Elle Tidwell - Texas
Nomination and Photography by Heather Blackmar Photography
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Elle Tidwell is a smart, witty, talented, strong, generous, artistic, independent high school junior whose inner beauty surely matches her outer beauty! Dancing has been Elle’s passion her entire life, but she made the tough personal decision this year to give up dancing with the high school team to work part time and start saving her own money. Covid has presented many challenges for high school students, but Elle’s learning to overcome these by continuing to “dance” in her own way through the storms and become the best version of herself before entering her senior year.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

Staying true to yourself and following your own heart's path even if it isn’t what people think you should do.

Give us an example of how this has been for you and why it's so important.
This is important to me because I decided to leave the high school dance team this year after two years. Everyone was shocked and didn’t think I should leave. It was a very hard decision. I’ve always loved dancing and being with my friends, but I decided to utilize my time after school by getting a part-time job so I could start saving money. Covid has been tough on my dad’s roofing business and my mom’s fitness business. I wanted to be able to have and save my own money, so I don’t always have to burden my parents by asking for it.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I try not to be part of any one clique. There’s too much of that in high school and I feel cliques can be very exclusive and not inclusive. I can be a bit shy, so sometimes I know people may think I’m unapproachable, when the opposite is true. I’ve encountered many mean people in my life, so I appreciate people who are kind, real and understanding. I have friends from every walk of life. Social status and skin color have never mattered to me. I simply appreciate good people who are kind to me and others.

How are you teaching yourself guitar and what is your favorite type of music to play?
To destress, I watch videos and teach myself to play guitar. I like to listen to most genres of music and try to play all genres, but I’m especially drawn to classic rock on the guitar. Before Covid hit, my dad and I (and sometimes my mom and brothers) would attend live music concerts of bands, old and new, that we appreciate. It was truly something my dad and I were bonding over. Many of our planned concerts were cancelled last year, due to Covid, and I can’t wait to be able to go to concerts again in the near future.

What was your photoshoot experience like with Heather Blackmar Photography and what did you love most about it and her?
My photoshoots with Heather Blackmar are really so much fun!! As I mentioned above, I can be shy. However, Heather knows how to make me feel comfortable in my skin and make each session special. She believes in me and my talents and tells me that I inspire her. This gives me the confidence I need to help her get the photos she artistically envisions. Heather’s such a fun-loving, extremely-kind person and we always laugh so hard during shoots!! Her personality puts me at complete ease! She’s the talented one! I'm honored that she asks me to work with her!

Picture
Photography by Heather Blackmar Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Music...it’s a passion of mine! I’d talk about the bands and musicians I listen to and why.

Also, I’m certainly not an expert on this topic, but I’d love to start a conversation about street drugs that teens are easily getting their hands on. I’ve had three friends die this past year from drug related deaths that could have been avoided if they had truly known the incredible danger they were putting themselves in by using these drugs. It only takes one time. Many teens are experiencing higher levels of anxiety and depression during Covid and I fear more and more kids might choose to try drugs.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I see myself finishing up college with a degree that will lead me to a job that brings me joy. I'll have grown and matured throughout college and feel very prepared to begin and exciting life!

Lex Moffitt - Texas
Nomination by Misty Moffitt
Photography by Grapevine Memories
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: The entertainment industry is undergoing a revolution, and Lex has every intention to be a part of it. After receiving her education in screenwriting and production, she will go on to push boundaries, opening new pathways for LGBT+ representation in media. Despite time commitments as the president of her high school's GSA Committee and working part-time as a tutor, Lex has dominated the academic scene, having been recognized as one of the top ten students in her over six hundred graduating class. Fortune favors the bold. With full-throttled determination, Lex will leave a better future for oncoming generations.

What are your plans to broaden LGBT and representation in media?
One of the most remarkable aspects of the LGBT+ community is that we are a united force across all of humanity. Race, culture, religion, and socio-economic background all have zero impact on a person's gender and sexuality. Not everyone is an LGBT+ member, but an LGBT+ member can come from anywhere. There is no other community on earth whose identity transcends all of these long-standing boundaries. Because of this unique bond, we have a chance to start breaking down some of these barriers from the inside; all we need to do is start writing and producing stories with LGBT+ characters who come from varying backgrounds.

Tell us about GSA and your roles and responsibilities in it.
As president of the Gay Stright Alliance (GSA) Committee, I am responsible for a small and particularly vulnerable percentage of my high school's student body. It is a balancing act that one has to be passionate about to manage. Throughout the year, the club must be thriving and accessible to those who need it, while also being discrete so that the club and its closeted members go un-outed and unharassed. Outside of club hours, I am responsible for evaluating my school's treatment of its LGBT+ members. Overall, the most significant aspect of my job is creating awareness and attracting members while simultaneously protecting members' privacy. In special cases, I need to evaluate certain club members' safety to see if joining GSA or coming out of the closet is a safe option for them.

What have your writing accomplishments been?
When I was in the eighth grade, we had to write a novel in eight months. I finished in six. I knew then that this was not only what I wanted but also what I needed to do for the rest of my life. That novel is now published, and now I have over fifty pieces ranging from short stories to screenplays. My most recent success was writing and producing a trailer for a feature-length film I plan to fully develop in the coming years.

Picture

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be exactly who you are. Artists tend to see beyond the exterior level of things, feeling and articulating their ideas in an unconventional way. If you have an artist's soul, you're never going to be fully in sync with other people, and that's okay, but always be open to change. You should always be a little too curious and ambitious for your own good, but make sure you keep your wits about you. Embrace and take pride in your talents, but never settle; keep learning and testing your ceiling. If you want to impact history, then you can't let the world happen to you; you must happen to the world.

Picture
Photography by Grapevine Memories

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Since I was eight, I have participated in sports; I have a competitive streak, and athletics helped me learn how to focus that energy. Tennis and archery are my current favorite pastimes. As an introvert, athletics provided an opportunity to focus through my body as opposed to my mind. The exercise is good for me physically and mentally, and a little vitamin D doesn't hurt.

3 Things on your bucket list
Earning a pilot's license
Visiting every capital in the world
Participate in an archery competition

Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Grace Walters is an Inspiring Teen. She possesses an emotional maturity that extends beyond her delicate age. This gives rise to her empathy and her desire to make an impact on the world. Her compassion is her passion! This is manifested in her love of family, of animals, her academics, and her work. What are your hobbies and interests?
I have many hobbies and interests that never fail to bring me new experiences and excitement in my life. One of the things I have loved to do ever since last March, is paint. Painting has been one of the many ways I feel I can express myself freely without judgement, my escape through my hardships. Other hobbies include working out, photography, and helping animals in need!

What are your plans for the future?
I have always strived to make the most out of my future, one of the many things my parents have instilled in me since I was a kid. Although I am currently undecided in where to go to college, I do plan on going and getting a degree focused in animals and possible going into the workforce afterwards, or attending veterinary or medical school to get a doctorate.

Share with us about your love for animals?
My love for animals is something I have always had. I feel particularly connected to them in many ways other people do not. I am empathetic and always strive to care for them in the best ways possible. My dog, Daphne, has been one of the key components in helping me realize I would love to do this as a profession. She got really sick last year and almost died and I stepped up and made sure that did not happen. Today she is as healthy as she can be. I owe it to her to constantly remind me why I chose to go down this road.

What have been your biggest accomplishments? Tell us about them!
My biggest accomplishments are usually ones that have to do with helping other people. I volunteer with my church as often as I can. I also played soccer for 8 years. It is one of my favorite things about our world.

Tell us about your experience on the Angie Read Photography team. What do you love about being involved?
Being on the Angie Read Photography’s team has truly been a once in a lifetime experience! She has really helped build my self confidence and I have made memories that will last forever. Mrs. Angie and the Power Team have been one of the sole reasons why my senior year has been one of the best years of my life! I love all the girls and Mrs. Angie always encouraging us while we pose for the camera!

