Tell us about your dance career.
Dance has always been ingrained in me! As soon as I was able to move around, I was dancing. My parents noticed my love for dance as I would bounce and dance to any tune, anywhere, anytime! My Mom put me in classes as early as possible and I’ve been dancing ever since! I’ve been dancing for 12 years now and I am still working hard to continue into a professional career as a dancer!

What dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
I study ballet, en pointe, jazz, musical theater, contemporary, and hip hop. My favorite style is jazz with contemporary as a close second! I think jazz comes a bit more naturally to me, I like the fast pace of the style, and that the choreography of jazz can be so different from dance to dance.

Tell us about your studio. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
My studio is called Premier Studio for Dance. I love the amazing coaches that I get to learn from! Premier is full of talented dancers, so I am always pushed to work hard, to stay focused and challenge myself. I stand out in the studio because I am a lefty! There are not many lefty dancers!

What has been your favorite dance competition?
My favorite competition was Platinum Nationals in Panama City, FL! It was a lot of fun to travel with my studio and showcase our dances among many talented studios from around the country! I performed in 5 dances, my favorites were called Glimpse of Us, that was a contemporary, we wore a pretty cream colored, sparkly costume, and Fergalicious, which was a jazz, and we wore a hot pink costume. Both of those dances did really well at Nationals!

If you could dance on any dance tv show, which one would it be and why?
I would love to be able to dance on World of Dance! There are so many talented dancers on that show, I would love the opportunity to show off my skills on that stage! Just to be on their stage would be amazing!

What do you wish non dancers knew about dancing/dancers?
Dancing is a very disciplined art! You have to work hard and be focused on so many things at once to be a good technician of dance. But at the same time, it’s so liberating and free. It’s not just about being at the ballet barre working on technique and making things look easy, because it’s not, it’s also about expressing your innermost self, and allowing anything to come out during your dance. I wish everyone had an opportunity to do it!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am on 6 competitive dance teams of different styles, as well as a competitive solo! I have been dancing on a competition level since age 8.

What do you enjoy drawing and creating with your oil pastels?
I love drawing Disney characters. I also love to create oil pastel landscapes with silhouette figures on colorful backgrounds.

How would your besties describe you?
I think my friends would describe me as kind, funny, goofy, dedicated, and a great friend.

What do you and your besties like to do together?
My friends and I love to dance silly dances, make funny videos, make bracelets, and play Nintendo Switch games together!

I have a German Shepherd named Triton, and a Havanese named Luna. They are the sweetest dogs!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Dance! Dance allows freedom of expression! I feel free when I dance! I could talk about the happiness it brings me forever! I also love the relationship of music to the dance, as I love music so much!

How did you find your photographer, 12.9 Dance Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Some of my friends in my studio were ambassadors for 12.9 Dance Photography and their pictures were beautiful! They really showcased their talents and beautiful skills, as a person who is interested in photography, I was very drawn to become an ambassador myself. My favorite parts are the opportunities like this, as well as meeting new people, and getting amazing pictures!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would find me hanging out with my family and friends, and dancing in my dance room at home!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I have a new contemporary solo that I will compete this year. I am really excited about it! I love the song, choreography, and costume so much!

Nomination: Macie contemplates her future. Her natural beauty flows from deep within her heart. She focuses her vision on a future of serving others as she pursues her career goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I started working at a bridal boutique at age sixteen, earned a leadership role and was entrusted as a keyholder. It helped me learn how to meet people from all walks of life, learning to think outside the box and be creative, overcome obstacles, and assist them with their attire and accessories for one of the most important and emotional days of their lives. I have had to take charge and be able to help find solutions quickly. I found that being able to adapt to challenging situations has become key to personal growth and confidence while serving others.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have always been close to my grandma. I learned by her example to be strong, determined, and hardworking while also being respectful and empathetic. These are traits she passed on to my mother and also to me. My grandma has encouraged me to work hard and study hard and that I could be anything I wanted to be. She has helped me with many projects in high school and has supported me in my desire to become a nurse. I know she will always be there for me and cheer me on to success in all I do.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very passionate about what the future holds for me and eventually, a family of my own. Even as a little girl I always wanted to help those who needed help the most. Although I hated the sound of ambulances, fire trucks, and cop cars, I knew that I wanted to be a nurse. I’ll be able to help little kids who cannot speak for themselves and assist older people who cannot help themselves. I love working as a CNA and look forward to doing even more as I earn my degree and put my skills in motion.

How did you find your photographer, Alex Hoedebecke Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mother and I found Alex Hoedebecke while scrolling through Facebook looking for a photographer for my senior pictures. When we came upon her site, we noticed how creative she was with her clients with so many different types of poses. Her pictures seemed to create the most intimate moments and she had so many settings that made her photographs so different than others. She really seemed able to capture the personality of her clients, not just a picture. I Immediately knew I wanted Alex to take my once in a lifetime senior pictures.

Why did you choose a future of serving others?
There are many ways to serve and help people who need assistance, but working in a hospital has opened my eyes to a whole new level of helping others. I quickly learned that you are there for people in good times and bad and have been able to observe first-hand, what being a nurse is really about. It is not all about administering drugs and running tests. It is about the heart you give to help those patients whether you have a psychiatric or mentally ill patient, or those who are physically sick or have a debilitating disease, young or old, you see and feel what a difference you can make in the way you care for them.

What interests you most about being a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist?
Working in the medical friend and being able to help patients when they are most vulnerable makes my heart happy. I have always looked up to those who are wearing their stethoscopes and their cool colored scrubs. When shadowing a Nurse Practitioner in the Operating Room, I immediately fell in love with that environment. I found that I did not want to be hands on in the surgical procedure. It was through observing and being mentored by an experienced nurse anesthetist that I found that administering anesthesia was what I wanted to do. Being a Nurse Anesthetist is truly an art of medicine.

How did you get the job working at the hospital and how did you prepare for it?
Right before we started our local Certified Nurse Assistant Course in my hometown as part of my high school health occupations class, I began looking at the job board at Sarah Bush Lincoln. I started out as an Observation Partner working every weekend to gain experience before gaining my license as a Certified Nurse Assistant. I knew getting the job would be scary for me especially interviewing at a hospital. I went in with confidence and acted professionally but remembered to be myself.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned working at the hospital?
I have learned how important it is to work as a team to be able to provide the best care for each individual patient. It is very heartwarming to see how much you can mean to a patient, just by caring and being sincere.

What is the hardest thing about working 24 hours a weekend there?
One of the hardest challenges I have faced working 24 hours every weekend was missing out on plans and not seeing my family very much. I started working these shifts in February of my senior year in high school. One of the hardest days to miss out on was Fourth of July, my favorite holiday of the year. Seeing all my friends with each other celebrating the day I loved was hard, but I realized there are sacrifices you have to make as a nurse and being at work when you are needed is one of the most important roles as an employee.

What are you most looking forward to learning at Nursing School?
Since I am just starting my nursing school, I realize there will be a lot of different things that I will need to learn that I don’t even know about yet. At this point, I know I am looking forward to learning about different medications and how they interact with each other as well as how different drugs affect people with differing body types or diseases.

Picture
Photography by Alex Hoedebecke Photography

What is the most rewarding part about your time there?

Over the past seven months I have learned so much as an observation specialist. I am able to spend time with the patients who need it the most and talk with them. I have found it helpful to be available for them to talk through their problems and what is causing them to have anxiety and depression. I have learned how important it is to just listen. Helping older people and seeing a smile on their face when I leave is one of the most rewarding feelings I have experienced.

How would your friends describe you?
My friends would describe me as very outgoing, friendly, and as being reliable. I am a good friend and confidant and will be there for them any time they need me.

What do you like to do with your friends in your down time?
My friends and I like to study, watch movies, go on walks, and go shopping in our free time! You can always catch us all together doing something to meet new people and exploring new places!

What memory from this summer will you never forget?
A very special memory from this summer is the joy I experienced from going on my Senior trip with my mom and two friends. We spent a week on the beach in Florida. We made memories that will last a lifetime and spending time with my mom meant so much to me.

What is your family like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
My family is very close. We do a lot of activities together and we are interested in what each other is doing. My parents have always worked hard to provide for my sister and me and they have instilled the value of this in us. I feel I have grown to be a responsible adult and will contribute to the betterment of our society as I plan to raise my own family someday.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
On the beach reading a good book. The beach is one of my happy places! Being there makes me feel like there is no worry in the world. I can relax peacefully.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I have just started nursing school and began working in the next step in my nursing career as a care partner. I am truly excited to meet many new people and experience new aspects in the medical field. I have already made new college friends in nursing school. It is the best feeling knowing we will all being going through this together and being there through thick and thin is an experience I cannot wait to have!

What are you most looking forward to at school this year?
This year I am looking forward to helping others feel more comfortable and connected to our community through extracurricular activities. I am also looking forward to senior bonding especially because it is my last year in high school with my friends and my teammates. I am looking forward to making more memories that will last a lifetime.

What is the most interesting AP class you have taken and why?
The most interesting AP class that I have taken is Spanish because there are so many benefits to learning a new language. There is an unspoken importance to being able to connect with the world.

Tell us about your work/job and what you've learned about the general public as a result.
I have used the experience of working in a hospital as a platform for building skills of compassion, empathy and communication. Patients and family may act out in frustration in times of weakness.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
One of my strongest leadership qualities is resilience. Resilient leaders have the ability to cope with disruptive changes and adapt.

What are your friends like?
It is hard to remember what it was like before I met my best friend but now I could never imagine doing life without her. She loves me at my worst and supports me at my best and we can do everything or nothing and it feels the same.

What do you and your friends like to do together?
The simple things.

Picture
Photography by Leanna Joy Photography

How would your friends describe you?
My friends would describe me as altruistic because I lead with my heart with the best intentions to make others around me happy.

Tell us about your family and what you enjoy doing together.
We are a small family of four and the oldest of two. My little brother and I are two years apart. We are inseparable and we do everything together. My grandpa passed away a few years ago, and I have definitely been able to carry on his legacy. I look just like him.

