Nomination: Noah is an exceptional young man who works hard at anything he does. He is a great leader within his FFA organization and his school. Noah is currently working on collecting canned foods for a church backpack program to help individuals working our school district. Tell us about your love for music. How did you get started and where are you with it now?

I have had a love of music for a very long time, starting when I began playing mandolin when I was 8. My music teacher helped me find this love by showing me music that I enjoyed playing. Later, I started playing guitar and found a new love for that. Then I started to sing and play more, and this brought me to where I am now.

What type of music do you like to play?
I usually play folk, country and western, and blues on my acoustic guitar. I enjoy playing old traditional folk and blues songs and newer country and western songs.

What is your favorite song to sing - or your go-to song?
Currently, my favorite song to play is The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie by Colter Wall.

If you could perform on stage with any band or musician, who would it be and why?
If I could play with any musician I would choose to play with Colter Wall. He influenced me to start singing and playing and inspires me to want to make my own music.

If an aspiring musician shadowed you for a day, what would you teach them?
I would teach them to always push themselves to learn more about music and to and never get stuck in the cycle of playing the same songs, so they can continue to improve.

Where do you get to play your music, how often, and what is it like for you before, during and after a performance?
I have been able to play my music at various places. I have played at our annual FFA Church Service, at my school on the senior sendoff, and in front of small groups of my friends. I only get to perform at random times and never have a set time that I plan to play. I get a great feeling from performing and love being able to share my music and see people enjoy it as well.

What was your experience like with Whitney Atwood Photography? What did you love most about it? What surprised you most?   I don’t usually enjoy getting my picture taken, but Whitney made it easy.  She kept things lighthearted, and I appreciate her effort to reflect my personality and style in the photos.   I am surprised to see the images Whitney captured from ordinary backroad locations that I pass by every day.

What has your experience with FFA been like?
FFA has taught me many life skills that help me every day. It has helped me grow as a person and let me meet many amazing people. If it wasn’t for FFA, I would not be where I am today, or have experienced as much success.

What is your favorite part to participate in and why?
My favorite competition so far from FFA has been Parliamentary Procedure. My Parli Pro team and I have been very successful in this competition.  We recently won Illinois State Parli Pro and are preparing for the national competition.  Parli Pro is an extremely exciting and rewarding event and for this, it is by far my favorite.

Have you had any leadership roles within the organization, and if so, which ones?
I have been the Chapter Secretary during my Senior year and have been the chairmen of various committees such as ag awareness, the hootenanny, and the farm follies.

What have you learned about yourself after being an FFA member?
I have learned that I can achieve anything I set my mind to, and that hard work is one of the most valuable things there is.

What are your favorite accomplishments from this organization?
My favorite accomplishment has been my Parliamentary Procedure team winning the Illinois State Parli Pro competition. My Ag issues team received first place in our district. I received STAR Placement in Section 23, third place in my district for extemporaneous speaking, and second place in weed identification at Murray State.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am a member of the National Honor Society and on the Scholar Bowl Team. This spring, I was selected as All-Conference for Scholar Bow.
It also doesn't cover my future plans.

What is your favorite part about being a member of NHS? I feel a sense of accomplishment to have met the grade requirements to be on the National Honor Society where I hold the office of president.

What is the Scholar Bowl Team and what is your role on it? Scholar Bowl is a trivia-based competition between schools.  I look at it as place to put some of my useless knowledge to use.

What does being on this team mean to you? It pushes me to learn more, but mostly we just have fun.

What are your future plans? I plan to attend Olney Central College to attain a welding degree as well as an Associate of Science.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I am most passionate and never tire of talking about my music.

What should we know about you?
I would like you to know that I am a dancer and have been for 15 years of my life. I love taking pictures and using my creativity in as many ways as possible! When it comes to trying new things, I always try my best to accept the challenge and see how far it takes me.

Tell us about your dance career.
M y love for dance began when I was 2 years old. I was always the kid who enjoyed trying new things, so I tried sports like t-ball. However, as soon as I took my first dance class, I fell in love! I have always loved the creative space and open opportunity for new movement that dance allows.

What dances do you practice, and which are your favorite?
I practice all kinds of dance styles! Some of these include ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, and even ballroom! Out of all these dance styles, I have always had a unique love for contemporary.

