Emerie McLendon - Alabama Interview by Olivia Bush Nomination by Jade McLendon Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
The Nomination: Emerie McLendon started a school wide project to help victims affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. Items such as canned goods, toiletries, self-hygiene products, etc. were collected. Over 500 items were donated. The relief project was a success.
How did you come up with the idea of the project for Hurricane Dorian Relief? After hearing about the tragedy of Hurricane Dorian, I knew something could be done to help and I thought about a relief project to help the victims.
What steps were taken to make this project successful? My leadership team helped make the project more than a dream. I approved every task done. I created the flyers and helped when needed.
How was the project successful? The project could not have been more successful. The students and staff collected over 500 items for donation. Everyone was filled with joy after we made such a change in the Bahamas.
When you realized how big of a success this project was how did you feel? I felt like I accomplished something when I found out, but of course I did not accomplish it alone.
What is one goal that you have for your future? One goal I have for my future is I want to get my driver’s license. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 9 and I cannot drive until I am 6 months seizure free.
What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it? The hardest thing I’ve accomplished was recovering from my femur break in 2016. It took a lot of strength and faith to get 100% better.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future? In 5 years, I imagine myself in college, hopefully living my dream of becoming a graphic designer or a neurology nurse.
What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn't in your nomination? My favorite activity is soccer. I have played for almost 10 years. Soccer is my stress reliever and favorite free time activity.
Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? I can impersonate the sound of Scuttle’s voice from The Little Mermaid.
3 things on your bucket list 1. Go to Bora Bora. 2. Travel the world. 3. Move to California.
Who do you find inspiring? The person I find most inspiring is Alex Morgan because not only does she have the opportunity to play on two different high honor soccer teams, but she supports causes by making jerseys in their honor or dedicating cleats.
What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring? I think I inspire others because I am always wanting to help and make a positive change.
