned very wise advice about life from the patients I have spoken to, even some that were a hundred and one! I found that I had a special bond with these patients and they always surprised me with their life stories.

Picture
Tell us about your internship opportunities and what was your favorite one? Why?

I have had three internship opportunities while in High School! My final and favorite internship opportunity happened the final semester of my senior year. This time though I chose a specific field in the operating room, Anesthesiology. I was assigned a designated anesthetist to shadow over during my time period. This one was my favorite because on almost every Wednesday we had pediatric patients! These sweet children were always the highlight of my morning, you never knew what they were going to say next.
Picture
Tell us about your Instagram Fashion Blog and things you post on it. How did this begin?

My Instagram fashion blog is called A Blonde Story! I have always loved fashion and am obsessed with finding out about the newest trends each season. My Instagram blog is meant to showcase outfits that you may see on big time fashion bloggers but for a cheaper price for college girls, who can’t be spending a ton of cash on fashion while in college. How this all got started was while at the beach with some girlfriends they encouraged me to start a fashion blog. I want to encourage other girls or guys to start up fashion blogs to express their character and style for others to admire or be inspired by!
Picture
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

To begin I would say when beginning your high school journey step back and breathe in that special moment. All the fun memories, good times, and laughs made it an unforgettable experience. My advice is to jump into any club that you feel you may be interested in and choose a top few to indulge all your creative ideas into. My final advice is to never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. There is not a test, audition, or presentation that you can’t accomplish with great success! Always remember you can do anything you put your mind to and never stop until you accomplish your dream.

Cabel Jarrett – North Carolina
Interview by Larissa Chelius
Nomination and Photography by TAP Photography
Issue 24 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Cabel Jarrett, age 16, is beyond the shadow of a doubt an awe-inspiring teenager. Being the youngest of his class, he pursues excellence inside and outside of the classroom. Although his top 5 class rank is impressive, it barely touches the reason he is inspiring. Cabel’s passion is teaching others through hands on activities. He spends his time teaching public speaking classes, swim training, and ski instruction lessons.

How did you become the great leader you are today?
I have gained my leadership qualities through my experiences. Being able to meet new people and get out of my comfort zone has created the leader I am today.

Tell us about being the FBLA western region Vice President, and what that title brings.
I was elected for the position over a year ago and it has had a huge impact in my life so far. Basically, I was elected to help lead a national organization that prepares young adults to enter business related fields in their future. My specialty was public speaking; therefore, I got the chance to travel around the country learning/teaching others how to excel at public speaking in real life scenarios.

What has instructing swim and ski lessons contributed to your life over time?
Instructing lessons for swimming and skiing has ultimately led to me becoming more personable. It has even brought me a new passion; kids! I realized that I love to teach others, so I would like to incorporate those new passions into my life.

Picture
What opportunities have you been given by being in the top 5 class rank?
I am immensely rewarded by the mental acknowledgment of my effort. I love knowing that I have taken every opportunity possible to succeed.

As a player in Cougar football as the tackle position what are your expectations of time, and how do you make excess time for your other activities?
Playing football is very demanding to the respects of your personal time. The sport requires loads of effort and commitment. However, that never means you do not have time for other activities. One simply must be interested in something in order to participate. I have missed very few opportunities because I play football.

Picture
How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I honestly have a photographic memory, so I don’t really write anything down. I am probably the worst person to ask this question to.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Focus only on the future: it never hurts to dream big.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
Graduating from college and considering applying for a doctorate program.

Picture
What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Probably the fact that I am very outgoing.

Who do you find inspiring?
Young men and women who serve in the military.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Playing the piano!

Pizza or Tacos? Soda or Water? Cats or Dogs?
Both, Sweet tea, and I am not an animal person.

3 Things on your bucket list
1- Travel the world

Layken Sanders – Tennessee
Interview by Zoe DAngelo
Nomination by Jeni Sanders
Photography by Jeni Sanders & Amber McKellar
Issue 23 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Layken Sanders is such an inspiring teen, because she has devoted the last 4 years to collecting shoes for Soles4Souls. She has currently collected 42,000 pairs of shoes and is on track to meet her goal of 50,000 pairs by the end of 2019. Layken has been on a mission trip to Haiti to deliver, size, and fit brand-new pairs of shoes on 450 children. She works hard every day for this charity, while keeping straight As in her honors classes, and being on multiple competition cheer teams, in which she has been named most reliable and best stunter, as well as numerous awards at school.
Picture
Photography by Jeni Sanders
Tell us about your involvement with Soles4Souls. How did it get started and what is it like?