Which do you prefer, competition dance or performance?
Competition dance carries a lot of responsibility and a much greater challenge in my opinion. Therefore, I definitely prefer competition dance.
My favorite competition has got to be Showbiz Talent Competition in Daytona, Florida of 2019 because this was the competition where I won the title of Miss Teen Showbiz for the very first time!

What is a big accomplishment you have had in dance?
A very big accomplishment that I have made in dance would have to be the time that I was presented an Apprentice Award at Platinum National Dance Competition. This award allowed me to assist major dance choreographers in teaching dance classes all around.

What was a favorite performance and what was your role?
My favorite performance was at my former high school, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. It was our annual Student Choreography Concert, and I was one of the lead dancers in one of my own friend's dance!

How did you find and why did you choose Alyssa Chappell Photography for your senior photographer?

I initially heard about Alyssa Chappell from my friends I used to go to school with in elementary school. I saw her work and loved everything about her. From her editing style to simply capturing the right moment in each individual, I just knew I needed to contact her for my Senior Pictures right away!

What do you like taking pictures of?
Photography has always been a passion of mine. I absolutely adore the way a lens can capture natural beauty and enhance it the way it does. Specifically, I like taking pictures of other people in their element.

Tell us about a favorite picture you've taken - we'd love to see it too!
One of my favorite pictures I have ever taken was of my boyfriend playing his final baseball game in high school. He loves this sport and has played it all his life. I truly feel like this picture captured his love and the magic on the field during his final game!

What was your experience like with ACP? What did you love most about it?

My experience with ACP was unreal! There was never an awkward moment. Alyssa Chappell is very personable, outgoing, and makes sure she is fully aware of her client's needs before their actual photoshoot. My session with ACP was an all-day session and throughout the whole day, I had the day of my dreams all at the same time of getting the best possible pictures to show me at the end of my Senior Year.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some inspiring things about me that my nomination does not cover us that I am the 2022 Miss Bradford Fest winner. So far, I have helped with Swine, Steer, and Cattle shows, as well as, participating with fair booths and helping the younger kids with me!

What did it entail to be the 2022 Miss Bradford Fest winner? What are your roles and responsibilities with this title?
Being the 2022 Miss Bradford Fest requires discipline, responsibility, time management, creativity, and most importantly, a huge heart.
With this title, some of my roles and responsibilities include being the face of many award ceremonies, participating in our local fair throughout the week, riding along in our local parades as well as, parades in surrounding counties, etc.

What specifically do you do to help at the Swine, Steer , and Cattle shows?
Specifically, as the 2022 Miss Bradford Fest winner I was able to stand alongside the younger Bradford Fest winners and present the Swine, Steer, and Cattle winners with their awards at the end of their shows.

What do you do in the fair booths?
In the fair booths, we all set up one to two days prior to the fair opening and sat in the fair booth waving at everyone, signing autographs, and passing out mini tiaras and beaded necklaces to the little kids.

What do you love most about working with the younger kids?
This is a topic I absolutely love talking about!! What I love most about working with the younger kids is being able to pour into their lives over an extended period of time and being able to watch how their life changes and transforms over the years. Every person has the "ups and downs" in their lives and one of the best parts about working with the younger kids is definitely being able to go through those times with them.

Photography by Alyssa Chappell Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers it would be on kindness. I could talk forever about this topic because I feel that it truly is important to always show kindness to whoever you are around. You never know what someone next to you is going through or how their life is behind the scenes. When you see someone who is always kind, it radiates and is made known as a message to others as well!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever had to accomplish was probably my fear of speaking in front of people. I wouldn't say that I am no longer afraid, but I have learned to get better with this by saying yes to every chance I got to speak along with the help of my friends.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Some advice I believe I would give someone who wants to be where I am today is to learn to fall in love with yourself and not compare yourself to others because where I am today would not be possible without the hot mess version of me from even a year ago. Every day is a chance for growth. Take it and cherish it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In 5 years, I hope to be married to the love of my life, with the career of my dreams. I hope to be happy with wherever the Lord guides me between now and those 5 years.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity or pastime that was not in my nomination is Hand Lettering. I have my own Hand Lettering business called Hand Lettering by Kylee showing my creativity in all things hand lettering.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are to ride horses on the beach, swim with sea life, and live in a beach condo for a short time when I get older.

