Bella Monteleone - Louisiana
Nomination & Photography by CharlotteKay Photography
Issue 64 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Bella Monteleone is inspiring because she is a light in everything she does. Since I've known her, she's been a very hard worker and is driven for what she loves. She's still in high school and is running a makeup business as well as keeping up with her academics and working another job. She has big dreams and I know that she'll reach them with her determination. She inspires me every day to keep going and supports me and others for doing what we love.

Tell us about your makeup business and what it entails.
I am a freelance makeup artist and own my own business, Beauty By Bella. I specialize in natural, glowy makeup. My favorite makeup to do is bridal makeup. In my business, I strive to make people feel beautiful.

How did you get started with your business and what do you love most about it?
I started my business when I was 15 years old. I was always the makeup friend. I would do everyone’s makeup for school dances. I fell in love with it as an art form. It became my way to express myself. I had been doing it for so long, I said I may as well try to make a career out of it!

Where can people find you online for your business?
You can find me online for my business on Instagram @beautyngracebybel or my Facebook @Bella Monteleone!

What have you learned about yourself as a business owner?
As a business owner, I have learned how hard working and dedicated I am to my craft. Makeup is something I am so passionate about it, and I will always find new ways to improve.

What was the hardest part of starting your own business, and what do you love most about it?
The hardest part about starting my own business was trusting the process. To have a successful business, you have to build a clientele. It was a really difficult process and took time. Now that my business is up and running, my favorite part is how much fun I have making people feel like the most beautiful version of themselves!

Where else do you work and what have you learned about the general public through this job?
Since 2021, I have worked at a local barn where I help maintain and keep the barn running. Through my job, I have met some of the most hardworking, amazing people I have ever met, I consider them my family. I have learned so many life lessons through this job, especially from my boss, Mrs. Angie. She and everyone else have taught me that no matter what happens, if you keep your head up high and do the best you can, everything will work out in the end.

What do you love most about school and what will you miss most once you graduate?
At my school, the thing I love the most is the community. At Pope John Paul, it really is a family. One thing I will miss are my teachers. My teachers this year are some of the best I have ever had. Especially my history teacher, Ms. Lipscomb. She makes me feel like I can talk to her whenever I need, and she gives the best advice. I’m going to miss going to talk to her every day after school until my car isn’t blocked in from carline!

As a senior, what advice would you leave behind to younger students?
The best advice I would give to younger students is to enjoy your high school years. I didn’t have much of a high school experience being homeschooled. My freshmen year was covid, and my sophomore and junior were both online. Now that I’m back in school, I know how much I’m going to miss it. I am making so many memories that will be treasured forever.

How did you find and why did you choose CharlotteKay Photography for your photographer?
CharlotteKay Photography has been my best friend for 2 years. We met in a pumpkin patch, where I approached her, and she asked to take pictures of me. Since then, we have been attached at the hip.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it, you would most likely find me in my room playing around with my makeup! I’m always practicing and trying to find new techniques.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. Where do you stand out?
My family is filled with some of the most loving people I know. They have always supported me and are my biggest supporters. I feel like I fit in with them because I have their work ethic and determination. I stand out with my theatrical abilities. I’m not afraid to get in front of a crowd and belt my heart out!

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
A family tradition I hope never ends is out Disney trips. Ever since I was little, we try to go once a year. It is my favorite thing we do together because everyone always has so much fun.

Tell us about the Latino Club and what you do there.
The Latino Club is a club two of my good friends founded last year, so when they asked me to be Vice President, I was very excited to accept the offer. I knew this would be an amazing opportunity to help raise appreciation for the Latino community at our school and spread our beautiful culture.

Which is your favorite memory from Latino Club?
My favorite memory has got to be selling empanadas (made by a member of our club) and my favorite dessert, obleas, at our school’s volleyball game as a fundraiser for our activities and events.

What are your responsibilities as treasurer of the Marketing Club?
My responsibilities include meeting with the founders of the club and our school’s principal to be able to come up with, coordinate, and plan ideas for fundraisers so we can fund our many amazing projects, as well as keep track of our funds and how we use them.

How would you describe yourself as a leader? I would describe myself as a loving leader - one who takes on the burdens of the group to be able to make everything run smoothly, one who makes sure everyone feels heard and cared for, and one who everyone feels safe to always trust.

What do you love most about golf?
What I love most about golf is the relationships you can make with the people you golf with. I love the girls on my golf team and our coach, and I know that golf is the kind of sport you can play while talking to others and helping others.

What do you do when volunteering at your church and why is this important to you?
I sometimes help run some holiday events at the church, but what I have done more regularly is leading small groups for the middle school service. I love connecting with younger kids and helping them in their walks with Christ, being there for them and seeing them grow.

What is your favorite class this year, and what is the most interesting thing you've learned?
My favorite class is AP computer science. I was very nervous going into the class because I had never coded before, but I actually picked up on it pretty quickly, and now, being able to make my own apps from scratch is the most interesting thing I’ve learned, and I love how creative I can get!

Picture
Photography by Traci Sproule Photography
How did you find and why did you choose Traci Sproule Photography for your photographer?
Traci is my school’s photographer for special events and sports. So, when looking for a Senior Portrait photographer, my mom asked if I knew of any good people or companies, and I immediately remembered how lively, caring, and professional Traci was in all our shoots, and how her high spirits and energy just radiated the field.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Traci has been absolutely amazing. I’ve been working with her for almost three years now, and it’s been such a blessing finding someone who would really listen to our wants and work with my mom and I in getting the perfect angles, shots, and backgrounds. She’s absolutely lovely to work with!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would probably tell them to work hard, make sacrifices, and trust God. I wouldn’t be where I am and who I am today if I let my worries get to me, or if I chose laziness over drive.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself in medical school studying to become a psychiatrist. I want to be surrounded by a loving, supportive community, and still super close with my family and friends!

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mother inspiring. She’s a single mom who has raised me better than I could ever asked for, loves and trusts God above all else, and is maybe just the smartest woman I know - and yet, she’s also the most humble woman I know.

What do you love about learning and why is it important to you to maintain a 4.0?
The reason I love learning is because gaining new knowledge, Learning about the world and how it works makes me realize different things in my life that stand out and I understand why things work the way they do. The reason it’s so important to keep a 4.0 gpa is not only to show the teachers you're working hard but to prove to yourself your hard work is paying off. When you work hard, and it shows it’s gives you a good boost that you want to keep doing well because it pays off

What class is your favorite this year and what is the most fascinating thing you've learned?
My favorite class this year is anatomy. I love this class because learning how your body works makes you pay attention to what you do to your body. The most fascinating thing I’ve learned so far is all the different joints and sides of your body. There are so many specific names for each one.

What do you do while volunteering as the Baseball Manager?
As baseball social media manager I get to see first-hand of how coaching works, I keep score, post pictures on social media and run errands for them. I love doing this because my next choice for my lifelong career is coaching. I'm seeing it firsthand and the coach helps me understand different things as well as realizing the responsibilities a coach has.

What have you learned about yourself in this position?
I have learned to hold myself to a different standard. I've developed a different type of confidence in myself due to having to do certain tasks. I help the team. It shows me that little things do matter in the types of situations I am in.

Tell us about your Softball career. When did you start and where are you with it now?
My softball career started when I was 4 years old and my whole life was a part of it. Due to being burned out and enjoying different things I have decided to not play my senior year.

What do you love about Volleyball and your team?
What I love most about volleyball is the environment and the different emotions you go through in a game. I love my team because we all have different personalities but, on the court, we all find a way to merge and bring each other up.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had all day to do something you would find me out shopping for others or myself. I love shopping and seeing the joy on my friends and families faces when I buy them something new. I also love shopping for myself and buying little things occasionally because I work hard for my money and being able to show that I can provide for myself brings me joy.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. How do you stand out?
I am the baby of the family. I have an older sister. We all have strong personalities but I'm very easy going and funny. I make my family laugh and smile. I throw myself out there and it brings joy to our nights.

What is a family memory you will never forget?
A family memory I will never forget when we went zip lining in Jamaica and rafting. We did rope swinging and we all attempted doing a back flip and it did not go as planned.

What is it like having your mom as your photographer? Do you help plan the photo shoots?
I like having my mom as my photographer because we get to do everything in our own time. Another reason I love having my mom as my photographer is because I get to show my own poses and express my own opinions.

Tell us about your experience. What did you love most about it?
What I love most about my experiences with being pictured is the way I can joke and mess around with my mom. The other thing about the experience I love being able to take goofy pictures and them turn out really good.

What made you choose the soup kitchen as a place to volunteer and what did you learn about yourself while there?
I chose the soup kitchen because no one deserves to go hungry. I think what they are doing there is so inspiring and selfless. While there, I learned that no matter what someone’s life looks like, you never know what they are doing through and I needed to remember that when in society.

What other volunteer opportunities have you had?
I do so much community service with FCCLA! We volunteer to serve food to veterans, clean up the school, volunteer at thrift stores, and so so much more!

What else would you like to talk about?

