What should we definitely know about you?
I love helping others, and something that I feel strongly about is helping people grow their love for horses. I help assist with horseback riding lessons and I take kids on trail rides. It is such an amazing experience to be able to connect with them and see them overcome their fears.

How did you get involved with horses and assisting horseback riding lessons and what do you love most about it?
I started riding horses myself when I was in fourth grade, and ever since have loved it. I had heard about SMILES just from being involved locally in the equine industry and wanted to get some volunteer hours out of the way, this seemed like the perfect place to use my talents to help others. What I love most about it is definitely seeing the participants overcome their fears and hit milestones in their riding each week, seeing them excited and happy is the best feeling in the world.

What is a favorite accomplishment from your time there?
My favorite accomplishment from my time at SMILES would be seeing one participant in particular grow. Throughout her session, each week she would become more confident. At fist, she was so scared and would cry and need to hold my hand, but by the end of her session she was much more confident and excited to be around the horses and give them treats.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
An inspiring thing about me that my nomination may not have covered is my love for dancing. I am on my school's Poms team and we perform at halftime during football games. I previously did cheer but wanted to try something new, so for my junior and senior years, I decided to try out for poms. I made the team and knew that I was going to have to work extra hard because most girls on the team have been dancing their whole lives and I had never even taken a dance class before. I am now halfway done with my senior season and It has been so much fun, I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new.

Tell us about your pom team and season. What are they both like?
My poms team is full of amazing, talented girls who all really push each other to be the best we can be. This season has been so much fun so far, we have all become closer and work really hard to improve each and every practice!

What is a favorite memory with your team?
My favorite memory with my team so far would be our team sleepover. We all brought food and made posters and banners for our football team. It was really fun to get to know the newer girls and to learn more about my teammates I had already known.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I feel extremely passionate about helping people with disabilities, especially children. I believe that every person no matter the circumstances deserves a fair shot at accomplishing their dreams, and no one should feel like they can't do that because of the obstacles in their life. Volunteering at SMILES is amazing because I get to help kids accomplish their goals and break down obstacles that might seem impossible to get through.

What does being a part of SMILES mean to you and what is your biggest role there?
Being a part of SMILES for me, means having a purpose. It means being able to use my skills and talents for good to benefit other people, and give them experiences and opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise have. My biggest role there is to walk alongside the participant and help them, as well as sometimes leading the horse in the arena and maintaining a calm, steady ride for the participant.

What leadership skills have you learned there as a result?
A leadership skill I have learned there is the importance of patience and understanding that the reason I am there is to serve others. I know when I walk in the barn that nothing I have going on is important at that time, I am there to do everything I can to create an amazing experience for the kids who are here to ride.

What was your senior portrait experience like with Sarah Kay Photography and what did you love most about your day with her?

Trinity Barker

Picture

Trinity Barker – Idaho
Nomination by Katie
Photography by Carrie’s Photography
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: I have grown up a very shy kid and have slowly tried to challenge myself with out of my comfort zone things. I started with talent shows, National junior honors society, and ambassadors for my school. It became addicting to help people and see the difference I can make. I ran for ASB president and by my surprise I won! I continued to do student council throughout high school and then took it upon myself to do a leadership program called Distinguished Young Woman. It was truly amazing to see the impact that I made on girls and that it was possible for one person to inspire others.

Photography by Carrie’s Photography

What did you perform in talent shows and what was your favorite?
I performed dances choreographed by my best friend and I. My favorite dance would have to be my 2nd grade talent show. I felt unstoppable and I am so glad I had someone to share that moment with.

What was your favorite achievement from being a part of NJHS?
I got to make my middle school a better place. We worked with serving the community and doing community hours to better our town. It was a great accomplishment being a part of and having a family that experienced it with me.

What does being an ambassador in your school mean? What were your duties? How did this help you out of your shyness?
Being an ambassador means that you are a leader in your school community. You help advocate for people that can’t and you make school an enjoyable place to be. This helped me grow into an outgoing person because I realized I could make a difference with my ideas. If I spoke up, I was listened to, and it helped me grasp the bigger picture of things and that one person can make a difference.

Picture
Photography by Carrie’s Photography

What do you do as the ASB president and how has this helped you to become a better leader?
As ASB president it was my job to speak for the people of the school. I made decisions about fundraising for sports, bettering the school, and all in all making the people heard. I’ve learned that the position I was in as ASB president did not mean anything when it came to people at my school. It was what I was doing for them that made my position so honorable. It was an awarding experience that I got to be a part of.

Tell us more about Distinguished Young Woman and what you loved about being a part of it.
Distinguished Young Woman is a program where you can’t be scared to be you. You are pushed out of your comfort zone and are guided throughout the competition. It is a program where you want to present your best self and learn who you are really are. I loved being a part of the community it brought! I have family and supporters all throughout the treasure valley and met some amazing girls along the way! I’m so happy I was a part of it!

Kinsey Schuchhardt

Picture

Kinsey Schuchhardt – South Dakota
Nomination & Photography by Push Play Photography.
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kinsey Schuchhardt puts a face to the title “Inspiring Teen”.
At just 17 years old, she made the courageous decision to enlist in the Army National Guard. She spent the summer before her senior year training; unlike other kids her age who were enjoying time at the river or with friends.
After one of her first days of school her senior year, she voluntarily took a 13 mile ruck in honor of the 13 soldiers lost in Kabul. At each mile mark, she stopped, placed an American flag with a soldier’s name, and said a prayer. She also raised around $1,700 in her efforts for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Kinsey embodies patriotism, bravery, and inspiration.

What led to your decision to enlist in the Army National Guard?

I’m a very independent and strong young woman. Being told I can’t do something is almost like a challenge to me. I’ve always wanted to serve our country and my own community in some way. Being a woman you are also sometimes told “you can’t do it” or “it’s a mans field of work.” I wanted to prove wrong those who believe that women are inferior.

Tell us about your summer training?
My summer training was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life. You are put through many challenges to overcome but there are others to help you get back up when you fall down as well. Our platoon was like a family. We were there for each other and we each taught each other something along our journey through the difficult times. It’s something I’ll never forget and memories I’ll forever cherish.

What do you look forward to most about being in the Army National Guard?
I look forward to all the new opportunities it has opened for me in serving my country. I’m also excited to make new friends and travel the world. Plus, it’ll give me a chance to be a mechanic in the military world and a photographer in the civilian world. Two jobs that I love and I can do them both at the same time!

Picture
Photography by Push Play Photography

Where do you think your drive comes from and why?
I believe my drive comes from failure. I’m not afraid to fail, but once I do, I pick myself up and work harder than I did before to prove that my failure is what will equal my success in my future. I also have tons of support from those around me that keeps me going too.

