What inspired your love for becoming a pilot and majoring in Professional Flight at Purdue University in the fall?
My love for becoming a pilot and majoring in Professional Flight at Purdue University was inspired by my love for travel. I love visiting new places every time I travel; it is one of my favorite hobbies. I have always loved to try new things so being a pilot would give me a new experience every day and allow to have excitement every day!

What was the application process like for majoring in professional flight?
The application process for majoring in professional flight required an extra essay in addition to the normal one. I also had to apply by a certain date to be considered for the major because of the competition to be in this major, to which they only except around 80 for.

How have you managed your academics including having a 4.2 GPA while also being committed to basketball, cross country, show choir, and other extracurricular activities you are involved in?
I have managed my academics and a 4.2 GPA by staying organized and motivated. I always wanted to do well in school and improve. I used a planner in high school to remember all my assignments and tried to get as much done as I could before my practices and meetings. I loved the extra-curricular activities and sports that I participated in, so I was always motivated to do my best in them.

In what ways have you given back to your school and your community?
On many occasions my friends and I went to nursing homes and decorated for the holidays. We also put up Christmas decorations for a non-profit organization that provides counseling services for women. One year my school’s National Honor Society put on an art festival in the memory of a student who passed away earlier that year. We organized different booths, students brought in art, and people performed on stage to honor the student, who deeply enjoyed the arts. The money raised from the art festival was donated to Riley Hospital for Children in her memory.

What advice would you give to teen girls who are wanting to pursue a passion in flight, based on your experience?

Obviously having good grades and keeping your head straight is advice I would give to teen girls. In addition to that, the advice I would give to teen girls wanting to pursue a passion in flight is to not let anyone tell you that you can’t be a pilot. It’s not a secret that the percentage of female pilots is a shockingly low one, but this only means that you should try that much harder to be a pilot. A very integral part of pursuing flight for me was having a female pilot mentor that could answer my questions and give support and understanding where others could not. Always pursue your passions even if it’s not what people think you should do and remember, the future is female!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is my artistic ability. I have always done art and been crafty throughout my life. I make keychains and jewelry, paint with watercolors, and draw. I love to pass the time with this hobby!

3 Things on your bucket list
learn how to rock climb, travel to all 50 states, have my honeymoon in Venice, Italy

John Michael Images by John Michael

The Nomination: Lindsay Caroline Stambaugh is an amazing young lady that has overcome a CF diagnosis before turning one. She plays sports and is a shining example for today’s youth.
Picture

I was diagnosed at 2 months old so having this disease is all I know. I am not sure what normal feels like. The challenges that I have overcome is trying to do the same things other kids my age could do and not have any one notice that I was different. I take quite a bit of medicine so it’s a challenge to me to take it when I am supposed to.

I have maintained a normal teenage life through overcoming Cystic Fibrosis because my parents always have always made sure I was doing my treatments and medicines right. I believe this is why I am fairly healthy today.
Picture

The sports I have been involved in basketball, cheerleading, and softball. My favorite sport is softball. I have been playing softball since the age of 6. I have been on 5 all-star teams where I was the pitcher or 2nd base. My 14-year-old year we were one game away from the World Series. I played left field while in high school. My sophomore year I was nominated to the all regional team. I was very disappointed I didn’t get to play my Senior year due to the COVID 19 virus. I have plans to be in a summer league this July.

My family is the absolute best and I believe that is why I have done so well in my life. My mom is a schoolteacher so when I was diagnosed my grandmother did not return to work and kept me in her home so I would not have to be in a daycare. I never miss an appointment or any kind of treatment because my parents and grandparents work very hard to make sure I am doing what I am supposed too. I have only been in the hospital one time and I believe it is because my family has taken such good care of me. I recently started a new medicine that helps remove the mucus from my lungs and this is the closest thing to a cure that has been developed.

The advice that I would give other teens with Cystic Fibrosis is make sure you complete your treatments daily. A good family support system is something that is great to have. Please keep fighting because a cure is going to be found.

Kiera Hoover

Kiera Hoover - Ohio
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Katherine Boushie
Photography by Studio 187
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kiera Hoover exemplifies the meaning of the word ‘inspiring’ for so many reasons. Kiera has faced numerous difficult challenges growing up, the latest being her diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which affects her connective tissue in joints, causing her nearly daily pain. Despite her challenges, Kiera has been active in school activities as well as in service to others. She was captain of Varsity cheer and a member of Link Crew both leadership roles. As Pure International Miss Teen Midwest Ohio, she has set an example by actively doing for others. She has been a coach for Special Olympics and participated in Relay for Life and Down Syndrome Buddy Walk, providing food for those in need and more! She aspires to be an ASL interpreter. Everything she does is with joy on her face and love in her heart!

What is Ehlers Danlos-Syndrome, and how have you overcome all the challenges it comes with growing up?
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a disease that weakens the connective tissue primarily in your joints, skin and blood vessel walls. I have struggled with pain and loose joints for the last few years. I went to years of doctor appointments and physical therapy, but things were just getting worse. During my senior year of cheerleading I went to do a back handspring and dislocated my elbow. After more testing I was diagnosed with EDS. I was able to finish my senior year cheering, but with a lot of restrictions. Every day I have some degree of pain, aches or some joint sliding out of place, but I try to put a smile on my face and enjoy each day and adventure as best as I can.

How are you active in your school and your community?
I started being active in cheer, theater, volunteering and being a part of Link Crew because being a part of something allows you to feel accepted. When I was younger, I always felt I was alone or didn’t really fit in. It was a feeling that I didn’t want others to experience. Cheerleading and theater gave me the confidence I needed and how to be part of a team. Link Crew is a mentor program that helps our incoming Freshman. I remember when I first started at Lincoln, I was so overwhelmed and nervous in such a big school. I wanted to make sure that others felt like they had someone to come to and help them. Volunteering is not just rewarding for others, but also for myself.

What do you love most about being captain for your Varsity Cheer team and what responsibilities does it come with?
I loved being captain for the GLHS Varsity Cheer team because I was able to help lead and groom others like previous captains did to me. I have always wanted to be a captain since my freshman year of high school. As a captain it is our responsibility to help our coach with cheers, chants, schools banners and signs, support our local community, other sports, schools and anything that needs someone to cheer them on.
Picture
Photography by Studio 187
Tell me about the times you’ve had with being a coach for Special Olympics and participating in Relay for Life and the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk.
I started helping with the Special Olympics, Relay for Life and the Down Syndrome Buddy Walk because my stepmom, Julie, is a cancer survivor and a special needs educational aide. She always brought me in the classroom and showed me the importance of inclusion. It’s learning that people don’t have disabilities but a different ability. They have coached me just as much as I have coached them.

How have your parents become a big inspiration in your life, and in what ways have they impacted who you are?
My parents have provided me with a humble foundation with which to build a faith based future upon. This foundation consists of clear expectations and opportunities to learn from small mistakes. By leveraging faith based values they have encouraged community involvement and are by my side, leading through example.