Who do you find inspiring?
Every day my mother inspires me. She works so hard, provides for the family, splits her attention a million different ways 24/7, and still finds time to have fun.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that I am inspiring for how kind I am to people. I genuinely believe that it has gotten a lot harder to come across people who are kind and mean it, without wanting anything in return. So, my kindness radiates, and I hope others can see it and know that beauty lies within the heart.

What type of music do you like and do you play any? Tell us more.
I enjoy all types of music, but I mainly enjoy rap, hip hop, and r&b. I don't play any music, but I have always wanted to play the guitar. I really enjoy music from artists like Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Kanye West, and Denzel Curry because they don't just make music that sounds good but also tells a story and I just find that very entertaining.

Share with us your involvement of volunteering at your local homeless shelter. What do you do specifically and what keeps you going back each year?
Every year the baseball team goes down and helps carry thanksgiving meals out to family’s cars. These families can't afford their own meals, so the community raises money and donates food for these families. We go every year because it is nice to see the smiles on people’s faces as you make their holiday.

How did you find out about the opportunity to help adults with disabilities this summer and why is this an ideal position for you?
We found this through a family friend. It is ideal for me because I get to help those who need it and get to make some new friends.

Sophie Baumgartner

5/17/2022

Picture

Sophie Baumgartner – Ohio
Nomination by Kimberly Baumgartner
Photography by 12.9 Dance
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Sophie is the epitome of inspiration. At 13 years, Sophie encapsulates inspiration in everything she does. The perseverance she approaches dance is uplifting. She practices continually to get the step, land a move, or nail a routine with an inner drive most would envy. Sophie is kind to all around her, encouraging and motivating peers, and teammates to be their best. She is eager to learn and succeed in all she does. She pushes to keep going even when she isn’t feeling her best. I am privileged to witness the young woman she is striving to become.

What should we know about you?
Dance is in my heart and soul. I dance through life…my body is in constant motion, always moving to music, beats or choreography in my head. Dance carries over to my other activities such as cheerleading, gymnastics, even simply taking a walk. When a song comes on, I imagine how to bring the song to life through dance. If I have a bad day, dance can always cheer me up. When I’m dancing, I’m not thinking about the stress of being a teen, I just focus on the music and let it take away the worries of the outside world.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
As a child I was very shy. I was diagnosed with Selective Mutism and never talked to anyone outside my immediate family. I started dancing at age 3 and I found comfort in it because I could express myself through moving rather than talking. When I look back at where I was then and how far I’ve come, it’s truly amazing. Now I am constantly reaching out to people and making new friends. I can now express myself in many ways, but dance has been and continues to be my number one way of expressing my emotions.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would like to share how my passion is what keeps me grounded. We all have dark days, and we all have tough times, but what I have found is that having that “thing” you can hold on to can get you through even some of the harder moments. Dance isn't always a solo activity. I would be lost without my dance family. They lift me up, encourage me and bring me comfort and joy. They are my people.

Olivia Travis – West Virginia
Nomination & Photography by Michelle Travis

Nomination: Olivia Travis had been an active volunteer since the age of 6. Her most recent project is called The Prom Connection, which is a store that provides free gowns, cocktails, suits, make-up, and accessories to middle and high school kids. The store offers a full shopping experience, allowing the customers to choose the outfit of their dreams. Community members and businesses have provided items and monetary donations that have enabled more than 60 students to be outfitted for their 2022 prom. This will continue to be an annual event put on by Olivia in Martinsburg, WV.

What should we know about you?
The Prom Connection, the initiative I started myself and reason I was nominated for this honor, is what I would like to be interviewed more deeply about. I would also like to talk about my community involvement over the course of 10 years. However, it is important to express I am just an average teen. If I can do it and make a difference, you can too!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Even though I spend so many hours dedicated to making a difference, I still find time to pursue my passion of dance, I challenge myself with academics and currently maintain a 4.6 GPA in the honors/AP track, and I set aside time for family and close friends. I am proof that you can do all you set your mind to with time management, dedication, and pure desire to make things happen.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Volunteerism! As a titleholder, and your current Miss West Virginia’s Outstanding Teen, the importance of volunteerism has been something I’ve been promoting since I was just 6 years old! I am beyond proud so say that I have gotten so many of my peers just as excited about helping others as me, and many of them tag along in many of my service projects. Often, volunteers don’t necessarily have the time, but we have the heart.