Tell us more about your volunteer activities. Which do you spend your most time with and why?
My volunteer activities aren’t really limited. People just have to ask and I’m there! It’s hard for me to say no when somebody asks me to help out our community. My favorite would be singing in church or at the Angel Tree during Christmas time. As we don’t have a church choir, they ask if I can sing and sometimes I’ll bring my guitar to accompany me.

What do you most hope to instill in underclassmen as they look to you for leadership?
I hope to instill that you need to keep your chin up and smile. Even if you’re having a bad day, sure its a small set back, but don’t let it keep you there. All these bad moments in your life, failures, are trials. They are just setting you up for success in the end. They will make you stronger and make you a better person if you look at it with the right attitude.

Picture
Photography by Push Play Photography

What did you enjoy most about your senior photo shoot with Push Play Photography?
I liked that we could both combine our creative ideas together and create one grand photo together. She’s also very bubbly, so it didn’t take much for her to make me laugh in the process to create a genuine smile.

What pleasantly surprised you the most during the process of senior pictures with Chelsey?
I was pleasantly surprised with how comfortable she made me feel. I came into the photo shoot super nervous and by the middle of it she had me comfortable enough to start creating my own ideas. It was a really fun experience, and it makes me excited to go to my next shoot.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve accomplished is the ruck marches during Basic Training. The way I made it through is just taking a deep breath and letting it out. Clearing your mind from every worry about what you can’t control.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To keep pushing and never quit. Even if nobody believes in you, as long as you believe in yourself that’s all you need.

Picture
Photography by Push Play Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

I see myself graduated from college and starting my own business.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity or past time would be working out.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent would be that I can play almost any standard instrument and if I can’t, it doesn’t take me long to learn.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list would be: travel all 50 states, own my own business, and own a horse.

Who do you find inspiring?
The people I find inspiring are my Drill Sergeants from Basic Training.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe I am seen as inspiring as I keep my kindness and understanding while I work hard. I’m always there for others and willing to listen to others whether I can understand/relate to what they are going through or not.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this Inspiring Teens Magazine, so I can influence more people around the world.

Amber Lyons

10/7/2021

Picture

Amber Lyons - Georgia
Nomination by Michelle Lyons
Photography by Amy Honea Photography
Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Amber is incredibly close to her father and attended his in-office surgery to remove skin cancer 3 years ago. At that moment, she knew she was destined to become a doctor. She has stayed committed throughout high school to attaining straight A’s in a very rigorous curriculum to prepare herself for a tough college program before launching into med school. In addition to school, she is very involved in her church student ministry, plays tennis, volunteers in her community, works 2 jobs, and is a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student of the Year Campaign Co-Captain.

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about my current involvement within the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the Year Campaign. I originally started this journey for the purpose of completing my senior project, but along the way, I have become so passionate about LLS' organization and mission as a whole. I have always been intrigued with anything medical-related, and this opportunity has allowed me to bridge my passion of volunteering with medicine.

Tell us more about these campaigns and your roles within them.
The LLS Student of the Year Campaign is an annual fundraising event for cancer research and treatment. It consists of teams across the country led by high school student captains and their extended team members aiming to raise the most money during the 7-week campaign in February. As a Co-Captain of a 2021-22 team, my LLS partner and I will educate the community about blood cancers, meet with local businesses for sponsorships, recruit team members, plan fundraising events, send donation request letters and emails, and much more.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination mentions that I play tennis, but it does not elaborate on the extent of its impact on my life. This sport has taught me so many life lessons about hard work, decision making, and independence. It has also been a source of therapy for me to de-stress from outside anxieties and brought me life-long friendships. With my love of tennis, I have dedicated myself to coaching younger kids in the community through summer jobs and weekly volunteering.

Picture
Photography by Amy Honea Photography

Tell us more about your tennis career. When did you start, how often do you practice, what's your team like, etc.
My tennis career began the summer of 2016 at a local tennis camp that I was sent to by my mom to get me out of the house during the day. That summer, I fell in love with tennis and the idea of how great I could be one day. Today, after hundreds of hours spent practicing on the court, I am a starting singles player for my high school team as well as a competitive tournament player through USTA. The girls on my highschool team are by far some of the best people I know and never fail to encourage and support me on and off the court.

What is a favorite accomplishment from tennis?
My junior year high school tennis season was full of accomplishments like my personal undefeated region season and our team’s first place position in regions, but our team making it to Elite 8 in the State Championships that season was by far my favorite accomplishment. This incredible season allowed our team to further our connections and support for one another on and off the court through the long bus rides and nail-biting games. We worked hard all season long and it definitely showed in those playoffs.

What is the most important thing you teach kids when coaching tennis?
The most important thing that I could ever teach a child on the tennis court is that perfection is not the goal. Perfection is not possible especially in such an unpredictable sport. The best advice I was ever given from a coach is “Practice makes permanent not perfection.” Striving for perfection takes the enjoyment out of the sport and creates the need for comparison. Every player is different and has different strengths. These differences are the qualities that allow us to create our own style within the game, so the goal is to make good habits permanent.

Photography by Amy Honea Photography

Why did you choose Amy Honea Photography?

Ironically, Amy Honea Photography basically chose me. Last fall, I was the winner of a free mini shoot with Amy as a result of a model team competition for the graduating class before me. I eventually completed my mini session in the spring around the time she accepted model team applications for the upcoming senior class. The shoot was absolutely amazing, and those photos are still some of my favorites ever taken of me. As soon as the photo proofs came back a few days later, I fell in love with her work and immediately applied for her model team that night which happened to be the deadline.

What was your photo shoot like with Amy Honea Photography?
Every photoshoot with Amy Honea Photography as a model on her team has been absolutely amazing. Mrs. Honea designs every shoot she offers to be personal to her models and their passions as well as shoots that include groups of models to promote unity. The group airplane shoot was one of my favorites because our team was in complete control over the design of our group pose. She is so supportive of any ideas or requests, and I could not ask for a better photographer to capture such an important year of my life.

What is your involvement with church student ministry and what is a favorite memory?
Within my student ministry, I am a part of the leadership team that collaborates with our youth pastor to create new ways to further include and engage students in their walk with Christ. Beyond leadership, I am a very involved member of Wesley Students because it is my safe place. I look forward to Sunday nights at church and Wednesday nights at small groups each week. My favorite memories definitely come from the trips-- both mission trips and retreats. The current senior class that I have grown up with through the church have become my second family.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of peers, I would discuss the variety of intriguing career opportunities in the medical field. I've spent a majority of my school career learning about the different paths that can be taken within the overarching field of medicine. Through the healthcare pathway at my high school, I have discovered very interesting occupations that I had never previously known existed like Dermatopathologists and Radiology Technicians. I would love to present the overlooked or unknown jobs that are essential to helping others in my field of passion.