What is your favorite family memory you will never forget?
Growing up I was definitely a papa's girl. My grandpa took every chance that he could to spend it with me. I was very fortunate to have two hardworking parents. In turn I spent a lot of time with my grandpa. Our favorite things to do were ride the horse, go to Claires and eat lunch together. My grandpa raised me to be a confident young lady who would grow up to be a self-reliant young woman. I really wanted a pink purse from Claires, but it wasn't cheap. No one wanted to buy me this purse, but my grandpa wasn't going to let me go home without it.

What do you want others to know about your health challenges and injuries?
My disorders affect me negatively every day, although it may seem like I function at 100% ability. I think that it is important to keep in mind that despite the challenges I have faced I am excelling above and beyond what most people would expect. In result of missing a lot of school, one of the biggest challenges that others like me face is being able to stay in school. It has been proven that over 40% of pots POTS and EDS patients drop out of school each year due to the toll that it takes on your body. I am defying standards.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
It would be an understatement to say that I have become quite familiar with the hospital, I did not know anything else. It wasn’t long before I got used to the beeping of my own monitors at such a young age. I have found ways to guide others that are struggling with the same things I have been through. It is safe to say that each player must accept the cards life deals him or her, but once they are in their hand, he or she alone, must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game.

Picture
Photography by Leanna Joy Photography

What else would you like to talk about?
Being a very hardworking and dedicated individual, I strive to be the best at everything I do. I have taken on the leadership role in numerous school activities including HOSA, National Honors Society, and Spanish Honors Society. It is evident that school is very important to me, although so are the relationships I have built with fellow community members.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Although I have many passions, I am most passionate about the relationships I have with my family and friends. I could talk forever about how they have impacted my life. Foremost, my best friend Maddy changed my life completely. My best friend is one of the most selfless people I have ever met, and she will do anything to make someone else happy. On the other hand, I don’t know what I would do without my brother. He is my shoulder to cry on. He has been and forever will be there for me.

How did you find your photographer, Leanna Joy Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found Leanna because she was willing to think out of the box. She is able to capture each individual's personality through their photos. When working with Leanna, I was blown away by how bubbly and enthusiastic she is. I loved that she was willing to jump right in with no questions asked.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would most likely find me at a baseball field.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am super excited to make a lot of new memories this year before I graduate high school. I would like time to slow down so I could cherish all of the moments that I get with my family and friends before it will be too late.

Picture
Photography by Shiela Cavender

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I would not say that one of the hardest things that I have ever had to overcome was losing my cousin at a young age. He was killed in a car accident the day after he turned 17. John reminded me a lot of my brother.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I have been blessed to have a supportive family who have encouraged me to reach my dreams and go after what I want. I would tell you that hard work rewards opportunity.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years I see myself living in Colorado to pursue the job of my dreams. I would like to be an athletic trainer for a major sports organization.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mom inspiring because she is the best example of someone who pushes through the hardest times. She is my biggest inspiration and my toughest critique.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that I am inspiring because I have overcome things that most young women will never understand.

Alexis Tahin

Picture

Alexis Tahin – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Alexis, a senior in high school, exceeds the definition of the word’s strength and inspiration. She is a Type 1 diabetic facing many challenges but has never let it define her. She is a servant- leader who is compassionate about community. She is a Girl Scout (13 years) and the General of their drill team, is on the varsity school drill team, volunteers for GS camps and participates in the JDRF Walks of Houston. Alexis loves quality family time and aspires to be a nurse in Pediatric Endocrinology. Her goal is to inspire young children facing similar challenges as her.
Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What do you wish people knew about Type 1 diabetes?
I wish people knew that Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. In this condition, the pancreas makes little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone the body uses to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy. Different factors, such as genetics and some viruses, may cause type 1 diabetes. And, at present, there is no cure.

What challenges has it created for you, and how do you get around them?
Being a dancer with diabetes can be challenging. The muscle strain and excessive pressure on my feet can quickly become a problem if not watched carefully. It just takes a little extra care and preparation to ensure my body remains in good health and my blood sugar is within safe parameters. I prepare healthy snacks, drink water, rest, regularly monitor my glucose levels and carefully inspect my feet for any possible blisters or calluses that could potentially get infected.

How would you describe yourself as a servant-leader?
A servant leader is a leadership style and philosophy that prioritizes the growth and well-being of others. I am a Girl Scout and recently became The General on their drill team. As their General I demonstrate empathy, listening, stewardship and commitment to the personal growth of each member of my team. I love guiding and encouraging them to be successful towards our end goal- to be a better more unified team.

What do you love most about your community?
I always get excited when I’m asked to talk about my “Klein Strong” community. From its rich German history to its amazing school district, its neighborhoods of character, and commitment to support its people, Klein, TX is and will forever be home. If you could think of a place that you feel the most peace and at- home, Klein, TX is it. There isn’t a single stranger in this town and the opportunities are endless. The support the people in this community have for one another is like no other. We are Klein Strong!

How did you find your photographer, Angie Read Photography?
I found Angie Read Photography through a referral from a teammate on my school drill team and additionally, on Facebook.

What was your experience like?
I have loved working with Angie. She is friendly, personable, understanding, encouraging, timely and enthusiastic for each of her girls and their successes.

What did you love most about it?
I fell in love with all the photo opportunities and experiences, team building outings, and the various community service projects she offers.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

Tell us about the Girl Scouts and something you've done in it that you are proud of.

In my 13 years as a Girl Scout, I have done many things that I’m proud of but the one thing that stands out and I’m most proud of, is earning my Silver Award by designing, purchasing, and building a sustainable Green House for the community at a local church.

When you volunteer for the camps, what is your favorite thing to do?
I love volunteering at camps! My most favorite thing to do is mentor and be a role model for young girls. I love teaching them, creating with them, singing, dancing, and most of all watching them have fun. It is most rewarding watching them grow and learn and know that I played a small part in their success.

What does it mean to you to be a leader in this capacity?
As a passionate teen leader, I want to encourage each girl to explore the unknown, guide them with purpose, and be their advocate. I want to pioneer their adventures and celebrate each of their successes.

What does it mean to the General of your drill team? What roles and responsibilities does this entail?
As a General of the Girls Scouts Drill Team, I must be supportive. I am committed to being an effective leader by understanding each of my girl’s needs, being timely, empathetic, organized and focused. While supporting each of my teammates and their goals, it is important to me to lead by example. It is essential that I be organized and ethical. I am determined and focused to ensure that each girl on my team succeeds towards their personal goals and the teams’ goals.

What is your drill team like? Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
My two drill teams are disciplined, inclusive and fun! Each of them slightly differs on where I fit in. On one team I am the General, leading the team and on the other I am a line member supporting the team. Drill team is something that I never thought I needed but I have learned otherwise. By being part of drill team, I have learned how to better connect with my peers I have now become an ambassador for my student body.

Why is the JDRF Walk of Houston important to you?

The JDRF Walk is near and dear to my heart because it raises awareness and is dedicated to funding the research to finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. It is a community of support that comes together to honor, celebrate and support of all those who battle this horrible auto-immune disease.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
I hope the tradition of family meals together never end. We live in a very fast-paced society and having dinner together centers me.

What are you doing now to prepare in your role as a nurse in Pediatric Endocrinology?
Currently, I am taking medical courses in high school to earn two different certifications to prepare for my journey towards becoming a nurse in Pediatric Endocrinology.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very compassionate, extremely loyal, dedicated, and versatile. I love to participate in numerous activities and clubs and strive for excellence in everything I do. Some of the activities I excel in, and others are for the mere fun of it. I am gentle, kind, a bit timid and empathetic. I was a member of National Junior Honor Society, involved in summer swim team and middle school swim team. I also ran cross-country, played the violin in orchestra and am currently a representative of Student Council, Key Club and B.E.S.T. (Bringing Exceptional Students Together)

What else would you like to talk about?
I was born Turkish-American. My father is from Sinop, Turkey and is an inspiration to me. Coming to the United States with almost nothing and only speaking Turkish, he has succeeded all obstacles with hard work and dedication- traits I have learned greatly from. Turkish culture and traditions are important to me. I cherish memories of traveling to Turkey with each visit. Despite being challenging and difficult, I enjoy language- barrier family conversations, visiting Turkish historical sites, listening to traditional Turkish music and eating Turkish cuisine. These obstacles center me and attribute to who I am today- an inspired Turkish-American.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am extremely passionate about Diabetes and the impact it has on the human body. The vast majority don’t even know what it is or the difference between the different types. I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes at age seven and have had to educate myself about the disease, learn discipline and be responsible. I am constantly educating myself and others on this dreaded disease from, what causes diabetes, the different types, food choices, insulins, A1C blood tests, the importance of getting regular check-ups, and the constant research that is being done to cure is horrible auto immune disease?

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?

Honestly, if I had nothing to do, which is very rare and all day to do it, I would be nuzzled in my bed reading a good book and listening to music while cuddling with my dog.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
As a senior in high school, I am excited for graduation day. I am looking forward to pursuing a higher education at the University level after graduation.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I’ve ever had to accomplish was trying out for the Varsity Drill Team at my High School. I practiced the tryout routine all day until my feet blistered and bled. Then, I practiced some more. I was determined.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to anyone would be to work hard for everything and to never give up. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I hope to be graduating from a university with a bachelor’s degree.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
A favorite pastime that wasn’t in my nomination is spending time with my older brother, Daniel. He is 6 years older than me and is my best friend. We loved hanging out together talking about anything.

3 Things on your bucket list
I don’t have a bucket list. I live life to the fullest whatever comes my way.

What does it mean to be a part of the Healthcare and Clinical Science at school?
Healthcare and Clinical Science is my second course in Health Science. As students, we get to participate in shadowing experiences in healthcare facilities. Once I finish this class, I'll be trained to work as an entry level assistant in various health occupations. I'll also be certified in CPR at a Healthcare Provider level. This helps students like me to be readily accepted into a nursing program.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned so far?
Last year, we got to volunteer at a local nursing home. It was a wonderful experience getting to know the residents. I learned how to be patient and understanding of people's differences. I highly suggest everyone volunteer at one of your local nursing homes. You'll learn so much from the experience.