What has it been like being President of your Senior year Entrepreneurship class? What do your duties entail and what has been a favorite memory or accomplishment?
Being President of my Entrepreneurship class has been an experience that has taught me leadership and patience. It has been an honor that I was nominated for such a role. One of my favorite accomplishments in this role include me being in charge of a fundraiser for collecting food donations for those affected by the tragic hurricanes in Louisiana. With my help we raised the most donations from anyone in the school and it left me with a sense of pride that I was able to be apart of making a difference in the lives of others!

Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person I know would be my mom. She truly motivates me every day to never give up and make each day better than yesterday. I would not be where I am today without her! She is so strong and we have a really close relationship that I am so thankful for.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?

What would you most like to be interviewed about?

I am passionate about building strong relationships with my peers and inspiring the next generation.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
First of all, I was so honored to be nominated! I have put some thought into why I deserve this nomination. One common theme that I discovered through my community service involvement is the purpose to inspire young people, whether in my peer group or children. I love building a young person’s self-esteem to give them a sense of empowerment. There is no greater feeling than knowing that I have made a positive impact in someone else’s life.

What sort of community service involvement do you have? What are your roles and responsibilities?
I am a part of my school’s Interact Club & National Honor Society.  We do anything from cleaning up after games to putting gift boxes together for local organizations.  I have also been in involved with Shop with a Cop, which I absolutely enjoy!!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)

Now, I know you are probably asking for a specific topic. My life is blessed, and I enjoy every part of it. Picking one specific thing is hard when I am passionate about everything that you do.

First and foremost, I want to talk about my family and how I have been blessed with the best mom, dad and sister in the world. I want to talk about my amazing friend group and my time spent in high school. I want to talk about my 13 years of tumbling and my time in teaching little kids how to tumble. My awesome job at Maurices, where I try my best to create the cutest outfits to inspire the best customers. I want to talk about my history in competing in pageants, getting to compete on the Miss Indiana stage and how it has shaped me into who I am today. I want to tell you about High School Cheer where I made Varsity my freshman year, making All American cheerleader and what position I play in Volleyball. I want you to know about all the community service projects I have done like Shop with A Cop, which is my personal favorite and creating Valentine’s Day cards for people in Nursing Homes. I want to talk about how I volunteer at South Knox Elementary School every day, connecting with little kids and helping them to read and write. I want you to know that I have an internship with the Elementary School Counselor so that one day I can be like her. I want to talk about how, in addition to all of this, I am a student first: a Junior, with a 3.8 GPA, who is taking a full load of college level courses so that I am best prepared for my future.

I want you to know all of me and my story so that I can inspire other teens. My story has a purpose and it is to empower others.

Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Madi is such a sweet, beautiful young lady, inside and out! Madi has a magnetic personality and infectious smile! Working with Madi this year has been such a pleasure. Madi always has a positive attitude and is excited to try new things. Madi is an elite softball player and very dedicated to her sport, playing both for her high school and a traveling team year round.
Tell us about your involvement with Sharon Holy Photography? Why are senior portraits so important to you?
I am on the SHP model team with a wonderful group of girls. Due to Covid, we have only been able to do one group shoot but we are only doing (mostly) individual shoots now. I joined it knowing that I would be put out of my comfort zone, and I have been. This experience has allowed me to express myself in different ways that I would never think possible.

Picture
Photography by Sharon Holy Photography
What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about my leadership and what has made me a leader.

What has made you a leader?
When I was younger, I always cared about what people thought. I would be overthinking things like what to wear to school, if my makeup looked okay, something I just said. I could never be myself. The thought of being judged radiated a horrible feeling throughout my body. The sport of softball has really helped me come out of my box and become more sociable. I have had incredible teammates and coaches that have shaped me into the leader I am today. Seeing people older than me be leaders influenced me and I knew that I would be one when I grow up. It was a goal of mine that I never thought I could accomplish because I was afraid of what others would think. But in reality, being a leader is someone who wants to move towards that better vision and now, I could care less what other people think.

What qualities do you think are essential in a leader, and what do you think is your personal best leadership quality?
Being a leader requires purpose, approachability, and passion. When you bring exhilaration and positivity to the table, it becomes contagious. Being around someone who gives constant criticism and negativity is not enjoyable. It is not someone who I would ever view as a leader. People are more likely to follow and look up to people than enjoy being around. I believe my best leadership quality is passion. Being passionate about somethings helps bring a larger vision and determination to the group you are leading.
Picture
Photography by Shawn Marlatt
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my free time, I enjoy helping little girls how to play softball. I love seeing their big smiles when they finally understand how to do something!
I am also a 2nd-degree black belt in Taekwondo. Getting this was a very big accomplishment for me when I was younger and the process has shaped me into the person I am today.

Picture
Photography by Shawn Marlatt
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
It would either be working out or softball. I have been playing softball since I was 8, and have been working out since I was 14. I recently got into consistently working out over a year ago and it is now a big passion of mine. Both softball and working out put me into a state of mind where I don't think about anything going on in my life. It puts me in a different place that I love.

You told us you set goals for yourself every day. What is your system for this so that others might learn from it as well.
Every week I love to evaluate what I have going on. Doing this allows me to set time aside for myself to do things such as self-care, exercising, and hang out with friends. Making more time for myself was one of my goals this year.

What is the hardest goal you set for yourself and achieved?
Taking and completing Dual Enrollment classes was one of the hardest things I have accomplished. I will be graduating high school with 6 college classes completed.

Samantha Green – New York
Nomination and Photography by Dan Duren Photography LLC
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Samantha Green is an amazingly talented teen, outstanding academically, athletically in beach volleyball, and a quiet leader amongst her teammates. Sam is respected and loved by her coaches and her teammates on and off the court. Love seeing her cheer for and encourage the younger athletes in her sport. Throughout the lockdowns of 2020, she continued to work hard, practice at home, and came out smiling at the first big tournament in Florida at the end of the year. Sam is an amazing Senior, well deserving of recognition.
Picture
Tell us about your beach volleyball career.
I discovered my passion for beach volleyball through my mom, who had played college volleyball and still currently plays beach volleyball. After dragging me to the beach for most of my childhood, my mom eventually convinced me to play and not long after I fell in love with the game. Beach volleyball, unlike indoor, isn’t only about which team is the most physical or the most skilled. I found my love for the doubles beach game in that it is so intellectual, relying so heavily on strategy and decision making. When playing beach volleyball, nothing is certain, whether it’s the weather conditions, the different depths of sand, or the varying matchups, each game and practice offers something new and exciting to work on.
Being a competitive beach volleyball player in New York, finding opportunities to compete year-round has been challenging. However, I refuse to allow my geographic location, and cold winter weather, to stop me from pursuing my passion for beach volleyball. I train with the most competitive team in the Northeast region, out of New Jersey, and dedicate three days a week to the two-hour long commute through New York City to practices. With this team, I can practice year-round in an indoor facility, and train with the best players in my region.
In persisting through the challenges I faced in my pursuit of my passion for year-round beach volleyball, I have battled my way to becoming a Division One Beach Volleyball recruit and look forward to playing collegiate volleyball next fall.
Beach volleyball has taught me how to be a positive and encouraging teammate, a leader, and most importantly a better person. I have learned how to be resilient, adaptable, and intellectual, all of which are crucial skills I apply to my everyday life.
Picture
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
While pursuing beach volleyball, and being a leader in that regard, I have also managed to excel academically. Finishing 3rd in my high school class of 318, I have taken high rigor AP and honors courses throughout my high school career, all while managing the grueling schedule of sports. I am also a selected leader in my high school and community and participate in many volunteer groups in which I mentor the younger students in my high school district.
Academically, I am a peer tutor for struggling students in my high school district. Through this leadership role, I can help others succeed in their courses, while instilling in them the confidence they need to better understand challenging topics. Athletically, I serve as an Athletes Helping Athletes peer mentor, in which I am a role model for younger students in the district. Through this role I teach elementary aged students the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork, and good decision-making, while offering them a positive example to look up to in their own school district.
Through these leadership roles, I hope to leave behind a legacy of resilience and positivity. Always striving to be the best version of myself, I have instilled these values in all the children and peers I have mentored and hope that they can embody these characteristics in their own lives.

