Tell us how you got involved with Soles4Souls. What is it and why is it so important to you?
When I was 8 years old, I decided to start collecting gently used shoes for Soles4Souls, instead of receiving birthday gifts. I was inspired by my older brother, Kelton, to accept donations instead of gifts because he started this trend in my family by collecting food for the food bank when he was 10. The idea for me to collect shoes came from researching local charities that I could be involved in, with my mom's help. I immediately fell in love with Soles4Souls and their mission. "At S4S, we turn unwanted shoes and clothing into opportunity, by keeping them from going to waste and putting them to good use – providing relief, creating jobs and empowering people to break the cycle of poverty."

How do you host your shoe drives? Where? Who gets involved? How long does it last? Those sorts of things.
I started by hosting shoe drives for my birthday every year. Then I started hosting shoe drives at my schools, for Beta Club, with my cheer teams, various churches, at pageants, 5Ks, girl scout troops, local businesses, my neighborhood, college sororities, sports teams, etc. I use social media, flyers, posters, announcements, community events, and word of mouth to get the word out about my shoe drives. It takes a lot of organization, commitment, and time to pull these drives off, but it has been so worth it.

What do you love about having such a big leadership role in your community?
What I love most about having such a big leadership role in my community is inspiring other kids and young adults to also make the choice to better the world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination was so sweet! It covers my love of being an ambassador for Soles4Souls, my love of going on mission trips, my academics, and my leadership role on my competitive cheer team. I love to host community events to help others. I love to encourage others to be their best.

Tell us about your favorite mission trip you've been on so far.
My favorite mission trip was to Haiti. It was a life changing experience for me. Going to the local schools, orphanages, and villages to size the sweet kids for their brand-new pairs of shoes and spend time playing with them was a feeling that I will never forget. The happiness on all their faces is forever with me. Also, getting to meet 2 local women who participate in the Microenterprise program moved me to tears. This was one of the best experiences of my life.

Picture
Photography by Carla Lynn Photography

What is your competitive cheer life like?
I have been a competitive cheerleader for 7 years now, both All Star Cheer and school cheer. I have loved it so much for several reasons. The first being the feeling I get when my team and I are about to step on the mat to give our best performance. The second being the relationships formed with teammates and coaches that will truly last a lifetime. I also love the aspect of setting team goals that we are working together to achieve. We practice 3-5 days a week, have games, tumble clinics, and competitions. My favorite accomplishment as a team was my freshman year when my team placed 6th in the nation at Nationals in Orlando. This was such an amazing experience, especially because we were a brand-new school, brand new team, and the very first time this team competed at Nationals. So, to place 6th out of close to 70 teams in the nation was a huge accomplishment.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present the topic of Microenterprise. I could talk for a long time about how Microenterprise can change people’s lives for the better. I am passionate about the economic wellbeing of families all over the world.

Picture
Photography by Carla Lynn Photography

Tell us more about Microenterprise. What is it and how can it change people's lives for the better?
Soles4Souls says, "Women are earth-shakers, change-makers, and wrong-righters. But all too often, their contributions are overlooked or underappreciated. And in many parts of the world, women simply don’t get a chance to fulfill their potential. Through our micro-enterprise program, we empower women in developing countries to start and sustain small businesses through the sale of shoes." For women around the world to get the opportunity to provide sustainable income for their families by selling the used shoes that were donated, provides a huge economic impact for that family and their community. In turn, shoe companies donate brand new pairs of shoes to Soles4Souls, who then distribute the new shoes to children in need. It's just a wonderful program.

What was your photoshoot like with Carla Lynn Photography and what did you love most about it?
My photo shoot with Carla Lynn was a dream! Carla Lynn is one of the most genuine people I've ever met. She is all about instilling confidence in the teens that she works with. I especially loved that she set up a time to meet with me and get to know me before the actual day of the photo shoot. That made the shoot so much more fun.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
One of the best experiences in my life was getting flown out to New York City with my family to be on Good Morning America when they heard about my brother and I collecting shoes for Soles4Souls. At the time we were at 44,000 pairs collected and were trying to reach 50,000. When we were on the show DSW surprised us with not only donating 6,000 more pairs to help us reach our goal, but they also donated another 50,000 pairs of brand-new shoes! We were shocked and so excited!

What do you love best about being a part of the NHS?
What I love best about being part of the National Honor Society is that I get to represent my school and community in a positive way. I get to help in the community and make an impact on my peers!

What does it mean to be a member of Spiritual Life?
Being a member of Spiritual Life means that you are a devoted person who gives their free time to Lake Catholic. Spiritual Life helps with field trips, mass, planning pep rallies, and even doing mission trips.

What do your duties as Student Ambassador entail?
As a Student Ambassador I help out around the school, go to open houses, talk to incoming freshman families, and get to show new students around the school!

Why did you choose Sharon Holy Photography for your senior portraits and what did you love best about your photo shoot experience?
I chose Sharon Holy Photography because you hear nothing but good things about this company. The photos always turn out amazing. What I love best about my photo shoot experience with Sharon is that she makes you feel so comfortable. I never fail to have a smile on my face when I am with her because she makes the experience a lot of fun.

What inspired you to get this blood drive up and running?
What inspired me to start my own blood drive was helping with one at my school. Seeing that you can save three people’s lives really inspired me. I wanted to make a difference in the world, and this is a step in the right direction. Overall, the blood drive was a success, and I will definitely be running one again soon!

What was the most difficult part of it and how did you overcome it?
One of the most difficult parts of the blood drive was finding donors. It is very hard these days to find people to donate blood. I overcame this by making flyers and posting them! I also posted the flyers on my social media which helped!

What are you doing now to help you on your path to becoming a veterinarian?
To become a veterinarian, you truly need to have a love for animals which I do. I love going up to the shelters to see the animals and even have three dogs of my own! Not to mention, a bunny and a hamster. I have always had a love for animals and know that being a veterinarian would be very beneficial in my future.

Bella Griffin

Bella Griffin - Kansas
Nomination and Photography by Time Flies KS
Issue 48 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Bella Griffin spent many years in foster care. She was adopted at age 12 and has overcome so many hardships. She is an excellent student and a wonderful role model for younger kids including her 5 younger siblings. Everyone that meets Bella falls in love with her positive attitude and generous heart.
Picture
Photography by Time Flies KS

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
Being in foster care was challenging. Nobody understood me or took the time to help me work through my thoughts and feelings. I had a lot of anxiety and struggled to feel good about myself. My parents have helped me learn my worth and encouraged me to try new things. I’m very grateful.

What do you wish everyone knew about being in foster care and/or the foster care system that most people don't unless they are/were in it?
You lose absolutely everything you knew.  I moved to 7 homes that I can remember.  Sometimes I would move with a day or two notices.  People that don’t understand what it’s like to be a child in foster care will say that we are crazy or bad kids.  Kids in foster care have no voice.   I acted out to have some control. My parents made it safe for me to work through all those feelings and helped me understand that it was ok to be angry and it was ok to heal.

What advice would you give to kids going through what you already went through?
Surround yourself with people that have similar goals. Don’t listen to that inner voice that tells you that you don’t deserve safety and unconditional love.  You do.

What advice would you give to parents looking to take in foster care children/teens for the first time?
Expect kids to reject you at first.  Don’t expect them to know how to act.   They don’t know how to accept the boundaries and love of a family.  They have most likely been figuring it out on their own for a long time.

Picture
Photography by Time Flies KS

You are now the big sister of 5 younger siblings. What are some of your favorite things to do with them, and what is it like having so many small people look up to you?
I love to play board games, especially clue.  My siblings and I play video games sometimes too.  My youngest sister likes to play barbies and fix my hair.  I feel a great responsibility to set a good example for them.  Most of the time it’s great to have a big family.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think being a normal kid is inspiring. People spend a lot of time doing things they think will look good on a resume. I have done mission trips, and helped at-risk kids, but I would never want kids that don’t have the same opportunities that I do to feel like they aren’t good people. Sometimes doing normal everyday tasks and making it to the next day is inspiring.

Tell us more about the mission trips you've been on. Where did you go, what did you do there, and what did you learn from your experiences?
I went to Texas with my church. We spent time in a small community that needed extra support.  I learned that I had value even though I was so broken.  My mom always told me I did but the children there looked up to me and it was amazing to play with them and read to them.

What is a favorite memory from a mission trip?
Reading to the little kids was my favorite thing. I am dyslexic so I used to really avoid reading out loud.  I decided to try anyway, and the kids there loved it
even when I got a word turned around. They just loved the attention they were getting. It made me realize that people don’t expect me to be perfect, they just want me to show up and try.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Anxiety and mental health awareness. Kids often feel like something is “wrong” with them if they don’t feel the same way or do things the same way others do. Having challenges doesn’t make them bad or less than those who don’t.

