What would you most like to be interviewed about?
What I would most want to be interviewed about is being a child to someone in the Military. My dad has been serving in the Air Force for over 18 years now, and is still currently active. No one really talks about the struggle of having a family member serving. One of the hardest things is moving. Saying goodbye to old friends and going into a new school to make new ones. One thing that you should definitely know about me is how I have had to adapt to these situations. Coming into a new school where others have known each other since kindergarten is hard. However, this has made me grow as an individual and has made me stronger. I am thankful that I am able to say I have lifelong friends in multiple states because of this.

What tips would you give to teens struggling through the move? What has helped you?
The tips I would give to struggling teens going through the moving process is not being afraid to stand out. Many of us worry about what others will think, it is best to let who you really are show through, and the individuals who really accept that are your friends. Some things that have helped me while going through a move is knowing how many new people I will meet and the many new relationships and memories I will create.

Where have you gotten to live as a military child?
All the places I have lived are Alaska, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Arkansas.

What has made you most proud of your circumstances?
What has made me most proud of my circumstances is that I have always made the best out of a new move. Even though it is hard I have always thought to myself all the people I will meet and the lives I will impact!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One inspiring thing that my nomination does not cover is playing a sport with an injury. For 6 years now I have been dealing with a chronic back injury. I have had countless MRIs, steroid injections, physical therapy appointments, and two nerve ablations, and through all that nothing has helped. Even through all this I still decide to push through the pain to play my favorite sport, softball. In doing so I hope I inspire others that injuries do not have to define them, and they can accomplish anything they want. I hope I inspire others that may be going through something similar and to push through and not give up. My injury has inspired me to enter the medical field.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers it would be about being respectful to one another, despite what someone else's opinion may be. I would present this topic because today many things revolve around politics, but most individuals cannot respect one's opinion surrounding that. Even individuals my age will turn their shoulders to someone they have known forever. I feel it is very important for us to respect others' opinions and that people's opinions should not affect how we treat one another.

What was your photo shoot like with Kristina Eisenhower Photography and what did you love most about it?
The photo shoot with Kristina was amazing. We went to many different locations and worked with a few props. She had me getting out of my comfort zone and made me feel so confident. What I loved the most about the shoot was Kristina's energy. She makes me feel like a rockstar out there!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I will be finishing up my senior year in college. I want to pursue a career in Radiation Therapy. I would like to focus that career more toward children who are diagnosed with cancer.

Picture
Photography by Haileigh Garriga

Tell us about your softball career. When did you get started, what position/s you play and what you love most about it.
I first started playing softball when I was 7 years old, and I have played it ever since. Of course I have played other sports in between, but softball is the one I have loved all my life. One of the positions I play is the pitcher. I have been pitching since I was 9 years old. What I love about pitching is that I am in control of the game. The other position I play is left field. What I love about playing there is being the last known defense for the ball and also getting to make diving plays.

What is a favorite memory you've had in softball?
My favorite memory that I have had in softball in winning the 2019 6a State Championship.
What advice would you give to other recovering athletes?
The advice I would give to recovering athletes is to never be discouraged during an injury, just know you will always come back better and stronger than before.

Lauren Allen - Arkansas
Nomination and Photography by Photography by Melisa
Issue 49 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lauren Allen is an amazing young woman. She spends weekends and free time volunteering with her church through an outreach program, by mentoring under privileged youths and helps serve dinners to cancer patients and care givers at a local nonprofit lodge. All while keeping her grade point above a 4.0 and plays soccer and volleyball.

Photography by Photography by Melisa

What else should we know about you?
I love to spend a lot of my time doing volunteer work for different organizations. For over 2 years now, I have been working with an outreach program through my church where I spend time with little kids and families in an underprivileged area of Little Rock. I love getting to play with the kids and teach them more about God while doing so.

What is your favorite thing to do with the kids?
I really enjoy painting the little girls’ nails and playing football with the boys. I also love getting to teach them about the Lord and see them start to get to know God more and more.

What is a favorite memory from working with this outreach program?
I will always remember this one little girl named Myla who was there my very first-day volunteering. We quickly hit it off and became friends and she decided to give me her mom’s phone number so that she could reach me whenever she wanted. One day I was doing homework at my house, and I got a call from a random number and thankfully I decided to answer it. It was Myla calling to ask what I was doing and to tell me that she missed me so much. This made me realize just how important I was to these little kids because they saw me as a best friend and someone that would always take care of them.

What was your portrait experience like with Photography by Melisa and what was one thing you'll always remember from it?
My experiences with Melisa have always been wonderful. She is a kind, hard-working, and very talented photographer. I will always remember this photoshoot with my guitar because my friends and I thought it was so funny when everyone would be watching me while I was pretending to play for everyone.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very dedicated to my schoolwork and I maintain a GPA above 4.0 every year. I take multiple AP classes, including an honors foreign language class, and I have been inducted into the National Honors Society and the National Hispanic Honors Society at school.

Why is having such a strong work ethic so important to you?
My parents have always instilled in me the importance of education to be able to get a good job doing what I love when I am older to support my family and help those in need.