What is HOSA and why do you love being a part of this group?
HOSA is a student led organization for future Health Professionals. It prepares students to enter the healthcare field. HOSA members get to meet at the International Leadership Conference where competitive events and sessions are held. It gives students like me the opportunity to be a part of a group of future leaders in healthcare.

What is a favorite accomplishment from this group?
We all have one goal. Help others and make a difference.

Ole Miss is listed as one of the top best colleges for Nursing. It's always been my dream to attend Ole Miss. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be an Ole Miss Rebel.

What are you most looking forward to going there for?
The experiences and meeting new people. I'm ready to start my next chapter in life. It's going to be a lot of hard work but I'm ready for the challenge.

Tell us about your church and why it's a perfect fit for you.
Venture Church is such a welcoming, kind place. They want everyone who attends to feel included. It's like one big family. Everyone is there to help and support each other.

What do you wish others knew about your church/religion?
Putting God first is the most important decision you can make in life. Knowing you have God in your heart and knowing you have eternal life brings a peace I cannot describe. It brings me incredible joy when I see someone accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. It's life changing.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My family is definitely unique. We love to spend time together. On any given weekend you will find us all piled up at my Nana's house eating good home cooked food and playing board games. We all love to laugh and have fun.

What is a favorite family memory or vacation you will never forget?
Most of my unforgettable memories are holidays. Our family goes all out every holiday. It's all about spending as much time together as possible. We've had a lot of loss in our family so there's an understanding there that family time is high on the priority list, and you better be at every event.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I'm very excited about a future in the medical field. Helping others is something that motivates me to become successful in life. I'm very passionate about animals and I have a four-year-old Boston Terrier named Oscar. I have a very creative side. I love to draw and paint in my spare time.

What else would you like to talk about?
I hope to become a Registered Nurse and want to work specifically in Labor and Delivery. Being a part of that special moment for a mother and newborn will be so rewarding. Knowing I can be there during such an important time in someone's life, knowing that I helped, will be such a big accomplishment. My Healthcare and Clinical Science class is guiding me to the career I've always wanted. I'm very excited to see what we learn next.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
My faith is extremely important to me. It's been instilled in me since I was young to always put God first. I'm a member of Venture church in my town. Attending church and being present is definitely priority in my life. Nothing I've accomplished in life would be possible if it weren't for God.

Who is your photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?

My mom was my photographer, and she is always snapping pictures of us. She is very passionate about photography and has taught us it's important to capture all our moments in life. She loves to make taking pictures exciting and fun. It's always been something we hold memorable.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I know this doesn't sound interesting but my bed. I'm either reading or sleeping!

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Graduation! I'm ready for the next chapter. I'm ready to start college and begin the steps towards my career. I can't wait to be that person that made a difference in someone's life.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
We recently moved last year after being in the same school district for 10 years. It was a positive move but hard to get used to the new environment. One day at a time!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
You'll go far with a lot of hard work and a lot of praying! Keep your faith in God.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be working at a hospital of my choice as an RN in Labor and Delivery.

What specifically do you want to do in healthcare?

The career that I plan on pursuing in healthcare is to get my bachelor’s in radiology.

What are you doing now to help reach that goal?
Right now what I am doing to pursue my future in healthcare is working towards my associates degree at a junior college. Getting my associates degree will allow me to go into my four year degree with a year done as well as getting all of my pre-requisites. This is something that I find crazy as I will graduate from a junior college with my associates degree and will receive my high school diploma all in the same month!

What do you do in FFA and what do you love most about it?
In FFA I am my chapter's vice president and participate in many competitions that my chapter goes to. I also really enjoy our fun hangouts we have!

If you were trying to get someone else to join FFA, what would you tell them that you've done that is so fun/rewarding?
If I was trying to get someone else to join FFA I would tell them that it is so much fun because you get to hang out with your friends and other students from other schools. I will tell them that something that is so rewarding to me is all the friendships I have made throughout my past five years in FFA.

Tell us about your basketball career.
I have been playing basketball since I was really little, and it has always meant a lot to me. Now I am enjoying the time I have left and the relationships that I have made in the past 10+ years of my basketball career. I am very grateful and excited for this last year surrounded by fun people.

What is your team like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My team holds a really special bond as my teammates are my best friends. My teammates are some that have played with me since we were little. A place on the basketball court that I feel like I stand out is leadership, I feel as though this role comes with my position.

The most rewarding part of being class president is knowing that I can make a difference in my class and allowing everyone’s voices to be heard.

See You at the Pole is a gathering that I hold for students at my school. At this gathering we worship and pray together. I love organizing this because I can spread God’s word through my small community and it makes me really happy to feel all of the support I get!

Ava Ackerman – Michigan
Nomination & Photography by @Flairseniorphotos
Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Ava is a dedicated competitive dancer and balances her social life, school studies and supportive family with dance! She stays busy traveling and even modeling for dance brands. She has been our customer since she was five and we have had the pleasure watching her grow to love the camera and become a beautiful young woman.

Picture

Tell us about your dance career.
I started dancing at the age of three when my mom placed me in my first class. However, because I was too young to enjoy what was going on, my mom pulled me out. Around the age of eleven I went to my first ever ballet performance of the Nutcracker. From there on out I knew I wanted to be a dancer. I later enrolled in classes training at many different schools and participating in many performances. When my sophomore year of high school came, I decided to join my school's dance team which I have been doing for three years now.

What dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
Over my career, I have been able to study many different styles of dance from classical ballet all the way to hip hop. The styles I study currently are contemporary along with pom, jazz and hip hop which I get through my dance team. To pick a “favorite” style is very hard since every style is unique and makes you express yourself differently! I love how at one point I can be soft and airy during contemporary then the next moment be sharp and grounded in hip hop.

What has your favorite dance competition been?
Over the years, I have been able to attend a competition called Youth American Grand Prix, otherwise known as YAGP. This year will be my fourth year attending. What makes this competition stand out from others is the everlasting impact it can cause if one places. Unlike other local competitions, YAGP is a prestige organization that takes dancers from around the world and helps turn them into professionals. It is a very high stress situation however the experiences you get from it are worth the stress! You also get to take master classes with professional teachers and learn about their dance career.

If you could dance on any dance tv show, which would it be and why?
If I could dance for any tv show, I would definitely have to choose Dancing With the Stars. During my free time, I enjoy watching the dancers on the show as they are super inspiring and talented. It was this show that made me want to start ballroom dancing and I absolutely love it! Although I don’t take ballroom classes frequently, if I could choose to perform one style on the show, it would be either swing, salsa or waltz. Like every Latin style of dance, I would love to wear the long fringed dresses, however any ballroom competition “outfit” is simply beautiful.

What is it like modeling for dance brands? How did you get started in that and what do you love most about it?
Modeling for dance brands has been an absolute dream! Ever since I was young, I’ve always wanted to be a model, actor, and a dancer. Since I am not tall enough to model for huge runways, dance modeling has given me an opportunity to still “submerge” into that atmosphere. I started modeling for a brand called Andrea Carola Apparel last year during my junior year of high school. I applied for one of their open model calls and got accepted to model a new set which they were launching. The experience couldn’t have gone any better! I have made so many cherished memories from it.

What are some of the things you like to do in your social life?
During my free time I love to hang out with the people closest to me! Whether those people are friends who I’ve grown up with or family members who I’ve experienced every aspect of my life with. I also loved to be around my pets as they are always the ones making me happy after a long day. I absolutely adore my two dogs, Kinsley and Russel, and my cats Oscar and Oliver. During the school year you can always find me dancing at football games or volunteering in the children’s room at church!

How would your friends describe you?
When asked, my friends describe me as someone who is “hardworking and knows what she wants”. I am very determined and will fight for what I want. I don’t let others stop me from working to achieve my goals. If you know me, you may know that I am kind hearted, funny to be around, and always someone who can provide a listening ear when needed. My friends also know that I avoid behaviors and situations that are unheathy; unless we are talking about peanut butter cup ice cream:)

Picture

What else would you like to talk about?

I would love to talk about the experiences dance has provided me. When I was just thirteen years old, I was able to train in Chicago for five weeks. A year later when I was fourteen I went and trained in Tampa for three weeks. I later got a dance scholarship to New York in which I was able to meet, and take classes with, the Rockettes, take a masters class with Lane Napper, watch a few broadway shows and met the cast, etc. I am now also working with Andrea Carola Apparel in which I have had the opportunity to model for!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Although there are many things I would love to talk about, my friends and family would agree that dance is my life. Over the years, I have been truly blessed by the opportunities that dance has given me. I absolutely love sharing my experiences with those who ask providing an example that hard work pays off!

How did you find your photographer, @Flairseniorphotos? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My family moved to Michigan from Indiana when I was very young. At the time my parents were looking for a photographer in which we could update our family photos. My mom came across Jen, Flair Photos, and instantly fell in love. She was the only photographer in my area that got my siblings and I to smile in our photos. I have known her since I was five and have grown up taking photos with her! It is bittersweet to finally finish my photo journey with her.

What are you most looking forward to about school this year?
This school year I am mostly looking forward to all of the opportunities made available for senior bonding, since this is our last year together. Senior year will move fast, and I hope to gain many positive memories to take with me on my college journey. I look forward to dancing with my teammates at our football games and competitions, to our senior retreat, and many other events. Having spent most of my life in dance, I also look forward to this year’s statewide and National level competitions. What excites me most about this year is the possibilities that it offers!

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I’ve been blessed by my supportive family that has encouraged me to reach for my dreams. I’m learning to take chances to achieve goals that I might not have otherwise attempted. I’m learning that hard work and perseverance promotes opportunity. I hope to leave a legacy that inspires others to dare to achieve great things, and to not allow small failures to define them. I hope that my path, when viewed by others, will light in a way that inspires.