Picture

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would present on the importance of the intangibles. No matter what you are doing, being good at that specific task, whether it's a sport, activity, club, or school subject, is only half of the battle. It is your attitude, determination, work ethic, and all the "intangibles" that rise you above being good to instead become great at what you do :)

I am a member of my school’s student council. In this council I help to organize events and activities that bring together our students as a community. My responsibilities include listening and communicating the wants of students. As well as learning to communicate with multiple personalities. My goal for the end of the year is to learn more how to get along with and communicate with multiple personalities and people to obtain the best end for the school as a whole.
I am also a part of my schools’ chapter of NHS. In National Honors Society, we are expected to serve our community and create service opportunities for our school. Our responsibilities are mainly to create opportunities for the students of BHHS to serve their community by donating needed items. By the end of this year, we hope to donate time of the chapter to a nursing home and do some kind of volunteer project. We are, at the moment, unsure of what that project is,

You’re in a lot of sports! Give us a favorite memory or accomplishment from one.
My favorite memory and accomplishment from cheer wrap into one! It is being the only junior on our varsity basketball cheer squad last year. I loved this opportunity and it made me grow as a person. Being the only junior was kind of lonely because I was outside of my comfort zone and away from my friends. However, I was able to make new friends with the seniors on the team. I was also able to get the experience of Varsity Basketball Games last year, which I am very thankful for because this year is so different.

How did you get into acting and what have been some of your favorite roles/plays?
My family has always been into musicals and theatre. I saw Wicked in Columbus Ohio when I was about ten and fell in love with it. I auditioned and participated in all my middle school productions and continued this into high school. Some of my favorite roles have been Belle in Beauty in The Beast and Beth in Little Women. Both are strong female figures that show their strength. The cast of Little Women, also turned into a family during the fall of 2019. My character Beth, taught me that even the smallest of people, roles, and personalities can make a big and strong impact,

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have some anxiety but I always try to wake up in the morning with a smile on my face and make the day amazing and bright for others. I always want to be a light in people’s days.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Animal Cruelty. I think animals should not be tested on for medical or cosmetic products. I do not buy any products by brands that are tested on animals.

How do you serve your community through your school?

Every spring my high school takes a week off to go out into the community to serve. In the past, we have gone to Michigan to clean up a camp for the summer, and this year my class is going to Kentucky. As the president of the National Honor Society at my school, I get to use my leadership skills to serve in more ways than just our service week. I ran a fundraiser to raise money for teen moms for Christmas.

You are a leader in several different capacities. What are some important leadership qualities that are important to you?
I feel that a good leader should be their authentic selves. Staying true to yourself means don’t try to be somebody you are not. Some people naturally have a desire to help others and improve the world around them, and it can be easy to find a way to use that desire to build up themselves and others. Cooperation is important since it may be hard to be a leader. Working with others makes it easier to serve out in the world.

What example are you hoping to leave behind for the next generation of leaders in your community?
I hope that the next generation of leaders won’t lose the passion of leadership and the responsibilities that come with it. During this age, many people prefer to sit in the background and let others do all the work while technology and social media takes up so much of their lives. Looking past that, we can see how important it is to get out into the world. Our world needs a group of leaders with a serving attitude. I hope that others will see that, then look and see how involved I am and want to do the same.

In what ways are you committed to protecting our wonderful Earth?
Our planet provides us with so much, and we may not even be aware of it. We have breathable air, clean water, and soil that grows our food. Some people don’t care about that, and sit back as litter, trash, and pollutants build up in the environment. I help work to keep that from happening by picking up trash that I may see on the side of the road, recycling when I can, and being careful as to where I put my trash.

Share with us your interest in science and space.
By far, one of my favorite subjects to talk about is anything about science and space. Have you ever thought about how we are floating through space in a vast universe on Earth? I get my inspiration from looking up at the stars in the endless sky and imagining where humans might go one day out there in space. The possibility that technology provides for us to get to other planets drives me to become an engineer, and to be a part of that process to get there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I will have completed college and will have gotten a degree in engineering. I want to work with robotics that helps improve our lives, but I’m not sure yet. It would be awesome to work with advanced prosthetic limbs or technology that will be used in space. I also see myself living somewhere that is not cold for the majority of the year. Somewhere nice like Florida would be amazing.

Picture
Photography by Sherry Misch

3 Things on your bucket list
I definitely want to travel to different places in the world. I have never left the United States before, and think it would be awesome to travel to Europe and experience authentic Italian food (my favorite!). I also want to watch a rocket launch at NASA someday. Getting to see people’s hard work succeed and how complicated a machine can be that actually gets to space is amazing. Lastly, I would like to make a difference. I want my life and work to have made a positive impact on people. I want them to look back and see that one individual actually can make a difference.

Kaitlin Robinson – Texas
Nomination and Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kaitlin Robinson is the most kind hearted person you will ever meet. She lights up any room she enters with not only her beautiful smile, but her infectious laugh and energy.
She has spent most of her life giving back to her school, community, and world. Last year, she started a club at school to make care packages to be delivered to the homeless and less fortunate. Kaitlin has played sports throughout her life and has been involved in many clubs and organizations with her school and church. But her heart is in helping those, either people or animals, that are less fortunate than she. She would rather give to someone than to have anything for herself. Her selfless acts from a very young age to now have always made her family extremely proud of her.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I am most proud of my volunteerism. I have always strived to give back to those less fortunate than myself. When I was in elementary school, I would ask my friends to donate money so I could purchase something for my teacher in lieu of birthday gifts.

Tell us about your love of volunteering. Where did it start and where are your favorite places to volunteer?
I have always loved to give back to my community and touch every heart I can reach. I want people to remember me as the girl who made them smile or feel welcomed wherever they are. When I was younger, I never asked for anything for Christmas or my birthday because I knew someone out there needed something more than I did. My first major volunteering opportunity was a toy drive for Ben Taub Children’s Hospital that my sister and I started coordinating every year on Good Friday. It was amazing to see the children’s faces light up when they received a new toy or coloring book! Moments like those are priceless and unforgettable.

What is the club you made at school for the homeless? How did you get it started and where is it now? How did Covid affect your efforts?
My junior year of high school I started a club, R.A.I.L, dedicated to helping the homeless community. R.A.I.L stands for Raising Awareness; Impacting Lives. If I could impact one person’s life for the better, my purpose would be fulfilled. I have always made care packages and dropped them off the local shelters or handed them out to men and women I see on the road. When my English teacher last year brought up the idea of starting a club, I jumped right on it! I was able to form a council and have our first few meetings before Covid-19 shut down our country. Sadly, no more was able to be done due to school closures and safety protocols. Hopefully soon I will be able to create a non-profit for R.A.I.L and continue on my journey!

