What would you most like to be interviewed about/what should we definitely know about you in 100 words or less?
I'm open to everything. Talking about our run up through districts in softball and our trip to states in cheer is something that means a lot to me. I have also attended softball camp at FSU for the past few years. Something a lot of people don't know about me is that I am very artistic. I love art and painting in general. During covid I especially got into it. It was a form of therapy almost for me. I also manage to keep up with my life while having anxiety and ADHD. I also have a great relationship with my family, especially my siblings.

Tell us more about your softball career.
I started playing softball when I was 10 in little league. I am the starting centerfielder for my varsity softball team and the backup catcher. I love both positions because I am always moving and feel like am a part of the action! Softball is a huge part of my life and I am hoping to be able to play while in college.

What was it like running up through districts?
It was amazing! We were so nervous the entire time because our school had never made it as far as we did. But, we believed in ourselves and that we could do it and we did! A lot of us have played together for a long time. We played Little League and travel ball together. It was great to be able to do that with girls who I have been friends with for so long.

When did you start cheering and what is your team like? What are states like?
I started cheering only last year. Going to states was amazing. We never imagined that we would get to go that far. It was in this huge stadium with tv monitors everywhere. There were so many great teams there competing. It still feels like a dream. Walking out on the mat the first time was so scary and exciting all at once. We had a few things change right before our performance and I ended up flying in one our stunts. We were all just so excited when they called our name and told us our place in the competition!

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
My all-time favorite memory was when we took the day of practice before our run through districts and did some team bonding. We played games and just had fun together. I played a game called “Barrel Racing” and was partnered with my teammate Mason. They have to pick up your legs while you race forward on your hands. We crushed everyone in the race. It was so funny to watch everyone try and stay up and not fall!

We would love to see a picture of an art piece you created!
I made this painting for my all-time favorite person, my Papa. He was having heart surgery a year ago and I made this for him to make him feel better. Now he is healthier than ever and the painting is still hanging in his house.

What are some of the things you love doing with your family?
My family and I love doing anything outdoors. I love going side by side riding with my dad and absolutely anything to do at the river. We also like to stay in a cabin in the woods every year. I have gone to a softball camp at Florida State University and this past year I ever took 2 of my friends with my sister and I. Hopefully maybe I will even attend college there.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I live my life every day with anxiety and ADHD. Sometimes it makes doing everything I do harder, but in some ways, I am better for it. I've learned to deal with it and manage it. It is especially true during playing sports!

What advice would you give to someone who doesn't have ADHD and isn't used to being around someone who does?
I was officially diagnosed with ADHD last year. Not a lot of people knew that I was being tested. I’ve always been very enthusiastic and some of my peers would talk meanly behind my back because they didn’t understand. My advice would be just to take it in and really think about what is going on with that person. We can’t help being the way we are, and bullying isn’t the answer. Since I have talked to my friends about it, they are much more understanding and patient.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would like to present to a group on mental health. A lot of teens these days struggle with depression and anxiety. I would like to help them understand ways to cope and figure out if any of their friends are struggling their health too. I personally know several teens affected by this daily. I struggle with anxiety, depression, and ADHD and have figured out ways to help myself overcome it.

What was your photo shoot like with ProPoint Media?
My photo shoot with ProPoint Media was really fun and I enjoyed it a lot! Dave really helped put me at ease and taught me how to get used to posing and making faces for the photos. We laugh a lot and have so much fun. I even have a funny photo of me making a double chin!

What made you choose them and what did you love most about it?
Dave has taken my photos for sports for 3 years now and the photos always turn out great. He said I was a natural with getting my photo taken and we have complete trust in him. I am really interested in learning photography, and he shows me things as we go. It has really helped to build my confidence too.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
Attend college at FSU and earn a degree in early elementary education. I would like to continue to play sports in college and also adopt a French bulldog and name him Buster.

Laylah Griggs - Alabama
Nomination and Photography by Sawsan Williams Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Laylah wears kindness on her sleeve. She is compassionate, understanding, and always available to lend a hand. Since she was a little girl, she has loved to sing, dance, and dress up like her favorite characters from books or television shows. This passion developed into a creative soul, sensitive to all those around her, generously giving her time to whoever needs it. Our entire extended family are extremely proud of Laylah and excited to see how she can make a significant impact for her community.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I love to sing and draw! It’s my favorite way of self-expression that really allows me to relax and let loose.

What type of music do you like to sing and what is your favorite song to sing?
I love listening to all kinds of music! I love the art pop genre because of how mystical it sounds. My favorite song I’m listening to right now is Soft Universe by Aurora. She’s always my go to when I feel like unwinding!