What has your favorite AP class been and why?
My favorite AP class has been AP Physics 1 because it is challenging to understand, but once you figure it out it is actually enjoyable. I also love my teacher in this class!

What honors foreign language are you taking, and do you have any plans to visit that country?
I am taking Honors Spanish 4 and I would love to visit a Spanish-speaking country one day and be able to communicate with the locals!

What do you do in the National Hispanic Honors Society?
I was recently inducted into it and I was called on-stage at the school ceremony to be awarded a certificate for my academic excellence in my previous Spanish classes.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I feel passionate about volunteer work, as previously stated in my nomination. It is something that I devote a lot of my time to, and I believe that all teenagers should be a part of at some point in their lives. It is extremely rewarding to directly see how you are impacting other people's lives that need it the most.

What tips do you have for teens interested in getting into volunteer work but aren't sure how to get started?
I would advise all teens to start local. If you are involved in a church, then ask your pastor or youth pastor if there are any outreach programs that you could be involved in. You could also start by signing up to volunteer at a nearby food bank or animal shelter. However, my most important piece of advice would be to find some kind of volunteer work that would allow you to work first-hand with people because there is nothing better than the rewarding feeling of directly seeing who you are helping and how it improves their lives.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I would say teaching myself to play guitar was very challenging and I accomplished it by frequent practice and watching YouTube videos to learn.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to always give your best effort in school because it really pays off in the end and to find a group of friends that will always have your back and support you through thick and thin.

Destiny Adams - Arkansas
Nomination by Adriana Cornejo
Photography by Christine Roberts
Issue 49 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Destiny is an amazing role model! She works hard in school and strives to be her very best. I believe Destiny would be a great nominee for the next issue of Inspiring Teens because of her ambition to push herself to new horizons. She is an excellent leader and with this opportunity, I believe Destiny will make a big difference within her community.

What should we definitely know about you?
The amount of fight I have in me and how I do not let things dent my determination for the future I want for myself. The amount of courage I have to be different and not try to fit in with the so-called normal.

Being a teen during a pandemic is especially courageous. How did you get through the hard days, and how did you help others get through when they were down?
My time during the pandemic was difficult but I just had to keep my mind in the future. How the hard work would pay off in the end. If my friends were feeling down we would find a way to have an online face to face talk.

What is your favorite part of college life and what surprised you most on your first day?
My favorite part of college life is just being able to be on campus and go to in person classes. I was shocked with how social and excited everyone was.

Picture
Photography by Christine Roberts

What are you studying and what activities are planning on participating in at college?
I am currently studying psychology and I am planning on joining a Christian club called Reach and to try to study abroad.

What is the biggest dream you are chasing, and what were/are your steps to achieving?
The biggest one I am chasing is to become a psychotherapist and deal with hard core mental health problems and attempt to help those people.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I will always stand up for what I believe and not be silent because someone wants me to. I respect other people's wishes and dreams. I will always encourage people to chase their dreams no matter the costs.
Picture
Photography by Christine Roberts

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The topic would be mental health and how important it is to identify. I have experience in my own fight with mental health and everyone's story is different. Some cases may be worse than others but that doesn't make it easier for that specific person everyone needs help sometimes.

How do you feel the pandemic impacted this issue and what advice would you give to teens still struggling?
It has definitely made it more of a trend type situation, people are not meant to be alone for so long. Mental health has increased within teens since the pandemic. To the ones struggling I suggest getting the help and care you deserve.

Picture
Photography by Christine Roberts

What was your photoshoot like with Christine Robers and what did you love most about it?
It was a very fun and eventful experience. We went to a bunch of different locations with different backgrounds. I loved the weather that day, it couldn’t have been more perfect.

What's the most exciting thing up next for you, Destiny?
The next thing is definitely working on getting my college degree to work professionally in my field of interest.

Grace Pitts – Arkansas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Christen Pitts
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Grace Pitts shines on and off the stage/screen! She performed in NYC in The America Project, an off-Broadway workshop, more than 20 plays/musicals (two world premieres), and many commercials/films. She is a member of the Dance Troupe, Thespian Society, NHS for Dance Arts, Choir, Tri-M Music Society, Teen Ensemble, Heart Ball Sweetheart (Silver Service Award), Girl of Distinction- Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame. Grace uses her artistic gifts to inspire, teach, learn, challenge, and create opportunities. She also created her own baked goods/custom art business, Grace’s Gifts, and has over 350 clients!