Share your dance journey with us. What are your favorite types of dance to practice and what is a favorite memory or accomplishment with dance?
Last year I decided to try out for Legacies, the dance/drill team at my high school. I had never danced before this and was very nervous going into the prep week and auditions. I practiced every night until midnight that week and my mom and I prayed so hard that I would make the team. When I got my call back, I was ecstatic! I ended up making the team and the world of dance became more than I could have ever dreamed of. It has shaped me as a person and leader and helped me find my true self.
My favorite types of dance are contemporary, lyrical, and jazz. When the music moves through my body during a contemporary or lyrical piece, I feel like I have been transported to a different universe where it is only the music and I. Jazz is so energetic, and a sassy, fierce song has the most dramatic facials and sharp movements. I’ve always been a bubbly person and it is so great when I am able to just have fun and let loose with a dance.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I have had the opportunity to be inspired by some great leaders. I would love to speak to a group of young girls in leadership and empowerment. I feel that I have some lessons I’ve learned about goal setting that I would like to be able to pass on to others just starting their high school journey.

What is something you learned from a great leader that you have used through you to pass down to the next generation of great leaders?
One of the fabulous experiences I had as a part of the Legacies Dance Team was being able to attend a women’s empowerment talk. The guest speaker said two things that have always stuck with me and I pass them on to everyone, hoping they will get the same life changing affects it had on me. The first thing she said was “fake it until you become it”. I have been able to live as the best version of myself every day because I can wake up knowing that I want to help others and act on it! The second thing she taught me was to have a “power pose”. Whether it be your hands on your hips or lifting your head a little higher, have a pose that gives you the confidence to be who you want to be and not back down to anyone. I have always dealt with anxiety, so having a way to help empower myself in situations where I want to give in and hide has helped me overcome so many obstacles.

What are your greatest strengths as a leader?
As a leader, I imagine my greatest strengths to be my ability to empathize with others and stand my ground when situations get tough. I never want someone to feel unwelcome or sad around me and I will go the distance to make sure I put a smile on everyone’s face. I also do not have a problem with standing out or being negatively labeled when doing the right thing. If I’m not the coolest because I won’t do something I know is wrong that does not affect me and I hope others will be able to say no, or stand up for someone, if I have the courage to do so first. It’s hard to be the odd one out, especially as a teenager, but I make it a goal to set the trend for standing up for yourself and others.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

In 5 years I will most likely be starting my first year of medical school. After high school I will be attending college to double major in Biomedical Science and Business. Once I graduate with my Bachelors Degrees I will attend medical school and finish out my residency, and then open my own plastic surgery practice. I would love to help others who have been in accidents feel good about themselves again. In today’s society people are easily judged based solely off their looks. It is easy to forget how amazing of a person you are inside when your morale is so low due to an outside perspective. Everyone should be confident in their own, beautiful skin!

Who do you find inspiring?
The most inspiring person I have in my life is hands down my mother. As a single mom of two girls, I’m sure she has a rough time with my sister and I every once in a while. I would not have been able to accomplish anything I have without my very best friend and role model pushing me every day! My mom, Kathy Robinson, has dedicated herself to children her whole life. As a mother and elementary teacher, she impacts and shapes the lives of children everywhere. She is the most confident and true to self woman I know, and a fabulous role model for all. She has taught me everything in life, but the most important words she has instilled into me is that “you are enough”. She has led me to be the confident, well rounded young woman I am today. Without her I would not be in this magazine right now... without her I would not be anywhere. So thank you Mom, for always having my back and pushing me out of my comfort zone a little further. I love you ♥︎

Salem Parker – North Carolina
Nomination and Photography by Tayson Photography, LLC
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: A photograph catches emotion for one moment in time. For Salem, you would need many photos to show the emotions and inspiration that she shares daily. However, it is times when Salem is not in front of the lens of others that her true inward beauty shines. Salem is a natural communicator on so many levels. She is compassionate and loving with an authentic embrace. She is a mentor who lifts others up in athletics and academics. Salem can warm your soul with a musical or a dramatic performance. But most importantly, Salem will lift your name in a quiet prayer on your behalf in your time of need or just because she feels led to do so.

What do you want us to know about dyslexia?
A little bit more about me and my dyslexia is that I was diagnosed in the third grade because we could start to tell a difference from me and the other students. From that point on I knew I was different from everybody else in the classroom but that didn't stop me from working twice as hard and still getting top of my class. Most people didn't even know I had dyslexia. But I believe that my dyslexia is why I can talk in front of people and why I can persevere through any crisis. Dyslexia has quite a few downsides but when you compare them to what you get out of it I wouldn't trade having dyslexia for anything.

What do you think are your best leadership qualities?
I believe that the best qualities to have so that you can be a great leader would be to have a level head but also show everybody that you mean business. Also, I believe that you must be willing to make sacrifices of your own so that your team is better qualified for the job. To be a good leader you must also be a team player which can be very hard at times. Right now, I have been trying to improve on making sacrifices of my own so that my team can get better and grow. Also, I've been trying to get to know everybody that works with me better so that I can be a better leader for them. It can be hard being a leader because everyone won't like you and you will have to deal with all the problems that are thrown your way. But it's better to look at all the amazing things you're getting out of it than the bad.

Picture
Photography by Tayson Photography, LLC

Why do you love being in leadership roles?
The whole reason why I take every opportunity to be in a leadership role is the feeling that you get when you meet all the new people and other leaders that are in your group. But what I believe is the best feeling is whenever you can get up in front of everybody and speak. Speaking can be the scariest part of being a leader. But getting up in front of a crowd and speaking or when you're in the huddle rallying your whole team up for the big game is the best feeling ever. I'm most passionate about speaking about things that are extremely important to me so that I can spread my message to as many people as I can.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them that they should trust their guts and to take the leap of faith out into the world. Also, I will tell them that they must believe in themselves if they want to get anywhere because that is a key trait into success.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself either in college getting a degree or in the field of Christian ministry.

3 Things on your bucket list
Going to Germany, skydiving, and going to Grease

Who do you find inspiring?
My biggest inspiration is my parents because they have helped me through everything but also my coaches from basketball inspire me. My coach Mike Russell and jazz (Jazmine Charles) are two of my biggest inspirations in life. They inspire me every day to be a better person and to always try and never give up. They push me to be the best that I can be.

What is one of your favorite memories from soccer?
I have several good memories, and I am always in good spirits after winning a game, but if I were to pick one memory it would be winning the 6A state championship in 2019. My high school soccer team was going through playoffs in the spring of my sophomore year. We had reached the state championship. The stakes were high, so we were all really nervous for the game. I will never forget my excitement after winning. My entire team celebrated and we were smiling the entire way home.

What does leadership mean to you, and what do you think makes a good leader?

To me, leadership means using your abilities and status to help others around you become the type of person they want to be. Too many "leaders" use their role in a negative way when leadership should involve helping others grow mentally by working together to achieve common goals. A good leader has flexibility with their outputs and is willing to work well with others. Leaders must also be selfless and put themselves in a position to mentor and help those around them. In my opinion, a leader is often defined by those around them.

What are your roles in Assisteens of Norman and what do you love most about it? What should people know if they want to get involved?
Assisteens is the teenage auxiliary of the Assistance League non-profit organization. I have been a part of the Norman Assisteens since August 2015, and I have been on the board since August 2018. I have served as the fall and spring fundraiser chairs, and I am currently the Operation School Bell chair. The thing I love most about Assisteens is the environment created at every Assisteens event. Everyone is involved and really cares about what is going on and helping ease burdens in our community. To get involved you can search up your local Assisteens chapter online. Hopefully there is a local Assisteens chapter near you and you can sign up for the next school year!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don't assume anything is guaranteed. I have worked really hard to get in the position I am today, and one of my biggest regrets is assuming that I was guaranteed something. Nothing in life is absolutely guaranteed and we must not forget that. We need to remember to constantly work hard and give our best efforts if we want to be successful. We can think we are guaranteed to win a certain award or get a certain job and this mentality can cause us to produce less effort. A sense of entitlement is dangerous, so always give your best.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?

How important life choices are and how they could impact your life later. Learning from other people’s bad decisions showed me how to make better decisions throughout my life.