What advice would you give to other teens who have gone through something similar that you have, or advice on how to stay active in their communities?
I would recommend that people volunteer often, to humble themselves and to become more selfless. You can do something as simple as donating an hour a month going to the library to read to those who can't, help people grocery shop, or take out people's trash, all of which are non-financial things that most people can spare time for.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished was tumbling. At the time I wasn’t diagnosed with EDS and I was in constant joint pain and my joints would give out. I knew I had to successfully tumble to become a part of the varsity cheer squad. I spent countless hours at physical therapy, private lessons and extra practices until I was successfully able to tumble. My very first time I did was at my cheer tryouts at the end of my sophomore year and since I didn't give up, I made the varsity squad my junior year.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Even when things seem like they are impossible or you are alone, keep your head up and keep pressing on. There is always some opportunity in the middle of difficulty and you are much stronger than you think you are.
Picture
Photography by Studio 187
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I will be attending Columbus State and Otterbein University in the fall to pursue American Sign Language Interpreting. I hope to see myself working for an airline as a bilingual flight attendant so I can travel the world and share my passion for ASL.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite pastime was when I received my title as 2020 PURE International Pageants Miss Teen Midwest Ohio. I will be going to Nationals this September in Columbus, Ohio.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is singing. I just started sharing this with my family and friends over the last couple of months. I love singing and I am glad I am finally getting the confidence to share it with others.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would share the topic of inclusion. Inclusion in society today is such an uncomfortable topic, but it is so important to me and other teens. Everyone longs to be included.

3 Things on your bucket list
Skydiving
Travel to Italy
Foster Animals

Who do you find inspiring?
My parents.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think I am inspiring because I keep pressing on to help others feel special or included even when I have been left out or feeling like I wasn’t important. I want to keep being a better version of myself and hope that I can help others do the same.

Izzy Dorfman

Izzy Dorfman - Maryland
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Mark Dorfman
Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Aside from her love of dance and infectious laughter, Izzy Dorfman has a passion for helping others. Izzy, who has been concerned about hunger issues since she was a seven-year old girl packing food for the Hunger Project, learned of the shocking number of local families that were experiencing food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Putting her time in quarantine to good use, Izzy co-founded an online business designing and selling face masks. In addition to helping to combat the spread of COVID-19 (with a bit of style, of course), her new business, Mask’d, donates a portion of the proceeds from each mask sold to No Kid Hungry. Izzy has also baked and decorated countless birthday cakes for underprivileged children.
Picture
Tell me about your business Mask’d that you founded with your best friend and how it has helped others during this COVID-19 pandemic.
My best friend, Samantha and I were looking for a way to give back to the community during our time in quarantine. We found a way to express our creativity, encourage people to wear masks, and donate to No Kid Hungry.

How has your business impacted No Kid Hungry and different families in need?
20% of our proceeds are donated to No Kid Hungry, an amazing organization that helps families-especially during this time when many kids no longer have access to the meals they would be getting in school.

Picture
What do you love most about dance and when did you start dancing?
I’ve been dancing since I could walk. When I was a little girl I loved getting to put on a fancy tutu and have fun with my friends. Now, it has become a great way for me to express myself.

How has your hard work and dedication impacted all that you are involved in and who you are as a person?
Not everything I do comes easily to me. I sometimes have to work a little harder to achieve my goals. But I rarely get discouraged and am not afraid of putting in extra effort. These challenges remind me to be compassionate to my friends and others in the community who are struggling and inspires me to have the patience to encourage and try to help them,

Picture
What does it mean to you to leave an impact on others through the difference you are making in people’s lives and in your community?
I recognize that I have been fortunate and feel it comes with an obligation to help those who have had fewer advantages.

As an inspiration, what advice would you give to someone in regard to the current pandemic who is in a similar situation as you to spread positivity?
Although I sometimes feel restless having to stay at home during the pandemic, I generally view being able to stay home as an opportunity to spend more time with my family and catching up with old friends through social media. I feel lucky that I live in such a happy home and don’t have a job that requires me to go out and put myself in harm's way.

Mia Engelbrecht

Picture

Mia Engelbrecht - Oklahoma
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Sophie Engelbrecht
Photography by Jennifer Engelbrecht
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Mia Engelbrecht is a senior at Miami High School and will graduate as Valedictorian of her class. She has participated in many clubs and sports including Student Council, National Honor Society Vice President, Miami Youth Leadership, cross country, and varsity soccer. She was a 2019 Girls State Delegate and the October Rotary Student of the Month in 2019. She has been dancing at Dance Academy for 14 years and has won various awards at competitions over the years. Mia is a talented, kind, hard-working, and bright person who is a strong role model to many.
Picture
Photography by Jennifer Engelbrecht
When did you start dancing and what inspired you to start?
I started dancing when I was 2 years old. My older sister had danced at the same studio and my mom wanted me to do the same after seeing how much my sister loved it. It’s been a long and very enjoyable 16 years of dancing.

What is your favorite performance you have danced in over the past 14 years?
My favorite performance was probably when I got the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in my studio’s performance of The Nutcracker. The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was by far my favorite part of the whole performance.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Engelbrecht
You teach dance classes at your dance studio, tell me more about what that is like!
I teach young students at my studio; I’ve taught ages from 3 to 8. I enjoy being able to share my own love for dance with those who may be just starting in hopes that it becomes an impactful part of their life just as it has been in mine.

What are the main differences between taking a dance class and teaching them?
I find that I learn a lot about dance every time I’m in the studio, whether that be when I’m the teacher or the student. The main difference, though, is that when I teach, I find myself using the same lessons and techniques that my own teacher used on me throughout the years. When I’m in class I’m solely focused on taking in those lessons and focusing on improving my own skills.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Engelbrecht
How do you balance all of the clubs you are involved in at school and dance?
Balancing all of my activities was hard at times, but I always made it a point to carve out time for every activity I was involved in. I had to be sure not to procrastinate school work as I knew that was the most important thing to do, and once that was done I was able to portion out my time equally between all of my activities, although dance was my main priority, so it generally took up more time than the others.
Picture
Photography by Jennifer Engelbrecht
Is dance something you would want to continue to do in your future? Why or why not?
I plan on using teaching as my platform to continue my dance career after high school. I don’t know if it will be a lifelong career for me, but definitely something that I plan on continuing to do throughout college.

Rachel Liazos

5/28/2020

Picture

Rachel Liazos - Massachusetts
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination by Meg Liazos
Photography by Kelly Burneson Photography
Issue 34 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Rachel Liazos is inspirational because of her dedication to her sport, Softball. Rachel was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her back during middle school. She was confined to a back brace 23 hours a day. This injury took Rachel out of the game for several years. Rachel cheered on her team from the bench for hundreds of games, unsure if she could ever join her teammates ever again. Through hundreds of hours in the gym, on the field with coaches, Rachel was able to return to softball and will be playing at the collegiate level next year.