How did you get your start on and off the stage/screen? What are your most memorable moments at auditions and/or behind the scenes?
My mom is a dance teacher and choreographer, so I was “attending” rehearsals when she was pregnant with me! I loved being in the studio and playing onstage while she was rehearsing, so performing was a natural first step for me. I started modeling when I was nine months old, dance at three, and did my first commercial at five. I performed in my first musical at eight and was in my first movie at nine! I am so grateful for all the wonderful opportunities I have had. I have worked with incredibly talented people over the years. With every new character, I learn a new story. I can just stop being me for a moment in time and absorb the lessons of someone else’s life.
One of my most memorable moments was when I played Little Red Riding Hood in Into The Woods. I was the youngest in the show and was in my “safe place” with my “theatre family.” During a break from rehearsal one night, my phone lit up and mean messages appeared on the screen. As Little Red faces threats from the menacing Wolf, I was confronted with something far more terrifying: middle school bullies. Fellow Into the Woods actors noticed my distress and comforted me without hesitation. The next day, the director called everyone into a cast meeting and the woman who played Rapunzel presented a jar to me filled with sweet and encouraging notes from each cast member. Whenever I was sad, I could just open up the jar and pull out a note to cheer me up. That is the reason I love musical theatre: the family that it creates out of a community of strangers.

Let's talk about performing in NYC in the America Project. How did you find out about it, get involved, and what were your conditions like? (How often did you perform, where did you stay, how did you get along with the rest of the cast, etc.)
The creative team for The America Project (Dina Slawson, Dell Howlett, and David Dabbon) did a nationwide casting call. My brother, Corbin, and I submitted our auditions and were two of the twenty-two young artists cast in this new musical workshop. We rehearsed at Pearl Studios in New York City and performed at the Sheen Center. It was an incredible experience! We met some amazing and talented friends from across the country working on this show! It was exciting to originate a role for a show that will hopefully make it to Broadway one day!

With your many commercials and films, which are your most notable that you are proud of? Tell us about your top 2
.
One - I was cast in a feature film last year called “Don’t Say My Name” which was inspired by true events about a young human trafficking survivor who escapes her captors and is on a journey of survival. We shot the film in and around Orlando, Florida and I had a great time meeting actors and filmmakers from across the country. The film is such an important subject and hopefully will shed some light into this tragic issue.

Two - My brother, Corbin, was cast as a recurring character in True Detective Season 3 on HBO with Mahershala Ali, Stephen Dorff, and Carmen Ejogo. I was so proud of him and was so happy to have been cast as a high school student in one of the scenes he shared with Carmen Ejogo. I loved being a part of the show and had fun on set watching my brother. We celebrated his 12th birthday on set followed by dinner with some of his castmates: Brandon Flynn, Rhys Wakefield, and Richard Meehan. It was fun hanging out in his trailer, meeting and working with so many talented actors, going to the red carpet premiere, and watching the show when it aired on HBO.

You belong to a LOT of clubs and organizations and volunteer a lot. Which 2 are you most involved in/closest to your heart or goals and why?
When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me.” This quote by Erma Bombeck resonates with me because I am a strong believer that giving back to the community who supports you is very important. I have learned so many incredible lessons from working with and helping others, as well as, connecting with community stakeholders. Many of my volunteer experiences have been through the arts. I have performed for Arkansas Enterprises for the Developmentally Disabled’s Curtain Call for a Cause, Martin Luther King Megafest, Dark Night and Encore for Education for ACT, helped teach dance to ambassadors of the Children’s Tumor Foundation, assistant taught musical theatre classes for the Acansa Arts Festival, Argenta Community Theatre, the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, and more! Through the arts, I have found my voice, self-confidence, and the ability to express myself. I hope to encourage others to find what they love and share in the joy of the arts with others!

I was honored to be chosen as a one of five Girls of Distinction for the Arkansas Women's Hall of Fame. I was paired with Hall of Fame honorees, Academy Award Winner, Mary Steenburgen, and Dr. Carolyn Blakely- two incredible women blazing a path in their careers! It was so inspiring to hear all of the women empowering and supporting one another!

Through my volunteer work in the arts and my community organizations, I have over 1,600 community service hours. I am proud to give back and feel I am a better person for sharing my time, talent, and energy with others.

You own your own business, Grace's Gifts. Tell us about it, including why and how you got started, any difficulties running it while you are busy doing so many things and how you
manage it, and where you hope it grows in the upcoming years.
I was cast in “Bye Bye Birdie” at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre for the summer of 2020, but the show was cancelled due to COVID-19. With my newfound free time, I wanted to get a job, so I created Grace’s Gifts! I love baking and creating art, so this was the perfect opportunity! In just a few months, I have over 350 clients and am even getting an internship credit at school for my company! I am using the money earned to help pay for college audition coaching, workshops, and application fees. www.gracejpitts.com (website) and imdb.me/gracepitts

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about empowering others. There is so much negativity in our society and I think it is important to support friends, include others, and to make people feel important. The negative effects of social media on teenagers has led to many young people having depression and anxiety. I hope that the stigma of asking for help or understanding could be erased. Lift one another up...be there for each other. If you see someone being hurt in person or on social media- step up and help make things right.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In addition to being a performer for most of my life, I have been a part of many community service organizations. I feel it is important to be a part of the community you live in. I was a member of the Mayor's Youth Council for two years, Student Council for four years, volunteered at homeless shelters, at local arts organizations, was an assistant teacher for musical theatre classes at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Acansa Arts Festival, and the Argenta Community Theatre. Being an active member of your community is very fulfilling and allows you to learn and grow. The arts can change lives.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
Bullying...I am VERY passionate about this subject. It only takes one person to make a change. Step and stand up to help others. "Liking" mean and hateful comments on social media makes you just as guilty as the one posting them. Think before posting things. It is rude to exclude. If you see someone being left out- invite them to sit with you. If your friends are your true friends, they will love you in your good and bad times. They won't turn on you and post negative things or spread rumors. Encourage others to be a friend and to be kind.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

Never give up and ignore the “noise.”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Living in New York City and yes!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I like to read.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can make puppets.