Tell us about your photo shoot experience with Time Flies KS! What do you love most about photo shoots with your mom?

My friends and I love to do photoshoots with my mom.  It’s something we started doing for fun and she created a business out of it.   I am so proud of her work.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Loving who I am.  My therapist and my parents worked really hard to help me understand my value.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Try not to focus on all the things you can’t change.  Take one step at a time and figure out the positive things you can hold onto.   Keep looking for people and opportunities that will help you get where you want to be.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I want to be an esthetician.  Hopefully I will be done with school or close to it by then.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Watching scary movies with my boyfriend.  He makes it so much fun.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can bend my arms backward because I have double jointed elbows

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to go on a road trip in an RV
skydiving
Visit the Maldives

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom is the most selfless, loving person I know.  She inspires me to make the most of life every day.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Look past what you immediately see or hear about people and get to know who they really are.  People can often surprise you.

Nomination: Reese Richie is a beautiful young woman with a big heart! She has worked hard to keep a 4.0 GPA and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta. She loves to volunteer every summer as a teen leader at Vacation Bible School at her church. She also loves animals and is a member of the SPAA through her high school, and she volunteers at the animal shelter. Reese is interested in pursuing a nursing degree next year at college.

I would like to be interviewed about my volunteer hours and service projects.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My nomination does not cover the reasons I chose nursing for my future job.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why? (What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?)

Peyton Young

Peyton Young - Mississippi
Nomination and Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Peyton Young has been involved in many activities in school, church, and community. Peyton was an exceptional student at Madison-Ridgeland Academy where she served as captain of the basketball and soccer teams. She also gives her time serving in various camps for younger children at her school. Peyton graduated high school from Madison-Ridgeland Academy. She has also been very involved in Broadmoor Baptist church where she served on the youth leadership team.
Peyton will further her education at the University of South Alabama where she was accepted into the early acceptance program for Physical Therapy School.

Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography

Tell us more about your sports careers in basketball and soccer. What did it mean to you to be a captain of both? What legacies do you hope to leave behind?
Being a captain of the soccer and basketball teams meant a lot to me because it showed that my teammates looked up to me. As a captain, I was able to lead in a way that honored Christ on and off the field. Including others is a big part of my legacy because I know what it feels like to be excluded, and I want those around me to feel accepted.

Picture
Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography

What activities do you do with those with special needs and how did you get started?

I volunteer with many events for those with special needs, but the main one is working with them on Sunday mornings. We host a Sunday school class, so their guardians can go to their classes and attend the sermon. It also allows those with special needs to encounter Christ just like everyone else. I first started working with those with special needs in middle school at an event called TopSoccer. It gave those with special needs the opportunity to play soccer and stay active.

How often do you meet with them and what have you learned from these experiences?
Events are held throughout the year, but I volunteer with the ministry at Broadmoor Baptist Church once a month or fill in when extra help is needed. The main thing I’ve learned from these experiences is that I have more than enough and should be content with what I have. Those with special needs are always joyful and have a smile on their face which truly humbles me because they don’t allow their circumstances to determine their attitudes.

Tell us more about FCA (What does it stand for?) and what leadership roles did you have?

FCA stands for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It’s an organization that hosts Christian gatherings for athletes in high school and college. Because I was on the leadership team, I helped plan the meetings we had, and I even had the opportunity to speak at our meetings. FCA meets every Friday morning @7:15, and a different student or coach speaks. As part of the leadership team, people were always looking up to me, so it was important for me to watch my actions and make sure I was leading in a way that honored Christ.

Picture
Photography by Destiny Perkins Photography

What did you learn about leadership from SLi? What was your biggest accomplishment with them?
I learned that even though I’m an ordinary teenager, I can still make a difference in the world. Leadership also isn’t about gathering people to follow me because ultimately, it’s not about me. Leadership is me pursuing Christ and others following me because of Christ working through my life. My biggest accomplishment was going on mission trips to Jackson, MS and Orlando, FL and being able to share the love of Christ with those around me.

Shannon Prendergast - Pennsylvania
Nomination by Colleen Prendergast
Photography by NRG Imaging
Issue 47 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Shannon was born to lead. When her family's haunted house nonprofit needed a volunteer director, she stepped right up and helped. Now in 2021, when Shannon found out her school wasn't having a prom, she went and booked one herself. Then hearing that many students couldn't go because of been hit financially from the pandemic, Shannon decided to raise money for the ticket cost. Out of the 107 guests, more than half are going because of donations! The This Is Our Night prom is open to seniors from last year and to any student denied a prom this year. She's just amazing and we are so proud of her.

Tell us about the prom you are hosting for your fellow students.
When my school decided not to do a prom, I decided that I didn't want to miss out on such an important high school memory. I booked a hall and started selling tickets for seniors from last year and those whose schools cancelled their proms. Then I found out that so many students couldn't afford to go. I started a fundraiser to sponsor a student's prom ticket. Now more than half of those going were donated by the community! The 'This Is Our Night Prom' is June 17 and I'm really excited. I hope everyone that goes has a magical time.

Did you ask for help? Where did you find help and what was it like taking on such a great leadership position?
I relied on my Mom A LOT and a few of my friends. I sent out press releases to local news organizations to help me get the word out. Then I reached out to local businesses to help me get things like photos and decorations paid for. We lost so much due to the pandemic. I just needed a way to make this happen for local seniors.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I've always been big into art and I love being around kids. I hope to go to college to do art therapy and teaching for children and those with disabilities.

What do you feel passionate about or could talk forever about?
Get involved with your community! Do community service! It really makes you feel better about yourself and doing something for others is really important. Not many people take the time to do things for others and it's just too important. Not only do I volunteer with my families nonprofit, but I donate my time to helping another non-profit give out gifts to the elderly.

Picture
Photography by NRG Imaging

Tell us about your family's nonprofit.

My family runs a nonprofit called Croydon Haunted Hollows. Over 50 volunteers dress up and put on a scary Halloween show every year for free for our community. We are also the first in our area to do a Sensory Friendly Haunted House for families with autistic children. I am the volunteer director for all the school age volunteers and I love it.

What other community service projects do you do?
I volunteer at a local nonprofit called The Christmas Gala and they deliver gifts and necessities to the elderly all year long. I've helped deliver gifts and even designed some Christmas Cards to be mailed to senior citizens. I also have done video editing work for another local nonprofit called the 3C of Connecting Foundation. They support local businesses and run events that help raise money for other nonprofits. They have a lot of networking events and I love going. Networking is definitely a skill that everyone should know.

3 things on your bucket list
Travel to Italy or Ireland. Graduate College. Be a motivational speaker

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom!  Her intuition and all-knowing 'mom-ness'. Her ability to rationalize and work through any situation. Her generosity and selflessness. Her empathy for others. Her silly sense of humor. I wouldn't be the person I am without her guidance. I love you Mom!

Nomination: Emily is inspiring to everyone that gets to know her. Emily has such a warm and caring personality. While dealing with what has become today’s teenage adversity, Emily has recently had to overcome the grief associated with the loss of her beloved Grandmother. She keeps her head held high and has never criticized those who have hurt her. She inspires me to remember what is important in life and focus on the good.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
Academics, being a part of the JGS model team, and community service.

Tell us more about your academics.
Academics have been a big part of my life since I was little. I have always strived to be the best I can be and get the highest grades possible. My favorite subject is by far English. Writing lets me free my mind and write whatever I’m thinking or feeling. I will be a senior next year but will also be attending Youngstown State University to take college level classes. Without all the hard work and dedication over the years, I would never be where I am right now. Working hard in school will help me accomplish my goals in life.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

What is the JGS Model Team?
The JGS Model Team is a business created by Jennifer Petrey. She wanted to collect a group of kids every year to display her ideas and thought about different locations and themes for her photo shoots. I followed her on Instagram for a while then got an interview to become one of her senior models. I was blessed to be accepted which means I get to go on different trips, photoshoots or even help her with another client’s photoshoot!

What do you love most about it?
I love being a part of the JGS Model Team because I got to meet a lot of wonderful people. Not only did I get to know Jenny and her family but all the other girls on the team who became sister figures to me. I love that there is never a dull moment with anyone on the team and all the constant laughs and memories that I’ve made with them.

What is a favorite memory from the JGS model team?
My favorite memory is when I had my first ever photoshoot with Jenny. I was so scared and nervous, but Jenny made me feel confident and pretty. She went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with her work and was comfortable with all the poses and props being used.