Macey Thompson - Tennessee
Nomination and Photography by Mary Beth Hertz Photography

Nomination: Macey is an honor student at Sullivan East High School. Macey is inspiring because she works as a peer tutor for mathematics, works at Zaxbys 15-20 hours a week, all while earning 9 college credits through the dual enrollment. Macey has participated in the school choir for 7 years, is Vice President of her school’s World Language club, sings, and plays the mandolin in her school’s five person “classic” band. Macey had to learn how to play that mandolin in three weeks! Macey is also a senior rep for Persimmon Hill in Gray Tn.
What are you most passionate about?

One topic that I am extremely passionate about is equality. I believe that no matter your gender, skin, sexuality, or religion that everyone should be given equal opportunities and equal rights. I am also an advocate for body positivity, I believe that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

Tell us about your music.
Music has been a huge impact on my middle and high school experience. I had to quickly learn how to play the mandolin even though I had never played an instrument before. Music is one of my favorite hobbies I pursue.

Why did you choose the mandolin and what type of music is your favorite to play?
I chose to play the mandolin because it is an overlooked instrument. Mandolin is such a fun and unique instrument that I was drawn to learn. My favorite type of music to play is old classics; some of my favorites includes songs by The Beatles, CCR, and The animals.

What is the World Language club and what are your duties as president? What do you love most about it?
World Language Club is an after school club that I have been going to since I was a freshman. We invite people to tell their stories about living in different countries and how life differentiates their compared to America. As Vice-President, I help organize the fundraising events we partake in. I love getting to hear all of the wonderful stories and helping people.

What does being a senior rep for Persimmon Hill in Gray Tn entail and what is a favorite memory?
Being a senior rep for Persimmon Hill is filled of so many new adventures. I have gotten to meet new people through this and go out of my comfort zone when modeling. My favorite memory is how much fun I had while taking pictures and this is just the beginning!

Tell us about your senior photo shoot with Mary Beth Hertz Photography. Why did you choose her and what did you love most about the experience?
Mary Beth is an absolutely amazing photographer, for this shoot we decided go to an arcade with quite a few people and she made me feel so empowered. I chose her because she is so energetic, always happy and such a hype girl! I loved how she got me out of my comfort zone while having a blast.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Even with working a part-time job, being a high school senior during these unfamiliar pandemic times, participating in extracurricular activities such as choir(Patriotic Singers), classic band(Patriot Pickers), being Vice President of World Language club, and maintaining a high GPA, I still spend all of my free time with the people I love. My family and friends are such a huge impact on who I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful for what they have given me.

What are some of your favorite things to do with your friends and family?
One of my favorite things to do with my family and friends is to go to the lake. My friend and I all pile up on this inner tube while my dad drives around trying to throw us off. I have so many amazing memories at the lake.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to my peers I would present something that I am passionate about. I am extremely passionate about body positivity, feminism, and equality. I wish I could show everyone that they are loved no matter the size, color or gender. I wish that I could help everyone see themselves in a beautiful way.

Picture

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

One of the hardest things that I have had to accomplish was having 3 dual-enrollment college classes, 2 regular high school classes, softball, and working all in the same semester. The way I accomplished this was keeping calm, time-management, and looking at the bigger picture.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give to someone would be, “just keep swimming”- finding Nemo, meaning no matter what never give up.

3 Things on your bucket list.
Three things on my bucket list are, sky-diving, going to Paris, and seeing the northern lights.

Who do you find inspiring?
The person who has inspired me the most is my amazing mother; my mom is so selfless, loving and caring. She works in the medical field, wakes up at 5am to CrossFit every morning, and still makes sure she is always there when I need her to be.

Avery Robison

8/27/2021

Picture

Avery Robison – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Valerie Jirik - VJ Photography
Issue 49 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Avery is a senior at Keller High School in Keller, Texas. She is a section leader in Colorguard and part of the student leadership team. Avery is also an amazing art student, having earned four first place awards in district competition. Her art focus is now on 2D and 3D animation and wants to pursue a college degree in this field. She earned her letterman jacket in both Colorguard and art. Outside of school, Avery is a Girl Scout, a local volunteer at food pantries, and assisted her mom to make and give away masks during the COVID pandemic.

Picture
What was your underwater photoshoot with Valerie Jirik at VJ Photography like? They're so cool and different. What was the hardest thing about it?
The underwater photo shoot was a lot of fun! It’s my favorite shoot that I’ve done so far, just because of how bizarre it was. By far the most difficult part was getting my hair and dress to cooperate under the water long enough to get a good picture!

Tell us about being section leader of Colorguard. What does that job entail and what do you love most about it?
My job as a section leader means that I have my own group of girls in the colorguard who are almost like my students. It is my responsibility to take care of them and make sure they are always prepared by giving them the proper information to be successful. My favorite part of the job is that my section is like my own little family, and we all take care of each other.

What is the student leadership team and what do you do there?
Student leadership team is a group of students that work together to run the band program. We function much like a student council or a staff in a sense that we take care of events, uniforms, rehearsal sectionals, and in practice procedures.

What have you learned being on that team?
I’ve learned that nothing brings a group of people closer together than having a shared goal. It doesn’t matter where everyone comes from because we all have the same goal in mind.

What good thing came out of covid for you?
For me a good thing that came out of Covid would be all the time I got to spend practicing my drawing skills. Before, I would have considered myself an average artist, but after being able to spend so much dedicated time to a skill I’m really interested in I could confidently say I am a great artist!

Please share a favorite piece of artwork.
My favorite art piece I have done is Menagerie. I took a picture of a group of pumpkins and some glass jars, then sketched them on a grid and colored them in. This is my favorite piece because it is completely done on black paper, and all the shading is done in purple, not black!

Picture

What was your favorite badge to get in girl scouts and why?
My favorite Girl Scout badge that I earned was my woodworking badge. My troop and I came together and we built and painted a little library for the CEC.

What do you do when you volunteer at the food pantries?
When I volunteer at the food pantry, I usually work with a small team, and we take a shopping cart around the pantry and load it up with the groceries that the customer needs. It’s a lot of fun because it almost feels like a shopping spree, as well as a scavenger hunt for specific items!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am openly Bisexual and my family was extremely supportive, and made me very proud of myself. My photos are more delicate and whimsical, but they do not highlight the more loud and alternative/ punk side of me. I think it is very important to be true to who you are no matter what others want you to be like!

Picture
Tell us more about:
Music: my favorite type of music is 80s and 90s rock music, as well as early 2000s alternative music. My favorite bands are Green Day, All American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, and Sub Urban!
Entertainment: I love to watch horror movies and anime in my spare time because of the adrenaline rush I get from them. My current favorite anime is Jujutsu Kaisen, and my favorite movies are The Conjuring series!
Activities: I like to draw, animate, write, and play story based games to help inspire my creative side!
Zodiac: I’m a water sign, a march Pisces to be exact.