Kennedy Koss

Kennedy Koss – Montana
Nomination & Photography by Jennifer Ray Photography
Issue 64 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kennedy is all around amazing. She is kind, sweet, funny, smart and so very dedicated. Her passion for her family ranch, animals, 4H and sports are apparent when you see her resume of achievements. The list of awards Kennedy has is impressive...but not as impressive as she is herself while in her presence. Her thoughtfulness and kindness shines through and her laughter lights up any room. She is truly a senior that I have enjoyed working with this year!

Tell us about your family ranch and why you love growing up there.
Growing up on my family ranch has shaped me into the person I am becoming. Our ranch has been in our family for almost 115 years. I have learned what hard work is and how important communication is. I’ve loved everything about our ranch because of my love of animals and the outdoors. My favorite thing is sitting out on our butte and taking in all the fresh air and scenery.

What animals do you have on your ranch and what are your responsibilities with them?
We have just about every animal you would expect on a ranch. We have cows, horses, chickens, dogs, cats, 4-H steers, and 4-H pigs. My responsibilities with these animals can vary at different times. I ride my horse, feed and water the chickens, cats, dog, and 4-H animals. And am frequently working with my 4-H animals throughout the year.

What do you do in 4H, and which is your favorite? Why?
In 4-H I have participated in pig, steer, sheep, sewing, quilting, and photography. My favorite event in 4-H has got to be pigs. I have currently been in 4-H for 10 years and have taken a pig every year. The reason they are my favorite is because they are low maintenance and I put a lot of work in to win showmanship and market. I have multiple trophies from all of these events I have participated in.

What is a favorite memory from this activity?
My favorite memory from 4-H is one of my very first ones. It was only my second year of 4-H and I was taking a sheep with my brother who was five years older than me and way more experienced. The judge ended up picking mine for grand champion and I had the biggest grin on my face because I had just beat him. There is a picture my mom got of the exact moment and it’s still one of my favorite pictures to this day.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Ray Photography

What sports do you play?
I have been a three sport athlete my entire high school career. I participate in Volleyball, Basketball, and Golf.

What is a favorite accomplishment from your favorite sport?
My favorite accomplishment by far is being able to be the varsity libero of the first volleyball team from Malta to make it to state in 20 years. And only the fourth team in Mette History. This was the most incredible experience I have got to be a part of.

What other clubs do you belong to?
I am a part of many clubs including pep club, student council, National Honor Society, FCCLA, BPA.

What leadership roles have you had, and how would you describe yourself as a leader?
I am the Student Body and Student Council Secretary/Treasurer, Pep Club Vice President, FCCLA Secretary, and 4-H Present. I would describe myself as a leader as a team player, confident, hard worker, committed, and persistent.

What awards have you received?
I have accomplished many things in my brief life on this Earth so far. I have received numerous trophies in 4-H for Pig, Sheep, Steer, Quilting, and many more. I received the Athletic Scholars Award at my High School for being a three sport athlete while maintaining the highest GPA for girls. And I also achieved second team All-Conference for Volleyball this last fall.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Ray Photography

What else would you like to talk about?
Not only do I achieve awards, but I also do large sums of volunteer work for St. Mary's Catholic Church. Without my faith and my family I wouldn't be where I am today.

What volunteer work have you done and which was your favorite? Why?
I have done lots of volunteer work through 4-H, my church and many other clubs. My favorite volunteer work was at the Hi-Line Retirement Center where I had created Christmas ornaments, hid Easter eggs, played bingo, sang with them, and planted flowers. This was my favorite because the residents were so fun to hang out with and I learned lots from them.

Tell us about your faith and why it's important to you.
My faith is very important to me because I wouldn’t be where I am at today without my faith and God. Going to church on Sundays and Wednesdays I try to grow in my Catholic faith everyday. All my problems and glory are given to God everyday and it is the reason I succeed.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Ray Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Jennifer Ray Photography for your senior photographer?

Jennifer used to live in Malta when I was younger and she took my first communion pictures. I thought it would fitting if she got to do my senior pictures since she already knew me. And besides the fact that she’s amazing!!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was so great. My favorite part is that she is so personable. Jennifer was open to anything we wanted but also had many unique ideas of her own. I was very comfortable and enjoyed my time with her.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
What my nomination doesn't cover is my determination for my future. I plan on attending vet school and have been working hard all my life to achieve that goal. I am also very good at multitasking and being very diverse in clubs and other extra curricular activities. When I put my mind to it I will achieve it and I will put all my effort into it, just like this opportunity before me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
One thing I'm passionate about is the outdoors and everything about it. I am in love with the trees, grass, mountains, and pretty much everything else. Not only do I love the scenery, but the animals that go along with it. When I am outdoors I can sit in silence and just observe and listen and it gives me peace. I think this love has formed from living on a ranch an hour from town. When I am encased in nature I feel at home. That's why I love hunting and fishing so much.

Grace Williams – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Shawn Hodges Photography
Issue 64 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Grace Williams is a committed student and member of the National Honor Society with a servant's love for others. She serves faithfully at her church in many areas, including kids' ministry. She's an avid participant in youth group and is preparing for a mission trip this summer. Grace started dancing at age seven and has blossomed into a talented dancer, winning various dance-related awards. Because she takes joy everywhere she goes, she captures that joy in her painting and drawing. She has truly been an inspiration in my life!

Picture
Photography by Shawn Hodges Photography

Where will your mission trip be and what will you be doing?
I will be going to the LA Dream Center where we will serve the community. We will be helping the dream center with anything they need, picking up trash, helping at the food bank, yard work, or possibly street ministry.

What are you most looking forward to about it?
I am looking forward to serving others and not myself.

Tell us more about your dance career.
I danced for 8 years in my hometown, 3 of them competitively. I did solos, duets, trios, and small and large groups. We moved in 2019, and I began dancing at a new studio, but then COVID happened. I had danced for nine years total, but decided to step away from going to a dance studio my sophomore year. Though my passion for dance is still thriving, it's in a different way, and that is teaching.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
I have won many medals from competition and made it into the top ten for my solo, but my favorite accomplishment from dance is the opportunity it has given: is the ability to teach children.

What has been your favorite senior memory so far?
My favorite senior memory has been painting my senior parking spot. It features a dancer, my favorite colors, Ecclesiastes 3:4, and Jeremiah 31:13, among other things. My dad took me to get paint; my mom and sister helped me paint; my brother-in-law brought me water and a hat; and one of my brothers delivered things I forgot.

How did you find and why did you choose Shawn Hodges Photography for your senior photographer?
I met Shawn through church. She has become a very good friend of my family, and her photos always come out beautiful. She listens to my ideas and was excited when we talked about them.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I love taking photos with Shawn because she is calm and does not rush her work. She helps me to be comfortable enough to express myself and she captures all different sides of my personality.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have won awards not only for dance but also for my art and photography. In June 2022, I was employed to help teach art at a summer camp. I am currently volunteering as a teacher's aide for my art teacher. I truly enjoy helping the students. I have been honing my teaching skills by teaching dance to some young girls since September 2022. As of January 2023, I am officially self-employed and teach dance to elementary school-aged girls in first through third grade. I also work closely with my school and church to serve my community.

Tell us about your favorite art piece you created. We'd love to see a picture too!
It's difficult to pick just one because they all express something different, but one that I am particularly proud of is the baby picture of myself made out of watercolor titled "Once Upon a Time" because it dates back to when I was one. It won first place at a local art competition in September 2022.

What do you love to create with most and why?
I enjoy working with a variety of media, which makes it difficult to choose just one.

What have you learned about yourself as a volunteer for your art teacher?
I have learned that I love working with children, even though it can be really difficult. I have also learned that I like to have an organized space and detailed instructions.

Picture
Artwork by Grace Williams

What is the hardest thing about teaching younger girls to dance? What is the best part?
The hardest thing about teaching dance is being strict. The best part of teaching dance is getting to know the students, interacting with them, and watching them learn and grow.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I love deep conversations, so the topic would be how precious life and time are. No one knows when they or anyone else will die. Sometimes death is sudden, and other times it is slow and gut-wrenching. After my brother-in-law passed, I am grateful I took time off to be with him because I will never get those moments back. People are selfish, and for that reason, it is important to teach others to cherish the moments one has with the people they love and who love them. Because no two lives are alike, each is precious.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite pastime, even though not everyone enjoys it, is watching anime, K-dramas, and reading manga.

Who do you find inspiring?
My brother-in-law, Lee, is inspiring to me because even though he was going through cancer, he lived each day to the fullest and loved God and his family.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I have a hard time talking about myself because when I help others, it is not because of a resume but out of a genuine love to serve. I want people to know they are loved by someone, even if they don’t know me.

She is working with mental health professionals within her community to help those suffering have a voice. Jesi is a leader in many aspects of her life and has committed herself to community service. She is encouraging her peers to step out of their comfort zone to impact lives one person at a time.

Tell us about your rise to Miss Slidell's Outstanding Teen and what steps you took to get there.
I decided two weeks prior to the pageant to compete to help me get more comfortable with interviews. Since I am moving to New York in the fall and will interview with producers, casting agents and directors I really wanted to polish my interview skills. I was required to prepare a talent, fitness routine and on-stage question along with evening wear competitions. It was a whirlwind of preparations in only two weeks but in the end, I won the crown and will compete for the state title of Miss Louisiana’s Outstanding Teen in April.