Share with us your community service endeavors.
Over the years l have always made it a point to participate in community service opportunities. However, my favorite will always be working the Christmas light show in my town. Every year I help run the ticket booth, give out food and hot chocolate and help the little kids when they meet Santa. Seeing the smile on everyone’s face during those times makes volunteering my favorite thing to do.

What leadership roles have you had and what have you learned from them?
I was the leader of a recycling program at my school. Every school year I would get it up and running as soon as school resumed. During my lunch and study halls I would go around and collect the recycling bins from every classroom in the school and take them to the recycling spot. Doing this made me realize that hard work truly pays off along with helping the environment.

Picture
Photography by Jennifer Grace Studios

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a strong supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness and trying to raise money for Breast Cancer research. I sadly lost my Grandma to Stage Four Metastatic Breast Cancer. I helped take care of her for eight months and got to see firsthand what it was like to watch someone you love suffer from such an awful disease. This is a topic I would strongly like to inform and educate people about.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up, no matter what the situation is push through it because you are stronger than you believe.

Who do you find inspiring?
My mother will forever be the most inspiring person in my life. She made me the person I am today.

Sydney Bell - Georgia
Nomination by Amber Bell
Photography by Angela Williams Photography
Issue 46 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sydney has been an inspiration to so many around her, especially me! In October 2019, Sydney was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Though this new diagnosis was very scary and life altering, she never asked God why. Every day Sydney gets up and lives her life to the fullest, never allowing this disease to get in her way! In 2020, Sydney became Drum Major at her school (which was a huge dream of hers) and was elected Junior representative for their homecoming court. This proved to her that no matter what is going on in your life, your dreams really can come true! God is going to use this girl in some mighty ways!! We are beyond proud!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I am in band, musical theater, and many academic clubs and associations at my school.

Tell us about being a Drum Major. When did you get into that and why is it so appealing to you?
Being a drum major is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments that I’ve achieved during high school. It has helped me grow tremendously as a leader and helped me find my voice. My grandmother was a drum major when she was in high school and growing up being a drum major never really caught my eye until I was in 7th grade. I had gone to a high school football game and watched the drum majors conduct the fight song and I thought it was the coolest thing and decided that was something that I really wanted to do once I got into high school. Now I’m going into my second year as a drum major and I’ve not only grown as a better leader and musician, but a better me.

Picture
Photography by Angela Williams Photography

What did being the Junior representative for your homecoming court entail and what did it mean to you?
This year, my junior year, of high school I really stepped out of my box and started doing things I normally wouldn’t. During the time of homecoming elections everyone was campaigning to be on the court and I decided at about 10 pm the night before that I would run as a joke. The people of my class voted and when the results came out and my name was on the list I was shocked because I was fully expecting one of the other students to be our representative. I was honored that the students of my class thought that I would be a good fit to represent our class on the court. It was an experience I will never forget.

Picture
Photography by Angela Williams Photography

What academic clubs do you belong to and which do you find yourself spending the most time in?
This year I am in Beta, National English Honor Society, and just recently got inducted into National Honor Society. I find myself spending the most time in Beta club because of all the service projects I have worked on. Some of my favorite service projects I’ve completed were working at the Christ Chapel share and care in Ringgold and also going over to one of the elementary schools around me to help with their water day.

Picture
Photography by Angela Williams Photography

What is the biggest leadership role you've had in one of the clubs and what did the job require of you?

Since I am a junior, I don’t have a leadership role in one of the clubs, but I was chosen by the officers in Beta club to be a speaker at our induction ceremony, which meant I was representing the junior class and speaking on behalf of them.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would like to be interviewed about academics and how much fun I have with Jennifer Grace Studios

What do you want us to know about academics and what they mean to you?
My academics have always been a huge factor in my life. I always strive to get good grades, maintaining a 4.0 gpa, and taking advanced courses to better myself intellectually.

How did you get involved with Jennifer Grace Studios and what do you love most about it?
I got involved through instagram and I loved her work. Now that I work closely with Jennifer Grace Studios, I absolutely love it. The atmosphere is unmatchable, and Jenny makes me feel great in front of the camera.

You are involved in a lot of different clubs. Which ones are they? Which one do you spend the most amount of time in and why?
I am involved in Key Club, National Honors Society, German Club, Delta Epsilon Phi, Hero Club, and Art club. I spend the most amount of time in German Club because I have been in this club the longest and the environment is so positive and outgoing.

Which club have you had the biggest leadership role in, what was the role, and what did the job entail?
I have had the biggest leadership role in Art Club. I am currently the vice president which entails assisting the president for just about everything. We organize projects from decorating the school to simple acts of kindness.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I love art and volunteering at a local nursing home, along with working and maintaining a 4.0 gpa.

What type of art do you like to do?
I create visual art with any medium I am give. I am currently taking AP Studio Art concentrating on designing with charcoal. This mostly means that I render intricate details with the help of a charcoal pencil to deepen values and add more contrast than graphite can offer.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Probably the hardest thing I have ever accomplished would be one of my art awards. Most likely it would be my state’s governors award which I won with a charcoal drawing of a skeletal pharaoh in a pseudo-archeological Ancient Egypt.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would say do not give up and work smart. Sometimes life can be rough. Things will get better but working smart and not giving up easily speeds up that process. Also, always be kind. It is hard to tell who your boss in the future will be or who will be able to help you out. You wouldn’t want to lose that by not being kind.

Where do you see yourself in five years/what are your plans?
My plans are to either attend college and go on a pre-med track, or go to college and major in aviation. I am not sure yet.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

Yes, I am really good at word games, which isn’t typically a “hidden talent.” I love a good win in scrabble.

Three things on your bucket list
Visit Greece
Visit Pretty Place Chapel
Learn how to fly.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my mother inspiring because she always had my back no matter what. She always strives to do and learn more every day while raising her children and providing and amazing life for us.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I am always willing to help and teach people. In my life, I have been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease and I know what it feels like to get discouraged and need help. For someone else, I want to be that help.

Climate change is a very important concept that needs to be known. Climate change is killing species after species and if nothing is done the human race is next. Climate change has significantly gotten much worse in the past few years from pollution to trash in our oceans. Somethings you can do today is buying sustainable products and clothes. Also, to be sure to look for the eco-safe logo and check to be sure the product isn’t harming any animals. This issue is extremely important and must be considered.

Tell us more about your involvement with the girl scouts. What is your proudest moment as a member?
I have been a member in Girl Scouts for 10 years. I have received my bronze, silver, and now am working on my gold award. My proudest moment in Girl Scouts is leading all the younger girls at camp!

Kaitlyn Simmons - Louisiana
Nomination and Photography by Jennifer Abney Photography
Issue 45 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kaitlyn Simmons is by far one of the most selfless, kind-hearted seniors I have ever had the pleasure to work with. She is a friend to all and goes out of her way to lift others up and is always your biggest cheerleader. Kaitlyn is equally beautiful and smart. She has been an active member of the cheer team, dance team, Beta Club, Key Club and National Honor Society. She was the President of the Juniors in Service Organization her senior year. Kaitlyn loves to serve her community. She loves babysitting and working at her job at the donut shop. Kaitlyn plans to continue her love of community by studying nursing at Southeastern University with the hopes of becoming a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse. If you've had the pleasure of meeting her you will be forever changed. She is one to remember! I wish you all the best in your future Kaitlyn. It has been an honor to work with you.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Be true to and love yourself. Believe you are worthy of all of the great successes’ life has to offer if you set your goals high, work hard, serve others and don't let the ways of the world get in your way of fulfilling your dreams. Be the light in someone's day. Be a friend to all and do not pass judgement as you do not know what someone is going through. Being there for someone or doing something kind can impact their life more than one would think. Even just a compliment or a smile can go a long way and make someone's day. One of my favorite quotes is "Bring love wherever you go. Shine light wherever it's dark. Leave blessings wherever you've been. Be kind wherever you are." Mary Davis

How did the pandemic affect your progress of Honors and school in general?

The pandemic was a very unsure time for students and teachers alike. The start date of my senior year kept getting pushed back farther and farther. Once we were finally able to get back to an In-Person style learning environment, it was a big shift. Yet this was hard, I kept a positive attitude and made the best of the situation. This mindset helped me to work hard in my AP and Dual Enrollment classes, and now I am finishing my senior year on the All “A” Honor Roll.

What does your role as president of the Juniors in Service Organization entail?
As the president of Juniors in Service, I attend service events and meetings, and help the younger members with any questions they may have. This year, we participated in painting a playground at an elementary school in my community, unloaded pumpkins at a church to make a pumpkin patch, and helped to clean up a high school after it was damaged by a hurricane earlier this year. I have been in this organization for two years now and have loved every minute that I was able to help my community.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Believe in yourself, and never give up! Follow your dreams, set goals for yourself, and do not stop climbing the ladder to achieving them until you reach your goals. The sky is the limit, so shoot for the stars. You can do anything you put your mind to!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself as a Registered Nurse at a local hospital. Being a nurse has always been my dream, so serving and caring for the people in my hometown would mean the world to me.