Where are your favorite places to go?
A few years ago I took a trip with my family to Costa Rica and it was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen! I saw animals just roaming the town that I’d only ever seen in zoos or on television! One day I’d really like to go back and get to experience the beauty of the rainforest and beaches all over again!
Picture

Who and what inspires you?

It’s hard to say just one person inspires me, because everyone is so unique in the way they view the world. I like to take in multiple perspectives of those around me to craft something new. My family and friends are always so supportive of me and they really carry me through life with open arms and loving hearts, and I am so grateful for that.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would probably talk about self confidence. I used to really struggle with my confidence and I didn’t really know who I was which made me really unhappy with myself. I think it is really important to not let others dictate who you are and I could talk about it for hours.

What are your college plans? What do you plan on doing after college?
I am currently applying to multiple in-state universities for art and animation. My plan is to get a four year degree in fine arts and then immediately go into work for an animation company. I will major in animation and minor in business.
After college I want to build a career as an animator and work on either background design, character design, or the storyboarding team. Long-term my goal is to one day write, animate, and produce my own animated series and have it air on TV.

What should we definitely know about you?
The amount of fight I have in me and how I do not let things dent my determination for the future I want for myself. The amount of courage I have to be different and not try to fit in with the so-called normal.

Being a teen during a pandemic is especially courageous. How did you get through the hard days, and how did you help others get through when they were down?
My time during the pandemic was difficult but I just had to keep my mind in the future. How the hard work would pay off in the end. If my friends were feeling down we would find a way to have an online face to face talk.

What is your favorite part of college life and what surprised you most on your first day?
My favorite part of college life is just being able to be on campus and go to in person classes. I was shocked with how social and excited everyone was.

What are you studying and what activities are planning on participating in at college?
I am currently studying psychology and I am planning on joining a Christian club called Reach and to try to study abroad.

What is the biggest dream you are chasing, and what were/are your steps to achieving?
The biggest one I am chasing is to become a psychotherapist and deal with hard core mental health problems and attempt to help those people.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I will always stand up for what I believe and not be silent because someone wants me to. I respect other people's wishes and dreams. I will always encourage people to chase their dreams no matter the costs.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The topic would be mental health and how important it is to identify. I have experience in my own fight with mental health and everyone's story is different. Some cases may be worse than others but that doesn't make it easier for that specific person everyone needs help sometimes.

How do you feel the pandemic impacted this issue and what advice would you give to teens still struggling?
It has definitely made it more of a trend type situation, people are not meant to be alone for so long. Mental health has increased within teens since the pandemic. To the ones struggling I suggest getting the help and care you deserve.

What was your photoshoot like with Christine Robers and what did you love most about it?
It was a very fun and eventful experience. We went to a bunch of different locations with different backgrounds. I loved the weather that day, it couldn’t have been more perfect.

What's the most exciting thing up next for you, Destiny?
The next thing is definitely working on getting my college degree to work professionally in my field of interest.

Grace Johnson – Texas
Nomination by Candace Johnson
Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 49 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Grace is such an inspirational young lady. Her passion for taking care of others by uplifting, encouraging and enlightening them is such a big part of who she is. To her family and friends, Grace is the one you can count on to make you feel loved; to make you feel secure, confident and happy.
Watching Grace grow and mature in these past 17 years has been more than a blessing for her Father & I. We watch as she motivates her friends that have no self-confidence, encouraging them to believe in themselves, helping them to become a better version of who they see in the mirror. She will put her own needs aside to help others with theirs.
In losing several of our loved ones to cancer, she never gave up hope or her need to help push away the hurt, anger and sadness that comes along with that disease by bringing a more positive and grateful perspective to those who needed it the most. Grace’s grit, courage, motivation, dedication to her studies, her peaceful influence and kind heart are among her many attributes that continue to inspire me to be a better mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about my personal interest in the medical field and how I became interested in it. As it says in my nomination, our family has overcome many cases of cancer and it has helped me realize how I love to help other people and that I want to do this in the future.

Tell us about your portrait experiences with Angie Read Photography.
Angie Read Photography has helped me become more expressive through photography and influenced me to attempt to use my own camera. It has helped me become more open with people I barely know. During our team meetings and get togethers, we talk and have a lot of fun and I hope we will all grow closer. Angie has such a positive attitude and impact on all of us as a team which I think makes for a great leader and role model for us all to follow in her steps!

Alexis Thomason

8/17/2021

Picture

Alexis Thomason - Illinois
Nomination & Photography by Whitney Atwood Photography
Issue 48 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Alexis is such a sweet girl who is very easy going. One thing that stands out about this girl is her love for volleyball and how she gives back by coaching younger girls, even though she is not able to play her senior season due to health issues. She is an inspiration for these young girls. She is a confidant young lady who will go far in life and I can’t wait to watch her!

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be interviewed about my future plans. Also about my experience at ALA IGS, or American Legion Auxillary Illini Girls State. It inspired me to be confident in my upcoming adult life.

What are your future plans?
After graduating from Fairfield Community High School this school year, I plan on going to college to get on the path of becoming an attorney.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very interested in law, activism, and making a change also inspiring my fellow peers to do the same. I plan on going to college to study political science and get on the pre-law track. My goal is to make changes for the better and I don't plan on settling until that goal is reached.

What is a long-term change you would love to make and how do you plan to get people on board for your idea?
I would like to see within the next few years the state of Illinois, and eventually, the whole United States education system make cultural studies/women’s studies class a requirement for graduation. In order for the world to keep growing, we need to stay educated and continue to evolve with the changing times.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
As a young woman growing up in a small town, my opinions and ideas have often been ignored. Young girls are often not respected in today's society due to the internalized misogyny that has been pushed on us since we were born. From the time they are able to understand girls are taught to look pretty and be respectful. My goal is for young women to be taught that they are powerful and have the right to their own ideas; they should also be reminded their voices are always heard.

What was your senior portrait session with Whitney Atwood Photography like?
Living in Southern Illinois there aren’t many places to take pictures, but Whitney has such a great eye for photography. Our last shoot was taken in a cow pasture, but it was beautiful. She is super fun and understanding, and always makes sure you are comfortable, which is one of the reasons I love working with Whitney.

What did you love most about it and why would you recommend her to others?
Whitney is open to anything. She tries her hardest to incorporate important aspects of your life into her photography.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I plan on being in law school; working towards bettering the world for women and minorities.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
One of the most difficult things to accomplish was keeping my grades up last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. I succeeded by pushing myself to stay motivated and focused on my school work, coming out of the year with all A’s.

What should we know about you?
I love to help people! Being a CNA has taught me a lot in caring for people, as well as working for kids with special needs. I love the work I do, and I can’t wait for it to continue when I go to college!

Tell us about your path to become a CNA and what you love most about it?
I originally had to take a class, and test to become a CNA. Working in the medical field when I’m older is something I have been passionate about for a super long time. Being able to help people and have an impact on their daily life is so rewarding!