Tell us about a favorite drawing of yours.
I don’t have any pictures of my drawings that I could give, but I have a painting! My favorite one I’ve done is my daffodil painting. I think we tend to forget that art isn’t always about improving but done for the sake of creating it!

Picture
"This painting was done during quarantine by me because I missed going out in the fields with my friends. I couldn’t wait to be outside again!" - Laylah

What are your plans for the future?
I’m passionate about going into the medical field and becoming an osteologist, especially because a lot of my family is in the medical field and is currently serving our community during the pandemic. It helped me understand that my true passion is helping others and that I want to join them in their passion!

What else should we know about you?
Throughout my high school career, I have excelled in academics. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from James Clements High School in Madison, AL this year.
Currently I’m working as a medical technician at Madison hospital where I will spend a year serving my community, gaining knowledge and preparing for her college career. Following that experience, I will attend the University of Alabama, Birmingham where I will study osteology! I’m very thankful to have a supportive family who loves me!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love to garden! I once went to a community garden with peers from my school to go rake weeds from their garden areas. Seeing the plants flourish puts the biggest smile on my face! It’s also just a great way to bond with friends and family by working together and seeing, the fruits of your labor, literally!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I think we should start community compost bins! They are a great way to reduce waste and help the environment. I persist in doing so because it takes topsoil up to a thousand years to create a new layer, so this is a great way to make your own soil instead! It also helps bring a community together by: working to make the compost bin, maintain it properly, and using the soil for gardening or planting. It helps the earth by helping yourself!

She plans to work for a short season at a local hospital and continue her education to become a registered nurse and specialize in cardiology.

Tell us more about your nursing career. Why did you choose that path and what is your biggest goal?
I chose nursing so I could get answers. My mom has fibromyalgia and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). More so when I was younger, she would go into what are called Fibro-flares. I didn’t know at the time that GAD caused her Fibro-flares, so I clustered her symptoms to research what disease could be the culprit. My search resulted in many different possible answers but no solution. I wanted to find a reason behind the pain and distress she was in. By becoming a nurse, I believed that I could help others find a reason and solution for their pain.

What have you done so far to help you in your nursing career?
Recently I have applied and gotten a job as a nurse extern in a hospital. This job has allowed me to assist and work alongside other nurses. So far, it’s been an amazing experience. Extremely tiring, but truly amazing. It has allowed me to gain even more experience than I have in a clinical setting. I have rubbed shoulders with some of the best nurses, I believe, in the world. I hope to one day be as knowledgeable and perceptive as they are in my nursing career
Tell us more about your drawings. What do you love to draw the most and with what type of medium? We would love to see a picture!
I love drawing cartoon characters. I love the exaggerated features and the relatable expressions they possess. My siblings and I have had little to no art lessons. We pretty much learned from each other’s mistakes to form our own unique drawing styles. My go-to drawing medium is a mechanical pencil and a thin-tipped Sharpie. I usually use sketchbooks to house my artwork, but there’s nothing wrong with notebook or printer paper every once in a while. I just enjoy expressing myself through drawing. It helps me decompress and regroup.

Share with us your running experience. Do you run for fun or do you have higher and higher goals? For example, have you ever run a 5K or more?
I actually used to run track and cross country in high school. Because there were so many races, I didn’t enjoy track that much. With cross-country, you only have one race to get ready for; one race to give your all. I enjoyed cross country not only because of the one race but also because of the long bus rides and the new people I met. During the summer, I ran 5ks with my older sister and my dad. It was a good way to stay in shape for the next season and a good time to hang with my dad.

What do you like to write about and what has been your favorite plot?
I enjoy writing about different life experiences in my blog, journaling to express the things on my mind, and writing short stories. Writing short stories is so much fun. Forming the different characters and brainstorming the different plots is quite invigorating. Only one of my books is typed, waiting to be proofread. The other needs lots of proofreading, plot changing, and overall help. When I write, I want it to mean something; I want to inspire people to think. I believe many can write books, but only a few can make you think about the topic at hand.

Nomination: Yoshiko Slater, a soccer goddess, fashion-icon, and Marie Curie equivalent rolled into one heel-wearing woman. Her beauty is anything but skin deep though, and her passion, kindness, and confidence always shine through. What work of yours was published in which Chemical Ed. Journal?
The abstract a few of my classmates and I worked on was accepted by the 2020 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education, and the 2021 25th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference. We have also presented our work at the American Chemical Society National Conference this year. We started this project with Flint, MI, and Baltimore, MD, in mind. Our abstract: Water, Water Everywhere, but Not a Drop to Drink, focuses on creating an inexpensive lead filter that can attach to a water bottle or sink. It removes the harmful contaminate from drinking water and alerts people when it is no longer working. This research also includes a novel spectrochemical method for determining lead in drinking water and adding vitamins to drinking water while simultaneously removing toxic contaminants. As of this month, we have a physical prototype of the filter containment device.