Kadance Fredericksen

3/17/2021

Picture

Kadance Fredericksen - Florida
Nomination by Amy R Miller
Photography by Meghan Basford Portrait Studio
Issue 44 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Kadance chose to make lemonade out the lemons life handed her. Kadance was abused, neglected and often homeless in her early years. Kadance was then removed from the home by her biological father and stepmother who later formally adopted her. Kadance now spends her time between her lemonade stand, seriously, where she has raised over $25,000 for the Ronald McDonald House and her organization, Kada's Promise. Kadance, through Kada's Promise, brings hope and comfort to kids still living in dire situations by providing teddy bears and blankets to crisis centers, trauma centers, abuse shelters and counseling centers.

Photography by Meghan Basford Photography

What do you want us to know about your story?
As a little girl I was abused and neglected by my biological mother and stepfather. We were also homeless, moving from house to house, never staying in one place for too long. During this time, my only friend was my stuffed horse that I got for my birthday one year. That horse was something for me to hug and hold whenever I needed it.

Tell us more about Kada's promise and the mission. How did your story develop it?
Kada's Promise is a nonprofit organization that I started to give kids who are going through what I once went through comfort and support by providing hope through a teddy bear and blanket. I started Kada's Promise because I believe no one should ever have to go through the things that I went through and is a way for me to say that I have overcome my past. I want to help others do the same.

Picture
Photography by Meghan Basford Photography

Did Covid-19 alter your mission and if so, how did you overcome the obstacles of the pandemic?
Covid-19 did not alter my mission. Sadly, it only provided us with more kids who need these teddy bears. Covid-19 has left so many kids stuck at home with nowhere to go. More kids are being abused and neglected. School is often a safe place for many of these kids, and because of Covid-19, they have nowhere to feel safe.

Picture
Photography by Meghan Basford Photography

What goals do you have for Kada's promise for 2021?
For 2021 my goal is to bring comfort to as many suffering children as I can. More than just in the state of Florida. I would like to extend Kada's promise across the United States.

Rylie Dewley

Rylie Dewley – Michigan
Nomination by Tiffany Dewley
Photography by Lindsay King Portraits
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Rylie Dewley is constantly thinking of others and ways that she can make a difference in her community. Her community service is extensive. She most recently created & managed an adopt a senior program for the seniors at her HS. Out of the 435 seniors who participated she got all of them adopted out by members of the community. She is doing the same thing this year and she's not a senior. She also adopted a highway and maintains that along with teaching youth about being Heart smart. She has received the Presidential volunteer award along with other service awards.

Tell us about your Start Heart Smart program.
I was born premature and at 3 days old the doctors at Hurley Hospital had to stop my heart and restart it. It was at this time that I was diagnosed with ASD/VSD (holes in the heart) and a heart murmur. Growing up I had to be cautious of what I did to make sure my heart was healthy. When I was 5yrs old I was told the holes in my heart had closed. A few years ago, I participated in a Free Hurley Hospital/Tommy’s Heart Teen Heart Check. The doctors noticed something was off with my echocardiogram and I was sent to a cardiologist. It was then that I was diagnosed with mitral insufficiency and leaky valves. Throughout my childhood I struggled with different cardiovascular issues, as do many other children. Many people do not realize that children and teens can have cardiovascular issues as well. Through Start Heart Smart I can help educate America’s youth on the topic of cardiovascular issues. With this program I attend schools and teach children, teens, and adults how to keep and have a healthy heart.

What is your Adopt a Senior Program?
I started the Adopt-a-Senior Program last year for seniors who attend Grand Blanc High School (my High School). Last year, the seniors missed out on a lot of opportunities due to COVID-19. They were not able to have their prom or even a normal graduation. Senior year is the one year of school that everyone looks forward to and they missed a lot of it. So, I decided I wanted to create a program to help honor the students and to hopefully brighten their day. I started a group on Facebook that grew quickly and now has over 1,500 members of the community in it. Parents, guardians, and others can post about their senior; what they enjoy, their favorite food, etc. Then, a member of the community will “adopt” them and send them gifts. It shows the seniors that the community is thinking of them and it helps put a smile on their faces.

What are your goals this year for both programs?
During this time, it is hard to be able to promote my programs in a “normal” setting, however, I am working on virtual events and videos for both events. I am going to continue to promote both of my programs this year in hopes that I can reach even more people than I previously had. Being the winner of Inspiring Teen Magazines would allow me to do this.

Picture
Photography by Lindsay King Portraits

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am the first Majorette in Grand Blanc in over 30 years. I do my best to try to serve my community any way I can.

That's exciting! Tell us more about that. How did you get the honor and what were your roles and responsibilities?
I have been twirling since I was about 5yrs old and as I got older, I was given the opportunity to twirl for my middle school. I was able to perform at football and basketball games for the 7th and 8th grade teams but also for the freshman and junior varsity basketball games at Grand Blanc High School. When I was in 8th grade, I met with the color guard coach and band director for the Grand Blanc High School band. I expressed to them how I was wanting to twirl for the school. They were so supportive and allowed me to be a part of their program. I can twirl during the varsity football pregame and halftime shows but also at the varsity girls and boys basketball games. Being the GBHS majorette has been an amazing experience. I help promote the band by traveling to different baton competitions and performing my High School majorette routine in hopes of placing first. I also promote the marching band throughout my community by doing different types of performances.

What is the Presidential Volunteer Award, how did you get it, and what does it mean for you to get such a prestigious award?
The Presidential Volunteer Award is awarded to individuals who complete more than 100 hours of service work. It means so much to me to have received this award. I received this award two years in a row which was such an amazing experience. To be able to give back and help others really means a lot to me.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love reading! I have been an avid reader since I was young, and I always try to preach to younger children to read as much as they can. Reading not only helps strengthen your mind but it can also transport you to a different world.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I’m actually pretty good at archery. I am not competitive in it nor do I hunt but I love to go out to my backyard and practice. It helps me release my stresses and connect with nature.

3 Things on your bucket list
I am a pretty adventurous person. I would love to be able to skydive, go white water rafting, and sit passenger in a race car.

Tell us about your non-profit called CASH's Caring Corner. How did you start it, what is it for, and what are your roles and responsibilities?
CASH’s Caring Corning is my non-profit organization with the mission to promote volunteerism within your corner of the world regardless of how big or small those efforts are. I started it at the beginning of 2020. This is my Caring Corner, where I can make a difference in my corner of the world. I am CEO and founder. My responsibilities are to report activities to my board, develop and plan projects for the non-profit to work on. I collect donations, mail letters, and balance the budget among other things. Some of the projects are: Letters of Hope, Mary’s Angel’s and my newer project Forever Friends Friendship Bracelets.

Share with us your dance journey.
I started dancing when I was 4 years old. I picked up a pair of pom-poms and told my mom I wanted to be a cheerleader. This launched my long commitment to dance. I practice between 12-20 hours a week. Along the way I have worked and danced with many great people. I started at Kesters School of Dance and have many great memories. I moved into competitive dance and now belong to Studio 19 Dance Complex in Mars, Pa. I have studied many types of dance including: tap, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, clogging, acro, popping, breakdancing, hiphop.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from cheer?
My favorite memory from cheering is winning Regionals this year. My team worked hard on their routine and we wanted to win. We spent every day after school practicing. Right before competition a couple of us were quarantined because of COVID. It was stressful to not be at practice because you were exposed. It felt like wasted time sitting at home. I understand the reasoning, but it was very frustrating. Regardless, we were able to finally get back together, practice hard and win. We move on to compete at States in March and I am looking forward to the challenge.

Tell us more about Citrus Perfect Jr. Teen.
In July from the 30-August 1, 2021 I will compete for the Title of World's Perfect Junior Teen (13-15 years). I am very excited to compete this year and have worked hard at overcoming some of my fears. It has always been difficult for me to speak to other people. I began this journey to put myself out there. Along the way, I have learned important life skills such as interviewing, listening and just being able to formulate an answer when someone asks a question. I have also met amazing people who have aided in my transformation.
My future goals are to attend UCLA and become a general surgeon. I choose UCLA because their medical program is highly rated. As part of this goal, it is important for me to take honors and AP class to maintain a high GPA.