Who do you find inspiring?
Lindsay Mendez. She got rejected from every drama program she auditioned for for college but she’s a big Broadway star now.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
Lots of calendars! I have to be good at time management and it is difficult at times (especially if things overlap).

Shelby Cook - Arkansas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Laken Brown Photography
Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Shelby Cook is a extremely talented young lady with a huge heart for others, and that shows in all she does. She is the sweetest and most well-mannered girl, and I am proud to say she is someone my daughter looks up to! It is no doubt she is an amazing role model for girls of all ages!
Picture

What is the Arkansas Outstanding Teen program and how did you get involved with them?
The Miss Arkansas Outstanding Teen program is part of the Miss America Organization. It is a state pageant that you have to win a local preliminary to compete at. Although it is a pageant it is so much more than that, the people and role models I have met, the children I have gotten to talk to and the volunteer work I have gotten to do is just a couple of wonderful things this program has given me the opportunity to do. When I was younger, I was terrified to talk to people and my mom wanted to find a way to help get me out of my comfort zone, so she entered me in a local pageant. That was the day I fell in love with pageants, people and being able to be a role model to others.

Tell me about Be the change, your anti- bullying platform. How did you come up with this platform?
As a kid I was bullied constantly, but not by some random kid from a different grade. I was bullied by my best friend. Many times, bullying spawns from people trying to find a way to make their friends laugh and sometimes that ends hurting others. Being the change is about more than holding the door open for someone it’s about being kind to everyone whether you know them or not. Being the change starts with you and your everyday life.

What inspired you to want to start dancing? How long have you been doing dancing?
My mom put me in my first dance class at the age of three. I hated it. I was not a people person and I was painfully shy. However, as I got older, I quickly began to realize that dance was my outlet and my safe place. It allowed me to express who I was and what I was feeling without having to say it. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the love and support I have received on my journey through dance.

What has been your favorite memory from competitive dance? Why?
The people and the friends I have met. I have no words to describe the feeling of walking on and off that stage or getting to stand up and receive an award. However, the amazing, talented, and kind people I have met throughout my dance career are indescribable. My entire life everyone has been nothing but loving, encouraging and supportive and I couldn’t be more thankful.

What goals do you have for your future? Do you hope to continue with dance?
Although dance is my passion and I know I will never be able to ever truly give it up, I have decided to go to college to become a physical therapist. I cannot tell you how many times I have been hurt and out of dance for an injury and the physical therapists were nothing but kind and encouraging. I hope to be the light for kids just like myself one day and hopefully get them back to doing what they love most in no time.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Getting over my fear of being perfect. When I was younger, I constantly felt like I needed to be perfect in everybody’s eyes. Whether in dance, school, cheer or just in general. Over the past few years I have learned that nobody is ever truly perfect we have to learn to love ourselves the way we are, regardless of the opinions of others.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

WORK HARD FOR WHAT YOU WANT!!! Nothing is impossible if you want something you have to put in the work because nobody is going to do it for you. A lesson my dance teacher taught me when I was younger is if you are practicing 16 hours a week there is someone, somewhere that is practicing 17 hours. You have to work hard and set goals to accomplish.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In five years I hope to be starting my first year of physical therapy school, hopefully in Northwest Arkansas at UAMS. I hope I have a house a car and I’m close enough to home so I can still come watch my brothers at their games and see my parents. At the end of the day I hope to be living in my hometown and eventually raise my kids in the same town that I grew up in.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Cheering! I absolutely love going to games and cheering on the players. I’ve always been someone that got super excited at games so when I got old enough, I tried out for the cheer team, and that was the best decision ever. I get to cheer for the boys and girls at my school while showing school pride.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
As a dancer, cheerleader, and pageant girl something about me that throws people off guard is I love to hunt. Specifically bow hunting, I’ve been shooting a bow since the age of six and haven’t looked back.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Kindness, it’s so important to be kind whether it’s a big or small act of kindness it never goes to waste. Something I try to always tell myself is just because I’m having an off day doesn’t mean I have to make everybody else have an off day. We all need to start by doing three nice things a day for three different people so we can start a chain reaction of kindness.

3 Things on your bucket list
Number one- drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, in a little red corvette all while blaring the song little red corvette.
Number two- visit Greece so I can get all the Mamma Mia vibes.
Number three- adopt a golden retriever and watch all the air bud movies with him.