Picture

What is your family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I’m from a family of five where I’m the second of three children. Luckily for me, I am stuck between two boys! Although I have always wanted a sister, there have been a lot of perks with being an only daughter. For starters, everyone knows I am my dads “favorite” daughter. I also get to go on a lot of outings with my mom. Some say I look a lot like my aunt when I was her age and that I should’ve been her daughter, however I looked a lot like my dad when I was younger, and still do today.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
There are so many wonderful memories I have made over the years that I will always cherish, a couple of memories though in particular will forever have my heart. When I was younger my grandma would do something called “Camp Grandma”. During the week my cousins and I would stay at her beautiful house in traverse and have days filled with countless memories. To count how good we’ve been at camp, my grandma had a chart on which stickers would be added to my cousins and my name. We had so much fun helping each other cook and fight with water balloons!!

Issue 71 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kaylei is the head cheer captain at Fossil Ridge High and has won 3 UIL state titles and 1 UCA national title with her team. She was elected to the super intendant council, helps with the special needs cheer team at school, and placed at the UIL debate tournament this year. By attending the super intendant council meetings, she was able to share her point of view with representatives to be able to help with district decisions. She is hoping to continue to inspire others throughout college!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I could go on and on about cheerleading. I have been in cheer since I was 5, meaning I have been cheering for 12 years. Cheer has always been a part of my life and it is the one thing I have stayed committed to. It fuels me with determination. I love cheer because I was able to make life long relationships whether it’s my teammates or my coaches.

Why do you love helping with the special needs cheer team at your school?
I love helping with the special needs cheer team because I like to see the joy and excitement of each athlete when they get to be themselves doing things any other person would get to do.

Tell us about your cheer life.
I started cheer when I was just 5 years old. I remember trying out gymnastics and dance first but didn’t like either one, then one day decided that I would try cheer. Out of all 12 years that I have been cheering for, I have 9 years of all star cheer experience and 3 years (and counting) of high school coed game day experience.

What do you love most about cheering and your cheer team?
My favorite thing about cheering with my team is how much fun we all have together whether it’s at practice, a football game, or a competition, but when it comes down to it, we know how to lock in.

What was it like competing and winning so many times?
Every year we have to compete with ourselves from the previous year to stay on top because after each win, it becomes two times harder to defend our title.

How did you find your photographer, CDP Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through my aunt, who booked her for our family Christmas photos in 2020. My experience with Jordan has been amazing. She has taken me to beautiful places for shoots and made me feel so comfortable during them. I don’t see Jordan as just my photographer but also as my mentor because she is someone I look up to and greatly appreciate.

Picture

What does it mean to you to be elected to the super intendant council?
Being elected to the super intendant council makes me feel like my school district cares about how students view school, and it shows that we (the student body) are finally being heard.

What did you debate at the UIL debate tournament and how did you feel about the process and outcome?
I competed in prose and poetry and performed a single selection about adoption. Going into the competition I felt nervous because my selection was something personal to me and I didn’t want to mess it up, especially it being my first time competing. Overall, I am happy with my placement and performed to the best of my ability.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I feel that growing up as an adopted child has allowed me to be open and be understanding of others because you can never judge someone by how they appear. I want to help others who may feel embarrassed about being adopted to embrace it because they are not alone!

What else would you like to talk about?
I also have two moms who are married. Growing up with gay moms on top of being adopted was a bit hard because I always felt embarrassed to have friends come over, but I have learned to be more open about it because there is no such thing as a “normal family”.

What is your family like and what do appreciate most about being a part of it?
My family isn’t the average family and they definitely have their quirks but that’s what I love about them. I appreciate how much love and support I get from each person, even during rough patches.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
Every Christmas eve, my cousins, my siblings and I all get matching Christmas pajamas and wear them to bed that night and when we open our gifts Christmas morning. This is a family tradition I hope to pass down to my kids in the future.

Picture
Photography by CDP Photography

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would most likely be at the mall because I love to go out and shop for things, especially clothes. One of my favorite things is being able to dress myself up, whether it’s for a casual day out or a formal dinner party.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Currently, we are starting football season which means homecoming is soon. I am running for homecoming court and get to find out if I made it soon. If I am lucky enough to make court, that means I get to ride on my own float for the homecoming parade, and I get to walk the field at our homecoming game.

She is currently working to receive her Certified Nursing Assistant licensure so that she can get to know and help people while giving back to her community. Her empathetic and optimistic nature makes her a great candidate for the field. Her grandma, a retired RN, is Natalie’s inspiration. Her grandmother and family have taught her the importance of practicing respect and integrity in her work and studies. These traits along with kindness and compassion make Natalie an inspiring teen.

What lead you to want to become a Registered Nurse?

I was looking for a career path that would help people in a direct and meaningful way. After COVID, I found that the ones who had really helped, arguably, the most were healthcare workers. They are a source of inspiration and I want to be just like them.

What does working towards your Certified Nursing Assistant Licensure entail?
Working towards my CNA means many months’ worth of anatomy, patient caregiving, and first aid courses. After completing these, future Nursing Assistants will be tested on both the knowledge and skills that they've learned.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned in nursing?
I don't know yet, my classes haven't begun, but I'm excited to find out!

What else has your grandmother taught you about nursing?
My grandma has taught me the difficulty of the career. She tells stories of the night shift and all the hardships she encountered working in a hospital, all the different people she's met over the years. But she has also told me that it is rewarding and fulfilling.

What is your family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
My family is amazing, and I am so incredibly grateful for them. My parents are very easy to talk to and have made a great life for me. My little brother and I also get along but have very different personalities. Me and my family tend to do our own things on weekdays with work, school, and friends but we usually take time to kayak, watch movies, or talk around the bonfire together on the weekends.

What is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
Every year, my family plans a week long road trip and camping trip in the summer to a different state. This year, we went to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and got to hike around the Great Smoky Mountains! Summer camping trips are a tradition that we've had since I was little and that I'd love to continue with my future family.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
As a teenager who has a part-time job in addition to taking extra classes outside of high school, I still put my all into everything I do. I still find time for art and I've been making handmade birthday cards for my friends and family since I was in elementary school.

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
My friend group is great! We have been hanging out alot this summer and having sleepovers every other week. At these sleepovers, we like to go out and buy snacks and then watch movies and talk together.

What is a memory with your friends you'll never forget?
A memory I'll never forget is this year's prom. I went with a group of friends and my boyfriend, and it was a lot of fun! It was my first prom and I loved getting all dressed up and taking pictures with everyone. After the dance itself, we went to Perkins and sat around the table and ordered a bunch of food. We were there for a while just chatting and laughing late at night.

What else would you like to talk about?
My 9th grade environmental science teacher, Mr. Jones, really inspired my passion for biology and science. He taught my class during online learning and COVID but still made it engaging and very interesting. It sparked my love of science and now I'm taking a college level biology course that I could not be more excited for!

What do you love learning most about in biology?
I love learning about cells. I think it's interesting how they each have a job and that the human brain cannot comprehend just how many cells exist in just the tip of a finger.

How do you think COVID shaped you as a person?
I think that COVID and being in lockdown for as long as Minnesota was taught me how to be more independent. Before, I could rely on groupwork during difficult schoolwork. But while in isolation, I learned to use my own knowledge and resources. COVID also made it easier to ask for help because of the private Zoom chatrooms where I could talk to my teachers one-on-one. In a social aspect, COVID taught me resilience because I had to find new ways to talk to my friends and have fun. I found myself doing more artsy stuff things in my free time and using social media to connect with people.

Picture
Photography by Natalie

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?

I love history and learning about nature! I specifically like to talk about world history and connecting it to current events and the history being made in my lifetime. I also ask my dad a lot of questions about nature when we fish, camp, and hike together. It creates fun conversations about biology and how everything is connected which I find very interesting.

How did you find your photographer, Erinn Letts Photos? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer, Erinn Letts, through my elementary school, her children attended the same one! She is very involved in the school district and takes a lot of senior photos for my high school. My experience was great!! I loved how positive and bubbly she was, she made me feel more confident in my poses and smile. The pictures turned out so amazing!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You would probably find me either painting or at the thrift store. Painting at home while listening to music is one of my favorite ways to relax and rewind after a busy week. There's a thrift store near my house that I like to go to with friends. Me and my boyfriend are actually going later today as I'm writing this! Thrifting is nice because it takes some effort and time to find good clothing and it helps the environment to shop second hand.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
The Minnesota State Fair is coming up! I'm going to be visiting and working for it this year and it's always a good time. I'm also excited for fall, it's my favorite season! I love the clothes, the weather, and being able to see friends at school again.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Last May, I took the AP Literature and Composition Test and it was the most difficult exam I've taken so far. I got a 4/5 by studying and refining my writing skills through the school year.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard in school and focus on your interests. Pursue what makes you happy and always keep an optimistic outlook.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I'll hopefully be almost finished with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and living the college life. I would live to go to a college out of state and possibly study abroad.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I am a little bit of a music nerd. I listen to everything from heavy metal to bedroom pop and I love learning about my favorite artists and their stories.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can make a trifold with my tongue!

3 Things on your bucket list
- Travel outside of the country
- Dye my hair dark red
- See Phoebe Bridgers in concert

Andrea Foster – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Twisted Arrow Photography
Issue 70 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Andrea Foster started a pet-sitting business, Andrea's Paws and Claws, at the age of 14. As a result, she’s become the exclusive neighborhood pet-sitter serving over 50 families thus far. Andrea initiated her business to purchase a quality camera as she aspires to become a professional photographer. Her photography journey started when she joined the yearbook staff as a freshman. She simultaneously received an academic award for her photography in school and recognitions in photography camps hosted by the University of Texas!

Tell us about your business and what you love so much about it.
I love that I get to run my business with my mom. I love that it is something we can do together. We both love animals and taking care of so many different types of pets makes my heart happy. I also love how we can bring many different families comfort knowing their pet is safe and well cared for while they’re away. It’s been a great learning experience.

What was the hardest part of getting it going, and where are you at with it now?
The hardest part of starting my business was getting my name out in the neighborhood and finding clients. People worry about letting new people inside their home and trusting the care of their pets with a teenager. My mom shared my story and some neighbors took a chance on me. They shared their reviews and recommended me to other neighbors which has led to returning and new clients.