What is something surprising you learned along the way?
I knew that I was going to grow connections with my residents, but I never thought they would be as good as they were. It was heartbreaking when I had to go through deaths, but they taught me so much.

What is your ultimate goal with it if you could make anything happen?
My ultimate goal is to go into the medical field and become a radiation therapist. I want to continue to help people and make their lives better. Becoming a radiation therapist is my dream career and I hope to be able to achieve that.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
When I was younger, I use to hate getting my picture taken. Rebecca, my photographer, has brought out my confidence and made me realize how much I love it. It has built my self-esteem as well has brought me closer and built friendships with the other girls on the team.

Picture
Photography by LaTour Design - Rebecca Retzer
Tell us more about your time with Rebecca. What do you love most about being in front of her camera?
I love how personable Rebecca is! Whenever I have a shoot, I look forward to it because It’s always so fun! She knows how to make me laugh and feel so comfortable in front of the camera especially when I’m not sure how to pose!

What is a favorite memory with her?
My favorite memory is when I had my senior pics and I really got to connect with her. It was so fun being one on one. I also loved the time when our senior influencer team had a shoot and it was pouring outside. We made the best of the shoot and it ended up being super fun!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
As I already said, I’m very passionate about helping others. This is why I am going to college to work in the medical field, and why I currently work with special needs kids. You never know how you can positively impact someone’s life, so being the person to be there and help them makes me so happy.

Sarah Christensen – Pennsylvania
Nomination and Photography by Linda James Photography
Issue 48 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sarah is one of the most joyful people I have ever met. She puts a smile on everyone's face and is so welcoming to all. I first met Sarah in our church's youth group where she is a strong leader, a good friend, and committed attender. She also serves on the Connections Team, where she greets everyone with her contagious smile. She's quick to help and she's inspiring to her peers.

Photography by Linda James Photography

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would most like to be interviewed about my plans with the youth community. My goal is to serve as a director of youth ministries reaching the next generation for the Gospel of Christ. To reach this goal I'm currently working as an intern for our Church in the Student Ministry. My desire is for all youth to feel welcome, engaged, and cared for.

What are your plans with the youth community?
My plans within the youth community are to create a welcoming environment to spread God’s truth.  I really wall all students to know they belong, and they are made in the image of God with a purpose.  It is important to me that young people know that even mistakes or unfortunate circumstances can be used for good!

What does the role of Director of Youth Ministries do and what would this mean to you?
A Director of Youth Ministries is a unique job because the basis of the job is to form relationships students, spend time together, and have a positive influence on their lives.  Part of the job is to plan outreach events to encourage growth within the youth ministry.  This means so much to me because it was one of those outreach events that I attended and formed some awesome relationships with God, students, and leaders.  These relationships kept me coming back!

What do you do as an intern for your church and what do you love most about it?
Being an intern is a great experience.  My internship duties vary day to day.  One of the projects I’ve been part of is, planning the Junior High and Senior High Mission Trip.  I have been able to observe and help out in the process.  I’m impressed by how much thought and strategy goes into this outreach event.  I will also be given the opportunity to teach our 5th – 8th grade students.  It will be a great learning experience to learn what goes into creating a message and communicating God’s truth.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I'm part of the National Honors Society, Executive Board for Student Council, and am 1 of 4 people chosen out of a group of 60+ peers to serve as a Super Mentor at Upper St. Clair High School. I also work part-time and play on the Varsity Field Hockey Team for my High School.

Fun fact - I've had the pleasure of suiting up as our High School Mascot for the past 2 years.

Picture
Photography by Linda James Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I feel most passionate about the need for accountability, having a mentor, then being a mentor for someone else. Including others and letting them know how loved, important, and how unique they are. The utmost importance of engaging youth and developing relationships.

Tell us about your experience with Linda James Photography.  What do you love most about your photoshoots with her?
I loved my experience with Linda!  We had planning meetings prior to the photoshoot where we discussed what type of photos I would like, the locations available and what type of landscapes/hardscapes I desired.  Linda helped with attire for the location.  I personally felt awkward about how to pose and where to put my hands.  She coached me through the whole process.  Linda was lighthearted and fun during the portrait session even when it started to downpour.  Linda patiently waited and even took some fun photos in the rain.

Brianna Katz

Picture

Brianna Katz – Kansas
Nomination & Photography by Lauren Melissa Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Brianna is bold—both in front of and behind the camera. I met Brianna in our local coffee shop. Her willingness to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger ultimately led to our photoshoot together. And when she isn't spontaneously meeting new people, she is passionate through her servant-leadership. Brianna was the regional president of her youth group, BBYO (the largest growing, international, teen-lead, pluralistic Jewish movement in the world). With her position and her passion to serve others, she ensured that teens were part of the Jewish community and important Jewish conversations were held throughout the area.
Picture
Photography by Lauren Melissa Photography

Tell us more about this role. How did you get it, what is it, and what are your roles and responsibilities?
The role of regional president of BBYO consisted of creating, overseeing, and leading both virtual and in person programs for fellow teens. As president I also mentored and aided younger groups of aspiring leaders, and I orchestrated training conferences and conventions with the rest of my board along with other regional presidents. I was elected into the position, and I am forever honored to have been able to serve in it.

What sort of changes were you able to make in your community through it?
I was able to inspire younger members of my youth group to want to get more involved in their community. By encouraging them to be part of the larger conversations our community has regarding religion, community service, and the ever changing allyships we need to create, not only did the teens learn to stand up for themselves, but we taught the adults how to listen to and appreciate a younger voice.

What are you most proud of from being a leader in this endeavor?
I am most proud of persevering throughout the pandemic. Immediately when the pandemic started I joined multiple task forces that worked to move our programming online, support the upstanding workers in our community, and fundraise for families in need.

Picture
Photography by Lauren Melissa Photography

What are you doing now to help prepare for this career?
I am currently working full time at a law firm in order to understand the work that goes into law cases, as well as working at a coffee shop. By doing both jobs I am learning how to manage my work, mental health, and financially support myself.

What legacy or inspiration do you hope to leave behind to younger teens you are working with now in this regard?
I hope to leave a legacy of hard work and self love. I am the kind of person who tends to put themself last when it comes to helping others, regardless of who they are. I am learning how to balance my workload, the help I give to others, and the love and care I need to give myself. When I am at my best, I can in turn help others to the best of my ability. I hope younger teens can see this and learn from it as well.

Shannon Prendergast - Pennsylvania
Nomination by Colleen Prendergast
Photography by NRG Imaging
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Shannon was born to lead. When her family's haunted house nonprofit needed a volunteer director, she stepped right up and helped. Now in 2021, when Shannon found out her school wasn't having a prom, she went and booked one herself. Then hearing that many students couldn't go because of been hit financially from the pandemic, Shannon decided to raise money for the ticket cost. Out of the 107 guests, more than half are going because of donations! The This Is Our Night prom is open to seniors from last year and to any student denied a prom this year. She's just amazing and we are so proud of her.