Who do you find inspiring?
Now I know this may sound cliche, but my mom. She is the strongest most hard-working person I know all while taking care of three kids. She pushes me to be the best me I can be and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without all the love and support she has showed and continues to show me.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I try to be positive, kind and loving towards everyone. More kind people is something our world needs right now and I hope by being a positive role model and promoting my platform “Be The Change” I can help spread kindness to others.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
All I can say is thank you so much for this amazing opportunity it truly means the world, and I’m so excited for what comes next.

Anna Claire Hay – Arkansas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Raygan Sylvester
Photography by Jodie Kelly Photography
Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: After Anna Claire Hay watched her brother save someone’s life by saying five simple words -“You can sit with us”- Anna Claire went on a mission that took her all the way to Capitol Hill to lobby state senators about the importance of accepting others for their unique character qualities. Her message has reached the ears of over 15,000 students in numerous countries. She recently published her own book on the topic, available on Amazon. When she’s not volunteering, Anna Claire serves as captain of her cheer, track, and trap shooting teams at school and reigns as the current Miss Arkansas Teen USA.

Tell me more about the process of how You Can Sit With Us got started?
YCSWU started when I witnessed the impact of my brother saving someone’s life by stating those 5 simple words. I’ve always had a passion for volunteering and had been speaking to schools and civic organizations about anti bullying, inclusion and diversity. What you and how you say can help people develop confidence, competence, and self-control. Words can lift people up to their highest potential or tear them down and bring them down to their lowest lows. After traveling across the state of Arkansas and speaking to over 10,000 students mainly elementary aged kids I realized there were not a-lot of resources out there to help educate the younger generation on the impact of inclusion, so I self-authored a book that I now share when I go to speaking engagements. This book is for sale on Amazon for others to purchase to share.

How can other people spread this same message of inclusion, diversity, and equality that you are spreading?
I believe we all need to make diversity and inclusion more of a priority.
Feeling like you belong satisfies one of the most fundamental of human needs. It’s that sense of belonging that fuels the fundamental idea behind diversity and inclusion at work.
I started an You Can Sit With Us Ambassador program that puts ambassadors in schools and civic groups to ensure there is always a point of contact and go to person to encourage inclusion, diversity and kindness within these organizations.
When you feel included you feel valued and important.

What is it like getting to speak at so many schools and organizations? Can you share with us a little of what you tell them?
I feel honored each time I am asked to speak to a group. Knowing that I have a chance to encourage and empower them and potentially initiate change encourages me. If I can give students access to resources that can help them to build confidence and work in the direction of attaining growth and transformation, then I have done my job. I focus on talking to them about the power of their words, what it means to be B.R.A.V.E, how to be inclusive and encourage diversity. I believe when you can demonstrate a life applicable lesson it’s easier for kids to understand why, so I try to incorporate life applicable lessons when speaking to students.

What was going through you head when you found out you won the Arkansas top youth volunteer award? What other volunteer projects have you done?
I had no idea I had been nominated for this award so when I was called into the principal’s office at school, I was somewhat a taken back. To hear I was chosen out of 13,000 applicants out of the state of Arkansas to represent Arkansas in Washington, DC at the National convention I was ecstatic. I can honestly say to date this is the greatest honor I have yet to receive. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service.
Created in 1995 by Prudential and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the program honors middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state and national level.
Thus far, it has recognized more than 140,000 young people who’ve made a difference – and inspired countless others to consider how they might contribute to their communities.
The Spirit of Community Awards program also honors youth volunteers in countries outside the U.S. where Prudential has a significant presence: Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, India, China and Brazil.
I also have served two terms on my cities youth council board. While serving on the Springdale Youth Council Board I became involved in the workings of our local government, had the opportunity to job shadow City officials, performed community service projects for the benefit of Springdale residents, offered advise to local government officials on the issues that face young people in our community, and learned about local government and the importance of civic participation.
I stay actively involved with my Teens with Integrity and You Can Sit With Us Platforms speaking time many schools, churches and civic organizations.
I actively volunteer with the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy.

How did you get your book published one Amazon? Can you share with me more of what the publishing process is like?
Let me just start by saying one of the things I’ve been challenged with my whole life and that’s been hard for me to talk about publicly is my disability. I am dyslexic. Reading, spelling sometimes writing those things are challenging for me. Although I am intelligent I had to understand that I learn differently from most people so if you would of ask me if I thought I would of ever written a book the answer would of been a firm NO!!! I had a wonderful support team to assist, a great family friend to illustrate the book a brother who provided the story for this book as well as a lifetime of character and life lessons and last but not least supportive and loving parents. It is a project I’m super proud of and something I hope helps lots of people.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

I think the hardest thing I ever accomplished was getting You Can Sit With Us spread internationally. My goal is to have ambassadors and the message of You Can Sit With Us in all 50 states.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
You can really do anything you set your mind too. I know that might sound so cliche but it’s so true. I have made sacrifices missed out on social activities and in many cases lived a little different life than some of my peers but it’s all about choices. I have kept my eye on the prize and my ultimate goals. It takes self-discipline and dedication, it takes perseverance and sometimes reminding yourself that if at first you don’t succeed try again. It takes supportive loving parents and support from friends and family. For me, a key part has been my relationship and walk with my lord and savior.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In the next 5 years I hope I have been accepted to medical school at UAMS and I am on the road to becoming a physician.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My dad and I duck hunt. I love the spending time with him doing something he enjoys; I love being outdoors and the challenge of the hunt.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
A year ago I learned how to high jump and I absolutely love it... I have enjoyed running on the track team for last couple of years in high school but never considered jumping until last year. I tried it and now I’m hooked.