What do you wish others knew about running a business?
Running a business isn’t as easy as it seems. Luckily, my mom helps me with advertising my business. She posts on the neighborhood facebook page and even created a group to refer people interested in seeing pictures and reviews of pets I’ve cared for. It’s also hard having motivation to work sometimes, especially in the early mornings or after long days of school. I would tell others that you have to find creative ways to build your business and push through the tough times and get to work.

How did you find your photographer, Twisted Arrow Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My mom saw some Senior pictures of a few graduating friends on social media. Lorry was friends with several people in our neighborhood and they highly recommended her. Since we both really liked her style of photos, my mom asked her to photograph my Sweet 16 photos. She was really nice and made me feel very comfortable during the photoshoot by talking about why I loved photography. She even gave me tips on how I can improve my own personal work and said that I can email her with questions on cameras and different apps for editing.

What kind of photographer would you like to be and why?
I’m still learning photography, so I am still trying as many types of techniques as I can. But if I had to choose now, I would strongly consider sports or nature photography. Both are very different, but both are very fun. Sports photography is challenging, but it gives me a rush of adrenaline running around the field and stopping action with a single click. With nature photography, it’s calming and relaxing. I can capture beauty and peace with one frame.

We'd love for you to send us a favorite image you've taken and tell us the story behind it.
I have a deep love for the moon. It's very hard to take a clearly detailed picture of the moon. This picture was taken shortly after sunset because it is still light enough where the moon isn't too bright but dark enough to beautifully shows the moon's craters while also being framed by a nearby tree.

What do you do in the yearbook staff?
I’ve been the photographer on the yearbook staff since I was a freshman. I go to most of the school events such as football games, baseball games, pep rallies, performances, etc. I take photos for the yearbook staff to put in the school newspaper and yearbook.

What leadership roles have you had?
While I was a part of taekwondo, I was in their leadership program. I would help teach the “Tiny Tigers” class which was for younger kids. I would help them with their forms, weapons, as well as teach them new techniques and how to fix or improve different moves. I also help a lot with my high school choir program. As the Choir Historian, I am in charge of taking our choir’s photos/ videos and posting on our social media accounts such as Instagram and Facebook.

What is your best leadership quality?
My best leadership quality is that I am very respectful. Whether I am interacting with little kids, students, or adults, I make sure to treat them with respect and kindness in the way I would like it received. I feel it’s very important to be an example and present that respectful leadership.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career until I started high school. My dad was in the military, and we moved around a lot. I was born in Alaska and we moved to five different states by the time I was 10 years old. It was hard to make friends and I didn’t find anything I really loved to do. I still struggle being shy, but I feel like photography has taken me out of my comfort zone and helped me in more ways than just knowing what I want to do when I grow up.

What advice do you have for other kids who are preparing for a move and all the changes that go with it?
I think that kids that are moving should keep an open mind while preparing for that huge change. I would encourage them to step out of their comfort zone to find new opportunities and positive changes. It’s difficult to try new things that come with moving, like making friends. Having an open mind and good attitude will make a huge difference in the experience.

What else would you like to talk about?

I’m a member of the GeoForce Academy which is fully paid and sponsored by the University of Texas. I applied in 8th grade and was accepted to participate in geoscience field trips each summer throughout my high school years. The first year was the Texas coastline, but it was virtual due to Covid. The second year we visited Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. This year we went to Oregon and Washington. Next year we will stay at UT and work with professors on a research project. When it’s done, it is presented university students, scientists, staff, and parents.

What do you do on these trips?
Myself and other students of the GeoForce academy have a very busy schedule. We travel quite a bit throughout the week as we go places to better understand the different details of geosciences of the area. We also have lectures and even do experiments about the activities we did that day. It’s been an amazing experience to hike in so many national parks and learn about the variety of environments.

What is a favorite memory from one of these trips?
These trips happen every year during my birthday. I think the best memory yet was on the last trip where we were on Mount Hood, Oregon playing in the snow. On that day, I was playfully attacked with snowballs as a birthday joke. These trips have all become great memories because of all the friends I’ve made. These students all come from different schools, but we keep in contact almost daily. I couldn’t ask for better people to spend my birthday week with every summer.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned so far from these trips?
I learned a lot in Oregon and Washington, especially when we visited Mt Hood, Mt Saint Helens, and Mt Rainier. The most interesting thing I’ve learned is that the Pacific Northwest has much more explosive volcanoes than Hawaii. This is due to the type of volcano and amount of silica in the rocks of the two different types of volcano.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I love photography and can talk about it all the time. I've done photoshoots with so many kinds of school sports, different kinds of student performances, and candid shots - just to name a few. I’ve also experimented on my own with landscapes and portraits. Photography has opened a lot of opportunities for me like attending university events, meeting important people, and having my photos featured in different places at school and conferences. I’ve learned so much already and I’m excited about all the things that I still have yet to learn.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
On a day with nothing to do, you can find me trying new photos with my camera or spending my day with friends. Those are my two favorite things to do, and if I can combine them together, that’s a great memory for me.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am very excited to start my junior year and what direction this new journey will take. I hope I’ll improve as a person, not just a student and photographer. I am just anxious about the overall possibility of how the year will progress.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I am a second degree blackbelt in Taekwondo.

Avery Knight – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Heidi Knight Photography
Issue 70 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Avery's unwavering pursuit of excellence and self-motivation inspires me. Since 7th grade, she aimed to be a HS marching band drum major. Without prompting, she diligently practiced the saxophone, achieving success in competitions. Avery also dedicates her free time to playing with the Wimberley Valley Big Band. Now, as a junior, she has realized her dream of becoming a drum major! Avery's self-discipline, self-confidence, and dedication to her dreams are inspiring. Additionally, as a National Honor Society member, she dreams of joining the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and pursuing a career in law.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I volunteer for local community charities for various clubs and non-profits such as NHS, Leo Club, Austin Fire Department, and local businesses. I manage the social media content for the Wimberley High School Band's account as well as my saxophone's section account.

What else would you like to talk about?
I have 2 cats, Junebug & July, I love to bake, I love traveling, I love spending time at the lake, I love that my mom is a professional photographer because my sister and I always have new beautiful photos and we can take any new photoshoot ideas to her and she will make them happen. My older sister is my very best friend.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Right now, band is my favorite activity and the thing I love to talk about. I love managing their social media accounts, I love the friendships, I love the leadership opportunities, and all the fun we have together. Band is so much more than an activity, it is a community and sort of a way of life.

How did you find your photographer, Heidi Knight Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My photographer is my mom. She let my sister and me rent dresses from Utah Gowns (found on Instagram) and took photos of us all dressed up on our vacation to Navarre, Florida this summer. We got up extra early to catch the sunrise on the beach and posed for about 20 minutes. It was fun, easy, and I LOVE the photos! How will I ever top this for my senior photoshoot next year? To be determined... but I know we'll find a way.

Tell us about your dance career and what you love most about it.
I have been dancing since I was 4 years old and have been a part of the competitive dance team since 5th grade. Since I spend a lot of my time at the dance studio, what I love most about it is the friendships I have made throughout the years. Many of us have danced together our whole dance career.

What dances do you study? Which is your favorite and why?
I study a lot of different styles of dance. The classes I take throughout the week are ballet, tap, jazz, and contemporary. In addition to competing dances in these genres, we have additional dances in hip hop, lyrical, and musical theater. My favorite style of dance is contemporary because when you're able to flow and connect with music it has the best feeling to it.

What has been your favorite dance competition?
My favorite dance competition would be the nationals my studio goes to. It’s a convention called LA Dance Magic and it takes place in California. It’s fun being able to travel with your team and all hangout together in another state. This past dance season we had 6 group dances, and I also had 2 solos.

What do you love best about being on the cheer team?
What I love most about being on the cheer team is going to games and being able to cheer for our school. I love football games the most, especially our homecoming game, because having school spirit is always so fun.

What is a favorite memory with your cheer team?
My favorite memory with my cheer team is going to camp. Every year we go to Dallas for our cheer camp. It really bonds our team together for the upcoming year, and I have so much fun with my teammates. This past year was also great as I competed for and made All-American at my UCA Cheer Camp!

How did you find your photographer, Angie Read Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer Angie through my sister. My sister graduated high school in 2022 and was a part of Angie's Power Team, and also was part of Inspiring Teens. Ever since then I knew I wanted to have Angie as my senior photographer!

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would say my leadership style is being an encourager. I love being able to help my teammates whenever someone needs a friend to listen, or needs clarification on something. I also love being creative and doing fun things for the team, like making signs for athletic events, or team building activities for my team.

What is your strongest leadership skill?
I think my strongest leadership skill is being able to go with the flow. I have a laid back personality and when things don’t go the right way I don’t stress out and I make new decisions quickly.

What is your role as spirit Leader?
My role as spirit leader is to help keep up school spirit. We do things like making spirit gifts, coming up with fun spirit themes for game day, and team bonding. My role involves a lot of creativity and spirit.

What has been your favorite service project in the NHS?
My favorite service project for the NHS so far has been helping out at the Ironman. I was able to volunteer with one of my friends for 4 hours and we both had so much fun cheering competitors and passing out water and food to them. It was so inspiring to watch the athletes!

What is Junior Guild and what do you do in it?
Junior Guild is a mother-daughter program that is focused on community service. We volunteer with a number of philanthropies in our community and do projects along with some other fun events, like our annual Senior Fashion Show, where we get to model and walk the runway to raise money for charities we work with.

What do you love about being the Historian?
One of the things I do as Historian for Junior Guild is the yearbook. I love how throughout the year I collect photos and get to make a yearbook of all the memories made. I get to see how much impact all the members have on our community.

How else are you active in your community?
I find out about a lot of community opportunities through Junior Guild and National Honor Society. One of my favorites was helping take care of the cats up for adoption, but I’ve also really enjoyed other non-profit community activities, like working at a dog shelter, helping kids at art camp, and ushering in fine arts performances.