What are your biggest struggles and how do you combat them?
My biggest struggle is dealing with stress. If I ever feel overwhelmed, I make lists and organize my thoughts, then I try to relax and tackle my list one by one. This way I can visualize everything I'm accomplishing all while knocking things off of my list.

How did the pandemic impact you during your senior year of high school?
The pandemic impacted me in so many ways. This year has brought on so many obstacles for me to face. With the schools shutting down because of Covid-19, I had to stay on top of my schoolwork, care for my 4-month-old sister, and help my 6 year old sister with her schoolwork as well. Although it can get stressful sometimes, I know I can push through it. After my senior year I know that I will be a stronger person.

What volunteer work do you do and why is it so important to you?
I participate in volunteer activities within my school. I think it is very important to be involved within the school because it's my way of giving back to my community!

Nomination by Leslie Pierce
Interview by Inspiring Teens Team

Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The nomination: Juliana is the most well rounded child I know. She balances SCA, being class president, cheerleading, field hockey, leadership positions in honor societies and so many clubs, all while maintaining a 4.1 GPA, volunteering all over the hampton roads at Filipino events, Navy sponsored Character Breakfasts, elementary school events, bible school, and so much more. She created Juliebug’s Bear Hugs at age 10 and has had multiple fundraisers for Asthma Awareness. Juliana inspires me so much because she always finds a way to juggle it all with a positive attitude.

You really do a LOT! Tell us more about your leadership positions in your clubs.

Kellam High School is full of so many clubs and activities for students to take advantage of. For me, I wanted to try everything out and see where my passions lay. I am a cheerleader at my school and was the captain of the JV cheerleading team my Sophomore year.

I have been my class President since my Freshman year. I love planning different events for my class, organizing fundraisers, and planning memorable events such as graduation and prom.
In SCA I am an executive board member, and currently running for Vice President. SCA creates events for the school, such as announcements, homecoming, casholas, spirit weeks, and decorates the halls for holidays and awareness months.

In NHS I was the Junior Advisor, and currently in the running for Vice President. I helped organize and sign people in for NHS sponsored events, I helped find volunteer opportunities, and I helped come up with meeting agendas. I was a member of the Cultural Club at my school and helped plan the Cultural Festival, where I was able to Hawaiian dance and share my love of dance with everyone.
I recently joined the Varsity field Hockey team last year and will be captain this year if we have a season. I am a Drama Thespian and have participated in numerous shows and musicals, and have even helped at the Summer Drama Camp and participated in Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat, which is where you collect cans instead of candy during Halloween.

I am also a mentor for the Freshman through this program called advisory at my school. I want to be remembered as a student who promoted diversity and unity and inspire others to try new things and change the status quote.

Why is leadership so important to you? How would you describe your leadership style?

Throughout the years I have been involved with so many leadership workshops. I attended workshops at local high schools when I was in middle school, had the opportunity to go to VBLW, which is a weeklong leadership camp sponsored by the city for all VBCPS high schools, was a leader for the citywide Elementary School Leadership Workshop, and was a delegate and staff member for my high school’s leadership workshop.

Leadership has and always will be a passion of mine. Leadership, to me, is being a strong advocate and role model for your community and peers. Leadership is about guiding others to an overall goal. Leadership is an act of service. You serve your community and organizations. I believe that strong leadership is all about attitude. Keeping a positive attitude, even in difficult times creates a space that is inclusive and welcoming for all to be a part of.

As a leader you are looked up to, so it is very important that you are always giving the best version of yourself. As a leader it is important to establish trust, diligence, and grit amongst your peers because these three factors create a strong atmosphere ready to take on anything! I believe that my leadership style can be described as affiliative. I care so much about people and their emotions. I think it’s the best to understand people and get to know their story. You can create a friendship and an understanding for their strengths and weaknesses, and what amazing contributions they can bring to the group.

Tell us more about your platform for asthma awareness.
When I was 10 years old I competed for the title of Miss Virginia Beach’s Outstanding Preteen 2013. For the Miss America organization, contestants must create a platform for something they are passionate about and raise awareness. I wanted to create a platform to fundraise for something and inform people about a topic that isn’t often talked about. I created “Asthma Awareness- control the disease”, and “Juliebug’s Bear Hugs”, which were both ways I was able to fundraise and spread awareness.

I read to many elementary schools throughout the years discussing the topics of air quality and the effects of pollution on lung development and breathing ability. I read a children’s book from the EPA called “Why is Coco Orange?”. It was so amazing to see how excited these elementary schoolers were to find out the air quality each day to make sure it’s okay to play outside, especially for their fellow classmates who have asthma.

“Juliebug’s Bear Hugs” was a fundraiser I had to raise money to purchase asthma and allergy friendly teddy bears for children hospitalized with chronic lung problems and hospitalized because of asthma. This meant a lot to me because as a child I would constantly be in and out of the hospital for issues regarding my breathing. Playing sports still affects my asthma today, but I want to inspire others to not let health problems control their life. With asthma, it is important to know your body, know how to control it, and know ways to prevent an asthma attack. I hope that I can continue this platform and give more awareness to my community, and make it known. I want to fundraise more towards helping those who have trouble affording the medications needed to control their asthma.

Tell us about the Rainbow Camper award, and how you got it.

The Navy Seal foundation sponsors children whose parents are a part of the Special Warfare to go to camp every year. I went to this camp from age eight until I was twelve years old. It was the highlight of my summer and it was so exciting making new friends and creating bonds. At camp there are numerous activities to do there. There are land activities like zip lining, riflery, archery, climbing tower, field, martial arts, skateboarding, and so much more. In water there is sailing, banana boating, and kayaking. Each activity has levels going from Blue to green based on expertise. I didn’t know that a Rainbow camper even existed until my second to last year of camp.

I had levels from over the years, and when I saw my score sheet, I was determined to earn Rainbow Camper before my last year. I worked hard and got out of my comfort zone with many activities, such as riflery and skateboarding. Every day, with the support of my cabin mates, went to activities to earn levels. My last task was to go down a half pipe and stay on the board to earn Green and finally get the title of Rainbow Camper. I worked hard and kept falling and eventually had to stop because I hurt my leg so bad. I was so upset and hurt. I was determined to change my attitude and come back again next year determined to go down the half pipe.

The following year, the second day of camp, with the help of one of my past counselors falling and showing me to face my fears again, I finally did it! To me this moment meant everything to me. It inspired me to work hard and take risks out of my comfort zone once in a while. Most importantly it taught me to be that role model that my counselor was to me, and to help inspire others to go after and accomplish their dreams.

Pick a place you volunteer at, and tell us a favorite memory of your time there.
My favorite volunteer experience would have to be volunteering at the Elementary Schools for their Fall and Winter Festivals. I absolutely loved these events growing up and know how important it is for each child made the experience even more memorable and exciting. I was able to face paint, do crafts, and get plates and supplies ready to decorate cookies. Face painting was so fun and being involved in the fine arts, I was certainly able to keep up with all their wants of fairy princesses, superheros, and emojis. This was such an amazing experience and really created that holiday spirit I love and enjoy so much!

What choices have you made and what things have you experienced in life that have helped you grow as a person and in faith?  Some experiences in my life that have helped me grow as a person and in my faith was when both of my grandparents on my mother's side of the family passed away from cancer. These two events were extremely hard for me and the only thing that gave me true peace over those two situations and helped me to get through it was God. Those events helped strengthen my faith and trust in the Lord, because it showed me to trust him even when you do not understand what he is doing at the moment but know that he does everything for a reason as well as has a plan and a purpose for each of our lives and the things that happen. Without the Lord I would not be anywhere near the person I am today, by no means am I perfect because none of us are the only one that is perfect is God, but if I did not have him i would not have the strength to face even half of the bad trials life throws at me but because I know the Lord as my savior I am able to overcome the trials with his help.