Picture
Photography by Kelly Hay

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Anti bullying... it’s such a problem on so many levels. It’s in our schools, workplaces, churches, nursing homes, everywhere we go. I encounter women all the time that still remember situations and things that happened to them in high school. All those years later and these things are still impacting them!!! So yes this is something that if I could educate on and talk about I will anytime I’m given a chance.

3 Things on your bucket list
*skydive
*having peanut butter
*getting a banded duck

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope my work ethic, ability to connect with others, kindness and passion for my platform is inspiring to others.

Makenzie Cox – Arkansas
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Amber Aaron Photography
Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Makenzie Cox is such a sweet fun-loving young lady!! She joined my Teen Model Rep team for 2020 and is absolutely amazing to work with! She has really came out of her shell and is blossoming into an amazing young lady. She inspires me to be a better photographer ever session we have!
Picture
Photography by Amber Aaron Photography

How did being a teen model rep help you come out of your shell?
What is your favorite memory so far from it?

I was very skeptical about being a teen rep because I am so shy! I hate being the center of attention and honestly did not think that I would enjoy it as much as I have so far. Being a teen model has given me so much confidence to be myself and be comfortable in my own skin. My favorite memory so far is during the first group photoshoot where I was able to meet all the girls. Everyone was so nice, helpful, and encouraging. I never felt left out or out of place. These girls are like family!

Tell me about the work that goes into wanting to graduate high school with 2 years of college credit?
My goal to graduate high school with two years of college is going to take a lot of work, motivation, and dedication. I must be able to focus on my studies while understanding what classes I need to complete for my goals. My first steps in accomplishing this was to determine that I wanted to go to medical school. Once I figured out that I wanted to become a doctor, I researched what classes I needed and what the fastest route to complete these courses were. I spoke with my parents after researching our area high school programs that offered concurrent college credit and made the decision to switch high schools my freshman year. I have started studying for the ACT, taking college preparatory classes, and have even read through my mom’s medical books.

What inspired you to be what to become a surgeon in a rural community?
Growing up in a rural community has proven to be both satisfying and challenging. Small town communities typically do not have a lot to offer when it comes to community events, medical providers, or opportunities for advancement. There are so many people within our community that struggle to find transportation to nearby metroplexes for their healthcare needs. My goal is to bring medical care to them, in their community, to be better serve my community. If we can keep our community members local for their healthcare needs, we can inevitability increase our community’s revenue.

What helped you push through and overcome bullying? What advice would you give people going through a similar situation?
Over the past year, I have learned that bullies say things to hurt you or bring your down because they are unhappy with themselves. I have always been raised by the “Golden Rule” and strive to achieve this every day. I am always encouraged to push through harsh words from bullies with my Christian faith. My advice to others that are being bullied is to simply stand up for yourself. You are your best advocate and should always be your number one fan.

Tell me more about how you got into fostering animals? What is the process like?
My grandmother retired recently and needed a hobby. We are a pretty close family so when she found puppies one day, we were over the moon excited to help her take care of little babies. Since that time, we have helped several of her foster dogs socialize, give medications, bath them, and deliver them to their new homes. It is sad to see them leave my grandma’s house but I know they are going to a good family with a good life ahead of them.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to anyone that is given the opportunity to become a teen rep is to take the chance. I have met new friends and become more confident in my abilities to speak with others about standing up for what you believe in and always doing the right thing.

Carlie Tuttle Bailey  - Arkansas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Victoria Hathorn
Photography by Fallon Curry Photography
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Carlie loves adventure, dancing, cheering and family. Carlie lost her Daddy at a young age of 8 and knows the importance of living each day to fullest. She puts her all into everything she does. She loves cheering on her Bobcats as Jr. High Captain. She started dancing when she was 3 and loves dancing and expressing herself through the music. Our littles really look up to Carlie and she is always cheering them on with every adventure they take on. Carlie has a kind heart. Carlie is going to achieve great things. I love watching her. The sky is the limit Carlie. Spread your wings and fly.

What do you love most about dance and cheer, and how have they both impacted your life?
One thing I love most about dancing and cheerleading is the challenge. With these activities they are always giving me something new to work on or something I need to improve on. I always love being pushed harder so I can perform to my absolute best.

What has been one of the most memorable experiences cheering as the Jr. High Captain for your squad?
Getting to go out on the field and hear the title of captain by your name is a huge honor for me. Growing up, being a captain was one of my biggest goals in life, I aspired to be like the big girls out on the field. And now thinking that little girls look at me just like that, has to be one of my most favorite parts about being Captain.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I hope to be in big places doing big things! In five years I hope to be starting my freshman year of college at the U of A and be and be living my year to the fullest as a Razorback Cheerleader. When going to college I plan to be getting my degree in business. My dream job is to be a photographer. Being a photographer does not always require a degree, but I think a business degree would be handy to have on your side just in case. I am also hoping that my boutique will be a hit by then and that I am able to live an amazing life full of traveling, friends, family, some beautifully taken photos, super cute clothes, and lots of love for what I do.