What does it mean to you to be in this position, and what are your roles and responsibilities?
This position has given me an audience to promote my social impact statement as well as be a public face within my community. I am not only representing myself but also my school and community. My responsibilities include appearances, interviews, speaking engagements and preparation for the state competition.

Why did you choose mental health for your platform?
Someone who has struggled with my own mental health and feeling like I am alone, I want to help someone else find that inter peace. It is not enough for you to tell someone that they are not alone or that you are here for them, to help them overcome feelings of anxiety, depression and loneliness. We must normalize these feelings and give young people and adults the ability to freely talk about how they feel without stigma. I am one of the lucky ones that my family listened and helped me talk through what I was feeling without judgment. So many people are embarrassed or feel judged because that is the stigma our society has placed on individuals who are struggling with mental health crisis. It is okay to not have it all together or to simply feel sad sometimes.

What do you feel is the biggest weight on teens shoulders today, and a suggestion to lighten the load?
Acceptance is the biggest weight teens are shouldering today. So many teens are finding ways to fit in or be accepted within their community that lead to a bad outcome. The first step is loving yourself. You cannot love others and be accepted if you don’t first love yourself. Also, our society needs more kindness and love. Everyone is facing something that we know nothing about. As teens we need more empathy for others but instead, we are self-absorbed and don’t want to find out why someone is struggling.

What has been your favorite community service project and why?
I recently participated in a fashion show sponsored by Children’s Hospital. Disabled and terminally ill children were able to get their makeup and hair done along with modeling the outfit of their choice. To see a child smile impacted my life and is an event I will never forget. These children are facing so much and could choose to be sad, instead choose happiness and spread that throughout our community. This is a gift I wish other teens could witness.

What leadership roles have you had within your opportunities and what have you learned about yourself as a leader?
I am currently the Historian for Thespian Troupe 775; Secretary for Slidell High Choir and Spiritual Leader for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I have learned that I am an observant leader that brings ideas to the table but also listens to others’ ideas. I am also a empathic, open minded, passionate and motivating to those around me.

As a senior, what legacy do you hope to leave behind to younger teens?
I hope the legacy I leave for younger teens is to not be afraid to be your true authentic self and to be kind. The world is lacking kindness, so I am accepting and kind to others to help change our world.

With your senior year half over, if you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would be on a stage performing all day every day. This is my true passion in life, and it gives me great joy.

How did you find and why did you choose Jennifer Abney Photography for your photographer?
What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Jennifer is my second cousin but beyond that one of my biggest supporters. I have seen her work grow over the years and loved that she styled her clients. She has a gift to guide her clients to reflect their personalities in the outfits they choose from her style closet. My shoot was so much fun because she allowed me to try new things and really had a vision for my shoot.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Jesi is a four-year member of the talented theatre program and a part of the theater community since the age of five. Jesi’s drive and passion for her craft has opened opportunities beyond her imagination. She recently took the biggest leap of her life by auditioning for The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and was accepted. She wants to share with her peers to pursue your dreams no matter what or who stands in your way.

What has been your favorite role you've played? What was the production and why was this your favorite?
My favorite role was Little Red in “Into the Woods.” It was vocally challenging, but the music is beautifully written. I really liked that it took me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me with the dept of the character.

What do you wish everyone knew about acting on stage?
I wish people knew that acting on stage is not as easy as it looks. A lot of time, commitment and character building goes into making the character believable. Not only is the choreography physically taxing but acting is mentally challenging.

What would you most like to talk about?

My generation is often criticized for the many things we do wrong. I want to teach the generations before us that we are accepting and diverse which sets us apart. Our inclusivity has open doors for acceptance and diversity that I feel we can teach other generations to come.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Forty three percent of young adults aged twelve to twenty-five have experienced some type of mental health crisis in 2021. These statistics keep doubling each year. Society has placed a stigma of embarrassment if you have a mental health crisis. We should be encouraging our children to share their mental health, good or bad with others. No-one should be embarrassed or feel different because of their own mental health. We cannot change these statistics unless we are sharing and normalizing our own mental health experiences.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever had to do was auditioning for The New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts. This was a huge leap of faith hoping that all the hard work and time I put into my craft would gain me acceptance to my dream school. I worked hard for months with acting and voice coaches to prepare me for that moment. After the audition I felt wonderful and knew that I could not have done anything more. It was one of my favorite moments when they told me that I had been accepted.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Stay true to yourself and never change for anyone. Hard work, commitment and passion will always get you where you need to be in every aspect of your life. Ignore anyone who tells you that you can’t do something or that you won’t do something. Always network and stay in contact with those that can help you along your journey.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I will be in living in New York and see myself on Broadway in a musical living my dream.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
When I am stressed or have anxiety over something, spending time in nature, grounding myself with the earth and writing in my journal are my favorite things to do.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I discovered a couple of years ago that I know how to Yodel. This form of vocal performance is a dying art and not many people know how to control voice cracks in order to Yodel.

3 Things on your bucket list
1) Meet Harry Styles
2) Visit Rome
3) Skydiving

Who do you find inspiring?
My sister is inspiring to me because she believes in me and is always there for me. She has pulled me through some dark times in my life and made me see how important and special I am. She is observant and has an innate way of pulling the best out of each person she encounters. She gives incredible advice and I know that no matter what she will always be there for me.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel that I am inspiring because I am true to myself and kind to others. I do not waiver who I am even if it is the uncool thing to do. I stick up for the underdog and absolutely do not tolerate others mistreating or being unkind to others. I stand up for what I believe in and am following my lofty dreams of performing on Broadway.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Fun Fact: I have three functioning kidneys.

Through her involvement with her church youth group, school activities, and her job, where she works as a preschool teacher, Maggie not only inspires the next generation but tomorrows as well. How did you find and why did you choose Joelle Brooks Photography for your photographer?
I met Joelle through church, I met one of her kids from going to Youth Group at the church and got to meet her one day, and then eventually I fell in love with her. She took my pictures for the first time for a school dance last year, and she’s been taking pictures for me ever since.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Tell us about your involvement with your youth group. My involvement with my youth group involves going to church every Wednesday night, going to all our events we do or go to. Some of our events are Motion which is a conference in Birmingham Alabama. We also have a camp during the fall and summer called Crew Camp and we have all of our church campuses come together. The thing I love the most is helping people find a group that loves them and helping them get closer to God.

How has your church helped you? How have you helped back?
My church has helped me through so much! Before I moved to my church I really didn't go to a church weekly, I was at a church where I didn’t feel like I had many friends. When I moved to Desperation Church I felt welcomed, I felt like I had friends, and I felt accepted. By helping back I have gone I have worked with serve days that we do on the first Saturday of every month. I volunteer with other youth to help with the younger kids during church service. I dress up in costume and play a character for the children's church. I also help welcome guests with youth to make sure they feel welcome with the rest of the youth.

What school activities are you a part of? Which is your favorite and why?
School activities I’m a part of include Diamond Doll and FCCLA. If I had to pick a favorite I don’t know if I could, they are both my favorite for different reasons and they are both different. Diamond Doll is special to me because I’ve grown up with a dad who was so involved with baseball and loved the sport, when my dad stopping playing I was sad because his team was like my brothers, when I got into high school is when Diamond Doll started so I knew I wanted to be a part of it since I knew a lot of the sport, and I get to help decorate the locker rooms and help out the baseball moms, coaches, and sponsors on game nights. FCCLA is also fun for me because its a cooking class and like Diamond Doll, FCCLA makes me think of someone and that's my Nuni, growing up me and my cousins always cooked with my Nuni and FCCLA lets to cook/bake more than when I’m with her because I could learn something new and bring it to her and teach her new things. In FCCLA we also get to go on trips. This past school year we got to go to Montgomery for a competition and my school had pretty high rankings.

What have you learned about yourself as an employee?
I have learned to appreciate the kids more than the actual job itself. I have learned that I can handle more than I thought that I was able to. Being in charge of around thirteen kids in one day can be a big task to handle and I’m glad that I’ve been able to take it on and I’m proud that I can handle that task daily.

What do you love most about working with children?
My favorite part of working with kids would most definitely be the things they say. They are so funny but so serious at the same time. Something else is how caring they are. If I trip they run to me immediately and ask me if I’m okay.

Picture
Photography by Joelle Brooks Photography

How would you say your job has changed your life and perspective of kids?
I’ve always loved kids but working with them has taught me to be more patient. No two kids are the same and I’ve had to learn how to connect and adapt to each one differently. Sometimes it can be really hard to learn how to deal with each kid in a different way, but it is so rewarding when you and a kid finally connect and just click.

How would your friends describe you?
My best friend has told me she describes me as outgoing, because of how I will go up and talk to anybody I see or anyone that I know. Also, I’ve been told that I'm very loving and that I’m really easy to talk to. I’ve been described as a very loyal person, and that I’m really supportive when it comes to anything.

Where would we find you and your friends during free time?
Most of the time me and friends would be shopping together, or you could find us hanging out in town. Me and a bunch of my friends all go park at sonic and sit around and talk and hangout. We also go to downtown nutrition a lot, it's a really good tea place to go to in Cullman.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. Where do you stand out?
My mom and dad have been married for 23 years and I am the oldest of 2 kids. I have a little brother that is 11. We are a very close family and I feel like we all fit together. As for standing out, I'm the only girl and hope that my love for God and my church makes me stand out as a good role model for my younger brother.