Picture
Photography by Carlos Velez
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a very conscientious student. Education is another area of importance for me. Through education I will obtain my goal of becoming a general surgeon. I am very proud of my 4.75. I am taking 1 AP class and 3 honors. I recently earned High Honors. Geometry was my hardest subject and I had to get a tutor, but I think it's important to realize when you need someone elses help.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
I would present the topic of volunteering within their community. It is important for everyone to understand that regardless of how big or small their contribution is, they can make a difference in their corner of the world. It can be volunteering for the local fire department, church, or school. It also does not have to be for an organization, taking a trash bag and walking your local street picking up trash is volunteerism. Helping at a local food pantry handing out food. All these tasks need done. If each person takes on one task, we move our communities forward. Sometimes, our kindness may be what inspires someone else to dream and succeed.

What is Letters of Hope?

Letters of Hope is a very important project to me. Over the last year, I have been writing letters to the residents of a local nursing home. During this pandemic many of our seniors were left without visitors. This is my way of bringing a little joy into their lives. Once a month I make a special gift for them. Just something small, but I wanted to inspire hope and that eventually this would all come to end and although they may not be able to see their loved ones someone still cares about them.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was winning cheerleading regionals. I was able to accomplish this by practicing long hours every day and working hard as a team.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them to follow their dream and work hard. Studying is a huge part of how I have gotten where I am today. Staying on track with schooling is very important and making sure to do all work.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I will have graduated high school and would be attending my second year at UCLA.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite pastime is spending time with my friends and family. You don’t realize how important it is until the opportunity is taken away from you.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Most people don’t know that I can play a violin and the clarinet.

3 Things on your bucket list?
I want to Travel to Europe and see the Eiffel Tower. I want to go to Bora Bora, and I want to learn to surf.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find it inspiring when I see friends or family members accomplishing their goals. It reminds me that I can accomplish mine.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think others are inspired by my kindness. I make it a point to treat all people with kindness. I also believe that others are inspired by athletic and academic abilities. I mean if I can do it, then they definitely can too!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
One more thing I want to share is to ALWAYS believe in yourself! Do not let someone else determine your dreams, your goals, or your success! YOU DECIDE!

Jordyn De La Torre

Jordyn De La Torre – Arizona
Nomination and Photography by Liebrock Photography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: At age 7 Jordyn was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. She endured months of chemotherapy and pain but persevered. She now has a 4.6 GPA is a member of countless school and community clubs and hopes to go to medical school because she was too inspired by the doctors that helped her. Not only does she participate in advanced placement classes, but she is also a student in the IB Advanced Placement program. The Nation’s most rigorous academic program. She has it all! Brains, beauty, and the biggest, most caring heart. She inspires me! I just had to nominate her!

Photography by Jennifer De La Torre

Please share your cancer journey with us and how it has inspired your medical career.
I have been raised around doctors who had diagnosed Stage IV Wilms tumor in my kidney when I was seven years old, doctors who planned out my chemotherapy afterwards, and doctors who helped facilitate my remission. They are the reason that I am alive today and why I am so happy to have the surgical scar stretched across my stomach. It was their dedication to ensure my prolonged health that has inspired me to someday become one of them.
To achieve this goal, I have dedicated much of my time and energy into my schoolwork by engaging in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program as well as numerous clubs around my school.
This adventure of an education coupled with prolonged medical complications has taught me the value of working through any hardships that may come my way so that I can come out the other side a better person. I am who I am today because of what I have been through, what the doctors around me have done for me, and the lessons I have learned along my path of education.

How has the coronavirus hindered your process and how did you work around it? Was there something positive that arose from it?
Lately my life and the world around me has been swarmed with doctors explaining the negative effects of the coronavirus and the actions that need to be taken against it. Stay home. Don’t wear a mask. Quarantine. Don’t go to school. Wear a mask. Go to school. My education has cycled between the normal coalition of students in a courtyard to paperwork filed on a laptop screen. In-person. Online. I’ve been wired up to the continuous stream of medical reports and news updates since the outburst of the pandemic.
Though coronavirus has inhibited the fluency of an organized education, it has taught me the language of self propelled knowledge. My months spent in quarantine have given way to hours of answers and research to questions I was able to formulate without the schedule of a seven-class day. Without this time spent to myself, I would not have been able to explore my own interests and discover my devotion to discovery. It was this time that has solidified my need to one day become a doctor.

As an officer & a leader, what legacy do you hope to leave behind for future leaders at Chandler Buddies?
After having spent four years as an officer for Chandler Buddies, I hope to have left a legacy of acceptance and love. I have had an incredible experience coordinating and planning countless events that have brought people with and without intellectual disabilities together. It has really taught me the value of learning from others who are not like me and the strength that can be found in diversity. I hope that future leaders of Chandler Buddies will be able to enjoy it as much as I have.

Soleil Demars - Connecticut
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Socrate Loginidis
Photography by Melissa Hartigan Photography
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Soleil Demars is an inspiring teen for a multitude of reasons that me and all around her can agree on. She is a hard-working student who also is a part of a club called best buddies. Best buddies is a club in which disabled students are given the chance to associate and talk to other students without disabilities. Soleil is not only a member of this club but a leader who organizes events and meetings for the club. She inspires many young teens with and without disabilities to go off and follow whatever dreams they want to pursue. I believe soleil deserves the opportunity to be in the next issue of inspiring teens magazine and know she would be honored and humbled to be recognized.

How long have you been a volunteer swim coach and what inspired you to get started?

I have been a volunteer swim coach since my freshman year in high school. I have coached every winter for the past three years, but unfortunately the team was unable to run this winter due to COVID-19. I had been on the East Lyme Middle School Swim team in my middle school years, and I had a great experience on the team, so I knew I wanted to stay involved with the team after graduating. After my freshman season of the high school swim team, one of my coaches who had coached me for my entire swim career asked if I would like to help her coach the ELMS swim team as a volunteer. At this point, I had been teaching swim lessons for almost a year, and I think she noticed how much I loved to teach and be around kids which is why she offered me the opportunity to help her coach swim as well.

As a leader in this area, what would your swimmers say are your strongest attributes?
As a leader in the swim area, I believe my swimmers would say that some of my strongest attributes are being patient, being positive, and being encouraging. I think they would also note that I am a very friendly person with everyone I meet and interact with, including both the swimmers and their families.

What is the Best Buddies Club and what are your roles and responsibilities as president?
The Best Buddies club at my school is a part of the international organization, Best Buddies which aims to create friendships between students both with and without physical or intellectual disabilities, by giving students with those disabilities more chances to have a “normal'' high school, college, or work social experience that they otherwise may not receive. As president of my school’s Best Buddies club at my school, it is my responsibility to keep members informed about meetings and events. I also help to keep the social media updated to help gain new members by taking pictures at meetings and events so that others can see how much fun we have! It is also my responsibility to help pair the buddy matches, and to ensure that those matches and those students who wish to have a buddy are a good match who socialize on a regular basis to help ensure that as many solid friendships are formed as possible!

You are also a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club and are the current vice president of the Leo Club in your town. Which organization do you spend the most time with and what do you love most about it?
I spend the most time with the Leo club organization. I am a very social person, so what I love most about the Leo Club is how many people I get to meet and interact with during my volunteering time with the club. It is so humbling to hear about the different lives and experiences each person shares with me, and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to meet so many people I otherwise would have never met.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I see myself still attending the University of Alabama, but as a graduate student, on my way to becoming a speech and language pathologist. Before becoming a graduate student, I also hope to take part in the study abroad program Semester at Sea. After graduating, I’m not sure where I will live, but I hope to make a difference through my career and my leading others wherever I go!

The Nomination: Sommer enjoys giving and seeing happiness in others. Every year, she asks her friends to bring a new stuffed animal in celebration of her birthday. Then, she donates the stuffed animals to MD Anderson Cancer Center to help comfort the children during their chemotherapy treatments. She volunteered with IGoPink, an organization that provided care packages to women who are fighting breast cancer, until it closed its doors this spring due to COVID-19. Tell us about your dance career.
Dance is the art of expressing myself through the way that my body moves. My body is like my own instrument. I am able to make others feel emotion simply by the movement I make when I let the music take control. I can express sadness, joy, happiness, pain, frustration, and even anger. Dance is a universal language that you don’t have to speak to understand.
I began dancing when I was 3 years old. I love to entertain, and I've always known that the stage is where I want to be. My favorite style of dance is Jazz Funk. It can be fast or slow with syncopated beats to set any mood. My favorite memories are with LA Dance Magic’s Senior Company. I am in my fourth year of LADM Company and this year I am a part of Pro Track where I am the lead dance assistant at conventions and travel to different cities throughout the United States. This opportunity gives me insight into the dance industry and business world. I have gained friendships with dancers from all over the world. I will always cherish the memories of dancing and practicing until late at night with hotel restaurant food for dinner, sharing our goals, encouraging each other, and uplifting one another.
How has Covid changed dance for you?
The studio has always been a safe haven where I am free of judgment and constantly motivated. Dance has drastically changed but the passion will always be there for me. At the beginning of the pandemic, I spent much of my time practicing my choreography, stretching, and watching YouTube videos of dance classes. Kevin Durant once said, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. Not being able to go to the studio gave me the opportunity to work even harder. Now I am having virtual and in person classes being very cautious to follow the rules of wearing a mask and sanitizing my hands and the studio. It is all worth it to be able to do what I truly Iove.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have accomplished is balancing dance and school. I love dance so much and I want to be a good student also. I work really hard at both and at an early age; I began connecting my expectations from dance to my expectations at school. This meant turning my work in on time, abiding by all classroom instructions, and staying out of trouble. I knew this behavior is what my dance teachers would expect of me outside of class. There were days when I wasn’t responsible, left my tights at home and unfortunately had to miss class, however, these experiences guided me to have the accountability of my mistakes.