Tell us more about your iSearch Essay and what iSearch is all about.
At my school, the iSearch is the major paper every senior must complete. It is an extensive research paper that is a maximum of 8,000 words (double spaced). Each student may choose their paper’s subject matter. I decided to write about the history and influence of Drag culture. Including the title page, appendix, and bibliographies, my paper ended up being 45 pages.

What inspired you to start studying Chinese and ASL?
The culture and artistry of Chinese characters fascinate me. I started learning Chinese in middle school. I want to go into business which is why I'm determined to become fluent. I discovered my passion for American Sign Language (ASL) through one of my close friends. He showed me the beauty of the language. I love the movements and the imagery of Sign. I plan on minoring in both Chinese and ASL in college. I will use them to communicate and connect with many more people.

Share with us your soccer career, goals, and a proud moment.
I have been playing soccer since I was three years old. For most of my career, I have played up an age group. I currently play for two soccer club teams. I am very proud to say I am committed to playing soccer in college. My goal is to become a consistent starter on my college team as a freshman. Further in the future, I want to receive high marks in college and the opportunity to play pro or semi-pro.

What has been your favorite community service and why?
My favorite volunteering experience is with the Indian Cultural Association of Howard County, MD. I have helped them with cultural festivals and food pantries, and I’m proud to say we have given away over 1 million pounds of food to those in need. It has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done and will continue to do.

What do you love most about visual arts and fashion?
I love the freedom of visual arts and fashion. I use both to let my creativity flourish while expressing myself. There is no “right” way to do them. Art is your own and what you make of it. Painting, drawing, photography, you name it, I enjoy doing it. To me, art is the universal language anyone can speak.

Picture
Artwork by Yoshiko Slater

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

I love cooking and baking.
I enjoy inquiring and taking the time to learn about who someone is and what they can offer. I believe there is value in the unique perspectives individuals can bring to any situation. My team mindset allows me to see a group of people and think: “What can I do to help you so we can reach our goals?” I want to create a considerable long-lasting impact in the world through the connections I build. To me, collaboration is key, not only to success but also to individual growth.

I plan to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and apply for their Nursing program after completing my basics. What is a favorite healthy dish you love creating for your family?

My favorite healthy dish to make is called Parmesan Spinach Mushroom Pasta. We have been trying to cut back on gluten, so I substitute zucchini noodles for the farfalle pasta noodles. It is absolutely delicious!

What does being a part of the leadership in your youth church group mean and what does it entail from you? What do you like best about this role?
Being a part of the leadership in my church's young women’s youth group entails helping plan and carry out weekly activities, coming up with service activities to help the community or other church members, and getting to know and keeping in contact with all the girls in my group to make them feel loved. I love the opportunity of being involved and making sure everyone is included. Being close with the girls, I learn their interests- which we can incorporate in our weekly activities.

Faith Morlan

Picture

Faith Morlan – Ohio
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Faith Morlan is one of the most incredible people that I've had the pleasure of knowing. Whether she's painting, playing the clarinet, studying medical terminology, or performing in her high school flag line, show throws herself into everything she does with an infectious passion that you can't help but feel. I have been blessed to be able to see her blossom and grow as an artist, scholar, and human being. We could all use a little more Faith. The world is a better place just by having her in it.
Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

What are you most passionate about and why?
I am most passionate about flagline/colorgaurd. I have done it since I was in 8th grade and I have had such a strong love for it ever since. Getting out on the field in front of a roaring crowd and my family and peers makes me feel alive and so happy. When I perform, I give it my all. Practicing was never a chore to me, it was a way to break free and do something I feel so confident and passionate about.

Tell us about your artistic side.
I mostly like to draw or paint. When it comes to my drawings, there is really no limit to what I can do. I like to challenge myself and test my limits. If I were to sit here and pick one favorite, I would be here all day. Some of my artwork has ended up at craft/art shows, and I feel very proud of myself for accomplishing that.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

How long have you been playing the clarinet and why do you love it?
I have been playing for about 8 years now. I love it because it was the first instrument I picked up and learned to play. I love the intricacy of it and the music I am able to produce.

You mentioned you have a will to do more in your acceptance answers. Tell us about that.
I am always pushing myself to do more and with that I am able to get more experience in everyday life things. I like to see how far I can go.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

Why did you choose the medical field and what is a hot topic for you right now?
The medical field is something that has always interested me, and after taking a few medical-like classes, I just fell so deeply in love with it. I like knowing and understanding more about the human body and most of all I want to be able to give back to the world and help as much as I am able to.