What is a favorite family memory?
My favorite family memory is probably going to Disney World. Even though I was in 5th grade it was still so much fun and I will always remember it.

What do you and your BFF Nicole like to do together?
We have always loved to have big sleepovers since we were little, and we also like to go on lunch and mall dates.

Where would we find you if you had all day to do and nothing to do it?
I would take a drive to somewhere new and explore taking pictures.

What do you love most about senior year?
You are finally at the top and almost there, so every experience is extra fun and special. I have made everything around experiences, and got a photography internship to focus on.

How did you find and why did you choose Jeannie Seip Photography for your photographer?
I know multiple people that have gotten photos done by her, and I love the different settings she chose for each person.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
We did two different locations, and we had so much fun at the first. For the second, we went to a river and got into the water, which had to have been my favorite part!

What are you most looking forward to in the next 6 months?
Seeing where the road takes me after graduation, and all the new people who are going to come into my life.

What is your family like and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
My family has always been growing since I was little, when it just used to be my mom and I, I gained 3 step sisters, and two more siblings to follow in the next years. I loved to help my mom take care of my siblings when they were younger, as well as spending time with my stepsisters.

What is a favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is when I was little, my sister and I dress up as matching voodoo dolls! It was so much fun, and it was also the first time I dyed my hair!

What is a favorite family tradition that you hope never ends?
A small tradition my family does is for every event we make our chip dip. It’s a recipe my family has always followed, and we can always expect to have.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a very free spirited person, always being myself and not caring what others think. I want to see the world, and make a change in the world for the better.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?

The power of music is something I have been recently passionate about. Doing research on how music can affect your mental health, surroundings, and current mood is something that really interests me.

Tell us more about this!
Music is such a powerful thing that not many people really think about, but it is connected to everything and has such a positive impact on your mental health. When listening to music you really enjoy, your brain releases dopamine, the happy chemical! Starting the day with a fast tempo, upbeat song can set you up for a positive day just with that!

What else would you like to talk about?
I love being in nature, and with the earth. I express that love through photography, but capturing moments in time forever.

What are your favorite things to take pictures of and why?
I like to take photos of nature, and buildings. I always think it’s so beautiful, and it gives me a great excuse to find new places.

What style of photographer would you say you are?
I would say my style is more quiet, and outdoors. Most of my photos are very calm, however I love exploring with different scenes.

Describe a favorite picture you took.
One of my favorite pictures I have taken was at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. The sun behind the rock with the trees just makes the colors pop in the layers of nature!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

At 13 years old I had to have major hip surgery to fix my hip dysplasia, which put me in a wheelchair for recovery for about 5 weeks. I had to have help with everything, and still go to school, so I really just had to set my mind to it!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to always live in the moment. Don’t be worried about the “what ifs” in life, and focus on the experiences and possibilities of today.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I hope to have traveled around the United States, and begun visiting other countries. I would like to have a stable income and good people around me!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
One of the little things I love to do in my free time is color, or re-read books I have. Coloring is a good anxiety and stress reliever, and is a fun way to pass time.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Yes, I can play “I can’t help Falling in Love With you” on piano!

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to see all 50 states, go skydiving, and release baby turtles into the ocean.

Who do you find inspiring?
Someone I find inspiring would be my art teacher. She is a free spirit, and so much fun to be around and have as a teacher. I love that about her, and her positive energy.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring because I always try and be positive when people need it. Sometimes just giving someone a smile, or a kind sentence can really make a persons day, and I enjoy being that person.

Alexis Tobin

Picture

Alexis Tobin – Indiana
Nomination & Photography by Moments in Time by Kimberly Kreuger
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lexi is a typical teenage girl. She participates in 4H. She started as a mini even before Kindergarten. She started showing llamas, then sheep, and currently dogs! She dances at Elite Dance and Acrobatics in Martinsville. This is her second year with their competitive team. This is also her second year with the Influencer team. Being part of both of these teams has brought her a long way. Her self confidence and self esteem have really grown. She loves to encourage others and is always the first to give out a kind word. She is outgoing and a free-spirited individual.

Picture

Tell us about your participation in 4-H showing livestock and dogs.
My participation in showing my dog is me working with her in showmanship, agility, and obedience. When showing the sheep I have to walk it in the ring by holding it around the neck and behind the ears. Then, you stack them by putting your knee in their chest to make them stand up straight. For llamas, I would teach them to go over jumps and different obstacles.

Which is your favorite animal to show and why?
My favorite animal to show is my dog because of the bond we have together.

Which is the easiest and which is the hardest? What is your reasoning for each answer?
The easiest one to show would be sheep because you walk them in the ring and make sure they stay stacked correctly. Llamas would be in between easy and hard because you have to get them to do obstacles. Dogs are the hardest to show because you have to have a bond with your dog. If you don’t have a bond or mutual respect then they won’t listen to you and it won't be fun.

What do you love most about competitive dance?
I love the girls on the team and all of my coaches. They are all very supportive when it comes to the dances and learning the new routines. It is very exciting going on stage and performing for the judges.

What has been a favorite accomplishment with dance?
My favorite accomplishment is being really close with some of the girls on the team. I have built a lot of friendships and feel like we are all part of a big family. It has made me become a stronger dancer because I feel like they are pushing me and helping me along the way.

How did you find and why did you choose Kim Krueger for your photographer?
I had a few friends that were already on the team. One of the girls asked me to come to a photoshoot with her and I met Kim. I saw how close all the girls were and I decided I wanted to be on the team. Kim is a great leader for the team and is always very encouraging.

What do you love most about being on the influencer team?
I love how all of the girls are so close and they all get along really well. They are always saying kind things to one another. We want to build each other up and be positive.

What has your experience been like? What have you loved most about it?
My experience has been amazing being on the team. It has boosted my confidence a lot. I have loved that I have become friends with the girls on the team.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have also shown dogs in AKC shows.
I was an extra in a movie, The Rose Wagon, that will hopefully be out next Christmas.

What is the difference between showing dogs in 4H vs AKC shows?
The difference between AKC and 4H is that AKC is a professional dog show organization. The dogs are purebred dogs and they are trying to win titles. In 4H, it is more for fun and the dogs do not have to be purebred. They can be a mixed breed.

What types of dogs have you shown and what is special about them?
I have shown 2 Australian Shepherds also known as Aussies. My dog is a Sheltie/mini Aussie. The most special thing about the dogs I have shown is the bond that I have with each of them.

What is The Rose Wagon about and what was your role as an extra? How did you get the role and what did you do for it?
The Rose wagon is a Christmas story, a season of hope. I played a mean girl and I had to mock the little girl. I had a friend that was playing one of the main roles and he told me about the part. They were recruiting extras and he asked if I wanted to do it. I just kind of lucked into it. I had never done anything like that before or even thought about doing it, so it was exciting to be able to be a part of it.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about my family and my friends and I would also like to talk about my dog.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. Where do you stand out?
I am the youngest in the family. I have 2 older sisters, Gracie and Taylor. I have two older cousins as well, Shelby and Abby. So, my grandma and grandpa have 5 granddaughters. We are all pretty close and a bit crazy. I fit in with the craziness. I stand out because I am the only one who is involved in dance.

What is a family memory you'll never forget?
One of my favorite family memories is the vacation to dance nationals last year. We went to Branson, MO. We stayed in a guest house in the country. She had pigs, chickens, cats and dogs that ran the property. We spent a lot of the time with other dancers and their families. I had a blast with my closest friend, Emma. We hung out with each other almost everyday.

Tell us about your dog.
Her name is Zoey and she is 3 years old. She is super sweet and loves pretty much everyone she meets. I wanted a dog that would cuddle and want to be with me all the time and I got just that.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about how I love to dance and how others should do it. Dance has helped with my confidence level and my self esteem. It is like having a second family. I feel that being a part of Elite Dance and Acrobatics has really been an amazing experience for me. I want other teens to be a part of something special that builds them up and offers friendships that last for a long time.

Chloee Jaworski

1/17/2023

Picture

Chloee Jaworski – Michigan
Nomination & Photography by Melonie Marie Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Chloee Jaworski is an inspiring teen with drive, determination, and desire to serve! She opted for rigorous courses of AP and dual enrollment classes, and secured employment at a vision center to gain experience and knowledge to reach her goal of becoming an optometrist. Chloee seeks opportunities to be a leader and positive role model. She’s been a class officer, NHS VP, Rotary Interact President, peer mentor, and organized events for children in her community. Currently, she’s training to be a yoga instructor to help youth appreciate its health benefits. Compassion and focus on giving are evident by her actions!

Tell us about your AP and dual enrollment classes.
I have taken 10 different AP and dual enrollment courses over the past two years. I am currently taking a dual enrollment Biology, and Advanced Placement Calculus. I love that these classes both challenge me to work harder and be more responsible. They help me prepare and put me ahead in my college courses.

Why do you work so hard in your education?
I work so hard on my education because I know what I am learning now is going to prepare me for my future career.

What is your favorite class this year, and what is the most fascinating thing you've learned?
My favorite class is calculus. Not because it is easy but instead because it is hard. It pushes me out of my comfort zone, and makes me work hard to be successful. It has made me realize that I’m not bad at math. I just have to put extra time in to be good at it.