Even as a senior in high school, I take pride in the discipline I have been taught throughout my dance years. I am responsible, accountable, and determined with my actions due to many of my experiences with dance. Most importantly, the people I surround myself with have never failed to be supportive. Although life is challenging, one must accept the challenge to become successful. Dance shaped me into the young woman that I am today and as I pursue my dance career, I hope to never lose who I am right now.

What is Legacy League?. What are your roles and responsibilities and what do you love most about it?
Legacy League is an organization made up of mothers and daughters who work together to fund raise and support philanthropies in our community. Several high school girls and I volunteer at the philanthropies to serve at events, sort and organize donations, and write letters to comfort senior citizens. My favorite philanthropy to volunteer for is iGoPink where we create encouraging cards and gift bags for breast cancer fighters and survivors. I experienced the loss of my aunt to breast cancer last year and started a fund for donations to IGoPink in my aunt’s name. I am very sad to say that IGoPink closed its doors due to the pandemic.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice is to put God first in your life. Always stay focused, stay positive even when things are not going well, be dedicated, and don’t let anyone tell you can’t do something. Be true to yourself and not follow others but be lead by your own passion and drive to become who God’s leads you to be.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years, I plan to start my professional dance career after completing college. I plan to dance in commercials, movies, television shows, and music videos. My biggest goal is to dance on tour with a major music artist. I love to perform and entertaining a huge audience is the kind of work I want to be doing in my future. I see myself traveling the world doing what I love. Possibly even teaching dance to young dancers who have the same dream as I do.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
My hidden talent is singing. I often break out in song and get weird looks because it is so unexpected to hear such a great voice come out of me. My mom and friends say I will get discovered one day.

Picture
Photography by NA

Who do you find inspiring?
My mother has always been my biggest advocate throughout my life. I am inspired by her dedication, determination, and optimistic attitude that she puts forth in all situations. Growing up, I have always aspired to be a commercial dancer in California. From an early age, I loved to entertain and perform in front of audiences. My mother has supported me through every dance competition, dance performance, and dance convention. Her love and support have impacted the way I have grown as both a dancer and a person. At late age, my mother went back to college to achieve her goal of a Master's degree. This has shown me the importance of continuing one's dreams until they are met by never giving up. My mother has also shown me what a role model looks like and how I can encourage others to accomplish whatever they desire.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my passion inspires others. I put my best into everything I do whether it is volunteering, my class work, teaching preschool students, or dancing. I make sure I have done my very best to complete every task with care, dignity, respect, and perseverance. I am a hard worker and I take pride in everything I do. I think others see this and are inspired by it.

Mackenzie Essner – Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Angie Reed
Photography by Kevyn Ryan Photography
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Mackenzie Essner is an inspiring teen because of her dedication to serving her community. She has volunteered with a Special Needs Cheerleading team for 6 years and at a Summer Camp for Special Needs children for 5 years. She is currently serving as President of a volunteer organization where she volunteers with Meals on Wheels, Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Assistance Ministries and A Smart Rescue.
In addition to her volunteering she is the Captain of her Cheerleading Team, National Honor Society Member, is in FFA where she has raised chickens and a pig and has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten.
Picture
Photography by Kevyn Ryan Photography

You volunteer for a lot of different organizations. Which was your first and how/why did you get started?
I started volunteering at my competitive cheerleading gym with their special needs cheer team in the division “CheerAbilities.” At the time I was around 12 years old and this position was offered to me by my mother who thought it would be something I enjoyed. I was nervous and standoff-ish at first because I felt like I was the only one who did not know what I was doing. Turns out you don’t need to know what you’re doing because helping with these kids came like second nature to me. I am greatly thankful for my mother’s ability to know me better than I know myself because now, at almost 18 years old, I have a paid coaching position with these special needs athletes including tumbling classes and cheerleading.

What is the volunteer organization you are president of, and what are your roles and responsibilities?
I currently serve as the 2020-2021 President of a mother-daughter philanthropic organization called Junior Guild. I previously served as the Sophomore Coordinator and Parliamentarian. As President, I run our monthly general meetings, create meeting plans, write our newsletters, and encourage others to exceed their volunteer hour expectations. As a member of Junior Guild, I complete volunteer hours with our Philanthropies, help plan and execute our three annual formal events, and participate in fundraising.

What is a favorite memory from volunteering?
In the summer of 2019, I was volunteering at Camp Blessing Texas, which is a summer camp that accommodates special needs individuals. I was serving my first year as a junior counselor where I was assigned a camper to care for the rest of the week. My camper was wheelchair bound, non-verbal, and fed through a G-tube. She had a hard time sleeping through the night and at the end of our 3rd day together she was exhausted, frustrated, and overall, in a bad mood. After talking to her and letting her release some frustration, we headed inside to join the other campers in the annual luau. She loved getting out of her chair and being held in order to dance. The joy on her face said everything words would never be able to, and through the duration of the luau we danced, laughed, and played together before heading back to our cabin and off to bed. Even though the day was not the best to start out, it ended with such a beautiful moment I was lucky to share with my camper.

What does being a leader in your community mean to you and what do you think is your strongest attribute as a leader?
To me, being a leader means more than telling people what to do and how to do it. A leader should be someone who sets a positive example to their peers and others around them. This kind of leadership requires not only setting a good example when you think people are watching but doing the right thing even when no one is holding you accountable. Integrity is something that a good leader should possess, and I am proud to say this quality is what prevails as my strongest leadership trait.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Consistency, growth, and just putting yourself out there is where it starts. Throughout my high school career, I have volunteered about 900 hours in my community, as big as this number sounds, it just started with one hour. When you are constant, one hour turns into two, then three, then before you know it you've made a difference in the community whether it's big or small.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
After ideally graduating from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental science in the spring of 2025, I will be starting my career as an Environmental Compliance Inspector where I will inspect anything from large corporations to small companies on their ability to comply with environmental laws, ordinances, and regulations.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Something kinda silly I do to pass the time when I’m bored is watch and create TikToks. Over the last year I have grown a small following for myself of 10k followers on the app. TikTok is a form of social media used to share videos between 15 and 60 seconds long; they can be entertaining, informative, and can be a great way to express yourself.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
From being center dancer in my cheerleading routines, to two-stepping out with friends, I have always had a knack for dancing. So, I would say my hidden talent is dancing.

3 Things on your bucket list
My number one bucket list goal is definitely to earn an Aggie ring from Texas A&M. Number two would be to travel somewhere outside of the country, and number three is to learn American Sign Language.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my past AP Environmental Science teacher, Ms. Thompson super inspiring. She is fluent in Korean from spending her summers overseas teaching children who don't have easy access to education. Without a second thought Ms. Thompson has made a long-lasting impact on her students and the world they will grow up to live in. She is so passionate about what she does and makes sure her students know their worth and what they can do to make a difference. She has taught me everything I know about environmental science and sparked the passion I have for it now. She is one of the most selfless people I know and never fails to disappoint.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think my steadfast way of loving is what makes me inspiring. I care for everything and everyone so deeply and just want to aide and love those around me because I believe everyone deserves to have someone like that. Everything I have exhibited in my life including my volunteer work, leadership, selflessness, and passion to help those around me stems from love. Love is what makes the world go around no matter what that love is for, but love for the good things in life is what creates passion and inspiration.

Tell us about your soccer career. When did you start, where & what position do you play?
I have been playing soccer for a total of 6 years. I first started playing soccer in the 7th grade. When I first started playing, I played defense but once I moved up to varsity I began playing midfield and striker.