Picture
Photography by Kelly Burneson Photography

When did you start playing softball and what inspired you to start playing?

I started playing softball when I was just 5 years old. My parents signed me up for every sport when I was little including soccer, basketball, and golf. Playing softball was just another sport that I was excited to try. Little did I know at the time, that softball would become such a big part of my life.

What do you love so much about playing softball and being on the team?
Softball is a game of incredible highs, and consequently, incredible lows. The feelings of hitting a solid line drive after a hitting slump or mastering a backhand after many failed attempts kept bringing me back to the sport. No matter how many times I failed, I still craved the feeling of the ping of the bat after a hard hit ball or the pop of the glove after catching a hard line drive.
Being on a team is a feeling like no other. I was lucky enough to be a part of some very special teams. When you spend every weekend, 10 hours at a time with a group of people, you get very close. I never had any sisters growing up so my teammates, who were often older than me, quickly became my sisters. I looked up to them in many ways.

What was going through your mind when you found out about your stress fracture and when you were told you might not be able to play again?
At the time I had built my identity around being an athlete, so naturally, I was crushed. As teenagers do, I thought that my entire life was ruined and hopeless. In some ways, it didn’t even feel real. It took several weeks for me to digest this horrible news that I may never be able to play again. It felt like some weird dream I was having and that if I woke up it would all just be over and I could play with my friends again.

Picture
Photography by Kelly Burneson Photography

Tell me more about the recovery process you went through to be able to play again?
I was confined to a back brace for 23 hours a day. This brace stretched from my upper torso to my low back. It was incredibly restrictive; it was nearly impossible to bend down. I needed help from my family for simple tasks, such as tying my shoes. I was also given a bone stimulator that was designed to enhance bone stimulation in my back for the areas that were fractured. This device was constantly attached to my hip and would beep incessantly if it became detached. I was told not to do any form of exercise or anything that involved rotation. I used to take long walks with my mom every day to keep moving, even a little bit.

What were some of the obstacles you had to push through during recovery? How did you handle them?
The hardest thing about recovery was not being able to play full speed. I used to be able to throw ten balls a day. I would argue with my dad saying, “I feel fine, I can throw more!” and he would force me to call it a day and stop. I had got a taste of softball back in my life and I wanted more of it. It was painful for me to take a step back and stop. Especially as athletes, we are trained to dig harder and keep going. It was challenging to shift that mindset during my recovery and try to train smarter, not harder.

What was it like knowing you were going to be able to play softball again? Was playing after recovery different from playing before?
I always felt in my heart that I would return to softball. There may have been days when I felt hopeless but deep down, I always knew I could do it. I thought that after my recovery I would pick up where I left off on the field. I could not have been more wrong. I had to retrain my body how to swing a bat, throw a ball, and field a grounder. I had been out for more than two years - I was out of shape, out of hitting condition, and needed to reestablish my throwing mechanics. I was far from the best player on the field - I struck out, made defensive errors, and constantly questioned myself. I wondered if I could ever return to be the player I was. There was a moment for me when I decided that I wasn’t going to be content with just being back on the field, I wanted to be great on the field. I spent hundreds of hours trying to get there, be it in the gym with a trainer, on the field with coaches, or with my counselor getting my head straight. Playing now is different than before. I think my injury gives me an edge on my opponents. I know how to dig deep during tough games and keep my head up. My mental game is undoubtedly stronger because of my injury.

Picture
Photography by Kelly Burneson Photography

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

My advice is simple: things happen for a reason. Instead of wishing away your struggles, embrace them, and turn them into your strengths.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
Next year I will be attending Bates College where I will major in Political Science and play softball. After college, I plan on attending law school. After law school I want to work for the Equal Justice Initiative, Innocence Project, or the American Civil Liberties Union as a legal advocate for those wrongfully incarcerated and those on death row.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I use a 30 commit planner, which helps me to keep my academic and athletic schedules. I am also a huge fan of highlighting and color-coding systems!

3 Things on your bucket list
Meet Ruth Bader Ginsburg, step inside the White House, and travel to Paris.

Who do you find inspiring?
First and foremost are my parents, siblings, and grandparents. Outside of my family, my top models are Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Michelle Obama, and Robin Arzon.
Picture
Photography by Kelly Burneson Photography

Anything else you’d like to tell us?

I started high school with my injury. I didn’t know anyone there and felt isolated not being able to join a sport. My parents encouraged me to get involved in other school activities, and I decided to join the Mock Trial team, thinking nothing of it. I always liked writing and my father was a lawyer, so I figured, why not? Mock Trial, which imitates what it is like to try a case, was both a gift and a revelation for me.

Being back on a team in a competitive environment helped me feel better about myself. Better yet, I found out that I liked going back and forth with opposing student attorneys over objections and figuring out what storylines would be most persuasive to a judge. Being in the courtroom allowed me to feel the joy and confidence I once had in the field. Even if I could never play softball again, I knew that I had a bright future and I was so much more than just an athlete. I had an ability and a passion that no injury could ever take away from me.

Mock Trial helped me to push through the physical therapy, counseling sessions, and doctor’s appointments for over two years. Without my injury, I never would have left my comfort zone and met different and interesting people - my teammates, attorneys, and judges. I learned to seek out new challenges and trust that I could achieve big things. I love the game of softball and I always will, but I am incredibly thankful that my injury led me on a path to finding new opportunities and learning about myself and what I could do.

I love being part of a team—something bigger than myself. My favorite thing is getting to play baseball with my best friends.

How have you remained positive through all the hard work you and your team put into this senior season that never came, but how has it also turned out to have a purpose and still be worth it?
I have remained positive through my faith in Christ, knowing that He has a plan and His purpose for me is better than my own plans, even when I don’t see it!

Tell me a little bit about your involvement with your church and how you have reached out to your community in different ways.
I’m in my church youth group and we have taken ministry trips in the past. Sometimes we spend time strengthening our walk with each other and the Lord, and sometimes we spend time being His hands and feet to others.

Picture

As an inspiration to others, what encouragement or advice would you give to inspire others to remain positive through times like these?
I’d say that if you don’t have a relationship with God, start there. All you have to do is ask Him to come into your life, and He will. He will give you meaning and purpose!

Trevor Schwartz - Arizona
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Gina Corona
Photography by Magical Memories by Michelle
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: My son, Trevor Schwartz, is inspiring to me on so many levels, but I guess every mother can say that about their son, but in this case it is true. My son is kind, patient and always willing to try anything. From a young age with his love of drawing and trains, he was so smart it scared me sometimes. He never received anything but A's throughout his Academic career, how much prouder could a mom be? As he got older, he developed another love and passion for basketball. With his speed and being so aggressive, some of the basketball dads would call him the Roadrunner. When he played club ball for the Jr. Suns, he got to play at the Phoenix Suns Arena for the Championship game. His eyes when he saw the court and winning was priceless! But of course, being who he is, he was more excited to do what he loved with his best friend. He played for Mesquite High School as a selfless player always giving the ball up to make others shine. And in this photo, he is the light of my favorite basketball player of all time!