How had your grandma influenced you and impacted your life?
My grandma impacted my life by the way she fought her battle of ovarian cancer. She was incredibly strong and never gave up. I watched how the cancer affected her physical health and how it made her very weak, but it never broke her spirit and she never questioned the Lord during it. She had courage, even in the hardest time of her life, she gave it her all and fought as hard as she could.

Tell me more about how you have worked with your local dog rescue to take in injured and neglected dogs. What is the process like for you?
When I was in elementary school my mother and another lady started a rescue group in my area called Columbia County Animal Rescue. We would weekly go to our local animal controls and take the dogs into our rescue where they would then be fostered. Our two local animal controls were high kill so when they would get overcrowded the dogs would be euthanized to make space. All dogs that would come into our rescue would be taken to the vet for medical needs and to make sure they are healthy. Then we would give it to one of the people in our rescue group to foster the dog and take care of it until it gets adopted to a new home. After we would put the dog up for adoption on our Facebook and Instagram page and wait for someone to ask about it. On many occasions my parents and I would be fostering multiple dogs at once and keeping them all in our home along with our own dogs as well. When a person is interested in one of our dogs, we always do background checks and make sure that the person has a home that would be a good environment for the dog. If the person checks out, then we would let the person take the dog and see how it goes for a couple of days and if it goes well they can adopt it. Fostering dogs has been such an amazing experience being able to take care of and help these dogs that deserve the best and happiest life.

What do you love about working with kids and what do you do when you work with them?
What I love about working with kids is how they will look up to you and you can be a good role model for them and set a good example and how much joy and laughter they bring. I mainly work with kids through my church, I am a leader at Vacation Bible School and help in Kids Worship, which is where all the kids from Pre-k to 4th grade go during church. At Vacation Bible School I am assigned a class and I am with them for the week sharing the word of God. In Kids Worship I am in small groups with different grade levels and we play games with them, learn scripture, and learn more about the bible.

Tell me more about winning the Youth National Arabian Horse Championship, what that meant to you, and what the competition process was like!
Winning my Youth National Arabian Horse Championship was very special to me and rewarding because it showed me that if you set your mind to something and really work hard and train for it you can accomplish anything. I trained with my coach all year almost every day getting ready for that competition and when I won one of the National Titles I was proud that I had a goal, set out to achieve it, and I attained that goal. The competition lasted a week and you would have classes throughout the week. The first classes would be qualification classes which normally have over 100 riders in them and if you made the cut you would be able to move on to the next round which was the final round for the National Title. In that final round the number of people in the class was cut down to around 20 or 30 and of those 30 you would have 8 that would get a Top Ten and then another person would get a Reserve Champion and one would become Champion, winning the national title.

Sierra Zaccagnino - Pennsylvania
Interview by Diamond Orin
Nomination by Caryn Gratz
Photography by Inspiring Teens Magazine
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sierra Zaccagnino, Editor of Inspiring Teens Magazine, is a creative and natural leader with unwavering determination. In school she is her class’ public relations officer, the VP of the National English Honor Society, an FBLA competitor and voting delegate, and a team leader of the freshman mentor program. She does this all while maintaining a high academic standard of being in the top 10% of her 400+ student class. Sierra spends much of her free time drawing and painting, playing piano, writing stories, and turning sketches into fashion designs. After college, she aims to pursue a career in advertising and marketing.

How did you get involved with Inspiring Teens Magazine and what does your role as editor entail? What do you like most about being involved with so many teens from all over the world through it?
I initially wrote articles and participated in photoshoots for the magazine starting my freshman year of high school. Over the years I have had a couple of ideas on how to improve the magazine and keep things fresh, so I was very happy to accept the editor position at the start of my junior year. My primary responsibility is to review all interview submissions from nominated teens and edit their writing, without altering their stories. One of my favorite parts of my position is leading our online international meetings where members come together to develop leadership conferences and global service projects. I love getting to know and speak with the inspiring teens who I read so much about!

What do you like so much about being a leader?
Being a leader is important to me because I have the opportunity to foster a collaborative community and I get to uplift others. People look up to you as a leader, and I enjoy carrying that responsibility.

What are your duties as a class’ public relations officer?
As the public relations officer, I control the class profile on social media platforms and use these platforms, as well as regular print media, to share and receive information with the student population. I also work with the other student officers to plan and run popular events such as the Homecoming Dance, Junior Prom, Fall Festival, and Senior Prom.

How do you balance extra circulars and your leadership positions while maintaining top 10% in your class?
Most of my extracurriculars and leadership positions revolve around subjects that I already work on in school, so I like to view these activities as extensions of my learning outside the classroom. Additionally, I find it best to take challenging classes that you’re truly interested in because then you will have more motivation to learn and excel. For example, I choose to take more English and history courses because I know that I’m willing to put in the effort for subjects I love.

What kind of fashion do you like to design, why?
I like to blend contemporary and artistic fashion because there is something incredibly satisfying about wearing clothes that I’ve designed myself, but it is also rewarding to see more experimental ideas come to life. I was fortunate enough to spend some of last summer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago learning all about fashion design through the lens of fabric manipulation and dimensional art.

What is your favorite kind of story, why?
While I do have a soft spot for certain historical tales, my favorite type of stories are primarily realistic or dystopian fiction. In general, I enjoy a book with good character development, appropriate pacing, unique point (or points) of view, and a distinctive voice. Some memorable books that I’ve read recently are Disappearing Earth and Normal People.

How does everything you do keep you so focused on your final goal?
Storytelling is a big part of my identity given that I often incorporate it in all my creative and even academic ventures. I know that I can use a strength like this in the future within an advertising or marketing career because I will need to analyze situations from multiple viewpoints. Knowing this furthermore encourages me to continue expressing myself and seek new experiences from which to learn.

What inspired you to get so involved in your church and have such strong faith?
I've been in church all my life but the reason why I'm so involved in church and have faith is because I love God.

Now I know that you are a drummer in your worship team, how long ago did you start drumming, and what does being in the worship team involve?
I started drumming when I was 14. Being a part of the worship team involves staying at a constant level of being humble. Give glory to God before we try and take the glory for ourselves.

Picture
Photography by Light of the World Photography

When you work with the church mission team and at MISSION:IMPACT what do you do there?
During our mission camps I am part of our camp worship team and I'm a team leader. "Tropical Ninjas!" Also, my teams really did more of the grunt work because it was an all-male team.

What influenced you to complete the CNA program and start working at your local hospital?
My teacher Mrs. Sam is the biggest part of this. She worked on this apprenticeship three years and I was very blessed to be the first to do it. She pushed me all the way to the finish line.

What does work at the hospital involve? What jobs do you do there when you volunteer?

The hospital involves a list that I don't know if I can type it all out. As a CNA I help the nurses do anything they need me to do, I chart how much people eat, drink, and use the restroom. I also lift, move, and clean patients as need be to help prevent pressure ulcers.

What is your favorite part about volunteering?
My favorite part about volunteering is seeing the smiles on the faces of those you are helping. When you see the pure joy on their faces, you know that you are impacting their lives for the better and making a lasting difference in your community. No matter how large or small of a difference you make, every change matters in someone’s life.

What is your favorite volunteer project you have done?
My favorite volunteer project that I’ve done was a fundraiser I started for families affected by autism. The proceeds went to a resource center for autism and all together we raised $4,986 to support our local families. I got the idea for this project by spending time with one of my teacher’s sons who are both autistic. Seeing them both at their best and worst made me passionate to bring awareness and help bring more resources to our small community.

What types of sports do you play and how did you get interested in them?