When I was 10 years old, I decided to stop receiving birthday gifts and in the place of presents I asked for gently used shoes to be donated to Soles4Souls. This nonprofit charity organization based in middle TN seemed like the perfect charity for me to be involved with, because of their outreach to so many children and families all over the world. Once I dropped off the shoes I had collected for my birthday, I was given a tour of the warehouse, and given so much information about how they impact so many lives. At that point, my brother and I set a goal to collect 50,000 pairs of shoes and become Ambassadors for Soles4Souls. We are currently at over 42,000 pairs collected.

Other than shoes, would you be interested in donating different articles of clothing?

Yes, I have been interested in donating other items, as well. I have helped with a local coat drive and was able to collect 161 coats to be donated. That was a great cause that I will continue to support.

Picture
Photography by Jeni Sanders
How do you keep yourself organized with helping with Soles4Souls while keeping straight A’s in school?
I keep myself organized with my commitment to Soles4Souls, my straight As in honors classes, and my multiple All Star and School Competitive Cheer Teams by having a goal oriented attitude. I stay focused on my goals, create new ones as I go, and stay positive when times are tough. I always want to strive for the best and I'm not afraid of putting in a lot of hard work and effort to achieve my goals.

Tell us about the trip you are taking to Haiti.

I went on a mission trip to Haiti a year and a half ago. It was life changing! To be a part of an organization who helps improve the quality of life for other living beings is priceless. I got to see firsthand how children couldn't attend school if they didn't have a pair of shoes. That affected me deeply, because I couldn't even imagine not being given the opportunity to get at least a basic education. I learned so much during this experience that I will value for a lifetime. Such as, not taking anything for granted and how to be an advocate for change. I loved getting to go to several orphanages, schools, and villages to deliver 450 pairs of brand-new shoes to excited kids. It was also amazing to visit the Haitian American Caucus to meet two ladies who were apart of the microenterprise program. I can't wait to go back soon!

The Nomination: Sarah Wainwright is not your average teenager. She is the most considerate, always thinking of others first, person you will ever meet. She is a strong Christian girl who reads her bible and does devotions daily. She is always trying to figure out how to help someone else. She is passionate about what she wants and strives to give more than 100% in everything she does in school with grades and sports. She always tries to do the right thing in every situation.

In what way has your faith impacted how you live your life?
My faith has impacted my life by changing my way of thinking and helps me choose whether to do certain things or not. I am not perfect, but my faith has helped me face temptations and turn the other way.

How does your faith in Jesus strive you to be a better person?
I always give 110% at everything I do. I try to treat people the way I would want to be treated. I try to be a positive influence on social media by putting bible verses up or encouraging quotes so people can see them and have a change in their heart or just make them feel happy when they are sad and to know that they are loved.
What are some ways you strengthen your faith daily?

Every night I read a daily devotional and then I like to mark the things I find important or that stand out to me. Then I like to mark the bible verse from the devotion in my bible.

When did you start playing soccer and how did you get interested in playing it?
I started playing soccer in the 8th grade. My friend encouraged me to play so I decided to try it out. When I played my first game, I realized that I loved it and wanted to play forever.

My favorite type of dance would have to be Hip Hop or jazz. My mom first put me in dance when I was 2 years old and I stopped dancing at 14 years old to pursue soccer.  Playing college soccer and working to be an athletic trainer.

Issue 21 - Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Ty is a real example of a servant leader. As an elected member of the Amarillo High School Student Executive Council, he has over 1000 volunteer hours. The High Plains Food Bank, Snack Pack for Kids, Amarillo Symphony, and First Baptist Church Missions are some of the organizations for which he has volunteered. Ty has served as an officer in History and Latin Club as well as Jr. Class Secretary and was on the golf team. Ty enjoys US history, Texas Country music and sharing his faith. Ty is always smiling and is currently attaining his private pilot's license.

Tell us about your interest in planes and wanting to become a pilot.
"Once you have flown a plane, your eyes will always look to the skies." That's a saying that I live by daily. Ever since I was a little kid, I've always been fascinated with the idea of flight.