What do you love most about playing basketball, and when did you start playing?
I started playing basketball when I was about ten years old. It wasn’t until I saw all my friends playing basketball at recess that I decided pick up playing this newfound sport. Shortly after, I joined a youth sports league for basketball, and realized that I was much worse than I thought I was. But that didn’t stop me from playing basketball for the next ten years, and I kept getting better. What I loved most about playing basketball through the years was discovering all the new ways that I could keep improving my skills and learning how to work with a team.

How have you managed to stay on top of your academics with all A’s while also committing your time to basketball also?
Although it was manageable, it was still a hassle to balance these two activities. When high school came around, it was even more difficult, especially since I had committed to all honors courses. However, I felt that I just couldn’t give up basketball altogether, so I continued to do my best to strive at both my academics and athletics. Ultimately, it just ended up working out, even with the hardships of staying up late doing homework assignments after practices and games.

Picture
Photography by Magical Memories by Michelle

What has been your favorite memory of playing basketball so far throughout the years?
My favorite memories have been with my high school teams, when we traveled to San Diego and Palm Springs for tournaments. I remember these trips fondly since I was able to go with some of my best friends, as well as meet new people and gain new relationships with them. Besides playing basketball with my dearest teammates, I enjoyed staying in the hotels with them and messing around on our spare time. We laughed, we joked, and we made lasting memories together without ever leaving the hotel rooms.

How have you continued to have the ability to always stay positive and look on the bright side of any situations that come your way?
I believe that you just have to have that kind of mindset, because I don’t remember anyone ever teaching me to think in this way, I kind of just acquired it. When something doesn’t go my way, I just accept it for what it is. Once it’s done, it’s done. You have to move on from moments like that. If we never moved on and just focused on the negative aspects of our past, we could never strive to be the best version of ourselves in the future. Once you accept life for what it really is and not for what you want it to be, life becomes less stressful and more manageable, at least in my opinion.

What advice would you give to teens to inspire them to remain positive in life?
Everyone has the power to determine their own path in which they will take on life, and they all control what they do in life, and how they go about doing it. However, there are situations that life throws at you that are out of anyone’s control. Once you can realize what you can and cannot control, I feel that you will be more positive. Of course, things might not go our way all the time, and it is okay to be frustrated about these things, it all comes down to how you respond to these challenges. Obviously, life isn’t fair, but that shouldn’t discourage you from moving forward.

Kyla Kabat

Kyla Kabat - Illinois
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Katherine Skrzypek
Photography by Emory Photography
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kyla Kabat is inspiring because she has a kind heart and is always willing to help others. She teaches dance classes at her dance studio and is a role model to all the dancers around her. She puts others before herself and is driven by her passion every day. Her hard work and dedication to dance is inspiring not only to dancer, but to anyone and everyone who comes across her path.
Picture
Photography by Emory Photography
What do you love most about dance and teaching dance classes at your studio?
I love the emotional output dance provides for me when times get tough or even when I can’t stop smiling. Being able to be a mentor for the young kids at my studio means a lot to me. I hope that my classes provide inspiration and an escape from reality to the kids that I get to meet along my journey as a teacher.

How have you become a role model to others through your passion for dance?
Whenever I have the free time, I spend as much time at my studio as possible. My love and passion of dance drives me to push myself into the dancer I want to be. Even when others may put me down, I don’t let that from chasing my dreams. I hope that my hard work can be seen by these kids and that they can develop the same passion with whatever they decide to do in life.

Tell me a little bit about what inspired you to become a dancer and a dance teacher.
My first experience dancing was while I was on vacation with my family when I was only two years old. The resort provided a program where kids could be able to dance on the stage before the nightly shows. I was scared at first by then my grandma grabbed my hand and went on stage with me. I naturally caught onto what the other kids were doing, and a smile was unable to be wiped off my face. I have been in dance classes ever since and have been developing an appreciation for it as I get older. For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a dance teacher. Having imaginary dance classes every day after school until my actual dance practices began. I have come across a variety of teachers and dancers along my dance career who have inspired my love for dance and teaching as well.

Picture
Photography by Emory Photography

How has your hard work and dedication to dance inspired others?
There would be multiple times in my dance journey where there would be people who would put me down and bully me. Some say they were “jealous” but the voice in my head kept telling me it’s because they’re right, I’m not good enough. These people would only push me to work harder and to prove them wrong. I may not be perfect, but no one is. I will do whatever it takes for me to be the best dancer in my current ability and to continue to strive towards my goals and who I want to be. I would spend countless hours watching videos of myself and critique myself to grow and improve. Dancers around me have seen this negativity that would surround me but would also see me push through this. My growth through being bullied inspires other dancers both older and younger at my studio. My story tells them to tune out the voice in their heads and to dance more for themselves. It’s not about dancing for someone’s approval or for a special award at competition. It’s about doing what makes you happy in life.

What goals do you have for your future, and how has your willingness to help others impacted what you want to do in life?
One day, I hope to be a studio owner and a professional choreographer. I hope to travel the world to teach kids how to dance and to provide an escape for them. My goal is to inspire the next generation and provide that outlet that dance has provided for me. I hope to bring joy and happiness to them while having the time of their lives with their friends by their sides.

What advice would you give to someone who is dedicated to their passion just like you, and how has your story inspired many through the joy dance has brought to you and your life?
There will be people in your lifetime who will do everything to knock you down and make you feel defeated. In times like these, remember why you keep going back to the thing that you love to do. Push yourself and work hard in order to prove them wrong and feel good about the person you are becoming. I have shared my story with many people and know it has changed them in a way to appreciate themselves and their current state of their artistry. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Whatever you do in life, make sure it makes you happy.

Picture
Photography by Emory Photography

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
One of the hardest things that I had to accomplish was self-confidence. I did this by working harder both in and out of the studio to be the dancer I’m trying to be. I started working out and eating right and stopped comparing myself to other dancers and Instagram models. I accepted that I love myself because I am unique and there is no one else like me.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Step out of your comfort zone. In will be more difficult to grow if you stay inside your box. Explore new things even if it may not be your cup of tea. You might end up enjoying it or even be inspired by it. Also, there will not always be someone there to hold your hand. Try things to benefit yourself no matter what anyone else may think of it. You only live once so take the chances of things that may never happen again.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I see myself graduating from Arizona State University with a dance and business degree from the honors college. I see myself choreographing for studios, high school teams, and companies near me and getting my name out there. I hope to be traveling with competition or convention around the world and meeting dancers who have the same love and passion for dance as I do.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to play my violin and play in my schools orchestra. I love learning how to play music and to challenge myself with technique and skill in this area as well.