Picture
Photography by Brianna Jones

What have you learned about the general public working at Chill?
Chill is a really popular milkshake and waffle bar. Some things I’ve learned about the general public working at Chill is customer service. I learned how important it is to have satisfied customers and that communication is key when talking to customers. Chill does a great job at that as they were voted the #1 best milkshake in Texas by USA Today, and the #6 best milkshakes in the country by Travel & Leisure Magazine!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Something inspiring about me is that for everything I do, I put my one hundred percent effort into it! Anyone who knows me can say I am one of the hardest workers they know. I juggle a lot between dance, cheer, work, school, and service, but it has taught me the importance of working hard with each thing I do.

What else would you like to talk about?
One thing I would like to talk about is living life to your fullest potential. Even though life can get stressful and scary sometimes eventually later on in life you'll see yourself on the better side of it. Just live for the good and fun moments in life!

Picture
Photography by Brianna Jones

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Something I feel passionate about is dance, as I have been doing it since the age of four. It has become a big part of my life and has shaped me into the person I am now. I have done every style of dance and continue to learn more about it every day! As I am looking into colleges I am looking into dance teams and hope I will be able to continue dancing!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
Since I am involved in a lot of activities, whenever I actually get free moments I like to relax and watch tv. If I had nothing to do all day you would probably find me at my house in bed or on a couch, as I never seem to have the time to do that these days.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
Up next for me is thinking about college and what I want to major in. I just went on my first college tour and college applications are just opening up. I’m super excited to be able to start making big decisions for what I have up next in my life.

Kennedy Reid – Georgia
Nomination by Kerri Reid

Nomination: Kennedy Reid is an inspiring filmmaker who uses her talents to highlight important teen and community issues. She is the only African-American senior Film major at Savannah Arts Academy (SAA); an internationally recognized Quarter-Finalist Award recipient in the Best Documentary category at the Student World Impact Student Film Festival and Northwood Film Festival Winner for Tabula Rasa: A Fresh Start. Kennedy is a multi-year winner of both the Wells Fargo Junior Stock Market Game and Future Business Leaders of America Regional competitions. She’s a member of the SAA Filmmaker’s Society; two National Honor Societies and a committed community volunteer.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Kennedy strives to share exciting and thought-provoking stories with her peers and community. As the only student to direct two short films in succession at Savannah Arts Academy in 2023, she co-directed the award-winning documentary, “Tabula Rasa: A Fresh Start” which recently received the Quarter-Finalist Award for Best Documentary in the Student World Impact Film Festival (selected from over 13,868 storytellers representing 120 countries). Kennedy also wrote, directed, and produced “Dean’s List”, a sci-fi short film that creatively discusses social acceptance, academic burnout, and the price of conformity while also providing commentary on the American education system.

What would you most like to talk about in your interview?
I would love to be able to talk about my films and share a fresh perspective on what it's like to be arising filmmaker in the 21st century.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
“I feel like I could talk about art forever. Growing up, I was exposed to different styles of film, visual art, music, and dance that made a large impact on who I am today. For some, art serves as a vessel for an initiative or an emotion, but in all cases, true art is a reflection of the individual who makes it. It’s a tangible form of human experience and emotion. I try to create thought-provoking art in my films in order to share important and often overlooked topics with my peers.”

How did you find your photographer, BPI Photography, Inc.? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Bowen Photography was selected by my high school to take our senior portraits.  The photo session was fun

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I live with my sister Galaxi who is 27 and is my best friend, my amazing mom who is tough on me, but always has my back and my awesome bonus dad who’s been a part of my life since I was 6. I have two adorable dogs, Boone and Onni. My dad, Chad is my literal twin, sports mentor and supports all that I do. I stand out in my family because of my outrageous personality but they wouldn’t want it any other way! We have some crazy family antics, but I love being a part of it.

What is a favorite family memory you will never forget?
My family threw me the biggest Sweet 16 bash and chipped in to buy my dream car, Bruce, my 1990 Ford Bronco 2. They led me out of the party venue and all I saw was my beautiful bronco with a big red bow. You could hear my screams of excitement and appreciation from across the world. I will always remember such a special party with my family and friends.

Tell us about the sports you play. What is your favorite and why?
I play softball and lacrosse. It would be hard to pick a favorite because they are so different and I’m a different person when I step on the field or dirt to play both. From 50 minutes of non-stop fight and aggression to 7 Innings of mental toughness and strength, I love being a part of the game and every opportunity it has given me. I especially love the friendships and amazing memories both sports have given me. Team dinners, cutting up at practice, dugout chants and more. I live for my sports!

What is a favorite accomplishment from a sport you play?
Being elected as team captain for my Lacrosse team was an honor. It gave me a sense of pride to be chosen by my teammates to represent my team and school and to be recognized as a stand out leader. I was honored that my teammates and coaches looked at me in such a way and I am proud of myself for presenting myself and all the hard work I put into my sport. I always admired the Captains before me and wanted to lead the team and take on the same responsibilities as they did. Go Cowgirls!

Why is school important to you?

School is important to me because it is the foundation for college and my future. I want to prepare myself for what comes next in life and school is the first way to do so. School provides me with multiple resources and opportunities to ensure that I am successful, so taking those seriously can set me in the right direction for the future that I have imagined for myself. It also allows me to make friendships, get involved in my community and make life lasting memories.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?
While it will be a bittersweet moment for me, I am looking forward to graduating this year. I will miss high school and almost everything that came with it, but it will be rewarding to see my hard work pay off to set forth in the next chapter of my life. I am also looking forward to working as Editor in Chief with the yearbook staff and what we will create this year. I also look forward to my last season with the Women’s Lacrosse team and creating my final high school memories!

What do you love best about being the Yearbook Sports Editor?
I started my yearbook career as just a sports photographer and worked my way to becoming the Sports Editor and I love it! I love how I get to be a part of and up close to every sports culture and how it has made me branch out to new sports that I wouldn’t have thought I would enjoy, like how I found a love for the sport of wrestling! I also love how I get to watch my yearbook team’s hard work come together and how I get to be the one who brings it all together as Editor!

What have you learned about yourself being a volunteer for Camp Joy and Soccer Tots?
I have been able to be a part of something bigger than myself. I have learned about being aware of those around me and it has taught me to be selfless. It has allowed me to see the beauty in many different things through the eyes of children with disabilities. Volunteering for these wonderful programs has opened my eyes to career opportunities and how I could utilize my future career to work with children with disabilities.

What is your best leadership quality?
My best leadership quality would be my acceptance of others. I like to create a welcoming and comfortable space for everyone around me. You cannot lead others if they don’t feel comfortable being led by you. When you acknowledge those around you, they will acknowledge you back as well and then that creates a powerful thing that ultimately benefits everyone!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I've always been a kid that was a bit different from most kids and while some weren't always accepting of how I chose to express myself I have always stayed true to who I am. I know how hard it is to step out of the mold the world creates for us, especially as teens and I always try to show others that it is okay for them to step out too! I think it is important for everyone to embrace their individuality because no one wants to live in a world where we are all the same!

Picture
Photography by Galaxi Wilson

What else would you like to talk about?
I love music! I want everyone to understand how much music can be so cathartic for the soul! On the surface music provides entertainment, expression and even a career, but dig deeper and music is like a key to the soul. It holds so much power over the listener. Music can heal the listener from just a few songs.. From Vinyl to Spotify, music has always been so important to me, you almost never catch me not listening to music! I couldn’t imagine a world without it!

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
Human rights is one of the most important topics that I am passionate about because it affects everyone and everyday life. I’m a biracial young woman and I have experienced moments where I was scared for tomorrow and what it meant for those that looked like me. No one deserves to live in a world where they are scared to exist! We should focus on a world that uplifts, protects and inspires each other instead of focusing on breaking down one another. We cannot expect the world to progress if we can’t even allow one another to progress.

How did you find your photographer, Kelli Gowdy Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found Kelli Gowdy through my school and got to know her from taking sports pictures for our schools yearbook alongside her! I then signed up to join her Senior photography group “Kelli’s Krew” and we went from there! My submitted picture is actually from a shoot I did with my sister and it was an amazing experience! Kelli really took the time to capture the love and uniqueness of me and my sister's relationship, while providing professional quality.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
On the rare occasion where I would have absolutely nothing to do, you would find me getting lost in the music in a record shop. Browsing the store looking for a new gem for my collection, then taking it home to listen to at full volume. Nothing sounds better than the crackle of an old vinyl playing. I hope that in my next visit to a record shop I can find a Van Halen album to add to my collection.

How did you find your photographer, JS McGrew Photo? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Justin is a well-known photographer in our community for taking some of the most incredible photos and I knew when my senior year came around Justin would capture my love for sports. The images surpassed my expectations and I had so much fun working with him! He is so passionate about what he does. you'll find Justin on the sidelines of the high school sporting events to support the kids. not only is he there to take phenomenal action shots but is cheering us all on!

Tell us about your high school sports.
I play 3 varsity sports. I play soccer, basketball, and tennis. Growing up, I was always playing a sport. I have made some of the greatest friendships and learned the most valuable lessons. It also helped me create a balance between school and sports. Having the ability to balance sports and school while maintaining good grades will help prepare me for a successful future.

Which is your favorite sport and why?
My favorite sport is basketball. I have played basketball since I was in 1st grade and have always had a passion for it. I play year round with my club team and we travel all over for tournaments. With all the coaches I have had, they have all taught me different life lessons and built my confidence as a player and as a person.

What is your favorite accomplishment with one of your sports?
My favorite accomplishment was my high school basketball season as a sophomore. I had started the season off as a swing player, playing both JV and varsity and by the end of the year I was full time varsity. That season we made it all the way to the state championship and ended up placing second. I am proud of all that I accomplished by working hard and earning my chance to play in the championship game.

What type of leader are you both on and off the field?
I am the teammate that will always be there for you no matter what. During practices, I'll help you if you need it but I will push you to make you stronger and a better player. During games I always focus on lifting others up when they seem to be getting down after a mistake they made. I value having good relationships with all of my teammates and recognizing the importance of teamwork.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Sports have always been something I've enjoyed doing since I was little. It has given me so many opportunities and has paved an inspiring path for me to want to study Health Sciences in college. I've always been motivated to do my best at everything I do. Sports are important to me but so is maintaining good grades. I've been able to balance my time between classes and sports even on those tough days when I'm exhausted! I always find a way to push through it!