Picture

Who do you find inspiring?
To me, I find Billie Eilish inspiring. Her music speaks to me and I feel great whenever I listen to it. However, it isn't just that. She doesn't care what the world thinks of her, she carries herself with such confidence, and when in an interview, she does speak to please the audience, she speaks from what she thinks and knows. I find her inspiring and she has become an idol to me.

Emily Olson

Picture

Emily Olson - Maryland
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Layla Olson
Photography by Jennifer Didio
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Emily Olson is an amazing child. She had a brother that is special needs and has defended him in many situations throughout their lives. She wants to be a child psychologist/ therapist to assist children like her brother. She is a motivated student and competes with a local dance team. She is super kind to everyone (a lot of younger children) look up to her. She continues to impress us every day.
Picture
Photography by Jennifer Didio

What inspired you to want to work in children’s therapy?
My brother has disabilities so I have seen how cruel and closed off adults can be to a child like my brother. This led me to develop the understanding that maybe it is not just my brother adults don’t understand. A lot of adults don’t try to understand what is truly going on with their children, they may seem happy, but all children need someone to talk to an open up to. I figured I could be that person and help these children with their problems that some adults do not have time to focus on.

Tell us about what you are doing now to help you prepare for that occupation in the future.
I decided to take a psychology class with Carroll Community college to help me better prepare to deal with people and their minds. Psychology explains a lot of why people act the way they do, and I felt as though I can relate those topics to children. I used to work with children at summer camps, and dance classes, but due to covid I had to stop. Those experiences also helped me to observe behavior of children and try to figure out why they act the way they do.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Didio

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

I would talk about how unrealistic beauty standards are in today’s society, because a lot of people tend to believe whether they are men or women that if they do not look a certain way, they are not beautiful, but I completely disagree with that and I want my peers to know this too.

What is the main thing others should know about unrealistic beauty standards?
Unrealistic beauty standards lead people to want something that is impossible to achieve, it is okay to want better for yourself, but you should do so in a healthy way. You should take care of your body, do not push yourself, drink water, and change your diet if you want to but make sure to not restrict yourself. If you do not want to change your diet or exercise that’s okay too, live your life in the body you were given because all bodies are beautiful.

Please share with us your dance journey. Where did you start and where are you now? What do you love best about it?

I started dance when I was three years old at NCRC a non-competitive dance company, I performed at many recitals. When I got to the age of 8 or 9 I saw a single production put on by the competitive dancers and I knew that’s what I wanted to do too. The next year I joined the competitive dance team D&Js. I started out in the lower groups made great friends; I found a family within that studio. I tried every different genre of dance, but I decided my favorites were tap and hip hop. Each year I worked hard to get to higher and higher companies, and now I am in the highest hip hop, and tap group. I worked hard to get into the dances I am in now and have come a long way from where I was when I started 7 years ago. I love that family I developed in the studio, and how every time I go in the stress leaves my body, for the few hours I am there I can just let go.

What is your favorite dance memory?
My favorite dance memory is each time we would go on stage for our award sessions. Each person in our company would gather together excited to hear the results and placements of each group. Everyone would cheer and congratulate each other. Our whole team for most of the sessions were together we would dance on stage joke around and cheer each other up if we did not do as good as we had thought.

How has covid changed dance for you and your classes?
Covid caused us to be out of the studio for months and be not able to compete at any competitions. I had to adjust to dancing in a closet instead of a big open studio for a while (I am not joking it was an actual closet). Now that we are back at the studio, we are there for less time, and there are not as many classes. Many people who once all danced together are now separated into smaller groups.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Getting to the higher group in hip hop was one of the hardest things I have ever accomplished. In fact, for a few years when I tried out, I did not make it. I do not give up however, so I continued working and practicing, and giving all the energy I had. I put so much work into getting to where I am in hip hop, if I had given up, I would have never gotten there.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Didio

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?

As cliché as it sounds never give up. The things you want to achieve may seem impossible at first, but you can get there if you continue to work for it. Push yourself work as hard as you can and if you make a mistake, put it in the past and move on there is no point in focusing on mistakes you made. When people make a mistake, they tend to think it the end of the world, but it is not just keep working for what you want and you will get there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope I am on the path of my career and have a job that either involves children’s therapy or will lead to it. I see myself in a happy relationship not only with a significant other, but with friends and family. I will have a good support system and figure out decisions involving where I will end up living as I go.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I enjoy drawing and even painting sometimes, I consider myself to be a creative person, so anything creative I can do.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Most pictures I see I can draw from just looking at them, usually cartoon types of pictures.