What is something you think not a lot of people know about planes?
1. Chemtrails are a lie.
2. Airplanes are the safest means of transportation.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
If you work hard, have a good group of friends and set your goals in life high, you will be able to reach your wildest dreams.

What about you inspires others?
I am driven to work hard at everything I do. It doesn't matter what gifts or talents you are given; those who work for it will prosper.

Who do you find inspiring?
I often look at my grandparents for guidance or even advice. I see what all they have overcome through the decades and listen to what they have to say.
Picture
What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn't in your nomination?
In my spare time, I love to sing. I sing in our high schools' varsity choir. I also love singing with friends and family and write my music when I'm at home.
Who is your favorite artist?
My favorite artist is Alan Jackson. Not only does he have some down south country, he also has some Texas country. He produces music that everyone can dance along too.

What are some of your favorite country songs?
"Summertime Blues" Alan Jackson, "Write This Down," George Strait and "Galveston" Glen Campbell.

What organizations were your favorite to volunteer at and why?
My favorite organization to serve at was Executive Council. The role of an Exec member is to serve the school's needs. Organizing for prom and food drives for the less fortunate were some of my fondest memories.

What were some of your duties as an officer in the History and Latin Club?
I organized and oversaw many of the club's activities. I often put together meetings and held weekly service opportunities such as packing lunch sacks for the less fortunate to eat on the weekends.

How did your career in golf begin? How long have you played the sport?
Golfing has been a life long past time for my family and me. Growing up with a father and grandfather who played made it easy for me to pick up the sport and try to keep up. I often find myself trying to convince my friends to play.
Picture
How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep a calendar with all the dates and times of events where I need to be.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I used to shoot shotguns competitively for our county's 4-H team.

What are three things on your bucket list?
1. I have always wanted to skydive.
2. I would love to travel to Sweden.
3. Fly a vintage f-4 Corsair

Anything else you'd like to tell us?
I'm honored to be nominated for this opportunity, and I'm looking forward to knowing who wins.

Libby Neveau – Wisconsin
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination & Photography by Gail Cameron Photography
Issue 21 Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I am nominating Libby because she has done more for others in her young life than most people do their entire lives. Libby is currently a Senior at Oshkosh North High School. She plays Varsity Tennis, Softball, is a member of National Honor Society and has received a scholarship to play softball at Winona State. She starts each school year with a list of community service projects that she has planned for the year. She organizes, schedules the volunteers and carries out each event. You won't find a nicer young lady than Libby Neveau, anywhere!

What is it like being a part of the National Honor Society? Personally, what is most interesting about it?
National Honors Society was really enjoyable to be a part of. I was the secretary on the exec board which kept very active in my school and community. My favorite part was doing the polar plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics.

What kind of community service projects have you been involved in? Which one has been your favorite to be a part of and why?
I have been in many community service projects ranging from helping The Boys and Girls Club, making root beer floats for a retirement home, and organizing events to raise money for The Children’s Tumor Foundation. My favorite has been the efforts of raising money for CTF because my cousin had NF (Neurofibromatosis), so this is near and dear to my heart.

Tell us about your cousin Owen. What kind of fundraising efforts have you done to raise awareness for NF?
Owen is 17 years old and is a high school junior. He is a very involved teenage that is sometimes held back due to seizures and his NF. This year I took on a big role in raising awareness for NF by holding an event at my softball game that raised money for a seizure dog for Owen. This dog will be a great companion for him as he moves in to more independent living a few years down the road.

When it comes to tennis, what is your favorite thing about the sport? How long have you been playing for?
My favorite thing about playing tennis is being doubles partners with my best friend Sophie! We have made big improvements throughout the past three years and have enjoyed every moment.

Tell us about your career with softball. What position do you play? How long have you been playing?
Softball is a very large portion of my life. I have been playing since I was six and will continue to play in college. I play third base and occasionally shortstop and catcher.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Stay positive and be yourself all while having clear goals and working hard. Never give up.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I hope to be in a Physician’s Assistant program learning the ropes of the medical field.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I have a very detailed calendar with a lot of lists. Another big thing is I never procrastinate, which helps me keep on top of things.

Who do you find inspiring?
My cousin Lauren because she has always been a great role model and fills the room with energy. She is the reason I started playing softball as well as why I am involved in many other activities.