What made you decide to become an optometrist?
As I was looking for career options, I was encouraged by my family and by my counselor to set up some job shadows to get first hand experience of what some of the jobs I was interested in were like. I reached out to my personal optometrist, and she gladly offered for me to come in for a day. After that day, I immediately knew that was what I wanted to become.

What is your best leadership quality?
My best leadership quality is that I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Good leaders believe in the people they work with. I try to gather as many facts about a situation as possible before making a decision.

What do you love about being a role model for others?
I mostly love being a role model for young children. They are very impressionable, and young girls need good role models to show them that they can grow up to be anything that they want to be.

What events do you plan for the children in your community?
Last year, I started planning events for children in my community through Rotary Interact at my school. Since then, I have organized a reading group for students in our elementary during march is reading month, an ice cream social for our community’s Fourth of July festival, Christmas cookie decorating during our towns Christmas in the village celebration, and a hand washing day in the early elementary to teach hygiene and how to keep our bodies healthy.

What have you learned about yourself in the process?
I have learned that I’m not always the best at delegating responsibilities. It often seems easier to do things without asking for help, but that isn’t necessarily the most efficient way to get things done. There are always parts of ourselves that we need to work on and delegating is one of my focuses this year.

How did you find and why did you choose Melonie Marie Photography for your photographer?
I have known Melonie since I was a little girl. Her kids went to elementary school when I did and in the same school that I did. She took pictures of me and my family from a young age. She always makes me feel comfortable and like I can be myself but at the same time step out of my comfort zone.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was such an amazing day. It was like being with a friend and having fun, but she also taught me things as we went throughout the day. Little tips about being in photos that I might not have otherwise thought about.

What does your mental health committee do to help others?
My school's mental health committee is just starting up this year, so far we have left encouraging notes to all students, but we have more ideas in order to incorporate more positivity throughout our school and teach coping mechanisms to all students to help with anxiety and stress, both during and outside of school.

What do you think is the biggest mental health issue among your peers and what is a solution that would help?
I think that anxiety has become a huge issue among my peers because of our easy access to social media. This causes a lot of comparison. It can lead us to believe our lives need to be perfect all the time and when they aren’t, it triggers stress and anxiety.

Tell us more about the impact yoga can have on your well being.
Yoga has many benefits. It helps decrease stress, anxiety, and depression, and can also have positive impacts on your physical health, like boosting your immune system.

What is something about yoga that people who don't do yoga may not realize?
I think that something a lot of people wouldn’t know about yoga is that it works all parts of your body. It encourages mental and physical connection in a way that alleviates stress and anxiety while also getting a full body workout in.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am able to take dual enrollment courses through my local community college thanks to the outstanding guidance department at Gatlinburg-Pittman. I have maintained a 4.0 college GPA and have completed 27 credit hours so far. I plan to have a total of at least 39 credit hours secured by graduation this upcoming May. I was officially inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society through Walters State Community College during the fall semester of my senior year after completing nine credit hours during the 2022 summer.

What is your daily/weekly schedule like with dual enrollment?
Typically it depends on the amount of classes I have in my schedule. The spring semester of my senior year will be composed of four dual enrollment courses along with a high school class- Marketing and Management. For dual enrollment courses I have class Monday through Thursday, but continue to work on assignments even when there are no class meetings.

What class is your favorite and why?
I have always loved science and always will. I have always excelled in any science class I have taken, and I enjoy the always changing information. Chemistry is by far my favorite science class and I was able to take Honors Chemistry I & II in high school.
Out of the dual enrollment courses I have taken, probably Modern US History because I enjoy learning about our country. I find it more as a review to me because I have had phenomenal history teachers and professors who have really engraved a lot of the information into my brain.

How did you find and why did you choose Rural Southern for your photographer?
When I was a sophomore, my teammate was a senior and used Rural Southern for her senior photos. When she posted a Senior Sunday I immediately fell in love with everything about them and began to follow Rural Southern. I knew then that I wanted Kasey to take my senior photos when I was a senior.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
It was more than I could have imagined. It wasn't crazy and overwhelming like I thought senior photos were, instead, Kasey offered me both a fun and calm senior session. I loved how I was able to take photos at both a flower garden and my school’s campus. It was literally my dream session! I also loved how Kasey made me feel. She was super sweet and always knew how to get a good laugh out of me.

What will you miss most about your senior year/class?
I will definitely miss the people. My senior class is full of outgoing people that have made my high school experience fun. My close friends have shaped me into who I am today and I cannot imagine life without them. I can never thank God enough for giving me these people to share my high school experience with. They are the reason I want to come to school everyday.

Tell us about your golf career. Where did you start and where are you at with it now?

It isn't at all what I expected it to be. I started in late June 2019 when I had to choose between golf and soccer before my freshman year. I chose golf even though I actually strongly disliked it at the time. I wasn't any good; I was just doing it because I basically had to. I began to fall in love with the game until it was all I was doing. I am currently in the position where I can play golf at the collegiate level but I’m letting God guide the way for me.

What is your golf team like and what is a favorite memory with them?
Funny but also wild to say the least. My favorite memory is probably one from my junior year. My coach and myself along with two other teammates took a field trip day to play a round of golf a week before the big regional tournament that determined if we would go to state or not. Our coach took us to breakfast and drove us over two hours away to the Elizabethton Golf Course. I will always remember that day.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have volunteered on the Pathways Church Production Team since the sixth grade. Church has always been a big part of my life so being able to volunteer at my church is very near and dear to my heart. I have accumulated approximately 700 hours volunteering at church. I have accumulated these hours working services, both our normal service times and our youth group services, set up and tear down of the stage, and various other activities. I am so thankful for the Production Team that has also given me a second family that I can always count on.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present my faith to a group of peers. I am in no way perfect but through Jesus Christ I am perfect to Him. I am redeemed and forgiven by His grace that has set me free. I would share how He has shaped me into the person I am today and how He can do the same for them. I could talk for hours about Jesus and what He has done for me. I would want my peers to hear what He has done for me and through me and how He can do the same for them.

What do you want people to know most about Jesus?
I want people to know most that Jesus is so forgiving. Even if you have messed up or chose the wrong decisions, God will forgive you for them as long as you talk to him and confess what you've done wrong. I'm not perfect and I haven't made the correct choices all my life, but I've talked to God and confessed my sins and he has forgiven me for them and he can do the same for you!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I see myself either in grad school for engineering or dental school for dentistry. I have yet to fully decide on what career path I will take but it will be either of these two options.

3 Things on your bucket list
I would love to travel to Italy, intern at NASA, and see the northern lights. Those are probably the top 3 on my list.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Thank you so much for this opportunity!

Nomination: Olivia Thompson is inspiring because of her work ethic and dedication. Olivia is energetic with a huge heart and is very involved in her school. Olivia has a passion for dance and animals. She keeps up with so much as a senior in high school and does amazing. She has faced many challenges in her life and continues to strive for better. What dances do you study and which is your favorite? Why?
I study pointe, jazz, hip hop and contemporary styles of dance at Kentucky Dance Academy. I truly enjoy them all, but contemporary dance would be my favorite. Contemporary dance allows me to express myself and relay feeling through dance and the music. I have been impacted greatly through dance and to be able to use it as a tool, an art, to express myself is a gift.

If you could be on any dance tv show, which one would it be, what would you wear, dance to, etc.?
Probably “World Of Dance” because I literally love J Lo and Derek Hough like no other and because the caliber of the competition is so breathtaking and I absolutely love every contestant that partakes.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
I got invited to the Joffrey Ballet summer intensives at 20 different locations internationally and winning a talent award in the Distinguished Young Women’s scholarship opportunity. It was an honor to receive that award because there was such an amazing group of talented young ladies competing with me for that title.

What is it you love about animals? Do you have a favorite?
I have always had a passion for animals. We have had dogs and cats in my family since I was young. My school also has a wonderful FFA program with various animals to care for and learn about.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.
In my home we have two dogs and four cats. The dogs are Luna and Poppy and the cats are Zazzles, Cocoa, Layla and my newest addition Cowboy. The animals have such different personalities just like people but they give absolute unconditional love. It feels like they know when you aren’t feeling yourself (sad, mad, sick, scared). Cowboy is my kitten that I adopted from the local humane society and I am learning so much about him and caring for him. He and the other animals are warming up to each other quickly.

What do you do in the local veterinary office? Do you plan on a career in pets?
I am currently doing a co-op for my senior year of high school at the veterinary office. I am also taking pre-veterinary dual credit classes at school. I want to be a veterinarian so this has been a great hands-on experience for me. I do many different jobs at the veterinary office. You learn that while not all of the duties at the office are seen they are all important in caring for the animals.

How did you find and why did you choose Jim Tincher Photography for your photographer?
I have friends that worked with Jim Tincher in the past and really liked the different types of photos that he shoots. He is local to where I am and each year he has a group of Senior Models. It’s been a great experience and I will absolutely have some photos that will be amazing keepsakes of this year.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
He’s such a great and funny guy and the other ladies I model with are the best kind of people, they’re sensitive, and sweet, and so funny that it’s unreal. This modeling opportunity has brought me so many amazing opportunities, such as this.