Picture
Photography by Ron Mckinney

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I do not have a hidden talent, but if I do I have not discovered it yet.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
How to make my grandmas secret recipe of Polish Pierogi because they are the best food on planet earth and it needs to be shared with the rest of the world.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Be in a TV show/ movie/ game show
2. Travel to Bora Bora
3. Swim under a waterfall

Who do you find inspiring?
Someone who inspires me is one of the graduated seniors who danced at my studio. She was my duet partner and I have learned so much from her before she left. She had a unique style of dance that was special to her and was not afraid to go outside her comfort zone. She has her own way of thinking and will not let anyone sway her opinions and ideals. She inspires me to be a better dancer and person, and I hope to have the same effect on others as she has on me.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe that my positivity is something that inspires others. I always check in on everyone and am always there to lend a helping hand. I will always be there for anyone and everyone whether they are close with me or not. I let my love for dance drive me to become better and have a great time doing it. I’m always looking for ways to improve and try to help my peers with their passions as well.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
There is a lot more to my story, but I hope this insight on my life will inspire other teenagers and artists to never give up and to push towards their goals and dreams.

Kendall Buff

Kendall Buff - North Carolina
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Robin Miller Photography
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kendall Buff graduated top in her class after putting in hard work and dedication all four years of high school. She has participated in multiple clubs, played volleyball, was a Junior Marshal, and was nominated to be on the 2019 Homecoming Court at East Burke High School. While at East Burke, Kendall was nominated for many awards and scholarships. She will be attending Appalachian State University in the Fall to get her nursing degree. Kendall has worked hard every day of high school and throughout her life from volunteering to school, to be the best person she can be.
Picture

What inspired you to start playing volleyball? Why?
Ever since I was a little girl, sports were something I was very drawn to, especially volleyball. My mom played volleyball in middle school and high school, so this was a way for us to bond, and I easily began to love the sport. My mom was the one who first got me involved in volleyball and was even my coach for a few years.

What is your favorite memory you have made with your volleyball team?
There are so many incredible memories that I have made with my volleyball team. If I had to pick just one, it would be spending time with everyone on game days. Some of us would go eat before games and we would have the best time, laughing and enjoying the time we were getting to spend together as a team. Being able to bond together like this was what made the volleyball season so enjoyable.

Picture

Tell me more about being a Junior Marshal. What did this role involve?
Being a Junior Marshal was always a goal of mine through high school. I spent numerous hours doing homework and studying to become a Junior Marshal. I was top 10 in my class as both a Junior and Senior. As a Junior Marshal, I was able to help with the class of 2019's graduation ceremony and be a part of their big day. Being a Junior Marshal was a goal that I was able to accomplish through all my hard work and determination.

You mentioned you volunteer in your community, what projects have you participated in, and which was your favorite?
I have spent numerous hours volunteering for people in my community. I have helped with church pantries, senior citizen groups, and many other organizations. My favorite was Operation Christmas Child. We were able to get together and create shoeboxes with toys and other necessities that children need. This was my favorite because I was able to help others that might not get anything for Christmas.

Picture

I know you participate in many other clubs, what other clubs do you participate in, and how do you balance all of this with school?

I participate in numerous clubs at school such as Anchor Club, HOSA, PIE Club, and Spirit Club. It can be difficult to find the time for homework and these extracurriculars, but I can balance all of it by prioritizing my schoolwork. Being able to do that helps me make sure to get my work done first, then do the other enjoyable activities!

Picture

What is one goal you have for your future?
One goal I have for my future is to become a nurse. I enjoy helping people and taking care of others, so I think being a nurse is something that will help me feel like I am giving back to others. Since the breakout of COVID-19, it makes me wish I was able to help those being affected by it.

Abigail Kent - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Kristina Kent
Photography by Krystal Kaye Images
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Abigail Kent is an amazing young lady! She has Cerebral Palsy, but she doesn't let that stop her! You name it, she's done it! Student council, theater, cheer, varsity soccer manager, scuba diving with sharks she doesn't let anyone tell her she can't! Abby was once told she would never be very good at math; well she now has the highest grade in her class and was even nominated "math student of the month"! Abby is graduating in the top 15% of her class and plans to go on to college to study theater.
Picture
Photography by Krystal Kaye Images

What challenges have you overcome through having Cerebral Palsy, and how have you kept a positivity outlook on life?
The main challenge I have overcome is people’s attitudes towards my disability. People often underestimate me or make assumptions about my intelligence based on the fact that they see the wheelchair, or the spazzy body first. To me, having cerebral palsy is my normal, so I think I have the same outlook on life as any other teenager. Sometimes it is positive and sometimes it is not so positive, but it really doesn’t have much to do with me having cerebral palsy.

Tell me about the different extracurricular activities you are involved in including student council and being manager of your varsity soccer team.
I was in Student Council my freshman year. I helped with decorating for the Homecoming dance by attaching a wagon to my wheelchair and helping move the heavy stuff. I was in Theatre all through high school and participated in the school play for the last 3 years. During the plays, I was the assistant stage manager. I was inducted into the International Thespian Society my junior year (TROUPE 4101 FOR LIFE)! I was also the manager of the varsity girls’ soccer team my sophomore and junior years, and was member of the sparkle cheer squad all 4 years of high school.

Picture
Photography by Krystal Kaye Images

How has your dedication to math resulted in you having the highest grade in your class while also being nominated as “math student of the month”?
I was told my entire life that I would not be good at math because of the way I learn. I was in special education for math up until my Sophomore year, when I had a teacher notice that I was really good at math. We decided to try regular math classes and it turns out, I am really good at it! I was determined to make sure everyone knew I was good at math so I studied hard and did my best every day!

What was your experience like scuba diving with sharks, and what inspired your love of sharks?
Scuba diving with sharks was a little scary but so much fun! I dove and swam with nurse sharks. I have even let a nurse shark lay in my lap while it was fed and I kissed it’s head too! I have loved sharks for as long as I can remember. My favorite shark is the Mako shark. I think sharks are misunderstood because people automatically think they are mean and vicious creatures just by looking at them, kind of like how people assume I am dumb or don’t know what is going on just by looking at me.

Picture
Photography by Krystal Kaye Images

Tell me more about your plans for the future including going to college to study your passion for theater.
I plan to start taking basic classes at NCTC in the fall. I also plan on joining a super cool theater troupe that is just for people with disabilities to get experience in the field.

Picture
Photography by Krystal Kaye Images

If you could plan a model group or ad campaign for models in wheelchairs or with disabilities what would this look like? Be creative tell me everything about it!
I think the perfect ad campaign for people with disabilities would be basically just a normal ad campaign in which the people in the pictures just happen to have a disability. I don’t think people with disabilities should be portrayed as special or fragile. We are normal people who do normal things, and I think that we should be represented as that. For example, two friends having coffee and “oh, look, that girl is a wheelchair user!” So basically a shoot that shows people with disabilities as normal everyday people.