3 Things on your bucket list
Travel to New York and see a Broadway show, go skydiving, see the grand canyon

Who do you find inspiring?
My oldest brother, I have seen every hard thing he has gone through in his life and I know he does not think I notice, but he was able to work hard to get where he is now, and he still is working to accomplish more. One day I want to be as smart and hardworking as my brother is.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my kindness inspires others to be more kind to each other. I know what it is like to have people be unkind to you, and I know I am not the kindest person in the world, but I truly hope I do inspire others to be nicer to one another.

How do you keep your schedule straight when you are so busy?
I usually have to write down things to remember them. I also choose a day to do each task and try to give myself some break days. For example, I may decide on a night I do not have much dance to do more of my assignments than I normally could. I also find days I can hang with friends or my boyfriend and try to make sure they do not clash by letting people know the days I am actually available.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I do not think there is anything else I would like to share, just excited to be participating.

Maya Gonzales – Michigan
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Sweet Life Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Maya Gonzales had a vision for her life from an early age. She always knew her path in life would be an artist and musician. Maya has dedicating her life to her violin, piano, guitar, and artwork. She has been fortunate to travel the world playing her music and extremely fortunate to attend Interlochen Arts Academy. Her good fortune comes by having a passion, drive, and dedication to be the best artist she can possibly be. Her artistry is bigger than herself. She continually looks at how her artistry can affect change in her community and the lives of others.

Please share your music career with us. When did you start, which instrument is your favorite, and where and what you are practicing now?
I officially started my music career when I was about 6 years old, taking piano lessons. But even before then, I remember singing folk songs with my grandpa while he played guitar. While I have always been a classically trained musician, I owe my grandpa a great due of thanks for being one of the people that kept me motivated. After about 5 years of taking piano lessons, I started taking violin lessons as well. I played in my high school orchestra, my local symphony orchestra, and played in a string quartet at weddings. I also attended multiple camps from the ages of 12 to 16. My junior year I auditioned for Interlochen Art Academy, was accepted, and played violin in the academy symphony. In the midst of playing violin and piano, I learned ukelele, bass guitar and acoustic/electric guitar. Im now still studying at Interlochen Arts Academy, focusing on fashion, but trying to improve my guitar playing.

What is one of your favorite memories music has brought you?
Either travelling to Europe to tour with a youth symphony, or travelling to Miami with the Interlochen orchestra. In Europe I performed at beautiful churches and venues across France, Germany, and Luxembourg. In Miami we performed at The New Word Center for a sold out crowd of 700 people.

What type of artwork do you do?
I do all types of artwork, but some of my favorite mediums are charcoal, pencil, and oil/acrylic paint. I like to make conceptual artwork that is meaningful to me and to the people who see it. Conceptual art is nice because it depends on the viewer to determine the meaning behind it, and it can be different for everyone.

What types of fashion do you design and where do you get your inspiration?
Right now, I design mainly dresses and some shirts, but I am hoping to work my way up to other garments like jackets and suits. I get my inspiration from all over. It can be something as simple as seeing an outfit I like on Instagram and using that for inspiration. But it can also be a very deep and involving process where I find a theme to work with and base a garment off that. I also love looking in fashion magazines and seeing all of the new trends, I think my favorite magazine is ‘W’.

If you have a favorite, we'd love to see a picture of something you've designed and the details to go along with it.

The picture I submitted (above) is a dress that I just designed and built this semester. I got one of my friends to model the dress for me and I also shot the pictures.

Bailey Jennings

Bailey Jennings – Georgia
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Monica Jennings
Photography by Carolyn Griffin
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Bailey is an overcomer! She has had many academic challenges due to some learning disabilities that were diagnosed in 9th grade, when all the credit-bearing classes begin to accumulate for graduation GPA. We moved her to a smaller private school during the summer after her 10th grade year. That in itself is hard for a teenager, new friends, new school, and a new city.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would want to be interviewed on my passion for Flyboarding and how as a girl it’s a very uncommon sport, especially in South Georgia. I got started last summer and I enjoy doing it with my dad at our houseboat at Lake Blackshear.
Picture

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover my love for art. I recently took on a huge project which was painting my schools bathroom to help bring a smile to girls who might be feeling overwhelmed or lonely due to Covid-19 outbreak. I put fun paintings and brightened it up so everyone could at least have something to make their day better. Animals really inspire me, when I paint especially a lion or tiger would have to be my favorite thing to paint.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (
What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)
Social Media. Myself included I spend way to much time on my phone to the point where I don’t even acknowledge my friends who are in the same room with me. We all just sit on our phones and because of COVid-19 it has only gotten worse, because you can’t go out and do fun things anymore. Phones are ruining everyone’s perception of each other and we have this picture of what someone should look or act like because of society today. I think one solution to getting teenagers off phones is community service or small groups to help our world, because we will all look up from our phones one day and see just how much the world needs our generation to stand up and make a difference.

Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Kristen never seems to give up. Her tenacity is inspiring. While going after what she wants, she is fearless and almost always has a smile on her face. Kristen volunteers on a consistent basis. It would be hard to find a more selfless person willing to give up their personal time, talent, and resources to help and support others.

What is it like going to an arts school? What are some main differences between an arts school and a regular high school?
Going to an arts school is such an amazing experience and head start for my future that I’m grateful for. While attending Booker T. my craft has grown in so many ways. Along the journey I’ve been able to discover what kind of artist/person I’ve grown into. Some differences between an arts school and regular high school is that you do have to audition to get into Booker T. We also have lots of freedom/opportunities that a regular high school wouldn’t necessarily have. As hard as it can be, juggling academics and art classes I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Tell me about your love for fashion! How did you figure out that you love it so much?
I’ve always loved the idea of dressing up when I was younger and as I’ve gotten older it’s gotten bigger. I would say my love really expanded for it this past year when I designed a fashion line named “FETCH”, which was a mix of different monochromatic styles based on the color pink that I created with my friend Leo for an event at my school called “Strut”. Strut, is a fashion show that we present every year ran and created by students. During the process and after is when I realized it was really something I would want to pursue after high school.

What are some goals that you have for your future? Would you like to pursue a career in the arts and fashion?
After high school, I plan on pursuing the arts in college and as far as majoring I’m still deciding on what that looks like for me. I would say that some of my goals for my future would be traveling, being successful and as crazy as that sounds it is something I think about frequently and wish the best for upon myself. Lastly, to be in a great state of mind while doing life.

Why do you love to volunteer? What are your favorite volunteer projects you have been a part of?
Volunteering is something I’ve been doing for a while, when volunteering not only does it make me happy giving back or putting a smile on someone's face but I also think it’s a good reality check. One of my favorite missionary projects has been running a kids VBS in San Francisco at a local church in a low-income neighborhood with other teens a part of a local church in Dallas. I enjoy working with kids and the joy that was brought to those kids is something I will always remember.

What does it mean to you knowing that you are someone your friends and peers can always come to if they need advice or help?
Anytime a friend comes to me for advice or help, I would say that It makes me feel trustful knowing that they’re coming to me for my input about something that is very important to them. I cherish my friends greatly and like helping them as best as possible.

Issue 36 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Chloe is a free spirit always aspiring to do her best in whatever she is doing. She owns her unique style without following the latest trends. Chloe is artistic, smart and has a beautiful heart. She will go far wherever life may take her.

What do you love most about art and how has it impacted who you are and what you like to do?
I grew up around art, mainly from my mother. I was self-taught. Art was a continuous “outlet” for me, even when I was younger. It helps me to express myself, grow, and keep a peaceful mindset. There’s nothing more I enjoy than starting a new project and being able to present it to an audience. I take part in various contests locally. If I were to describe my “art style,” I would say its anonymous! You will never know what I come up with, but I make sure there is always meanings to my pieces.

What is one of your favorite pieces of artwork you have done? We would love for you to supply a picture of it!
One of my most successful pieces is a stippled drawing of actor, Johnny Depp, inspired from his role in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” I choose this piece because it displays one of my most concentrated concepts—emotion! It won “Best Crowd Pleaser,” displayed under the name, “Sparrow” in 2019.

Tell me a little bit about the unique style of clothes you enjoy wearing and what you would describe your fashion sense to be like.
Shopping is definitely a big hobby of mine, as well as a favorite activity I like to do with my friends! My fashion sense is inspired by latest/vintage trends-stretching from 1980s retro all the way to 2002 bell bottoms and crop tops! I can wear sweatpants but make it fancy if the occasion calls for it. Miss matches, funky colors, or over sized pieces... it all comes together when you work the confidence!! fashion is one of the many ways I can tell you WHO I am.

What are your plans for the future, and what do you hope to accomplish in life?
My plan is to go into the medical field when I hit college. I want to attend West Virginia University in Morgantown. I’d like to be a Dentist, advertising a great attitude and an even bigger smile! I hope to be a part of something great when I older.

Picture
Photography by Greyscale Photography LLC
How would you describe yourself and who you are as a person?
I’m extremely spunky and warm-hearted. I’m a girl who really enjoys making her friends laugh and spending moments with anyone wholesomely. I’m independent. You can depend on me and I’ll always give more than my 100%. Effort is a big key for me. I’ll always try something different than before—it’s good that I like surprises.