Tell us about the prom you are hosting for your fellow students.
When my school decided not to do a prom, I decided that I didn't want to miss out on such an important high school memory. I booked a hall and started selling tickets for seniors from last year and those whose schools cancelled their proms. Then I found out that so many students couldn't afford to go. I started a fundraiser to sponsor a student's prom ticket. Now more than half of those going were donated by the community! The 'This Is Our Night Prom' is June 17 and I'm really excited. I hope everyone that goes has a magical time.

Did you ask for help? Where did you find help and what was it like taking on such a great leadership position?
I relied on my Mom A LOT and a few of my friends. I sent out press releases to local news organizations to help me get the word out. Then I reached out to local businesses to help me get things like photos and decorations paid for. We lost so much due to the pandemic. I just needed a way to make this happen for local seniors.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I've always been big into art and I love being around kids. I hope to go to college to do art therapy and teaching for children and those with disabilities.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?
Get involved with your community! Do community service! It really makes you feel better about yourself and doing something for others is really important. Not many people take the time to do things for others and it's just too important. Not only do I volunteer with my families nonprofit, but I donate my time to helping another non-profit give out gifts to the elderly.

Picture
Photography by NRG Imaging

Tell us about your family's nonprofit.

My family runs a nonprofit called Croydon Haunted Hollows. Over 50 volunteers dress up and put on a scary Halloween show every year for free for our community. We are also the first in our area to do a Sensory Friendly Haunted House for families with autistic children. I am the volunteer director for all the school age volunteers and I love it.

What other community service projects do you do?
I volunteer at a local nonprofit called The Christmas Gala and they deliver gifts and necessities to the elderly all year long. I've helped deliver gifts and even designed some Christmas Cards to be mailed to senior citizens. I also have done video editing work for another local nonprofit called the 3C of Connecting Foundation. They support local businesses and run events that help raise money for other nonprofits. They have a lot of networking events and I love going. Networking is definitely a skill that everyone should know.

3 things on your bucket list
Travel to Italy or Ireland. Graduate College. Be a motivational speaker

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom!  Her intuition and all-knowing 'mom-ness'. Her ability to rationalize and work through any situation. Her generosity and selflessness. Her empathy for others. Her silly sense of humor. I wouldn't be the person I am without her guidance. I love you Mom!

Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kenna Anderson is in the national honors society and beta club, she's a daughter, sister, aunt, student, athlete, Christian, victim of bullying, and a cancer survivor. In her own words, "I have faced much adversity in my 17 years of life, and I have learned how to overcome, conquer, and come back stronger than before. The trials I've faced have molded me into a strong, independent woman, who has a passion for others. I strive to live by the words of an Emily Dickinson poem: "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain".

Photography by My Cup Runneth Over Photography

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
My hardships that has made me into the person I am today!

What do you want us to know about your hardships and what you've learned from them?
The challenges life has thrown at me has taught me to learn from them and come back stronger than before. To rise above my insecurities and doubts and show others that hardships are only temporary but putting faith in yourself and in God will make you stronger and more prepared for the many others you will face.

As a cancer survivor, what would you want others to know about having cancer that they wouldn't if they never had it or was close to someone who did?
I would tell others to hold their loved ones a little closer, hug a lot tighter, tell them you love them every chance you can, and never ever take any time spent with them for granted because some may noy be as fortunate as I was. Surviving cancer has given me a second chance to do all of those things and has given me so many opportunities that I will forever be grateful for. Even if you have never experienced it or haven’t had someone close to you have it, life can change in the blink of an eye, so cherish each and every moment you get.

What are your roles in the NHS and Beta Club? What do you love most about being a member of these clubs?
I hope to become a class officer in each of these clubs! But the thing I love most about each of these is that I get to show other students and even younger kids that if you work hard and do your best at everything you do; you will be able to set an example for everyone, and become a role model for others.

What sport/s do you play and what is a favorite memory?
I have been a competitive cheerleader all of my life and have been on my high school varsity squad for four years, and sadly this will be my last year on my high school squad. My favorite memory would be all of the many times that I have been able to pick a girl up who is down and help her gain her confidence back and come back stronger than she was before.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I was given the opportunity to compete in singing, acting, and modeling. I have always struggled with my confidence, so this made me step out of my comfort zone, and I am so glad that I did. I was signed by Bratty Model and Talent agency based in California, and my life has definitely been a wild ride since!

Picture

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

I inspire people with my positivity. Everyone has an internal battle no one can see, with your positivity it shows them to look at the bigger picture and the positives.

Issue 46 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lauren West is an inspiring teen in Collierville, TN. She had thyroid cancer and surgery at St. Jude in 2018. Lauren didn't let cancer, medication, or life's ups and downs defeat her! She plays soccer, attends school, and loves hanging out with her friends.
Photography by Cindy B. Thymius Photography
What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be able to share my story about my thyroid cancer and all the details that go into it! Everything that I have been through has shaped me into the person that I am today.

What should we know about your thyroid cancer?
I think it is important to know that it was completely unexpected. As a teenager, it is considered rare, so I was on different medicines and different doses. It is considered the “easy cancer” but it definitely has not been easy.

Where are you at with it today?
I am doing amazing now considering how I was then. I have built up a lot of strength and am only visiting St. Jude yearly now.

Tell us about your soccer career.
I started playing soccer at about age 6 and instantly fell in love with it. I went through a major setback with my cancer but have not given up yet. I am a center midfielder and I love how competitive the game gets.

What would you say was the hardest thing about being a teen and living through a pandemic that lasted as long as Covid-19 has?
Personally, my biggest struggle with Covid-19 is keeping up with my academics. This has been a weird year for both teachers and students.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be interviewed about my hard work and dedication. I believe that God has a path for each one of us and gives us our personalities and character traits to fulfill His plan. Everyone has told me that they are so amazed by my hard work. I never leave a job that is not complete. I have always been taught that if you put your mind to it, nothing is impossible.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination covers most of the inspiring things about me but one that is not covered is my love for a school program called Panther Pals. It is a way for students to interact with the special needs children. It is honestly the best part of my day. To see their big smiles when we walk in is such a reward. They inspire me to do amazing things and to always stay positive, while I inspire them to never give up.

You have been involved in so many activities! Tell us about the one you had the greatest leadership role in and what you loved most about it.
The activity that I had the greatest leadership role was the Ambassador program at Northshore High school. This program is the ultimate representation of the school and its students. We are admired for our service to the school and our community. I enjoyed this program because it helped me learn what it takes to be a leader and realize that I love helping others.

What is Colors for Life and what is a favorite memory from it?
This is a program to help color blind individuals. It was formed in honor of my teacher, Mr. Songy, who is color blind. We put together fundraisers to buy special glasses for the individuals. My favorite memory was seeing their wonderful smile with their first look through the glasses.