I play volleyball, basketball, and track and field. I became interested in them for many reasons. I grew up with two siblings and many neighbors kids, while living next to a park, I was always outside running around. I also live in a town that is known for their sports. We have amazing coaching staffs that have built programs that draw crowds in to support us. Through sports I have gained so much beyond a healthy lifestyle. I have gained leadership qualities that even allowed me to be voted team captain of my basketball team. On top of that I have gained more family members that will be a part of my life for many years to come.

Tell me more about the 2020 senior rep program, what does that involve?

The senior rep program was through Candid Touch Photography and Design, whom I’ve grown to love like my own family. Mandi, the photographer, selected me and 4 other girls to help promote her business through taking once in a lifetime photos and posting them to our social media. Unique shoots such as milk baths, rock bands, and a real life princess, both helped get Candid Touch’s name out there and gave us both memories and photos we will never forget. On top of the photo shoots we were able to have our senior pictures taken. Personally, this program has given me so much confidence and has shown me who I can truly be. I cannot thank Mandi enough for being such an amazing person and for starting this program for teens in my area.

What is the best thing about always getting to inspire and help people?

The best thing about my opportunities to inspire and help others is the feeling I get that I’ve made a difference in somebody else’s life. Knowing that I’ve helped make someone's life easier brings a sense of pride to myself and my life.

What kind of leadership opportunities have you had?
I have been on the student council since middle school. I enjoy representing my class and being involved in school events. I am also an executive officer of Key Club. As treasurer, I handle the financial aspect of this community service organization. Key Club(student branch of Kiwanis) is a student-led organization whose goal is to encourage leadership through serving others. This organization has given me opportunities to volunteer with children's sports as well as many other community events. I am also the treasurer of SkillsUSA. SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving high school, college and middle school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. As a Junior, I was chosen to represent my class as a College Ambassador. This position allowed me the opportunity to help guide underclassmen through their educational path. Why do you want to be an occupational therapist?

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I think the hardest thing I have ever accomplished is some of the nursing skills I did to earn my Certified Nursing Assistant certification. I knew these skills would give me a foundation to better myself as an OT student.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be involved, make memories, get along with others and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I hope to be working toward my master's or doctorate in OT while working and gaining hands-on job experience.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present on learning a trade. Although I am college-bound, I feel that learning a skill or trade is a great way to be educated. I think so many feel that college-bound students cannot go to a trade school or that trade school education is not sufficient. There is a great need for trade school careers and education. I am so glad I chose to start my career path in a vocational school and look forward to using my skills to work in college.

3 Things on your bucket list:
Travel! I want to visit all 50 states as well as other countries. I also want to climb a mountain and volunteer to help with injured marine life.

Who do you find inspiring?
My 5-year-old cousin. He was born with one hand. His other partial hand has only two digits. He amazes me every day and he never lets challenges hold him back. He is all boy and brings a smile to my face every time I am with him. He has inspired me to become an occupational therapist.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I inspire others by overcoming adversity. There have been times, I have lost an election or been the underdog in the competition, but I have prevailed under pressure.

Who inspired you to get so involved in your school and community? Why?
Myself! I knew from when I was in Elementary school that I wanted to be the President of school clubs to hopefully make an impact and a change in my school and community.

What is the biggest way you inspire others to get involved in their school and community?
I try to inspire others by setting good examples daily and I always try to do what is right, no matter what issue arises. I am President of all the clubs at my school and I really try to be positive and encourage other kids to get involved in our activities.

What inspired you to push through and overcome your knee injury?
It is my Senior year and I knew I had no choice but to overcome it and push forward to get over it. Time was not going to stand still and wait for me to get better. I was eager to resume my school obligations like cheerleading and the Pom/Dance team. I reminded myself every day that my injury was only temporary and that I need to be grateful that surgery was a success and that I was on the mend because others everywhere are dealing with greater struggles.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

What is it like being involved in so many activities such as cheer, FBLA, and many more?

It is very fun, busy and also at times, stressful! I wouldn't trade it for anything else though because of how many amazing opportunities and people I have gotten to know and meet and become close to. My schedule is always packed with either practice, fundraising, competitions, games, etc. It has helped me to realize to make each moment count. Time passes whether you're sitting still or going non-stop. Why not make the most of it?!!

Because you have so much going on in your life, what helps you stay balanced?
My family, especially my mom. We are very organized people and she helps keep me on task and always makes sure I'm ready for each day by going over our agendas for the day and double checking that I have everything I need, whether it be uniforms, practice clothes, fundraising forms, money for activities, etc.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Public Speaking is by far the hardest thing I have overcame and accomplished. When I was young, I was super nervous and skittish to do anything that put me in the spotlight alone. Piano recitals or singing in front of a group would make me break out in hives and be so nervous! Once I signed up for the District FBLA Public Speaking competition my Freshman year, I was determined that I would and could overcome this fear. I practiced for hours on that speech and ended up placing first that year and every year since then. Now I love speaking in front of others and always jump at the chance to do so.
Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

My advice would be to be involved in all that is possible. Take risks, even though things may seem scary. Don't be afraid to always be yourself and stand up for what you believe in.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I hope to be a social worker, helping and impacting as many people as I can. I have interned and assisted with young homeless and substance abuse mothers and their children over the Summer and I want to try and help people like that. I also see myself starting a family and being happy as well as successful.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to sing and listen to all different kinds of music.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I'm double jointed. I can distort my fingers and arms in all sorts of weird positions.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep a planner year-round that lets me keep track of all of my tasks and events that I have scheduled. Whenever I feel stressed, I make a list with short term tasks. That helps keep me from getting overwhelmed and keeps me organized on a day to day basis.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are to visit Paris, go for a ride in a hot air balloon, and attend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade one year.

How did you know you wanted to help and advocate for human trafficking victims?

I have always been the kind of person to stand up when I see injustice but it wasn't until my freshman year of high school when I truly grew a passion for the rights of human trafficking victims. When I connected the resources that I held I knew I had to speak up and make it known.

What different kinds of work have you done for human rights?
For the past four years, I have advocated through a non-profit campaign called Dressember. I wear a dress each day in December raising money to fund all sorts of rescue and rehabilitation needs as well as starting conversations through the dresses. I have also traveled across the world to India on a rehabilitation trip for rescued survivors of human trafficking. But my biggest work is the conversations daily I have with friends, family and through my social media bringing the conversation to light and creating awareness all over.

Tell me more about going to India with YouCanFreeUs. What was this experience like?
India was a trip that forever changed me. This trip with YouCanFreeUs showed me the fruit of the work being done. I was able to see these men and women who have been rescued from human trafficking and are on their way to becoming superheroes in their own life. Alone the conversation had given me more of a fire to help bring awareness and do what I can with my resources to help rescue from this modern-day slavery.

What have you learned from meeting with the survivors of human trafficking?

I have re-learned the lesson that no matter how deep or far gone you think your life may be, there's always a light at the end of that tunnel. You can be in the darkest of situations and there is still a way to get out but not only get out, but there is also a way to achieve your dreams and live the life you have always wanted. You are not defined by where you have been; these men and women may have been victims of trafficking but to me and any other advocate you speak to they are true survivors and an inspiration to us all.