How do you balance it all and stay on track?
I am a very organized person and I believe that helps you balance both academics and sports. I always write my school assignments don somewhere whether it is on my planner or on my phone as a reminder. I also never procrastinate. It can be hard not to at times, but I always get work done before it is due so that i'm not waiting until the last minute.

What are you most looking forward to this next school year?
I am going to be a senior so I am looking forward to all the fun experiences and times that I am going to have with my friends. I know that senior year is going to fly by, but I am going to cherish every moment before I leave for college next summer.

What is the biggest thing you are hoping to teach younger classmen?
My biggest piece of advice is to get as involved as you can. Whether it is playing a sport or joining a club, try to be involved with your high school as much as possible. Trust me, you will meet new people, create the best friendships, learn a lot more, and gain skills that will help you be more successful in the future.

What else would you like to talk about?
Yes I have been so blessed to have the opportunities I've had but that doesn't come without any bumps in the road. Last year during a basketball game I tore my ACL. I was devastated. I knew I would be out for a stretch of time. Instead of focusing on the negative, I took it as an opportunity to push myself to get back to sports. My injury in the long run Made Me Stronger and has led me down the path of wanting to pursue a career with a goal of helping others.

Picture
Photography by JSmcgrewPhoto

Tell us about your friends. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
I always believe that with friendships it is quality of quantity. I have a smaller group of friends but I know that I can trust them all. We all love going on hikes, paddle boarding, having the best sleepovers, and our favorite is going to the football games in the fall. I am definitely the friend who always gives advice and is the mom of the group but I always know how to have a fun time.

What is your family like and what is a favorite family tradition you hope never ends?
I am very close with my family. We value spending time together as much as possible even with all of our different schedules with work and sports. A tradition that I hope never ends is getting together for the holidays, especially Christmas. Christmas is my favorite holiday and we always go to church every Christmas eve. I really enjoy going with my family and I hope that even when I leave for college, we all still continue that tradition.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am incredibly passionate about the need to help and teach others! Because of my passion for sports and overcoming an injury, it has led me to head in the direction of Health Sciences to either teach or work in an environment that allows me to lead others to success.

What do you wish others knew about your atrial septal defect?

To be completely honest, I try not to bring up my heart problems with those who aren't very close with me. I try my best to never make it an excuse, and I hope people who know about it see it as an inspiration that I do not let my issues or problems affect performance and who I am. I am blessed that my condition mostly does not hinder me in many ways, and I understand that many people have it much harder in this regard. However, I believe one should make the absolute most of the hand that they are given; a belief that I try to live and breathe every day.

What are some challenges you had to overcome to get to where you are now?
Self-doubt and depression have been a mainstay for me as long as I can remember since heart surgery. Weeks after the surgery, I wasn't allowed to be a regular, active kid. Now, I realize how much I value being outdoors and moving my body. Throughout my life, I have struggled with my mental game on the field and in life. Being active and in sports has been a crucial outlet for me, and if I did not learn from early challenges from my heart surgery, I can't imagine where I would be now. I believe everyone is molded from their experiences, and those experiences can either enrich or destroy a person. It is up to the individual to decide if they are helped or hurt by their challenges.

Do you have any lingering effects or limitations? If so, what are they and how do you get past them with all you do?
My heart surgery and condition really does not affect me in day to day life. However, I do have some lasting effects. I've been diagnosed now with 1st and 2nd degree heart block, which are essentially delays in signal transmissions within the heart. Because of this, I am at a higher risk for arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) and hypertension, or destabilization in my lungs. Both are conditions that could escalate into serious problems. Regardless, I just focus on the controllables in my life, which are what I do with and put into my body. I take care of it with all that I do, and I trust that it will reciprocate this care. I think it is seriously a relationship, and I have built a strong connection with my body though years of play and hard work, so much so that my heart isn't a constant concern most of the time.

How would you describe your leadership style?
No matter what, I try to lead by example. On the field and during workouts, I push myself to the limit and bring others there with me. I find myself at the front of the pack often, pushing the pace and holding strong with others whom I share a bond with. One we have created through sweat and hard work. Sometimes, I'll admit my intensity becomes a weakness as a leader, but as captain I work every day to mold together with my teammates and cater to each of them to bring out their best on gameday.
Recently I have really been focused on improving my leadership, especially come this senior season. I want to end on a high and bring up my teammates with me, and I feel a sense of responsibility and pride to end out my years of being a Bulldog.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My tenacity and work ethic stand out to my teammates and coaches. Again, I hope to inspire and push others to become their best with me. And I know to do that, I have to practice exactly what I preach.

What class are you most looking forward to this year and why?

I'm looking forward to Spanish 4. This is mainly because of my amazing teacher, Mrs. Mary Imaz, who has taught me Spanish all of high school. Our relationship is tight, and we have grown as friends and colleagues since freshman year. Also, I enjoy learning a new language, and seeing work from many years come into fruition as an improved product that I've worked hard for.

Tell us about your soccer career.
I've been playing my whole life, as it has been part of my family since day one. Ever since I can remember I’ve been part of a team, playing in various local youth leagues and eventually travel teams. Along the way I have built my skills and sharpened myself as an athlete and person. Soccer has been my main sport, and I have had to focus on it and let my other activities like XC ski racing fade to the side. While I still love to branch out, and still run track for my high school, it is impossible to deny everything that I have given soccer, and all it has given me.
My senior season is starting very soon, and I feel I am in a great place, and more ready than ever to make it one to remember.

What is your favorite accomplishment with soccer?
Personally, I feel most proud and happy with the simple progress that I have made with the sport. I have worked extremely hard to be where I am now, and I wouldn't trade anything for this accomplishment. Also, I feel soccer has given me an outlet and route to build a relationship with myself, the ball, and many others that are my teammates and coaches that share my passion for the sport.

What is your friend group like? What do you like to do together?
I really have only young man that I would consider myself to be best friends with. At this point we are extremely tight; tight to the point I would call him family. Unlike what seems to be the norm for teenagers nowadays, he and I do not party or drink or do anything that is considered "fun" by our classmates. Our idea of the word would look more like working out, playing various games, or watching a movie and staying up late to have deep conversations and really catch up with each other. In a world that is so superficial, we have an extremely deep relationship as a result of years of tight friendship. We pride ourselves on being outside of the norm of teenagers today as we try to improve and mold each other into good young men.

Tell us about your family.
My family is and always has been my foundation. I have two younger brothers, both who share my interest in sports and the outdoors. They impress me daily with all they do and inspire me to be the best brother I possibly can. Their ages are 16 and 13, and they can keep up with me during most activities that I do. It’s like having two permanent best friends, and two high level training partners and soccer players all rolled into one. I couldn’t ask for a better deal.
My parents are both hardworking and equally inspirational people in my opinion. They both work to allow opportunities across sports for my brothers and I, and it is safe to say that I wouldn't be who I am today without them. They're instrumental in my life and I am extremely grateful for that.

What is a favorite family trip you know you'll never forget.
One memorable trip we went on was this last summer to Texas, where most of my family lives. We spent time hanging out with family and enjoying life in the small town where my mother grew up. I was able to work at my uncle’s crop-dusting business, train at a local field and go hunting on family land. It was an amazing balance of work and play that made for some amazing memories.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
You could drive by the soccer field, where I'll probably be training by myself, putting in the hours and relishing in my ability to play the game I love. Aside from that, I'd be on my back porch playing guitar.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
My senior season and year of high school are coming right up, and I am excited to put in another great year on the field and in the classroom. Beyond high school, I plan to play soccer in college and explore various interests that will hopefully lead into my career as an adult.

Picture
Photography by Katie Ray Photography

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?

Pulling out the chest tubes after surgery comes to mind. For some reason they kept me conscious for the excruciatingly painful and scary process. Also, I would say putting in many consecutive years of straight A grades with AP and honors classes is a huge accomplishment that I really had to work for.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
- Work hard. Make time for yourself to do so, and understand that falling in love with the work makes the grind irresistible, and improvement is just a byproduct of having fun with whatever you put your mind to.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself playing college or professional soccer at a competitive level, as I continue to find myself and push my limits as a person and athlete.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Playing guitar.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I'm really good at table tennis, but that is also because I play a lot and take it seriously, so I've gotten good... So not really a talent.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to Europe, become a pilot, and join the special forces in the military.

Who do you find inspiring?
I often feel touched, inspired, and motivated by people who are better than me at any given thing. I try to learn as much as I can from everyone around me, thus hopefully improving myself, my relationships, and the other person as well.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I hope to inspire anyone who isn't where they want to be in life, and hope my story and message of hard work can spur them to take action and attack their goals.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I think anything is possible through hard work, and every teen has their own story and is equally (if not more) inspiring as me.

What are you most looking forward to about your senior year?
At my school, the senior class gets many advantages such as senior sunrise, the senior class trip, and of course painting our names on senior hill. When I was a freshman, I always looked forward to getting to participate in those exclusive experiences only for seniors.

What legacy or advice do you hope to leave behind?
I try to live my life with putting God first, others second, and myself last. You always need to take into consideration the feelings of others without judgment.

What sports do you play, and which is your favorite? Why?
In school I am involved in both Cross Country and Track and Field. I definitely like Cross Country a lot more because I love how the scenery is always different, and the natural terrain is always a surprise. I also love how friendly the competition is, everyone is constantly cheering each other on which makes the sport so fun to be a part of.

What is a favorite accomplishment from sports?
My junior year of Track and Field we had an outstanding girls team. All the ladies were good at the events they were in and gave it their all at track meets. At our district meet, we won the meet by 0.5 of a point for the girls team. Our team and all of our supporters were so thrilled at all the hard work we put in. I have been in Track and Field since 7th grade and I have never experienced such unity during a sport.