Picture
Photography by Fallon Curry Photography

Tell me a little bit about your boutique you are starting and what inspired you to do so.
The boutique I am starting is one of my newest projects! Personally I love sharing my style and the way I view life with others. From a young age up until now, I have always wanted to become a Young Entrepreneur. And sharing my love, joy, and happiness with others threw super cute clothing sounds like the right way to go! Now, this project is still in the process but I hope to be getting it out there soon!

How have you overcome struggles you have faced in your life by moving past them in a positive way?
As it says in my nomination, I lost my dad at the young age of 8. My dad was like my best friend so this event was very hard for, me and still is to this day. But something or more like someone who has helped me move past it in a positive way, is Jesus. I have learned that Jesus has an amazing plan and you just have to roll with it. So I like to think about what I do have like, amazing friends and family,More than what has been taken away. And I like to do it all with a smile on my face!

Picture
Photography by Fallon Curry Photography
How can your love for helping others and achieving your dreams inspire other teens to do the same?
I know that we have all had a dream. Some want to be an NFL player and some want to be Big Time Singers. And my dreams might be just a little different, but I want to show everyone that big dreams are not just for the lucky. Everyone can achieve them with lots of hard work and dedication. But when I am doing well, I want to help others that just need a little bit of a boost to achieve their dreams as well. And I hope that other teens will start to achieve their dreams and help others as well!

Kaylin Rains

Picture

Kaylin Rains – Arkansas
Interview by Diamond Orin
Nomination and Photography by Sierra Sugg Photography
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kaylin Rains is inspiring because of her desire to serve the Lord and use her TikTok platform to create fun, Christian content. At the time of writing this, she and her sister, who share a joint account (rainssisters), have garnered almost 30K followers on TikTok by posting content such as Bible verses, funny Jesus-related lip-syncs, and dances to Christian music. On a platform filled with profane music, lewd dancing, and other harmful behaviors, she’s chosen to ignore what the world has told her she should post and instead be a light.
Picture
Photography by Sierra Sugg Photography

What do you want people to know about your story and why you do what you do?
A few years ago, I was going down a path without God in my life. It was because I didn’t truly know Him. I went to church and did the “right things” but I wasn’t happy. I saw how happy others were and was jealous of it. I eventually discovered that there is a big difference between religion and having an actual relationship with God and love for Jesus. Now every day, I try to show people how important it is to have that relationship because I couldn’t see myself not having it, and I wouldn’t want to.

What inspired you to start your TikTok instead of following all the other trends on there?
I didn’t want to gain followers or be known for showing off my body, cussing, or following the social norm. I wanted to be known as the girl who loves Jesus and spread that love to others.

Why do you think it’s important to be confident?
I think it is important to be confident to show people who you truly are, how you feel, and what you believe in. That way there is no question. Being confident and having self-worth promotes a sense of self- happiness. Also, I think confidence is an attractive quality and helps you connect with others.

How do you build your confidence?
Personally, I build my self-confidence by surrounding myself with others who love Jesus and avoid drama. I think I build my confidence by being social and participating in activities. I also think that doing things I like and am good at builds my confidence, but I feel it is also important for me to try new things to discover other things I may like or be good at. Lastly, but possibly most importantly, I feel that reading the Bible helps build my confidence.

Picture
Photography by Sierra Sugg Photography

In today’s society it can be difficult to be open about your faith. How can you encourage people to be open about their faith?
I think the best way is by being an example. I feel that a lot of the time people are too nervous to be honest with how they truly feel or what they believe in because they fear what others may think of them. However, I find that a lot of the time others feel and believe the same way I do, they are just too afraid to take the first step. That is one reason I wanted to create a positive Christian presence on TikTok

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever done is getting out of the lukewarm part of being a Christian. It is hard and uncomfortable at first, but once you do, its amazing.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Find Jesus, he is the center of my life. If you have already found Him, make Him the center of yours. Don’t surround yourself with temptation. 2 Corinthians 4:18

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I want to do something in the ministry. Now what that will be, I am not sure. I am waiting for God to answer that question.

Picture
Photography by Melissa Rains

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?

I love painting.
I have been in dance or cheer since the age of two, and I competed most of those years. I am currently captain of my high school's varsity cheer team. I am on both the sideline team and the competitive team. I have suffered numerous injuries during my years of cheerleading, but I was always determined to come back even stronger.
I have made in All American for cheer every year that I was eligible to try out. As an All-American cheerleader, I performed in the Liberty Bowl halftime show and participated in the 2020 London New Year’s Day Parade. I love helping others in my sport as well. I love hosting the Kiddie Camp and working with young future cheerleaders. I find that I love working with younger children because they look up to you and they are less drama.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I can cross one eye and keep one straight.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
It would be anything about Jesus and being confident.