Haleigh Schmidt – South Dakota
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Angie Vinson Photography
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Haleigh Schmidt has been playing softball since she was five! Her parents, brother and grandparents have been her biggest fans and she is incredible. She transferred schools her senior year in the hopes to continue her softball career into college. Then Covid 19 hit and her senior softball season hasn’t turned out the way she expected. Through it all she has held her head high and continues to work hard at softball and academics, quarantine style. She will be graduating magna cum laude and I have no doubt she will rise through this pandemic to be better than ever! NEVER QUIT!
Picture
Photography by Angie Vinson Photography

What inspired you to want to start playing softball? How old were you when you started?
I started t-ball when I was five years old. In the small town where I live, the only option I had was to play baseball with the boys. I played a couple years of baseball and did not want to continue, so my parents registered me for ASA softball in the nearest city and I have continued to play since then.

What is your favorite memory from playing softball?
My favorite memory is 2019 state softball. My travel team won the state title.
Picture
Photography by Angie Vinson Photography

Has your season been canceled?
Our season has not been completely cancelled as of right now. We were unsure if we were going to be able to play softball this year but things are starting to open back up and we just found out that we will begin practicing this week with social distancing and small groups. Only half of our team will get to practice at a time, but I am so excited to be back on the field. Our games are set to begin on June 1, 2020, depending how our COVID numbers look at that time.

How are you handling and pushing through having your senior year cut short?
I have just kept a sense of humor, a positive mind set and continued to work out daily to stay in shape for softball.

What is one goal that you have for your future involving softball?
One goal I have is to never forget the lessons that my team and softball has taught me. I will never forget my teammates and the bond that we have after playing together for so long. My team became my family and I am so grateful for them.

How did you get into playing softball? Who has inspired you to start and keep playing the sport?
When I was younger, I was still experimenting with sports and I found my love for softball when I started to play rec ball at the age of 6. When going further into the sport, at the age of 12 my coach stuck me out into the outfield, and I found my passion for it that season. My parents inspired me to start and keep playing the sport by giving me confidence and support throughout my years of playing softball.

How are you managing with having your senior year season being cut short? What pushes you to keep going through this hard time?
I am managing having my senior year cut short by staying on top of my workouts that I have daily throughout week for school. I am also going to hitting and defense lessons with my Coach Brittany. My friends and family help me push through this hard time. I still get to make more memories with friends and family.

Picture
Photography by Myranda Fultz

When did you start doing competitive gymnastics and cheerleading? Tell me more about what the atmosphere and competition process is like.
I started gymnastics when I was 2 and a half years old in the mommy and me class. I started competing at the age of 6 and went to state multiple times and regionals. I placed second on uneven bars, fourth on vault, and I had the highest overall score in my age group for Indiana. I started cheerleading in high school my sophomore year to try it out but retired my junior year. The competition atmosphere and competitions are almost like an adrenaline rush. When you stand in front of the event and judges, your mind is going through what your routine is and what you specifically need to do to accomplish it.

What prompted you to want to major in nursing? What is one goal you have for your future?

When I was younger, my Uncle got in an accident and was left paralyzed known as a quadriplegic. He was in the hospital for a long time and when he got out, he needed nurses and doctors to help him get his therapy and medications he needed. Also, my grandma recently passed with stage 4 lung cancer. Seeing them go through these sad and rough times, my love for helping others has greatly increased and I want to be able to help those in need. My one goal in the future in this field is to be helpful to others and make sure they are as comfortable as they can be.

Vivian Nguyen - Texas
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Quang Nguyen
Photography by Victoria Nguyen
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Vivian Nguyen is a charismatic force to be reckoned with who pushes herself to exceed her limits. As a published writer and valedictorian of her middle school, Vivian excels academically. She was deemed one of the top 20 writers in the country as a finalist during the national TIME for Kids Magazine Kid Reporter Search. Furthermore, Vivian started her own business at 14, creating custom tie-dye pieces, donating a portion of her profits to charity. Her company, DyenosaurApparel, has racked hundreds of orders nationwide and from her community and received tens of thousands of views on social media.
Picture
Tell me about your business DyenosaurApparel and what inspired you to start your own business for creating custom tie-dye pieces.
DyenosaurApparel began as a small community service endeavor when I was 14. My school’s National Junior Honor Society chapter needed to raise money for charity, but we weren’t receiving enough donations. As Vice President, I decided to go a step further and take matters into my own hands. I began by making scrunchies and selling them at school to raise money. With my friends’ support, my little charity project garnered a lot of attention on social media. Fast forward a year, I’ve been fortunate enough to receive hundreds of orders from my community and across the country!

What do you love most about being a published writer, and what opportunities have you received through your gift for writing?
Being a published writer has given me the opportunity to share my voice, express my emotions, and stand for my beliefs. Writing has opened many doors for me in my educational career. I was deemed one of the top 20 writers in the country during the Time For Kids Reporter Contest and received the Barbara Roach Writing Award.

Picture
How were you able to manage your own business while immersing yourself in community volunteer work and being valedictorian of your middle school simultaneously?
Simply put, I made a schedule and stuck to it. Balancing my business and community service on top of school was definitely difficult but keeping a planner and sticking to a routine has been integral to juggling schoolwork and my life outside of school. If I’m being completely honest, there have been some long, tiring nights. But there’s nothing a little caffeine can’t fix!

What extracurricular activities are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about involving myself in my community and school as much as possible. At school, I’m especially devoted to biomedical sciences. Fortunately, I attend James Martin High School in Arlington, Texas, which has a specialized program for students who want to pursue a career in the STEM fields. Through their STEM program, I’ve been able to advance to state with HOSA, a biomedical competition, participate in GirlsWhoCode, and help plan a career conference as a member of the STEM Leadership Club.

How have your achievements, along with your determination and dedication to all that you are involved in, inspired other teens to become active just like you?
Before I began my shop, what hindered me the most was my fear of failure. If I had seen others my age take initiative and become successful, I would’ve been more eager to venture into what is now my greatest achievement. After DyenosaurApparel took off, many of my peers asked me for advice to start their own businesses. It’s like a ripple effect. By achieving my own goals, I can encourage others to reach for theirs.

Riley Sakamoto – California
Interview by Claire Path
Nomination by Janet Sakamoto
Photography by Brooke Shalae Photography
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: 17 year old Riley is an inspiring teen for many reasons: she has been influential to her school by being a part of the cheer team, choir, and leadership team. Riley has the goal of becoming a nurse because she broke her arm and tore her radial nerve, so she wants to help other people like her.

What do you love most about being a part of the cheer team, and coaching younger girls at your school?

I really love the influence that I get to show the other girls. Cheer is a team sport, everyone needs to work together, trust each other, and be in sync. It is such a great way to teach girls these skills and to also learn them myself.