As an inspiration to others, how can your bubbly personality and positive outlook on life inspire other teens to make friends with new people and branch out like you have?
My message is simple. Be open minded. If you can do that, there will always be a door of possibilities, so take them! If there’s anything I’ve learned about myself, it’s to be more relaxed. We have our whole lives ahead of us, be excited and hopeful. Instead of stressing the future, think about what you can do and how you’ll achieve yourself. Keep your TRUE friends close.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I’m not afraid to be a little awkward, and I’m not afraid to be myself. I laugh loud, and smile BIG, but I think that’s what people enjoy the most.

Jenna Lowery - Missouri
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Stephanie Lowery
Issue 33 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Driven, passionate, determined, leadership, optimistic, patient, loving, understanding, compassion, strength....just a few of the characteristics this beautiful young lady has carried throughout her entire life. She has been a role model to her two younger siblings, as she navigates this challenging time of uncertainty & the emotions of "missing out" on all the "experiences" that her siblings will one day get to have. I have watched her handle the ups and down with dignity & a new found sense of maturity inspiring me to be the best version of myself I can be, not only for myself but for her, her two sisters and my husband.
Picture
Photography by Stephanie Lowery

How are you making the best of the situation you are in right now, especially being a senior?

To make the best of the situation that we are all in I try to keep myself busy so I am not just sitting and dwelling on all of this. I focus on the positives in my life, like my family, friends, and all the good memories I have had the past four years of High school. I have used this time to spend more time with my two younger sisters, and I will say it has really brought us all closer to one another.

What are some activities you have been doing to pass the time through this pandemic?
I have spent most of my time doing artwork and drawing. I love to draw; it is a really good way to pass the time for me. Additionally, it is something that helps me gather my thoughts and relax. The biggest project I have tackled would have to be my closet wall. I drew henna designs all over it and then went back and painted it. I have also drawn things for others like my friends and family.
Picture
"This is the Henna wall in my closet, photo taken by Steph aka mom" - Jenna

What are you most looking forward to doing after this pandemic is over?

After this pandemic is all over I am really looking forward to seeing the rest of my family. We are all super close and I am very thankful to have such a supportive family. I am also looking forward to seeing all of my friends again. Especially from my dental assisting school sense we had a last day of school together without even knowing it.

Who or what is inspiring you to get through this tough time?
I would have to say my family and my tech teacher are the main ones who are inspiring me to get through this pandemic. Without the love and support from my family I have no idea where I would be right now. The support from some of my best friends is also very helpful knowing that they all want me to succeed. My tech teacher has pushed me to do my best and continues to help me prepare for my Mo Basics test that I will take after this pandemic is over. Her support has really strengthened my confidence, I would be very stressed during this time trying to keep everything organized without her help.

What are you going to study in college? Why did you choose this?

I plan on attending St. Louis Community College in the fall. I will continue my education in dentistry and major in dental hygiene. My plan is to work as an assistant while attending college and then become a hygienist. I am planning and hoping to work as a hygienist right after college. Ever since I was younger, I would always want to see what the ortho or the dentist was doing in my mouth. I also love helping and working with people and children. My original plan was to become a dentist, but throughout my two years attending South Technical High School for assisting and shadowing/interning with dental offices, I have come to realize that hygiene is my passion rather than becoming an actual dentist.

What is one goal that you have for your future?
A goal that I have for the future is to take the Mo Basics test and become a certified dental assistant, so that I can start working in an office and get experience.

Jacqueline Hennecke - Florida
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Christa Joyner Moody Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jacqueline Hennecke is one of two girls playing boys varsity hockey at her school, is an accomplished artist, an NHS member and co-founder of the school club GOALS (Girls Outdoors Adventure and Leadership) currently the largest club on campus with over 150 members in a high school of 635. Under the GOALS umbrella she also formed Girls Outside. Girls Outside strives to mentor underserved middle school girls by giving them "a safe and inspiring environment that encourages leadership and communication while learning outdoor skills". Girls Outside was approved as a 501(c)(3)! Just a few highlights from this amazing HS senior.
Picture
Christa Joyner Moody Photography

What is the main focus of the GOALS program?
The school club GOALS (Girls Outdoors Adventure and Leadership) is a broad group supporting numerous girl-focused causes, including Berkeley Academy and Girl UP. Within the club, we promote civil discourse on issues affecting intersectional feminism and gender equality.

What inspired you to cofound Girls Outside?
In tenth grade, my team and I wanted to start a club for my school that would support underprivileged middle school girls in the Tampa Bay area. Sixth grade is a pivotal year, when the “anything is possible” dreams of youth collide with an emerging adult reality, and that this effect is heightened in communities where schools and families are underserved. From my camp in Canada, which serves many underprivileged girls, I had seen the confidence girls gain from learning outdoor skills. When combined strong mentorship from older girls, the effect can be life changing. Girls Outside aims to provide middle school girls with skills and tools necessary to become advocates for their community.