3 Things on your bucket list
-Skydiving
-Go visit the Ark
-Go to Salvation Mountain in California

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my love for Jesus inspires others to want the same thing and to be confident in your beliefs and faith.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
Fight for what you believe in.
I am currently doing very well in school, but that was not always the case. In elementary and middle school, I struggled. I was diagnosed with vision processing disabilities and dyslexia in 7th grade. I received vision therapy for several months and am still receiving dyslexia therapy.

Sarah Barksdale - Arkansas
Interview by Diamond Orin
Nomination by Laken Brown
Photography by Hope Mulanax Photography
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Sarah Barksdale is a girl with a huge heart for others and for her dance & it shows in all she does. She is one of the best dancers I have ever seen & continues to push herself. She is immensely talented & has a true passion for dance.
Picture
Photography by Hope Mulanax Photography
When did you start dancing and what do you love so much about doing it?
I started dancing at age 2 and competitive dancing at age 5. I love that dance pushes me to work hard, be confident, and it brings out my competitive side.

What is your favorite kind of dance and why?
Contemporary is my favorite kind of dance because it puts other styles of dance together like lyrical and modern and I love the unique movements.

How does dancing help you cope with the hard times in life?
Dance helps me forget the hardest parts of my life. Right as I walk in the studio, I can forget everything negative that’s going on. Through dance, I can express the emotions that I’m feeling without saying a word.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

Tell me about some of your favorite dance accomplishments.
Some of my favorite accomplishments are winning 2 National Dance Championships at ages 6 and 16. I have also won scholarships to 2 professional dance workshops. I have performed in multiple shows called Kidz Roc at the Clay Cooper Theatre in Branson, Missouri and I’ve had the honor to assist world famous choreographers at the Talent on Parade Dance Directive workshops.

Tell me a little more about the Madison County Health Coalition group you are in.
The Madison County Health Coalition is a group of high school students that meet once a month, attend events for teens, do radio ads, speak to our local schools, and have an ad on a billboard in our town about teen drug use and vaping.

What advice would you give to someone to maintain a high GPA while do extra activities (e.g. sports and clubs/groups) like you?
The advice I would give is to always know that education is most important, be confident in yourself and your abilities, and maintain your drive and passion in all of your activities.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever accomplished is winning the National Dance Championship at age 16. My dance studio had to close as a direct result of the CoVid-19 pandemic, so I put in hours of practice at home, had confidence in myself, and was determined to do my very best the day I took the stage.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give would be to have passion, determination, a hard work ethic, and always be humble in winning and defeat.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I plan to go to college and in 5 years have a degree in dance and Diagnostic Medical Sonography. I want to have a career as an Ultrasound Technician and as a dance teacher. I also plan to be married and starting a family.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activities are riding mules and riding ATV’s with my family.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
No, I’ve been fortunate enough to have family and teachers help me find all of my talents. They see the potential in me even when I don’t see it in myself.

Picture
Photography by Hope Mulanax Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The topic I would present to my peers would definitely be dance because it has been a huge part of my life for 14 years. I feel like I could speak not just about the technique of it, but also about teamwork, work ethic, and how you can become a role model for younger kids.

3 Things on your bucket list
The 3 things on my bucket list are to visit Paris, France, go on a hot air balloon ride, and swim with dolphins.

Who do you find inspiring?
My sister, Emily inspires me. At 15, she was diagnosed with a kidney disease. However, that didn’t stop her from following her dreams. She is 22 now, owns a small business, is married, and just gave birth to my beautiful niece, Amelia.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my work ethic, personality, and dancing inspires others. I am a student teacher at my dance studio and I think my students see me as a role model they can look up to and I want them to see the best in me no matter the struggles that I might be going through.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I go to a public school during the day and I’m thankful to have a dance teacher who works the dance schedule around cheer practices and games in order to make sure I don’t have to miss a dance class.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I would like add that in 2015, I danced with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders at AT&T Stadium. In 2019, I appeared as an extra in the recently released movie “Max Winslow And The House Of Secrets” and I appeared in a music video to a song called “The Answers” written and performed by Emery Kelly for the movie soundtrack.

My dance teacher is also working full time as a nurse, so my friends and I try to help out as much as we can, we help by teaching classes throughout the week, or when my dance teacher is in go in and help the kids stay focused.

Tell me about the unified sports program you have at your school.
Our school was just officially named a national unified champion high school, this programs all about helping children with disabilities be able to play sports, we go with them to games and play the games with them. It is also through special Olympics.

Picture
Photography by Laken Brown Photography

Why is it important for kids with disabilities to be able to play sports like you?
Because I feel like they want to be just like everyone else, I want them to have fun, some days are bad days, but when they are happy every day is a good day, and for them to be able to play sports, it can keep them doing what they love.

What do you like about helping others?

I like helping others because I like seeing everyone happy. At school I’ll do little things like, holding open the door for others, providing a pencil or even paper if someone is of need, just small acts of kindness can really boost someone’s mood.