What is a favorite memory from soccer?
I have made a lot of memories playing soccer in the past couple years, but I think my favorite memory would be when I scored my first goal off a header to tie the game up in the second half.

Tell us about your role in NHS. What are you most proud about being a member?

I am a member of NHS with about 20 other people from my school. We volunteer 20 hours as a group each year in our community. We also do 20 individual service hours a year. Last year for my service hours I helped my uncle coach a girls’ soccer team. I am proud to be an NHS member and help my community out.

That's so cool you got to go to Mexico. Tell us about your mission trips there. What were your conditions like and what did you get to do there?
Every year during the summer I get the chance to go to Nogales, Mexico with my church. Nogales is a very poor and neglected part of Mexico. When you go to Nogales you realize how lucky you are to live in the United States as they don’t have the luxury of having simple things that you’d think most people have. It makes you realize how lucky we are and thankful you are to have things like running water and toilets that flush. I really enjoy going to Mexico and helping the community there. We do things like paint houses, make concrete floors for them, and set up stable houses. I’d encourage anyone who has the chance to go on a missions trip to go and see how God can work in your life.

What did you love about it so much that you wanted to go back?
I loved just helping the community and spending time with the people. I also enjoyed seeing how God used that trip to work in my life.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I volunteered for childcare at my church. I volunteered as assistant coach for a girls soccer team.

What do you love about volunteering for childcare at your church?
I just love having an opportunity to give back to the church in anyway I can and I think that helping in childcare is one fun way to do that.

How did you get involved in assistant coaching for a girls' soccer team? What has a favorite memory with them been?
I got involved in coaching the girls’ team because I really enjoy being around the game of soccer and my uncle happened to be coaching a JV team that year. I made some good memories there but my favorite was probably watching the girls apply everything they worked hard on in practice.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
God and sports

Please share more about this topic and why you feel it's so relevant to teens today.
Im very passionate about sports and God. I think that sports are something that are so common in teens’ lives today and it is a chance for teens to have fun doing something they love. Sports are also a good opportunity to be exposed to people you normally wouldn’t be around and to make new friends and connections. Sports can expose you to people and can be a good bridge to a friendship. As a Christian I also try to use sports to be a light to others and draw people to Christ.

Emma Moore - Texas
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination and Photography by
Angie Read Photography
Issue 40 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Emma Moore is an inspiring young woman, a positive example for both teens and young adults, who are challenged with the demands of our world today.
In today's world, teens are held to high expectations and have heavy demands placed on them, like performing well in school, navigating social media, and finding their tribe. In our fast-paced world, some teens can struggle with all of these demands.
Emma inspires others with her actions and attitude, showing how to balance all these demands, all while achieving academic excellence, helping to support the surrounding community through volunteerism, and maintaining her Christian faith. And she does it all with style and grace.

What are your favorite volunteer activities and why?
My favorite volunteer activities are NAM Meals on Wheels and playing bingo with the residents at Paradise Springs Assisted Living Center. For NAM Meals on Wheels, we deliver meals to people who are homebound or who are not able to afford groceries or meals. One of my favorite experiences of doing Meals on Wheels was when we delivered meals to a lady who told us that her family was out of town. She was so glad that we had stopped by because she was super lonely and wasn’t able to get her own groceries. It made me so happy to see her smile, because I knew that I had made her day better and in turn, she made my day a lot better. It’s always the little things that can impact someone the most! I also love playing bingo with the residents at Paradise Springs because it is so fun getting to interact with all the residents. They really get into the bingo game and it’s just really great to be able to put a smile on their faces.

What do you love about volunteering?
What I love most about volunteering is being able to make someone’s day better and making an impact in my community. As teenagers, I think that we can sometimes get stuck in a loop of only caring about ourselves and volunteering has helped me to see from other people’s points of views. Because of my work as a volunteer, I have been able to learn humility and can see what other people deal with every day. The greatest part, though, is that volunteering is rewarding on both sides; by volunteering I am able to improve someone else’s day and their happiness in turn makes me happy and feel warm inside.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

Why should others get involved in volunteering?
Everyone should experience volunteering at some point in their life because it can make you a better person and help you to see how even small acts of kindness can make a huge impact on the world. I think that especially in our world today with social media, we have become very shallow and tend to only care about ourselves and don’t understand how our actions impact others. Acts of service help us to see what others who are less fortunate than ourselves go through and open our hearts to humility and compassion toward complete strangers.

What is your biggest struggle this year and how are you overcoming it, or how did you overcome it?
In March when the pandemic started, what we considered “normal” completely changed in the blink of an eye. I think just adjusting to the idea of this “new world” that we are living in has been the hardest part for me. Social interaction has completely changed, and everything is so different than what we’ve been used to. It has been hard to adjust to all the changes but talking to my friends and family has really helped me to feel some type of normalcy. Just having friends and family be there for me has helped me a lot during these changing times and I am super thankful for them.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I see myself in medical school. I plan on going to medical school to become a neurologist because I want to help people with mental illnesses. My grandpa, who I was really close to, recently passed away. He had Alzheimer’s which is a horrible mental disease that affects many people around the world. There is not a lot known about the cause of it or how to treat it. Because of the experience that my family and I had with my grandpa, I know how much it can impact people’s lives and how devastating it can be for the entire family. I want to help other families so that they might not have to go through what my family went through.

3 Things on your bucket list:
3 things on my bucket list are travelling the world, visiting New York City during Christmas time, and meeting Harry Styles.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?

How important life choices are and how they could impact your life later. Learning from other people’s bad decisions showed me how to make better decisions throughout my life.

What are your biggest struggles and how do you combat them?
My biggest struggle is dealing with stress. If I ever feel overwhelmed, I make lists and organize my thoughts, then I try to relax and tackle my list one by one. This way I can visualize everything I'm accomplishing all while knocking things off of my list.

How did the pandemic impact you during your senior year of high school?
The pandemic impacted me in so many ways. This year has brought on so many obstacles for me to face. With the schools shutting down because of Covid-19, I had to stay on top of my schoolwork, care for my 4-month-old sister, and help my 6 year old sister with her schoolwork as well. Although it can get stressful sometimes, I know I can push through it. After my senior year I know that I will be a stronger person.

What volunteer work do you do and why is it so important to you?
I participate in volunteer activities within my school. I think it is very important to be involved within the school because it's my way of giving back to my community!

What would you say is the best way of making important decisions now to plan for the future?
The best way to make important decisions now for the future is to always choose what's best for you! Follow directions, help others in need, and if life gets you down always keep pushing through it.

Sofia Weidknecht – Colorado
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Photographer Jennifer Denton Photography
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: In late March, 2020, Sofia Weidknecht and her younger sister Kate decided on their own that they would start a GoFundMe page for the Denver Public School Food Security Fund. Some children in the DPS system rely on this meal as their one and only hot meal of the day so when Covid hit, the girls knew they had to help. With the backing of their dance company, in less than a month, the girls were able to raise over $10,000 dollars to feed hundreds of DPS kids.
Picture

Congratulations on your success with the GoFundMe Page. What led to the GoFundMe page you started for Denver Public School Food Security Fund?
I have family in the Denver Public School system, and I knew that there are a lot of families that rely on the school system to get breakfasts and lunches. I was concerned about how kids would get their food when we were on COVID lockdown and didn’t know how they would stay healthy through the quarantine season. My sister and I brainstormed and with the help of our dance company, we managed to raise over $10,000 for these kids in need!

How did you get people to know about it and to donate to it?
When we first started it, we asked family and friends from our dance company to donate a few dollars to help us get started. As we began to gain leverage, we put links on our social media profiles and got a ton of donations through that. Eventually, we had the opportunity to go on our local TV news station and that is what blew our GoFund me up. We got hundreds of donations over the span of two weeks and really made me and my sister realize how easy it was to make an impact on people’s lives.

Picture

Tell us about the National Charity League. What do you do it in and what do you love about it?
National Charity League is a super fun organization where you have the opportunity to give back to your community in so many different ways through so many different charities. My personal favorite charity is Meals on Wheels, and I love that one because it gives me a chance to drive around the city of Denver and give back to people who really need it. The people receiving the food are so thankful and it’s so cool to see your impact first-hand.

That's exciting you started your own business in 8th grade. Tell us more about it. What was the hardest part about starting it and how did you advertise? Do you still have it?
The business that I created was called The Babysitting Bag, and it was a backpack that was easy to carry around to babysitting jobs with toys, coloring books, as well as first aid things like bandaids, antiseptic wipes, and instructions for CPR. The most challenging part of the whole experience was writing an entire business plan for my product. My product was completely unique which made it hard to answer some of the questions about competitors but through school advertisements, I ended up almost selling out. I stopped making more products after the end of 8th grade, however, I do have a couple of backpacks in my room that I haven’t gotten around to selling yet!