Picture
Christa Joyner Moody Photography

What are your plans for the future of Girls Outside?

The future of our organization is very bright – Hopefully, we will grow chapters that run across a larger region in Florida. By instituting training programs for high school girls to run Girls Outside in their local middle schools, we hope to bring the opportunity to more challenged communities. Additionally, we’ll institute initiatives to involve past participants beyond middle school, who will come back as “Junior Leaders” with special training.

How did you get into art and what is your favorite art piece you have designed?
I’ve been taking art classes in my extracurriculars since I was eight years old. Until a year ago, I had been working with acrylic paint and digital media. For an extra challenge, I took a class this year in 3D design. My concentration has been in using natural materials to spark a discussion in dependency on nature. My biggest piece so far has been a throne made with a wooden base and interwoven vines and leaves, which received a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition.

Picture
Christa Joyner Moody Photography

Lastly, What inspired you to start playing ice hockey?

For 12 years I was a competitive figure skater, completely absorbed by the thrill of jumps and the feeling of metal against ice. Being a hockey fan, I was already familiar with a lot of rules and techniques of ice hockey. The coach of the school team had been encouraging me for years to try hockey. Realizing I wasn’t going for the Olympics, I figured I could afford to take a season to try it. Since there was no girls team, I joined the Varsity Boys Ice Hockey team. Though it took some adjusting, I have never regretted the decision. At the end of the season I was in a defensive pairing.

Amanda Kelly - Michigan
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Amy Clement Photography
Issue 27 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Amanda Kelly is one of the most talented young artists that I have ever met! Her interest in art & fashion started at a young age when her Grandparents bought her and her sister fabric pieces. The two of them used safety pins to turn those pieces into "clothing" and put on fashion shows at home. Love it!
Amanda always has had a love of art. From colored pencils to oil pastels to pottery... she creates beautiful works of art. Always "giving back" she has volunteered in numerous classrooms and religion classrooms with young children to teach, inspire and share her gift.
Amanda's current High School art teacher has inspired her so much in the way he teaches art. So much so that she is now going to turn her passion and gift into her job after college. A true example of how one teacher "inspiring" a student has "inspired" that student to "inspire" other children. So awesome.
Amanda maintains a 3.5 gpa and plans to attend the University of Toledo to study Art Education after she graduates next Spring. Best of luck to her!!

Why is art so special to you?
Art is very special to me because it is a way to “escape” my reality. There is no such thing as being perfect in art because everyone is different. I have been through a lot in my life and art has been one of the best ways for me to make peace. I have always felt as if I have to be perfect.

Tell us about some of your favorite art pieces you have created.
It is very hard for me to decide what piece is my favorite. My favorite art piece to create was a painting of lemons. It was my first time painting with acrylics on canvas, so I was very nervous. With all my projects comes a challenge. In the end I was very pleased with the outcome and it made me feel accomplished.

Picture
My goal was to use contrast in color to show different textures.

Why do you think art is a way for people to escape if they are feeling down?

In art you can be or do as you feel. I think of art as a movie. People endure certain emotions when they look at it. In today's life it's hard to be unique. In the world of art unique is desired and no one gets judged for it.

Would you be interested in opening your own art studio? Why or why not?
The thought of opening my studio has crossed my mind. My dream is to inspire others with the power of art. Although teaching is my number one goal. I want to be able to teach others what the impact from art can really do.

Picture
This is a sketch of part of the famous "Creation of Man". I had chosen to sketch the hands to challenge myself with shading.

Do you like using paints or markers/pencils more? Why?
My favorite media to use would be colored pencils and paints. I like to use these because I can build up the colors I need. With any project my teacher has always taught me to start from light to dark. Colored Pencil and paint allow me to do that.

What is the hardest thing that you have accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is gaining my self-confidence. Not only have I struggled with mental concerns I struggled with my appearance. Whether it came to my acne or my weight. Not having the confidence in myself made my mental stability weaker. Surrounding myself with people who give me the utmost positive vibe and listening to compliments saved me.

Picture
Who do you find inspiring?
The person that I find most inspiring would be my art teacher. Every day I am eager to get into his class. He makes everyone's day a million times better. He has inspired many people to follow their dreams and ways to accomplish them. He has been the one to inspire me to teach others.

How did you become interested in art?

I have been interested in art as long as I can remember.

It is hard to pick just a couple favorite pieces, but my favorite subjects usually involve people and nature. My favorite art mediums are pencil, acrylic paint, and copic markers.

Bob Ross, because he encourages you to create art that is unique to you, rather than directing you to do art a certain way.

Practice ALOT and find inspiration in many different places. Be true to you.

Do you plan to continue pursuing a career in art in the future?