What's the biggest way the average human can help raise awareness and help human trafficking victims?
Conversation. This can be with friends, family, people at school or work, or even online through social media. You would be surprised by the number of people who just don't know and are unaware of these events still occurring today. So my biggest tip to all is just having an open conversation and being aware of the signs and possibilities as this happens everywhere, not just across the world.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have yet to accomplish has to be my academic achievements. I was diagnosed with ADD and Dyslexia at an extremely young age, I was also placed in the Gifted and Talented (GT) program making me twice gifted, this brought upon more struggles than I could ever imagine. I was bullied constantly throughout elementary, middle, and high school by both students and some teachers. This was extremely difficult for me to understand and made me feel worthless. I felt like I would never make it in life. My hopes of graduating from high school felt small and less of having the possibility of achieving a further education. Fast forward to now my senior year, I have spent the last two years pursuing an online education that gave me the resources as well as the time to achieve my dreams and let my talents sore and fly high. I Graduated a semester early January 2020 and will go into college with 24 hours of credits completed. This alone has been a great achievement and will always hold close to my heart but I will forever be proud of the fact that I got into all colleges I applied for and will be attending my dream school of 10 years, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Los Angeles Fall 2020.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Work hard, stay humble, and be true to yourself. It is and will always be a difficult path when standing up for what you believe in but you will ALWAYS find the good in every situation. You will have people who support you and people who will want to bring you down but knowing your truth and the good you have created in the world will mean more than any negative comment you will ever receive.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
So much can happen in five years so it is quite fantastic to even imagine the possibilities. I hope that in five years I will have graduated from college with my master's degree and moved on into some kind of career in the Fashion industry weather it is my own company or working as a costume designer for a Hollywood studio. I know the one thing I can guarantee is my advocacy for human rights and prevention of sex/human trafficking globally will continue and will hopefully grow into a larger platform reaching for awareness than ever.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My heart will always belong to dance, after a severe injury in 2018 and surgery in 2019 my dance career ended early. I will always consider myself a dancer and will always participate in my limitations as it brings me great joy in life.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I love to cook. Growing up with Celiac disease and other food allergies I had to learn how to adapt. My parents have always told me that ever since I was a baby I had an eye for cooking; they could barely get me to watch the classic children's shows but the moment The Cooking Channel or Food Network came on I was hooked. Cooking quickly became my outlet while adjusting to life with food allergies and now it is my favorite hidden talent!

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I heavily rely on my faith to help me when things feel overwhelming. God has been so faithful over the years providing such perfect timing with the special opportunities and events I have been able to advocate for and take part in. I have many special people in my life supporting my unique upbringing that has provided such a flexible lifestyle being able to experience more than the average 17 years old would.

3 Things on your bucket list
Achieve the success of my own Fashion Design brand, a brand that gives back the position of every product sold to organizations I stand for.
Travel as much as I can. I never want to put a limitation on the places I will go or the things I can do so wherever I can get an opportunity to travel to my answer will be YES!
Lastly to be a mom. My dream one day is to have three children of my own and to foster to adopt two or more kiddos. My heart has always been tender for children making sure they know they are loved and welcome in this life and the joys that being a mother to me are far too imported to let fly by.

Who do you find inspiring?
My family has to be the most inspiring person I could think of. While there are so many people out there I could say have inspired me, they have not shaped me the way my family has. My mother is the strongest woman you will ever meet and she will always be by my sister and I’s side in support of our aspirations and goals, yet she never shies away to call us out if we are wrong, which has built so much character in me today. My father is my best friend and will always be. He shows me what it looks like to work hard and stay so humble with success and I will carry that with me forever. Lastly, my sister has no idea how much she has impacted my life and how much I have learned from her.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think it is my individuality. I hope and pray when people look at me they see a genuine soul and a girl who is true to herself in every aspect of life. We will never learn anything new by being the same as the person next to you and I hope when people look at me they feel like they can be the truest version of themself and live a life where they aren't afraid of others' criticism.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I would just like to end by saying that nothing is too small or too big to achieve with grit, passion and lots of dedication.

How has your strong faith impacted who you are, and how do you continue to build your faith through your daily life?

My faith has impacted every aspect of my life. Growing up in church, I have always been taught the importance of standing strong in the Lord and sharing my faith with others. I would have never been able to accomplish anything without my faith and God by my side. I am so grateful for my parents and the leaders in my church that have helped me grow as a Christian and helped me become the person I am today. I continue to build my faith by attending church every Sunday and surrounding myself with people who strengthen my love for the Lord. I strive to show others Jesus in daily life and through the activities I am involved in. I feel as if God has given me my talents so that I may use them to further His kingdom.

How have you continued to apply your faith through all that you are involved in?
I continue to apply my faith through all that I am involved in by sharing my faith with those around me and showing my love for the Lord. I believe that God has called me to spread his word by giving me the talents I possess. I strive to show and share my faith by exhibiting the qualities of a Christian. I try to always remember the Word of God and live according to His teachings. My faith is so important to me and I want to let my light shine for the Lord through all that I am involved in. One of the biggest things to me is leading by example and letting my actions speak just as loud as my words. It is so important that I show my faith through my actions and set an example for others of how to live as God sees fit.

As an inspiration to others, how have you set an example on how to live your life through your faith while also putting in full effort to all that you are involved in?
I have set an example of how to live my life by following the guidelines and rules God has outlined for every one of us. I firmly believe that God has a plan for me and that everything happens for a reason on His timing. I put all of my trust in the Lord and know that he walks by my side every day, through every situation. Whenever I am struggling or feel stressed or anxious, I pray and ask God for guidance and reassurance that He has everything under control. My faith helps me put full effort into all that I am involved in and the Lord gives me the strength to always give my all in every circumstance. Sometimes it can be tiring and tough to be involved in so many things, but I always have God on my side helping me be the best person, teammate, club member, and leader I can be.

What do you love most about cheerleading, and what has been your favorite memory being co-captain of your varsity squad?
My favorite part of cheerleading is showing my school spirit and representing my school and community. Being a cheerleader means always staying positive and cheering on my fellow classmates during athletic events. It is such a good feeling to perform in front of the whole community during a football game or stunt for the starting lineup during basketball season. I love creating memories that will last a lifetime, and many of these come from cheerleading. I will never forget my time cheering on my team on both the field and the court. I am so proud to be seen as a role model for the younger girls on my squad and the little girls that watch the games that I cheer for.

What do you enjoy most about being so actively involved in so many different leadership positions and extracurriculars?
I enjoy being a leader in my school and community because of the unique experiences and memories I get to create. Being a yearbook editor and cheerleading captain has allowed me to do things that many people have not had the chance to do. I am very grateful for these opportunities and experiences I have been granted. I love staying busy with all of my extracurriculars and being a part of my high school.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished was being in the cast of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Yuletide Celebration. Yuletide Celebration is a professional, large-scale Christmas production. From first grade to freshman year, my family and I performed roughly eight to nine shows a week during the entire holiday season while also still going to school full time and participating in extracurricular activities. It was a very demanding and exhausting process, but an experience I will remember and cherish for my entire life. I was able to perform with many famous and talented people along with the incomparable Maestro Everly and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would advise someone to always do your best and be the hardest worker in the room. I would also tell them to remember who you are and stay true to your beliefs and values.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years, I plan to be a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Advertising. I hope to have a job in PR and a lifelong career doing what I love. For the future beyond that, I hope to be married raising my family with strong Christian values in a financially stable household.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

My favorite activity is spending time with my twin sister. We do everything together and I am almost always with her. She is my best friend and I do not know what I would do without her. We both enjoy spending time with our friends and doing the things we love with them.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is my ability to play the cello. I was in orchestra for five years, all through middle school and the beginning of high school.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized by staying on top of things and not procrastinating. I try to always get ahead, so I do not fall behind.

3 Things on your bucket list
One thing on my bucket list is to study abroad in college. I also want to work for Disney World and travel to all of the Disney locations around the world. Lastly, I would like to live on the beach and learn how to surf.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find veterans and soldiers who have fought and are currently fighting for our freedom inspiring. I believe that these men and women are the bravest people in our society and sacrifice so much so that we can live in a safe country with freedoms that many people around the world unfortunately do not have.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope that I am inspiring because of the kindness and compassion I show toward others. I always try to stay positive and upbeat and encouraging to my peers.