You keep very busy between school, clubs, and your jobs. What about covid changed your routine and how has it been making a comeback from all the restrictions?
When covid started, it never stopped me. I continued to work throughout the quarantine. It was definitely a challenge to adapt to our “new way of life”, but I continued to push through. I was very grateful that I had the opportunity to continue to work. I was also very grateful for the quality family time spent together. Covid was just a bump in the road. You can’t let it change your life.

Why did you pick Occupational Therapy as a career and what are your goals with it?
I chose Occupational Therapy because this profession will allow me to help others in a way that you can see the progress being made. Doing something you love is very important because it definitely shows in your work. I’m excited for my future plans and to experience the rewards it will bring.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never be ashamed of who you are and always work toward what you want. Hard work and dedication will get you where you need to be. Stay true to yourself and your values even though it may be challenging at times.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I was in the talented art program for 8 years. I won first place for my artwork in 8th grade. I ended my art classes after freshman year of high school, however I continue to enjoy doing arts and crafts at home. I have also taught myself how to do calligraphy.

Elle Tidwell

Picture

Elle Tidwell - Texas
Nomination and Photography by Heather Blackmar Photography
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Elle Tidwell is a smart, witty, talented, strong, generous, artistic, independent high school junior whose inner beauty surely matches her outer beauty! Dancing has been Elle’s passion her entire life, but she made the tough personal decision this year to give up dancing with the high school team to work part time and start saving her own money. Covid has presented many challenges for high school students, but Elle’s learning to overcome these by continuing to “dance” in her own way through the storms and become the best version of herself before entering her senior year.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

Staying true to yourself and following your own heart's path even if it isn’t what people think you should do.

Give us an example of how this has been for you and why it's so important.
This is important to me because I decided to leave the high school dance team this year after two years. Everyone was shocked and didn’t think I should leave. It was a very hard decision. I’ve always loved dancing and being with my friends, but I decided to utilize my time after school by getting a part-time job so I could start saving money. Covid has been tough on my dad’s roofing business and my mom’s fitness business. I wanted to be able to have and save my own money, so I don’t always have to burden my parents by asking for it.

Picture
Photography by Heather Blackmar Photography

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I try not to be part of any one clique. There’s too much of that in high school and I feel cliques can be very exclusive and not inclusive. I can be a bit shy, so sometimes I know people may think I’m unapproachable, when the opposite is true. I’ve encountered many mean people in my life, so I appreciate people who are kind, real and understanding. I have friends from every walk of life. Social status and skin color have never mattered to me. I simply appreciate good people who are kind to me and others.

How are you teaching yourself guitar and what is your favorite type of music to play?
To destress, I watch videos and teach myself to play guitar. I like to listen to most genres of music and try to play all genres, but I’m especially drawn to classic rock on the guitar. Before Covid hit, my dad and I (and sometimes my mom and brothers) would attend live music concerts of bands, old and new, that we appreciate. It was truly something my dad and I were bonding over. Many of our planned concerts were cancelled last year, due to Covid, and I can’t wait to be able to go to concerts again in the near future.

What was your photoshoot experience like with Heather Blackmar Photography and what did you love most about it and her?
My photoshoots with Heather Blackmar are really so much fun!! As I mentioned above, I can be shy. However, Heather knows how to make me feel comfortable in my skin and make each session special. She believes in me and my talents and tells me that I inspire her. This gives me the confidence I need to help her get the photos she artistically envisions. Heather’s such a fun-loving, extremely-kind person and we always laugh so hard during shoots!! Her personality puts me at complete ease! She’s the talented one! I'm honored that she asks me to work with her!

Picture
Photography by Heather Blackmar Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Music...it’s a passion of mine! I’d talk about the bands and musicians I listen to and why.

Also, I’m certainly not an expert on this topic, but I’d love to start a conversation about street drugs that teens are easily getting their hands on. I’ve had three friends die this past year from drug related deaths that could have been avoided if they had truly known the incredible danger they were putting themselves in by using these drugs. It only takes one time. Many teens are experiencing higher levels of anxiety and depression during Covid and I fear more and more kids might choose to try drugs.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I see myself finishing up college with a degree that will lead me to a job that brings me joy. I'll have grown and matured throughout college and feel very prepared to begin and exciting life!

Lex Moffitt

3/31/2021

Picture

Lex Moffitt - Texas
Nomination by Misty Moffitt
Photography by Grapevine Memories
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: The entertainment industry is undergoing a revolution, and Lex has every intention to be a part of it. After receiving her education in screenwriting and production, she will go on to push boundaries, opening new pathways for LGBT+ representation in media. Despite time commitments as the president of her high school's GSA Committee and working part-time as a tutor, Lex has dominated the academic scene, having been recognized as one of the top ten students in her over six hundred graduating class. Fortune favors the bold. With full-throttled determination, Lex will leave a better future for oncoming generations.
Picture
Photography by Grapevine Memories

What are your plans to broaden LGBT and representation in media?
One of the most remarkable aspects of the LGBT+ community is that we are a united force across all of humanity. Race, culture, religion, and socio-economic background all have zero impact on a person's gender and sexuality. Not everyone is an LGBT+ member, but an LGBT+ member can come from anywhere. There is no other community on earth whose identity transcends all of these long-standing boundaries. Because of this unique bond, we have a chance to start breaking down some of these barriers from the inside; all we need to do is start writing and producing stories with LGBT+ characters who come from varying backgrounds.

Tell us about GSA and your roles and responsibilities in it.
As president of the Gay Stright Alliance (GSA) Committee, I am responsible for a small and particularly vulnerable percentage of my high school's student body. It is a balancing act that one has to be passionate about to manage. Throughout the year, the club must be thriving and accessible to those who need it, while also being discrete so that the club and its closeted members go un-outed and unharassed. Outside of club hours, I am responsible for evaluating my school's treatment of its LGBT+ members. Overall, the most significant aspect of my job is creating awareness and attracting members while simultaneously protecting members' privacy. In special cases, I need to evaluate certain club members' safety to see if joining GSA or coming out of the closet is a safe option for them.

What have your writing accomplishments been?
When I was in the eighth grade, we had to write a novel in eight months. I finished in six. I knew then that this was not only what I wanted but also what I needed to do for the rest of my life. That novel is now published, and now I have over fifty pieces ranging from short stories to screenplays. My most recent success was writing and producing a trailer for a feature-length film I plan to fully develop in the coming years.

Picture
Photography by Grapevine Memories

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be exactly who you are. Artists tend to see beyond the exterior level of things, feeling and articulating their ideas in an unconventional way. If you have an artist's soul, you're never going to be fully in sync with other people, and that's okay, but always be open to change. You should always be a little too curious and ambitious for your own good, but make sure you keep your wits about you. Embrace and take pride in your talents, but never settle; keep learning and testing your ceiling. If you want to impact history, then you can't let the world happen to you; you must happen to the world.