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My platform of eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorders awareness.
I am also Miss Franklin County High School.

Tell us about your rise to Miss Franklin County High School.
This was my third year participating in the Miss Franklin County High School pageant. I participated my Freshman year and was chosen as first runner up. There was no pageant (or in person school) my Sophomore year due to COVID. I was a participant last year, my junior year and received the first runner up title again. I was determined to participate this year, as a senior and was crowned Miss Franklin County High School. The pageant really brings you closer together with so many classmates at my high school and between rehearsals and the actual pageant we spend a lot of time together. It is really a great atmosphere and a fun time.

What did you need to do to obtain this title and what are your roles and responsibilities?
You set the standards and expectations for other students within the school. You have to be the image of school spirit, which is an image I strive to uphold, and you get amazing opportunities in the community and throughout the school system.

Why did you choose eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorders awareness for your platforms and what do you want people to know about them?
My reason for choosing my platform is because I have learned first-hand about them from my own life experiences. It can be scary, lonely, and most people do not see it or understand it. Eating disorders are more predominant than I feel people realize. Body dysmorphia is also a difficult thing to work through when you see yourself differently than others see you. By bringing awareness and understanding to these issues I feel more people will benefit and not feel as scared or alone.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?

The way society today can affect young girls' mental health in terms of beauty standards. The media, predominately social media, can present a false sense of reality. The unattainable standards that we feel we should reach or be like. Young girls need to be able to understand that beauty isn’t up to society. Social media can be extremely deceiving and leave many with struggles and insecurities.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Probably the ability to know that I don’t need someone else’s approval to be successful in my own eyes, and that I am a capable and independent young woman. I think it’s a valuable lesson for any teenager, especially now. This came from many years of family struggles, body image issues, and an undying need for athletic validation, but then everyday it became a little more clear to me that not everyone is going to like what you do, or how you are, but at the end of the day all you need is to be yourself, having supportive friends and family and coaches is just a perk of knowing that.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t worry about the person next to you, because I promise they don’t have it all together either, just breathe.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I see myself in school for Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University and possibly dancing for a professional sports team.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love shopping with my friends or just hanging out at the studio by myself, being able to feel the music and express built up emotions and get a “release”.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is that I am self-taught on the Ukulele. I wanted one for Christmas one year and didn’t know the first thing about it but it is amazing how fun it is and what you can learn when you are determined.

3 Things on your bucket list?
go skydiving (even though I’m terrified of heights)
travel or study abroad in Italy
shake a female US president’s hand

Who do you find inspiring?
My friends, my family, but most of all my sister.
A while ago, about 2 or so years, she decided she wanted to take her own life. So she tried, but was not successful. But, since then, she has shown me what it can really look like to fall back in love with living again. I strive to have her successes, and her aspirations and goals. I love my sister, and she has been the biggest inspiration to me, even if it seems like a sob story to somebody else.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I’ve had comebacks from illnesses, injuries, mental health problems, and family matters. I would like to think of myself as somebody anyone could look at and think, “If she had the same problem as me and made it this far, I can too.”

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Thank you for this opportunity and for taking the time to get to know me through this experience.

Nomination: Sophia Ellig was born with a rare genetic condition called PKU. She is unable to process Phenylalanine, an amino acid found in protein. She cannot eat dairy, meat, chicken, fish or anything with high levels of protein. Sophia starts everyday by drinking a metabolic formula so her body and brain can grow normally. Tell us about your dance career.
Dancing is my life, it is my passion. I have been dancing since I was two years old. I saw my sister dancing and I knew that's what I wanted to do. I currently dance on a company dance team, The Right Combination Dance Studio. I have been at the same studio since I was three. I attend various dance competitions and conventions throughout the year. Conventions are my favorite.

What types of dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
I love all styles of dance. My favorites are jazz, contemporary and hip hop because I can just listen to the music and I dance my heart out. I can disappear in my dance world. I am very proud and grateful for my dance scholarships. I hope to one day be a great performer and teacher. I also love to model and hope to be successful in both dance and modeling.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
I am very proud of our dance studio for being the 2022 Winners Judges' Choice Award for Best Showmanship for our Performance "Saved By The Bell". It was a fantastic experience. I am also very proud of the dance scholarships I have received and I hope to accomplish much more in the future..

What is your favorite dance performance you participated in and why?
I have so many dances I have loved but my favorite so far was a trio called Charlie's Angles by Destiny's Child. I performed this jazz trio with my 2 best friends. We wore a black bralette from Tiger Friday called Take the Plunge in Onyx with red gloves and it rocked!

Picture
Photography by Rob Harper / Harper Digital Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Harper Digital Photography for your photographer?
I am a huge Tiger Friday dancewear fan. I love the way it fits, the comfort and the way it makes me feel. Their motto is Fierce and Free and that is exactly how I feel when I wear this dancewear.

I saw an Instagram a post that Robert Harper of Harper Digital Imaging was coming to my area for a Talent Club Call to photograph dancers wearing Tiger Friday dancewear. I immediately begged my mom to allow me to apply. When Rob Harper selected me for the shoot, I was thrilled. I was nervous but Mr. Harper was so professional and amazing and made me feel great in front of the camera. His photographs are beyond fantastic. I have photographed with him a couple of times and can't wait for him to return in the spring. I loved the experience and hope to have the opportunity to continue to model and hopefully one day professionally.
Thank you Mr. Harper! Can't wait for the Spring.

What else would you like to talk about?
I was born in China with a rare genetic disorder called PKU. I lived in a hospital in Beijing China until I was adopted at 13 months old. I do not remember any of China, but my earliest memories are being separated from the other kids who could eat regular food. I have struggled having a different diet, but I refuse to let it own me. My friends and family are very supportive and amazing and never make me feel any less of a person.

What do you wish people knew about PKU and how it affects you personally?
PKU is very rare. Only 1 about 18,000 newborns have it. Thankfully, my doctors knew I had it from birth. Sometimes, if my blood levels are off, I have a hard time concentrating and get headaches. But it is really just a different diet. The hardest part is going to dinner and finding something I can eat. So, I just bring my own food. I do love fries, mashed potatoes and my special Quesadillas.

Picture

Tell us about your family.
I am the youngest in my family. Well, my dog Dunkin' is the youngest. My sister and I were both adopted when we were still babies. We love Disney and Dunkin' Donuts.

What is a favorite memory with your family?
When we went to Vermont and went on the Ninja Warriors course.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
Shopping with my Papa at the mall for Christmas.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would talk about the obstacles everyone has in life and how to overcome them. I wake up every morning like everyone else. I might eat a different kind of breakfast and drink a different kind of milk, but that does not define me. I do not feel I am different, I just go with the flow and don't look back.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Doing a solo for the first time.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up. Know there are good days and bad day, but the good always outweigh the bad.

Photography by Katelyn Masters Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Katelyn Masters Photography for your senior photographer?
I found Katelyn on social media and applied for her senior spokesmodel team. I chose to continue with Katelyn because I absolutely loved all of her work!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My entire experience with Katelyn has been incredible! She has become such a friend and mentor to me over the last few months. My fall senior session took place at my high school, our downtown area, and a field and Katelyn made me feel confident and made me laugh the whole time! There is never a dull moment when she is around!

What does it mean to be part of her team & what is a favorite memory from being on it?
Being a part of the KMP Senior Team has been the absolute highlight of my senior year! I have made so many incredible friends and am truly thankful for all the memories we have made together! My favorite memory would have to be when we went to Huntsville for a photo shoot. We shot at a beautiful church in the historic area and had lunch after we finished the shoot. We went to the outdoor mall where we shopped and saw the Minions movie! It was so much fun and I’ll never forget that day.

What are you loving most about your senior year so far?
I have loved getting to be surrounded with so many inspiring people while so many lasts are happening for us all. My friends inspire me so much, so being surrounded by so many of them for our last band performance was definitely a memorable experience. And of course, the teachers that have guided us and inspired us make this year special!

Picture
Photography by Katelyn Masters Photography

What are you most excited for coming up before graduation?
I have a few things I am looking forward to before graduation! We are doing a KMP Senior Team destination shoot, I’ll attend my last State Leadership Conference for FBLA, and I have two concerts I’m going to— Taylor Swift exactly two weeks before graduation and Sabrina Carpenter two days before!

What was the State Leadership Conference like and what did you learn about yourself there?
State Leadership Conference is a surreal experience! FBLA members from across the state attend this conference to build and expand their leadership skills, compete in their competitive event, and to represent their chapter and school. I have only attended SLC once in person as my freshman and sophomore years were held virtually, but I have learned that I am not as shy as I thought I was! You are given the opportunity to network with so many people and I have loved getting to do this on a local and state level as an officer for my chapter!

Picture
Photography by Katelyn Masters Photography

What was your topic for FBLA and why was it important to you?
I have competed in Journalism, Advertising, and Business Communications at SLC! I placed and qualified for Nationals in both Journalism and Advertising. These were all test events, so this year I am pushing myself and will be presenting at conference! All of the events I have competed in spoke to me as potential careers, so I chose those events to gain a better idea of what to expect if I chose a career in a related field. I love that FBLA has a broad selection of competitive events to choose from and that there is truly something for everyone in many different fields!