What is your family like? Where do you fit in and where do you stand out?
I am the first born in my family and I have one younger brother. My family is passionate about each of our own diverse interests. We are all goal driven and very supportive to one another. I am a lot like my family, where we share similar traits and characteristics based on Christian values. Although I share many traits with my family, I have a strong endurance which helps me persevere to achieve my goals.

What is a favorite family memory you know you will never forget?

Some of my favorite memories with my family are when we go on big family vacations with all of my cousins. We have experienced many fun sites together such as The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Disney World, Alaska, as well as many memories in Missouri.

How would your friends describe you - and how would you describe your friend group?
I have a range of friendships from church, school, and work. I think my friends would agree that I am very independent and I tend to create my own path while avoiding peer pressure. I love the friends that I have, they always give me the best advice when I need it most.

What do you love doing most with your friends?
When I’m with my friends a lot of times we like to go out whether it’s playing pickleball at the park, going shopping, or relaxing at the creek. Some of my favorite times are when we are just driving around town listening to music and putting all of our worries behind us.

Tell us about your faith.
I feel like over my high school career, my faith in God has grown much stronger. I put my trust in God and I am confident that He will fulfill His promises.

Why is your faith important to you?
I am so grateful for all the wonderful things that God has done in my life. Without faith in God, I would have no direction in life and would have a difficult time achieving my goals.

I consider my proficient grades through school while maintaining extracurricular activities including sports and a part-time job to be motivating. In addition, I participate in leadership roles through National Honors Society, Student Council, as well as multiple church events. I would say that I am a self starter and a self motivator who is goal-driven with a strong work ethic and moral character.

I am very organized and eager to go the extra mile to complete a task.

I am from a small, rural town in Southwest Missouri. I enjoy being outdoors; whether I am running on country roads, riding my bike, or watching the sun set above the creek. I value spending time with my family and friends in my free time. I have one younger brother, Regan, and a Golden Retriever, named Betsy Ross. I am an active member of the First United Methodist Church.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I feel very passionate about all things creative. I admire all genres of music as well as all mediums of art. I feel inspired by these forms of self-expression, I really appreciate the little things in life.

How did you find your photographer, Julie Lee Photography, LLC? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Julie Lee is a long time family-friend who attends church with me. Julie has a great personality with an encouraging spirit. Working with Julie is a very laid-back experience. Her creative mind inspires me to be my best self. She takes initiative and cares about the individual she is working with. She always knows how to capture the perfect moment.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would definitely be laying in a flower field or at the creek watching the sunset.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
My senior year, I would like to make a third run at State in Cross Country. I am super excited for all the fun spirit contests and I can’t wait to experience all of the senior privileges.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I know how to pick fresh fruit at the grocery store!

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to travel the world, pet a moose, and skydive!

Cristian Karakash – Minnesota
Nomination & Photography by Connie Stone Photography
Issue 70 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Cristian is inspiring for his interest in US government and military. He has been involved in Boys State, which simulates and educates on Minnesota government focusing on leadership and character. Building leadership and lifelong skills he attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp. Due to his military interest, he plans to attend the Naval Academy after high school. His school activities involve two choir groups performing at community and school events. Additionally, he is involved in Key Club which focuses on community service projects and events. All these activities while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and working at his family-owned resort.

Why have you chosen an interest in the US Government and military?
Ever since I was little I was highly interested in the military. It was always a compelling feeling and it has never been rivaled by any other career choice throughout my life. The closest career choice that would rival it is something within government. I am recently new to the government side of interest, but it is still a very important and crucial process in every way. Both the military and the government are roles of public service and defense of the country's constitution and everything it stands for.

Specifically, what are you interested in?
In government I am interested in congress and specifically the legislative process. Potentially the House of Representatives. In the military, specifically the Navy, I am deciding between a career in Surface Warfare or Piloting as of now. I have also considered something in the Intelligence field.

What did you learn at Boys State?
Boys State was an experience that really made me realize the importance of networking between individuals and the game of politics itself. There was a lot of discussion and convincing to achieve certain positions but it was all done in a respectful manner.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I think it is difficult to describe your own leadership style. It is necessary for the people who follow you to describe it on your behalf, as they are the ones being impacted by it. I think the most important part is convincing other people to trust you more than themselves, especially in a military setting.

What did you learn at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards?
I was skeptical going into it, after just having been at Boys State I highly doubted anything would be able to top the experience I had there. Instead, it was an entirely different type of experience and it was actually useful in many ways. It was more directed towards impactful lessons to develop leadership skills as opposed to simulated government like Boys State.

Tell us about your choir group. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
Choir is something I have always been involved in and had fun in. I think it is a great experience and it really makes the school day a lot more interactive and fun to go through. I think I fit in with those around me in my same section of singing. I have known most of them for a long time and it makes it a lot easier to work with people you already know. I think I stand out with solo work and being able to perform while keeping nerves at bay on stage.

What genre of music do you love to listen to the most?
My favorite type of music is most of the classic rock songs from the 70s and 80s. I have always enjoyed that music over modern day music and I personally listen to it very frequently.

How do you balance everything you do socially with your fantastic GPA?
To me it isn't really that difficult to maintain a solid GPA so long as you do your work and pay attention without doing unproductive things in class. The teachers make it relatively easy to understand and complete most homework. It hasn't been that much of an impact in my life, rather a side goal.

What have you learned about working with the public at your family owned resort?

Working with the public is a great experience but it also is one that is very impactful if you have the same people coming back every year. Throughout my time there, the hardest part is definitely losing a long time guest or someone who has been coming there for a significant amount of time.

What do you wish others knew about working with the public?
It's a unique experience that helps you develop a better understanding of other people's issues and specialties. I have been able to connect and learn from many people over the years who I would have never known in my life most likely if I hadn't been in the position I am.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In terms of material activities or other things, I wouldn't say that I have a whole ton to symbolize the term 'inspiring'. What I do believe in is maintaining a sense of honor and dignity throughout my life. Acting in the favor and security of those around me as opposed to myself alone. These are things I consider to hold close to myself but may be deemed inspirational by others.

What else would you like to talk about?
Personally I have had a relatively easy life growing up. To me, that is a great thing but in some aspects it is a negative thing. I believe everyone should have some form of strength in their life through mentality and discipline to complete certain activities. I am a strong believer in living a fun and great life filled with kindness, but there are situations where being able to maintain a calm and careful thinking mindset is very important. This is something I have learned and developed despite having a life that didn't require me to do this.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am very involved in history and the military. History is very important to me, as I believe it is the most valuable subject to act in the interest of the future instead of the present. My favorite history topic is World War II. I believe there is so much to learn about within that topic and I find it all highly interesting, especially applying to the military side of things.

How did you find your photographer, Connie Stone Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I found my photographer through a family friend, Bruce Black. I am very glad he provided her contact information to us as it was an awesome experience. We took some family photos and senior photos for my graduation. She was very kind and helpful towards the process, always working to get the best possible photos to make us happy. I loved the fact that we included a variety of outfits. My favorite one involved my Naval jacket with my Boys State pin on the collar.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I would be in France on the beaches of Normandy. I went there once before this past April and I would call it the best experience of my life so far. There is so much to see and even with being there a week, we experienced so little but so much at the same time.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
I am excited to see what happens with my life after school and what I end up pursuing through USNA or wherever I end up going.

What two college courses will you be taking this year and why are you excited about them?
This year I will be taking Intro to Criminology and Psychology. I am taking these classes because I have three career paths I have thought about for a while now, which are psychology, criminology, and law. I have been studying the brain as much as possible since 6th grade and its absolutely fascinating.

What made you decide to take college courses while still in high school?
I’m taking these classes for college credit because I'm very passionate about these subjects. I am very lucky to be cleared for this opportunity.

What are your roles as manager of the baseball team?
Being the manager for the baseball team isn't the hardest thing in the world nor the easiest. I grew up with everyone that plays and I have been around this sport for as long as I can remember. Baseball is my favorite sport and I'm very happy to keep stats for the coaches and have great memories.

What leadership skills have you developed in this role, and which is your strongest? Leadership isn't what I would call it, I would say it's about being a team even if you're not actually on the field. Paying attention and making sure yourself and others are on task is my strongest skill.

What are you most looking forward to for this next school year?
I’m excited to participate in upperclassman activities. I’m also very excited to take classes I'm very interested in!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My friends and family are a huge inspiration to me. I know that if anything were to happen which could be positive or negative, I would have a village to run to. I am so grateful for the crazy, funny, and caring people in my life.

What is your friend group like and what do you like to do together?
I don't have much of a friend group, but the people I'm friends with do and every now and then we all hangout. There's not much to do in our small town, but we do love to watch the sunset from Mesa Verde Lookout.

What is a favorite memory with your friends?
I don't think I can possibly pick a favorite. My favorite memories are when we laugh so hard it hurts everywhere no matter who I'm with.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?

I have two loving parents, Jane and Mark Kibel. I have an older brother by 4 years Dylan Kibel. I’m close with them all including my grandma and grandpa Lisa Smoker and Jeffrey Smoker and my wonderful cousin Jada James. I’m particularly close with Jada for that she is my best friend. None of them are my favorite cause I love them all the same and unconditionally. They have all been so supportive of this whole experience including my mom, Jane.

What is a family tradition you hope never ends?
Every Thanksgiving or Christmas we play Pictionary or just and board game for that matter. It always the funnest time and we all joke and laugh and spend quality time together.

What else would you like to talk about?
I never get picked for anything, except for this one time in 2nd grade when out of the whole school I won a huge prize for a fundraiser our school was having, and what an achievement that was.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk about forever?
I am passionate about 3 things in particular and that is psychology, criminology, and law. I could go one for hours and hours about those topics, hopefully it’s what I will be doing someday for the rest of my life.

How did you find your photographer, Gina Boren Photography? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I have always known my photographer. We are close with each other’s family. Her name is Gina Boren and the past two years I get to see her for every holiday!

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
My room is my safe haven. The only place in the world where your own room expresses yourself more than words could. Everyone’s room is different and tells a story as soon as you enter.

What is up next for you that you are super excited about?
School is starting soon, which means memories, friends, games, activities, and learning about things people are passionate in!