Tell me a little bit about the different extracurricular activities you are involved in including your role on the leadership team, and what you enjoy most about being a part of different extracurricular activities.
I have been a part of the leadership team at my school for two years. It is called SALT and it stands for Service and Leadership Team. I am a part of the cabinet this year. The team plans events for the school, supports school activities, and really we love on our school. As cabinet, I lead the other members who do most of the planning while I work with administration. I also was a part of choir, women's ensemble, and honor choir.

What inspired your passion and goal for wanting to become a nurse?

When I was seven years old, I broke my elbow on the trampoline. I had to have surgery but once my cast was taken off, I could not move my wrist. I then had to have another surgery because the doctor found out that I tore my radial nerve. After this I went to physical therapy for six months. Because of this, I have a heart that wants to help others just like me.

Can you tell me more about the volunteer work you do for your school?
My older sister is a first-grade teacher and I volunteer in her classroom. I love to help her with all things that she needs like grading papers, cleaning her classroom, setting it up, even sharpening pencils.
I also have volunteered in Mexico to build houses at a place called Mexico Caravan Ministries.
Picture
Photography by Brooke Shalae Photography

As an inspiration, how has your influence and involvement in your community inspired others to become active in their communities just like you?
Since I am a cheer coach, I have mentored many girls who want to become someone just like me who can inspire others. Through my leadership team, members of the team are inspired to be a part of the community and do community events. In honor choir, I would sing at different places in the community to bless those who live here. With my life, many young girls have looked up to me and told me that they want to be just like me when they grow up.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing that I have ever accomplished is regaining movement in my hand. I went through a lot of doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I really leaned on my family to get through this time. After the doctors figured out what was wrong with me, it was a great time. Even after surgery, I went through physical therapy for six months. These were hard times; we all did not know what I was going to be able to do. But, with my family as my support system, I was able to gain almost full motion back.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
The advice I would give to someone is to be perseverant. If you set your goals, take small steps to accomplish them and soon your big goal will be accomplished.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
A lot can change in five years. The first place that I see myself is being a nurse. I would have my Bachelor of Science Nursing and be working in a hospital. Some other goals that I have would be to start a family after this. I want to be a hard-working girl who has love for what she is doing.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
My favorite pastime is anything that I do to spend time with my family. I love my family and they are such a big part of my life, I love to spend time with them.

After hearing about the tragedy of Hurricane Dorian, I knew something could be done to help and I thought about a relief project to help the victims.

My leadership team helped make the project more than a dream. I approved every task done. I created the flyers and helped when needed.

How was the project successful? The project could not have been more successful. The students and staff collected over 500 items for donation. Everyone was filled with joy after we made such a change in the Bahamas.

Jenna Lowery - Missouri
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Stephanie Lowery
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Driven, passionate, determined, leadership, optimistic, patient, loving, understanding, compassion, strength....just a few of the characteristics this beautiful young lady has carried throughout her entire life. She has been a role model to her two younger siblings, as she navigates this challenging time of uncertainty & the emotions of "missing out" on all the "experiences" that her siblings will one day get to have. I have watched her handle the ups and down with dignity & a new found sense of maturity inspiring me to be the best version of myself I can be, not only for myself but for her, her two sisters and my husband.

How are you making the best of the situation you are in right now, especially being a senior?

To make the best of the situation that we are all in I try to keep myself busy so I am not just sitting and dwelling on all of this. I focus on the positives in my life, like my family, friends, and all the good memories I have had the past four years of High school. I have used this time to spend more time with my two younger sisters, and I will say it has really brought us all closer to one another.

What are some activities you have been doing to pass the time through this pandemic?
I have spent most of my time doing artwork and drawing. I love to draw; it is a really good way to pass the time for me. Additionally, it is something that helps me gather my thoughts and relax. The biggest project I have tackled would have to be my closet wall. I drew henna designs all over it and then went back and painted it. I have also drawn things for others like my friends and family.
Picture
"This is the Henna wall in my closet, photo taken by Steph aka mom" - Jenna

What are you most looking forward to doing after this pandemic is over?

After this pandemic is all over I am really looking forward to seeing the rest of my family. We are all super close and I am very thankful to have such a supportive family. I am also looking forward to seeing all of my friends again. Especially from my dental assisting school sense we had a last day of school together without even knowing it.

Who or what is inspiring you to get through this tough time?
I would have to say my family and my tech teacher are the main ones who are inspiring me to get through this pandemic. Without the love and support from my family I have no idea where I would be right now. The support from some of my best friends is also very helpful knowing that they all want me to succeed. My tech teacher has pushed me to do my best and continues to help me prepare for my Mo Basics test that I will take after this pandemic is over. Her support has really strengthened my confidence, I would be very stressed during this time trying to keep everything organized without her help.

What are you going to study in college? Why did you choose this?

I plan on attending St. Louis Community College in the fall. I will continue my education in dentistry and major in dental hygiene. My plan is to work as an assistant while attending college and then become a hygienist. I am planning and hoping to work as a hygienist right after college. Ever since I was younger, I would always want to see what the ortho or the dentist was doing in my mouth. I also love helping and working with people and children. My original plan was to become a dentist, but throughout my two years attending South Technical High School for assisting and shadowing/interning with dental offices, I have come to realize that hygiene is my passion rather than becoming an actual dentist.

What is one goal that you have for your future?
A goal that I have for the future is to take the Mo Basics test and become a certified dental assistant, so that I can start working in an office and get experience.

Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Raela MCCrory is a Senior at New Diana High School. She is an officer in the FFA, and a Varsity Cheerleader. She also loves to Dance. She is very resilient. Being an Army Brat tends to make you that way. Raela has moved around from kindergarten up until her sophomore year. She has a very kind heart and is a great listener for her friends. She always overcomes every obstacle put in her way. Raela inspires me to always see the best in people.

What do you love most about being a varsity cheerleading and dance?
I love that I have become very well rounded in both activities and it has allowed me to put myself out in the open a lot more as an individual.

Tell me about your role as an officer in FFA and what inspired you to be a part of it.
My role as an FFA officer was being a sentinel for my FFA chapter. A sentinel is someone who helps the Vice President conduct meetings and stands by the door at meetings and events to greet guests. The things that inspired me to be a part of the FFA was I wanted to be a better leader and I wanted to inspire more people through the FFA.

How have you handled having to move since you were in kindergarten up until your sophomore year, and how have you learned to make the most out of it?

It was hard at first but I soon learned to adapt to the places I was moving to. Now that I am a senior and it has been two years since I have moved anywhere I have realized all the memories I’ve made are never going anywhere and that’s what helped me handle all the moving around. I have learned that even if I was going to stay somewhere for only a year or two, I made the best out of the situation I was in.

How have the decisions you have made in your life made you a better person?
They have allowed me to see everything as it is and allow myself to take everything in. It has also allowed me to not hold grudges or let my anger get the best of me.