What type of marketing are you hoping to get into? What is your ideal job?
I would love to go into a form of social media marketing! I love graphic design and managing social media pages, so being able to pursue a career that involved both would be my dream!

Tell us about your love for horses. When did it start and how?

My love for horses began at a very young age, for as long as I remember I have always had a love for their beauty and strength.

What do you love doing with horses the most?
I love working with the rescue horses that are most misunderstood, in the round pen that is at my neighbor’s house. Watching them gain trust after being so extremely abused feels my heart with so much joy.

What is something about horses that people who aren't around horses may not know or understand?
Horses feel every single thing that you are feeling, they are a mirror of your emotions.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment with your rescues?
My favorite accomplishment so far with my horses has to be finding the most wild horses that I can find, showing them to trust people again almost like big giant puppy dogs.

How did you find and why did you choose Mark H Herron PhotoArtistry for your photographer?
I chose Mark Herron as the photographer for my senior pictures because of the love that he has for nature, and he can see the most beautiful pictures/art in the most common scenery or sites.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I have never been confident in my own skin but when working with Mark, he encouraged me and made me feel absolutely gorgeous and made sure I was comfortable the entire photo session. He encouraged me and was creative and made the session fun.

Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My love for horses and helping them live their last days knowing they are loved and cared for and no worries is a passion I will always carry. Through God he gives me strength in my weakest moments.

Tell us about your church and what you love about it.
The church I attend is a small, little church out in the country. I love my church is like one big family who all share a love for the Lord.

What has your favorite musical been and what part did you play? Why was this your favorite?
My favorite musical that I participated in was “Into the Woods, Jr.”. I played the witch and was able to be the character with the most dynamic personality.

What else would you like to talk about?
I also enjoy singing, acting, and working with youth teaching them about horses. I plan to become a certified farrier.

What genre of music do you like to sing the most? Do you have a favorite go-to song and if so, what is it?
My favorite genre of music to sing is country. My favorite go-to song is “The Good I’ll Do” by Zach Bryan. At church I love to sing, “Waymaker” by Sinach because it speaks of how God is always with us present and by our side.

What do you love most about acting?
My favorite thing about acting is that I get to crest my own interpretation of the character for who I am casted.

If you could have been an actress in any movie already out, which one would it be and who would you play? Why?
If I were an actress in any movie already out, it would be Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” because I think it would be extremely cool as well as an honor to play the part of a small child with such a strong love for singing and the Lord!

Picture
Photography by Mark H Herron PhotoArtistry

What is a certified farrier and what does certification entail?
A certified farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care, including trimming and balancing of horses’ hooves and the placing of shoes on their hooves if they are needed.
The school I plan to attend is a 36 week course that teaches how to measure, shape and make the shoes to accommodate the horses hooves. I will be learning to make the shoe from a piece of metal. I will learn to weld, cut, trim, apply shoes. Following completion of the 36 week course, I will take a test to obtain my certification.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Horse rescue, what the rescue I work with actually does, the goals of the rescue, and what it means to me to be a part of it.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished (or had to experience) is recently I held my grandfather’s hand as he passed away peacefully with his family around him. I honestly do not know how I did it except that God gave me strength to be there with my Papa and make sure that he knew how much I love him.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Always be true to yourself and who you are while demonstrating a willingness to work hard and stand up for your beliefs and values.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I stand strong in my faith in the Lord. I have been told that my faith is displayed in my behaviors and actions.

Madison Shelton

1/10/2023

Picture

Madison Shelton – Tennessee
Nomination by Jessica Shelton
Photography by Michael Scott Evans Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madison Shelton is inspiring because she challenges the norm and does not settle for mediocrity. She has struggled with undiagnosed ADHD for most of her life. As a student at a magnet school, she has been pushed aside because she didn’t fit the mold. Teachers dismissed her as they thought she was just being lazy. This past year, she advocated for herself and requested to work with a cognitive learning center to help her prepare for college. She now is an advocate for those at her school who may be slipping through the cracks because of learning disabilities and high anxiety.

Picture
Photography by Michael Scott Evans Photography
What do you wish people understood about ADHD?
One thing I wish others understood about ADHD is that it comes with a full package. When I say a full package, I mean it is genuinely hard to focus for long periods of time, hard to sit still, hard to not zone out. It for sure takes a lot of patience when dealing with students who struggle with ADHD. Lots of repetition is needed, as well as interactive activities and spark of interest. If these tactics are used in the right way, it makes learning a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable.

How have you transitioned with the cognitive learning center?
Working with the Cognitive Emporium Center helped me in ways I can’t even begin to explain. At first it began with simple quizzes that helped me understand what I struggled with and what aspects of learning I didn’t connect with. Over the next few months, I was taking online zoom classes with an instructor who helped me with mind-sharpening and memory skills. After a few months I began to see a drastic improvement in my work ethic as well as my focus in class. It’s safe to say I came a long way with my learning!

How do you advocate for others at your school?
Those who know me know that I have a strong-willed personality that has been with me from the start. If others are struggling with something, I will be the first to make sure they have someone to listen to them. If someone is upset with how someone else treated them, I will be the one to stick up and speak the words they are too nervous to say. I will never back away from an opportunity to be an advocate for others and be a voice they are too afraid to be for themselves.

Tell us about your basketball career. When did you start and where are you at with it now?
My basketball career began in 5th grade. I played in a small league that I had a blast playing in. My next step was middle school ball, which was an extremely different environment from church league, but nothing I couldn’t handle. Playing basketball quickly became so natural for me. I’ve played from 5th grade to 12th grade, now on my last season of basketball that I will ever play. While it is bittersweet to come to the end of a sport I have loved my whole life, I am grateful for the friendships and lessons that have stemmed from it.

What do you love most about your team and what is a favorite memory with them?
The thing I love most about my team is that they truly are my family. The bond I share with my teammates is more than a friendship, for we see the raw emotions in each other not only on the court but off the court as well. We share so much with each other to where we are all comfortable enough to be ourselves and fully trust one another, which is what makes the bond with them so strong. Honestly I couldn’t name a specific favorite memory, I cherish every second I spend with them.

How did you find and why did you choose Michael Scott Evans Photography for your senior photographer?
Scott Evans has been a family friend of ours for quite some time now. We have watched him grow as a person and as a photographer, to where he is now one of Nashville’s top photographers, shooting covers for Journey’s shoe catalog. Scott Evans has always had unique ideas that captivated my interest in photography, and he executed those ideas perfectly when he took my senior pictures.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was a BLAST! Scott Evans took me to an abandoned gymnasium to give it a retro feel in which he set up different angles of light to truly capture some amazing photos. I loved the authenticity of the photos and how they truly encapsulated my personality.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
It would honestly depend on the day as my interests change monthly, sometimes weekly. I am constantly developing new interests and new hobbies, because I am always eager to try new things. However, if I could narrow it down, I would be in a coffee shop with a friend having a great conversation. I will always love to just sit and talk with a good friend.

Tell us more about the Nashville Rescue Mission. What is it and what is its main function?
The Nashville Rescue Mission is a place where the homeless can come and find rest, a hot meal, and a place to stay and find fellowship. Its main function is to help the homeless community and give them the necessities they need while also getting to know and understand their situations.

How did you get involved and what do you do for/with it?
I got involved after I went with a team from CrossFit a few years back. We get up at about 4 A.M. to get in and prepare and serve breakfast for men, women, and children. Ever since then, I developed a love for service and have taken my athletic teams there and different groups of friends so that hopefully they can share the same love I do.

What have you learned about working with others at Hendersonville Produce?
By working with others at Hendersonville Produce, I have learned to keep patience and show kindness to everyone no matter the circumstances. You truly never know what someone is going through and by taking your frustrations out on them is doing way more harm than good. Working with others has allowed me to have great conversations with anyone, especially strangers, and provided me with different perspectives.

What have you learned about yourself from refereeing basketball games?
Reffing basketball has taught me similar skills as those from working at Hendersonville Produce. Patience is again, probably one of the hardest things I’ve had to learn, especially with all ages varying from 6 year old players to 50 year old parents and coaches. Having to be silent when you have upset parents yelling at you because of a disagreement over a call takes more patience than I would've ever been prepared for.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. How do you stand out?
In my family, I have always been known as the athlete and the opinionated one. I have never been afraid to speak my mind, and over time I have learned to control my tongue and to know when is the right time to speak. My parents have always taught me to work hard for what I want and to have integrity. I have been blessed with amazing parents who have grown me in knowledge and wisdom and a sister who has supported me the whole way through. Life is not easy, but they make it a lot less difficult.

When will your mission trip be and what are you most looking forward to doing there?
My mission trip, as of now, is going to be in Northern England in the beginning of July 2023. I am extremely excited, as this will be my first mission trip, and I am looking forward to the evangelical side of this trip. Less than 7% of Europe knows Christ and by going out there in July, I get to spread the Gospel to others and inform them just how great the gift of salvation truly is. Everyone needs Jesus and knowing him is simply life-changing, and I want Europe to understand that.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I am about to finish high school, and let me tell you it has not been an easy journey. I could never have done it without my family, friends, and supportive teachers along the way.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Don’t let anybody steer you from what you truly believe. If you don’t stand for anything, you will fall for anything, so keep your beliefs and morals in the front of your mind.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Following a path in life that I may hold genuine joy, as well as helping others along the way.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
This past year I have developed a love for reading again. I encourage everyone to pick up a book and just give it a try, for it could change your life for the better.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Growing up an athlete my whole life, people tend to look over this talent of mine, but I am a decent artist as well. They look over the sports side of me and don’t know that I also have talent in art.