Picture

Your dance experiences sound super exciting. Tell us more about your opportunities.
One of the most memorable opportunities I had last year was performing for the Special Olympics in Denver. This wasn’t one of our bigger performances, and it was in a gymnasium. We performed right before the basketball game started and I will never forget the faces of the people we performed for. They watched every move, and it was so quiet, we could hear a pin drop. After we finished, they gave us the biggest round of applause we could ask for. After the performance, we made posters and went around to the games cheering them on, and it was overall a super rewarding performance to be able to put those smiles on people's faces.

Charlotte Stant – New Jersey
Interview by Inspiring Teens Team
Nomination and Photography by
Jenn Morris Photography
Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Three weeks into the quarantine, Charlotte Stant received a text from a local councilwoman explaining that there were immigrant families starving in Red Bank. Secondary to COVID exposure, these families were unable to access services provided by local food banks.
Charlotte made a flyer asking people to drop off food to her house. After delivering the inaugural meals to 25 families, she decided to apply for non-profit status. Since March, Charlotte and her 20 weekly teen volunteers have provided over 68,000 meals and served 56 families. Charlotte was also just named a Brawny Giant for her community service during the pandemic.

Tell me about the text message that started this whole endeavor and where you went from there.
Risa Clay is a councilwoman and former principal of a local high school. When she discovered that there were families who needed assistance applying for a grant application and only spoke Spanish, she immediately texted me and asked me to help because she knew of my ability to speak the language. I started making phone calls to families to assist her in getting applications filled out.

How did you get everyone to help you so quickly and in such abundance when pretty much everything was shut down, and how it quickly started your nonprofi, Companeros?
I spent 5-8 hours a day working all the logistics out. Fundraising was the biggest challenge in the beginning, especially as the list of families who needed help kept growing. We created an Instagram account and made posts every week to involve the community. I also created a GoFundMe and asked others to post links on their Facebook accounts. I emailed my Spanish teacher who spread the word to the school and the Spanish Honor Society. The Key Club offered community service hours for each food donation given to Companeros. That was a great incentive since students had nowhere else to volunteer. As of this month we have served over 70,000 meals and assisted 74 families. The majority of the volunteers go to Rumson Fair Haven High School with me.

What does it mean to be a Mobile Mexican Consulate?
The Mobile Mexican Consulate is an organization that assists Mexican citizens with filling out their US citizenship applications as well as applying for passports. I served as a translator for Consulate. I also helped fill out cards explaining what to do if they were to come into contact with ICE. Many of the community members were extremely fearful.

Why did you want an internship with Senator Gopal, and how did you go about getting it? What are your primary responsibilities?
I am interested in the legislative process and the internship provided me with the perfect opportunity to deep dive into my passion for policy. I applied online and was interviewed before I was notified that I was accepted as an intern. Instead of finishing after the summer, I decided to continue my internship into the fall. Some of my primary responsibilities for the job include drafting social media posts for each of the legislators as well as conducting extensive policy research. I have also been tasked with drafting talking points for various bills to be presented in congressional hearings.

Tell us more about your jobs as a dance instructor and certified yoga teacher! Both sound exciting!
I started teaching dance in the beginning of my junior year to marginalized children at my local Salvation Army. Sadly, COVID regulations have closed the dance program, but as soon as we are cleared to gather again, I will be the lead teacher. I absolutely love teaching kids and really was able to see the impact that dancing had on their character development and overall mood. I decided to pursue my 200 hour yoga teacher training the summer between my sophomore and junior years with Bodhi Yoga Academy.

Tell us about these Brawny Paper Towel Pictures.
In June, Lynette Sylvestri, a community member who was following the Instagram posts about my non-profit Compañeros de Comida, saw an ad from Brawny Paper Towels about a new campaign called “Giants Take Action”.  According to senior director of brand building at Brawny, Katie Kolesky, “The Brawny Giants Initiative celebrates and supports the strength demonstrated by individuals who are taking action during the pandemic”.  Ms. Sylvestri believed that I had the characteristics of a local hero.On July 22nd, I was notified that I was a finalist for the campaign.  I was then called by a representative from Brawny who interviewed me about my mission, statistics and operational expenses.  The next week, I was texted by the advertising agency Joan and informed that I was selected out of 7000 nominees, and that I would receive a $3000 grant for my non-profit as well as 900 Brawny paper towels to share with my families.  I will also be featured in the Brawny Giant ad campaign through print, social media and television spots over the next two years.

Harlyn Hogan - Arkansas
Nomination by Rhonda Sylvester
 Photography by Kerri Hogan
Issue39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Harlyn is an amazing young woman who has already volunteered more than 800 hours at the age of 16. Her project, Hunger Heroes, was designed to assist those with food insecurities in central Arkansas. She has held food drives, collected donations, and even planted a garden in her own yard so that people could have access to fresh vegetables. She volunteers at local hospitals, in her school and is very involved with the North Little Rock Mayor's Youth Council. She has collected donations to create Care Kits for homeless women and held a blanket drive. She is inspiring to us!

I started volunteering when I was 12 years old at my dance studio by being a “dance buddy” for the iCan Dance Program which provides dance classes for children with disabilities. I now do most of my volunteering through the North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council (NLRMYC). I have accumulated well over 750 hours of service in my community since becoming involved with the North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council during my 9th grade year. I love helping those that are less fortunate and providing them with the little things that most of us take for granted. When giving of yourself to someone who truly has a need and seeing the sincere appreciation on their faces it makes my heart fill with pride in knowing that I can make a difference for people in our community.

The North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council was started in 1999. It is a community-based volunteer program run by a former school teacher named Jan Scholl. The program is for local high school students who are looking for volunteer opportunities. I learned of the North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council from friends who had participated and from a few members of my soccer and cheer teams that were involved with the council. As a member of the North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council you are required to have four hours of community service per month, and, as a senior, you have to create a project of your own. My favorite memory from the North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council to date is my most recent project of providing an Easter for the children at the Dorcas House. The Dorcas House takes in and houses battered women and their children with the compassion of Christ. My sister, Revell, and I collected donations from our community by offering to fill and hide plastic Easter eggs for families in the community. We raised over $1000 dollars and filled over 800 eggs with candy, stickers, etc. Eleven other council members helped us play Easter Bunny the night before Easter by delivering and hiding the stuffed eggs for the 24 customers who donated to the cause. My sister and I also made Easter baskets for the children of the Dorcas House. The staff and families at the Dorcas House were so thankful when we dropped off the Easter baskets for the children. Showering these unfortunate children with gifts and an Easter surprise was so heartwarming. Also, the remaining funds raised from the Easter egg donations were given to an organization called the Smile Train. The money donated was used to perform corrective surgery for three children with cleft lips and pallets.

I love starting my own projects and this is my main way of collecting my hours and volunteering because I love being a creative leader. I want to encourage others to start new projects in their community and bring people together for the better. I love to give back and this is one of the best ways I can. The project that I just started with the Mayor's Youth Council as an 11th grader is "Hunger Heroes''. I am collecting nonperishable food items for local food banks. I am in the middle of my project, so I do not have my results, but I am looking forward to donating over 1,000 cans(etc.) to my local Food Pantry by the end of October! I came up with this project because it was National Hunger Action and Awareness month in September and I wanted to help spread awareness. More than 200,000 children in Arkansas are at risk of hunger and not getting the food they need to live healthy, active lives. I love to start new projects and give to different and new programs for each project. Spreading my love and giving to different programs brings the community together more and expands my experiences and knowledge.

I started my Small Home Garden over quarantine this spring. I have had lots of help from my parents, especially my mom, Kerri Hogan. I have not had the best of luck with it, but I am learning and the more I move things around the better it gets! I had one really big zucchini this summer that was my first big vegetable. I have lots of tomatoes and baby bell peppers growing now! I hope that I can keep learning and growing my garden even bigger to feed the hungry in my community. It needs lots of work, but it has grown tremendously since dirt!! I hope to encourage others to grow vegetables and fruits and start their own garden because our world needs it along with our community. Let’s save our health, the hungry, and our earth!

Volunteering in my community is worth my time because as much as I do for myself, I need to do as much or more in return for others who are less fortunate. I volunteer because it makes a difference. The more I volunteer, the more I learn and grow. I dedicate so much of my time to volunteering because it is a big part of my heart and what I love. Volunteering makes me feel more connected to others and become less absorbed in the stresses of my busy daily life. The experience is amazing, and I truly feel your actions define you. To date, I have earned 892 community service hours and my goal is over 1,000 by the time I graduate high school. I encourage everyone to take action and volunteer in your community!