Picture
Photography by Grapevine Memories

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Since I was eight, I have participated in sports; I have a competitive streak, and athletics helped me learn how to focus that energy. Tennis and archery are my current favorite pastimes. As an introvert, athletics provided an opportunity to focus through my body as opposed to my mind. The exercise is good for me physically and mentally, and a little vitamin D doesn't hurt.

3 Things on your bucket list
Earning a pilot's license
Visiting every capital in the world
Participate in an archery competition

What are your hobbies and interests?
I have many hobbies and interests that never fail to bring me new experiences and excitement in my life. One of the things I have loved to do ever since last March, is paint. Painting has been one of the many ways I feel I can express myself freely without judgement, my escape through my hardships. Other hobbies include working out, photography, and helping animals in need!

What are your plans for the future?
I have always strived to make the most out of my future, one of the many things my parents have instilled in me since I was a kid. Although I am currently undecided in where to go to college, I do plan on going and getting a degree focused in animals and possible going into the workforce afterwards, or attending veterinary or medical school to get a doctorate.

Share with us about your love for animals?
My love for animals is something I have always had. I feel particularly connected to them in many ways other people do not. I am empathetic and always strive to care for them in the best ways possible. My dog, Daphne, has been one of the key components in helping me realize I would love to do this as a profession. She got really sick last year and almost died and I stepped up and made sure that did not happen. Today she is as healthy as she can be. I owe it to her to constantly remind me why I chose to go down this road.

What have been your biggest accomplishments? Tell us about them!
My biggest accomplishments are usually ones that have to do with helping other people. I volunteer with my church as often as I can. I also played soccer for 8 years. I have straight A’s at school and participate in various extracurricular’s. I also took four years of Spanish. I take pride in this as I love learning about other languages and other cultures. It is one of my favorite things about our world.

Tell us about your experience on the Angie Read Photography team. What do you love about being involved?
Being on the Angie Read Photography’s team has truly been a once in a lifetime experience! She has really helped build my self confidence and I have made memories that will last forever. Mrs. Angie and the Power Team have been one of the sole reasons why my senior year has been one of the best years of my life! I love all the girls and Mrs. Angie always encouraging us while we pose for the camera!

What has it been like being President of your Senior year Entrepreneurship class? What do your duties entail and what has been a favorite memory or accomplishment?
Being President of my Entrepreneurship class has been an experience that has taught me leadership and patience. It has been an honor that I was nominated for such a role. One of my favorite accomplishments in this role include me being in charge of a fundraiser for collecting food donations for those affected by the tragic hurricanes in Louisiana. With my help we raised the most donations from anyone in the school and it left me with a sense of pride that I was able to be apart of making a difference in the lives of others!

The most inspiring person I know would be my mom. She truly motivates me every day to never give up and make each day better than yesterday. I would not be where I am today without her! She is so strong and we have a really close relationship that I am so thankful for.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring because I am a very empathetic person. I truly love people. There is no other way to put it. If you are my friend, I will put you first and always be there. People are very important to me and I want to make the people around me proud.

I love building a young person’s self-esteem to give them a sense of empowerment. There is no greater feeling than knowing that I have made a positive impact in someone else’s life.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)

Now, I know you are probably asking for a specific topic. My life is blessed, and I enjoy every part of it. Picking one specific thing is hard when I am passionate about everything that you do.

First and foremost, I want to talk about my family and how I have been blessed with the best mom, dad and sister in the world. I want to talk about my amazing friend group and my time spent in high school. I want to talk about my 13 years of tumbling and my time in teaching little kids how to tumble. My awesome job at Maurices, where I try my best to create the cutest outfits to inspire the best customers. I want to talk about my history in competing in pageants, getting to compete on the Miss Indiana stage and how it has shaped me into who I am today. I want to tell you about High School Cheer where I made Varsity my freshman year, making All American cheerleader and what position I play in Volleyball. I want you to know about all the community service projects I have done like Shop with A Cop, which is my personal favorite and creating Valentine’s Day cards for people in Nursing Homes. I want to talk about how I volunteer at South Knox Elementary School every day, connecting with little kids and helping them to read and write. I want you to know that I have an internship with the Elementary School Counselor so that one day I can be like her. I want to talk about how, in addition to all of this, I am a student first: a Junior, with a 3.8 GPA, who is taking a full load of college level courses so that I am best prepared for my future.

I want you to know all of me and my story so that I can inspire other teens. My story has a purpose and it is to empower others.

Tell us about your involvement with Sharon Holy Photography? Why are senior portraits so important to you?
I am on the SHP model team with a wonderful group of girls. Due to Covid, we have only been able to do one group shoot but we are only doing (mostly) individual shoots now. I joined it knowing that I would be put out of my comfort zone, and I have been. This experience has allowed me to express myself in different ways that I would never think possible.

Picture

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my leadership and what has made me a leader.

What has made you a leader?
When I was younger, I always cared about what people thought. I would be overthinking things like what to wear to school, if my makeup looked okay, something I just said. I could never be myself. The thought of being judged radiated a horrible feeling throughout my body. The sport of softball has really helped me come out of my box and become more sociable. I have had incredible teammates and coaches that have shaped me into the leader I am today. Seeing people older than me be leaders influenced me and I knew that I would be one when I grow up. It was a goal of mine that I never thought I could accomplish because I was afraid of what others would think. But in reality, being a leader is someone who wants to move towards that better vision and now, I could care less what other people think.

What qualities do you think are essential in a leader, and what do you think is your personal best leadership quality?
Being a leader requires purpose, approachability, and passion. When you bring exhilaration and positivity to the table, it becomes contagious. Being around someone who gives constant criticism and negativity is not enjoyable. It is not someone who I would ever view as a leader. People are more likely to follow and look up to people than enjoy being around. I believe my best leadership quality is passion. Being passionate about somethings helps bring a larger vision and determination to the group you are leading.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my free time, I enjoy helping little girls how to play softball. I love seeing their big smiles when they finally understand how to do something!
I am also a 2nd-degree black belt in Taekwondo. Getting this was a very big accomplishment for me when I was younger and the process has shaped me into the person I am today.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
It would either be working out or softball. I have been playing softball since I was 8, and have been working out since I was 14. I recently got into consistently working out over a year ago and it is now a big passion of mine. Both softball and working out put me into a state of mind where I don't think about anything going on in my life. It puts me in a different place that I love.

You told us you set goals for yourself every day. What is your system for this so that others might learn from it as well.
Every week I love to evaluate what I have going on. Doing this allows me to set time aside for myself to do things such as self-care, exercising, and hang out with friends. Making more time for myself was one of my goals this year.

What is the hardest goal you set for yourself and achieved?
Taking and completing Dual Enrollment classes was one of the hardest things I have accomplished. I will be graduating high school with 6 college classes completed.