3 Things on your bucket list
Have twins, go skydiving, and travel to Scotland.

Who do you find inspiring?
Candace Owens. She is a very knowledgeable woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to speak her mind.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I have the ability to speak up where others are too shy to share their opinions. I think this is an inspiring quality as many lack that tendency.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
This upcoming year I am also hoping to learn piano as well as learn more of the French language.

Sienna Ni

Picture

Sienna Ni – Maryland
Nomination & Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sienna Ni has an inner strength that never ceases to amaze me. Although she struggles with an overwhelming anxiety disorder, she has learned healthy ways to manage her stress and improve her quality of life. While anxiety often affects one’s self-confidence, participating in Erica Land Photography’s Project Beauty taught Sienna to accept and trust herself. Project Beauty gave Sienna the courage and confidence to ask for help, to share with others how she feels, and to ultimately learn what true beauty really is.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
As part of Erica Land Photography's Teen Ambassador program, I participate in monthly volunteer activities for organizations in our area. Our team attended CureFest in DC and held a fashion show to raise awareness for childhood cancer. I also led a baby clothes drive and backpack drive for families in need, and I hosted a Hope Totes Packing Party where we filled drawstring bags with basic necessities for those experiencing homelessness in our community.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about the importance of bringing awareness to teens who suffer from anxiety, as well as the strategies used to manage it. I'd also love to talk about my high school Poms team!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present strategies to manage anxiety. I feel it's important for teens to know they are not alone, and there are coping strategies and resiliency skills that can help them find relief and live a mentally healthy life!

Paige Vetter – Colorado
Nomination & Photography by Kathlene Woltemath Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Paige Noel Vetter is a light. She radiates a fiery brilliance both intellectually and with her resilient spirit. When faced with adversity Paige continues to show up. She is an example of what it means to be present and dedicated in every aspect of her life. She is inspiring for the beauty and grace with which she begins each day. To those who know her, she is witty, radiant and wise. Paige is not inspiring because of all that she has already accomplished in her short life, but by the way her determination and character set each new day ablaze.  - Ashley Daniel - Mom

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Overall, I try my best each day to demonstrate leadership and improvement throughout different aspects of my life. Whether I’m practicing this in an educational environment, my work, home, or any other athletics and activities I am involved in at the time.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would just like to recognize how exciting this unexpected nomination and opportunity has been, and i’m very grateful for it.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I’m very passionate about women’s rights. I feel like this is a subject that is currently a hot topic in society, so I would definitely love to talk for hours on the subject, especially with my peers!

Makayla Guilbeau

Picture

Makayla Guilbeau – Florida
Nomination by Sara Denmon
Photography by Crowned Collective Studios
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Makayla Guilbeau is a dedicated and self-motivated individual. She is “Miss Gulf Breeze Florida,” and was selected to compete in the Teen Miss Florida USA pageant in May 2023. She serves on the teen board of directors for Magdalene’s, LLC, a nonprofit corporation established for the purpose of helping women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, abuse and addiction. Makayla has volunteered hundreds of hours to the Gulf Breeze Sports Association training children in cheerleading and lacrosse. She serves as varsity cheer captain. Makayla has earned the status of top 10% of her class while maintaining a rigorous course load of subjects.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover how much time is spent doing each thing I do. I spend countless hours each week at cheer practices and games, studying, and volunteering while providing leadership. Balancing all these things is not easy, but it is worth it in the end. Currently, I am balancing these things while maintaining a 4.7 gpa, going to various volunteer events, and working with Magdalene's, LLC.

What else would you like to talk about?
In my interview, I would love to talk about the volunteer work I do. I love cheerleading and have spent hundreds of hours with young cheerleaders by coaching them. I love seeing the girls have the same love for cheerleading that I do. I have grown up cheering in the same organization so it's neat to come full circle. I also volunteer my time with a nonprofit that supports women who have experienced sexual abuse and helps them to get back on their feet.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
If I were to present a topic it would be sexual abuse and trafficking awareness. I want people to understand the severity of the issue and to create awareness of the issue. Sexual abuse and trafficking are real issues that happen in our own communities, more than a lot of people realize, and spreading awareness is extremely important.

Lily Paul

Picture

Lily Paul – Indiana
Nomination by Stephanie Paul
Photography by Lisa Cox Photography LLC
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lily Paul is a tenth grade honor student and JV cheerleader. Her passion is dance, and she dances competitively at The Dance Refinery competing in eleven dances. She dances fifteen plus hours per week at her studio. Lily’s self-discipline and dedication to dance is inspiring to all who know her. She motivates her friends and younger students that she assists at her dance studio by setting an example of hard work, commitment, positive attitude, and always trying her best. She has a goal of attending college, majoring in psychology, and participating in a collegiate dance team.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I feel I am also inspiring because I can show others that working through your fears and staying committed to your goals allows you to accomplish anything you want. I seek out opportunities to improve myself as much as I can. For example, I have attended extra conventions and collegiate dance clinics to improve my technique. Following your passion often means you have to make tough choices, like missing out on fun things with your friends and family, but achieving your goals can be so worth it.

What else would you like to talk about?
I’ve always loved working with younger kids, but my assistant job at my dance studio has solidified my desire to mentor children. I know what a critical role strong mentors play in a child’s development. They look up to you and it’s important to lead by example. I can’t expect a student to work hard if they don’t see me working hard myself. I feel passionate about serving in this role because I personally had strong mentors that helped shape me into the strong, disciplined, and happy person I am today.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would want to talk to my peers about the importance of finding your passion. My love and participation in dance has allowed me to express myself on the stage, learn to be organized and self-disciplined, form meaningful relationships with adult mentors, friends, and younger students, as well as be a mentor to young students. Most importantly, my passion for dance had kept me focused on my goals and has been support for me. Having something you are passionate about, whatever it is, can keep you motivated, focused, and out of trouble. I want to encourage everyone to find their passion like I did with dance.

Nomination: Layla is passionate about flag football. I could tell the moment she put her uniform on she was in her element. Last year was the inaugural year for flag football at her school so she was on the first team ever. She is also a peer facilitator at her school and she works with the kids with special needs. She’s an AB student and works part time.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have really enjoyed working with peers with special needs. I have the opportunity to watch them progress every day and be part of that experience. Seeing life through their eyes is something I’m so grateful for. I’ve been so inspired by working with my peers I’ve decided to pursue an education in a field supporting individuals with special needs.

What else would you like to talk about?
My family and culture are very important to me. My Grandmother is Japanese, and I love learning about and participating in Japanese traditions.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
One of the things that I’m most passionate about is flag football. I love absolutely everything about the sport. From playing offensive and defensive positions to standing on the sideline and cheering on my teammates. I’ve been forming new friendships with teammates and learning from my coaches. I’ve been successful in the sport due to consistently attending practices and camps whenever they’re offered. Football has given me a new level of confidence. It relieves stress and it provides a fun way to stay healthy. I have had so many exciting experiences playing football, including playing at events hosted by the Arizona Cardinals and being interviewed by local news stations. Thank you, flag football.

Lauren Pye – Georgia
Nomination & Photography by Ride the Sky Equine Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lauren Pye is a high school senior, who enjoys horseback, riding, musical theater, dance, and marching band. Shortly before her junior year began, Lauren was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). This condition made it difficult to do the activities she loves and took a toll on her mental health. However, Lauren has persevered and continues to show how having a disability doesn’t need to define who you are. Lauren was recently cast as the lead in her school spring musical. In the fall of 2023, Lauren will be attending SCAD to study film acting.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In addition to Lauren’s physical disability, she also struggles with mental illness such as anxiety and depression. This made it difficult for her to attend school and remain active. However, Lauren joined a mental health group that helped her learn coping strategies that helped pull her out of the worst of her depression and allow her to continue doing the things she loves.

What else would you like to talk about?
I could elaborate on struggles with social anxiety, loneliness, marching band, horse riding, musical theater.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?

Ellie Regnell

Picture

Ellie Regnell – Maryland
Nomination & Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ellie is a kind, empathetic girl who has a strong passion to help others. She uses this passion every day at her internship as a kindergarten teacher’s assistant. In this internship she has learned the values of respecting how a child learns and how each one is extremely different. Ellie also works at the expressive therapy center every Sunday helping teach children to how manage their anxiety and learn how to improve their social skills. With her passion, she has helped inspired the kids she works with and has helped boost their self-esteem, while encouraging them that they are enough.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My passion for promoting self-esteem hacks, school doesn’t define you, and it’s ok to prioritize yourself over others sometimes

What else would you like to talk about?
- the importance of educating children young emotionally
- how your grades do not define you and your intelligence
- how important mental health days are
- learning how to be kind to yourself be your own best friend

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I could talk about the importance of emotional intelligence rather than school intelligence. I strongly believe our school system is corrupted causing lack of self-esteem among children everywhere. I work with kindergartners, and I see it every day. Becoming more aware of your emotions is much more important than knowing your times tables.