Picture
Photography by Rustic Jewel Photography

How have the obstacles you have overcome inspired others?

The obstacles that I have overcome have allowed me to inspire others to turn it into a positive situation by always reminding my friends and family that there will be better days. That they will get through the obstacle that they are going through. Something that I always remember to keep my spirits high is that “there may be storms in your life but the sun will always come back out from behind the clouds”.

Colton Weier - Arizona
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Magical Memories by Michelle
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Colton Weier has always been driven to succeed. It did not matter if it was school, football, volunteering, friendship, his job, or family. He has always put everything he had into being all he can be. He has many personal achievements, but when you can be an influence on others, that is what really sets the achievement apart from other successes.

Why did you want to start playing football?

I wanted to be part of a team sport that works hard and finds results from hard work.

What is your favorite memory from football?
My favorite memory from football was this past season. It was my senior season and I was elected as team captain. We started off the season slow with a 2-3 record after losing our homecoming senior game to a team we should have never lost too. We had struggled getting the guys to fully commit and work as a brotherhood. That night started a new leaf for our team.

The coaches told us after the game that we need to either make changes or they did not want to coach. As team captain I lead the conversation, talking to each person about why they were on the team and what was holding them back from being the best for the team. The next morning, we talked for three hours, talked with those who had not been 100% and if they want to stay, we needed 100%. If not, it was time go a different direction.

Not one person left. We went to practices five days a week, full pads and long hours. The moral changed, teamwork, and even the players wanted to be better on and off the field. I mentored and tutored many to help them be the best they could be. We went 5-0 after that, became region champions, and made it to the quarterfinals. More than winning was the brotherhood we all gained from learning how to be a team and be there for each other no matter what.

Picture
Photography by Magical Memories by Michelle

What is one lesson that football has taught you?
It has taught me that hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard. If you work hard enough at something you will have success.

What is one goal that you have when you play in college?
My goal is to be able to make a difference while I am there. Not only help to improve the football program but to help better people’s lives. If I can help motivate people to make this world a better place my goal will be accomplished.

Picture

Is football something you could see yourself doing after college?
I would love to play in the NFL as every young man that plays football would like to do but my career goal is to be an Anesthesiologist. I have worked very hard in school and will continue so I get accepted in medical school.

The world is a crazy place right now and I’m sure this has impacted your senior year, what or who is inspiring you to keep going?

The world is a chaotic place right now and I find it so devastating for many that have lost loved ones or their jobs and livelihood. My parents, trainer, and friends have all helped in inspiring me through this tough time.

What is one thing you have been doing to pass the time during quarantine?
I have had the opportunity to work with my father since school has closed for the year. He has a construction company that does home remodeling and additions. It has been a great learning experience to work with my hands, my dad, and learn many different trades that will be beneficial throughout my life. I have also been able to continue my personal training with my trainer who inspires me every day to be my best, work hard, and find my inner strength.

Nomination and Photography by Casey Griffin
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Dasyn J Hores is a senior at Martins Ferry High School where he is president of his class, on the honor roll and a three-sport athlete lettering in Football, basketball, and baseball. Dasyn has received many honors and accolades in all three sports which he has worked extremely hard to accomplish. He is a member at The Experience Church where he serves on the Hospitality Team. In his spare time Dasyn will dress up in superhero costumes for parties or just a face time call to a young boy who is having a rough day. He is willing to go the extra mile to put a smile on a young child’s face. He is an outstanding role model for young kids to look up to.

How have you managed playing three sports, president of your class, and being on the honor roll?
Managing sports, grades and meetings wasn’t always easy. I love being a three-sport athlete, I love the competition and the brotherhood that playing sports has given me. In order to play sports, I had to maintain good grades so I knew how important it was to make the time to study and complete homework on time. I also knew that my class depended on me to be a reliable class president. They voted for me so letting them down wasn’t an option.

What has been your favorite memory of playing three sports?
My favorite memory was my junior year baseball playoff game. I was up to bat with 2 outs and hit a base clearing double setting my team up for the win.
Football is huge in our little town of Martins Ferry so setting the school record for receiving yards career and single season is a big deal.

What are you looking forward to most about attending Wheeling University where you will play football and major in special needs?
I am looking forward to playing football. It has always been a dream of mine to play at the college level. I knew I needed a big senior year and to stay healthy to have colleges interested in offering me a scholarship to play. I played more than half of my junior year hurt so staying healthy was a must. I set goals and knew if I achieved them, I could play at the collegiate level. My hard work and determination paid off, so I am overly excited to play for Wheeling University.
I am anxious to get started in education as well so I can continue to work with kids. I have a special place in my heart for kids that need the extra attention and are “different”. We are all different in our own way and I want them to know that so I’m excited to teach them to love themselves for who they are.

Picture
Photography by Evert Briggs

How have you become a big inspiration to others through your ability to brighten people’s day with your positive and caring personality?

I would say that you tend to get looked up to by being an athlete. Just because I am an athlete doesn’t mean that I am any better than anyone else. In high school there were kids that would get made fun of. I was never ok with that so if I saw it or heard it, I stuck up for them. When you get to know them you find that they have a story, we all have a story. You don’t know what people go through behind closed doors so don’t judge. I developed a friendship with these kids, and I hope I helped them get through there high school days.

What do you love most about dressing up as a superhero for parties for kids or to cheer them up, and has it influenced you to want to work with kids in the future?
What I love most about dressing up as a superhero is the smiles it brings to the kids’ faces. Being a reason a child smiles is so rewarding. I have one special little boy whom I hold dear to my heart that faces challenges every day and continues to overcome obstacles that he is told he will never be able to do. I may be his superhero, but little does he realize he is mine. He gives me the motivation to push through in times when I am feeling weak or incapable. I couldn’t thank him enough for what he has done for me and I will forever be his number one fan. I would say that having the opportunity to dress up as a superhero for a kid has influenced what career I want to pursue in college. As I know that working with special needs children will be a challenge, I believe that I am up for the challenge.

Tell me a little bit about being a member at the Experience Church and in ways that you serve through being a part of it?
The Experience Church isn’t just a church, it is home and we are all family. I am grateful and blessed to have amazing pastors and a home outside of home to be a part of. I serve on the hospitality team every couple weeks with my entire family. We are the first and last faces people see when they enter and exit the church. I am a people person, so I love being able to greet everyone as they come in the doors. I have learned that just a smile can really go a long way.

What advice would you give someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to be goal oriented. Setting goals will help set your mind to where you want to be and how to get there.
Picture
Photography by Casey Griffin

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I have recently just found out that I am really good at shooting clay pigeons.

If you could publicly present any topic to your peers, what would it be and why?
I would talk about how to strive to be the best version of yourself every day. We need to focus on being confident, kind and caring. God made us all unique in our own way so love yourself so you can love others.