What should we know about you?
My dance career within the dance industry as a black LGBT dancer to represent people of diversity in the dance world!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Think about how many Misty Copelands were undiscovered due to the fact they couldn’t pay money to collect dance training or go to dance conventions. Picture

Camden Francis –Massachusetts
Nomination & Photography by Elaine Thompson
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Camden Francis attends a prep school in Massachusetts. He is the founder of Beyond the Crisis, a non-profit organization that donates non-perishables to underprivileged families. He started BTC with his 13-year-old brother, Colton. They established the food distribution charity after the pandemic drove home for them the importance of helping others who are struggling to put food on their tables. One of the organizations they help is Catholic Charities of Boston. They’ve helped over 500 families. The brothers were recently on a well-known Talk Show in NYC. Camden was also nominated for Nickelodeon Kid of the Year in 2021.

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
Camden would most like to be interviewed about why he started the charity organization; what it means to him and the families that he helps. Camden would also like to be interviewed about the process of starting his own organization. Additionally, he’d like to talk about the importance of giving back and being an example for others that you are never too young to make a difference.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
One inspiring thing about Camden that wasn’t covered in the nomination is that he has always been involved with community service projects. Among those are working in a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, and assembling and distributing Thanksgiving dinners to inner-city families.
During the height of the pandemic, Camden wrote monthly letters to senior citizens who were shut-in to uplift and encourage them during those difficult times.
Camden hosted multiple sessions of a virtual soccer and fitness camp which he founded (amidst the pandemic) to help athletes with disabilities. Camden’s camp ensured that these kids got significant exercise.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
A topic that Camden would enjoy presenting to a group of his peers is the importance of civic engagement; each of us have an obligation to help others. From a young age, Camden’s parents have instilled in him the desire to put others first and treat everyone with respect and dignity.

Nomination: Ansley is such an inspiration to younger female athletes. When assisting in coaching or helping with a youth clinic she males makes sure they learn how to have fun and how to love the game, but really shows them how to have great work ethic. Ansley teaches the young female athletes that you have to work hard and never give up just because something maybe difficult. Ansley works hard to show young girls you can achieve your goals on and off the field if you put in the work. Ansley inspires me as her mother to be better by being such a great role model for young female athletes.

What should we definitely know about you?
If there is one thing I would like for people to know about me is my heart and my caring for others. I often put others before myself and love to see the people I care about succeed. The people I love are the most important to me and I will always put them before myself.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I believe a main point that isn’t covered in my nomination is how determined I am. I have played the sport of softball for as long as I can remember and is a very important part of my life. Throughout the sport there has been many ups and downs, but thankfully due to my determination I always come out the other side. Softball has shaped me into the person I am today and I’m so thankful.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be
I am very passionate about sport’s and how it can affect a young child’s growth. A child growing up through sports can allow them to learn and experience things that you don’t see in your daily life. Playing a sport you can learn a lot more than just the sport, you can also learn many life lessons.

Laney Corlew – Tennessee
Nomination & Photography by KEngland Photography
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Laney is the definition of inspiring. You will fall in love with her infectious smile and gorgeous personality instantaneously. Her kind spirit will leave an everlasting impression on anyone she meets. The compassion she shows to others is genuinely thoughtful. Laney is hardworking, goal-seeking, and determined. She is a member of National Honors Society, Student Council, FCA, and HOSA president. Laney received her CPR and Trauma Response certification while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is attending the University of Tennessee at Knoxville this fall, where she has been accepted to the nursing program. Laney plans to become a forensic nurse.

Picture

What would you most like to be interviewed about?
I would love to be interviewed about why I decided to become a nurse! I had a spinal fusion to correct scoliosis at age 13 and experienced firsthand the impact that nurses have on patients and their recoveries!

Tell us more about that and the impact it had on your decision.
Having a spinal correction at 13 entailed a five-day hospital stay. I was young, in pain, and terrified. The nurses I interacted with all brought positivity and motivation to my room when they entered. I always ask lots of questions when doing new things and each nurse that took care of me was extremely patient and answered every question I had. I knew after that hospital stay that I wanted to be a nurse so that I could care for and ease anxiousness for someone the same way it was done for me.

What are you doing now to help prepare for this career?
I have been accepted to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s nursing program! I also have taken several honors sciences courses throughout my high school career, as well as two health science pathway courses.

What did you have to do to prepare for the CPR and Trauma Response certification?
To prepare for the CPR certification, I studied long hours and practiced CPR hands-on. It was a stressful period, especially when it was test time, but I am thankful for my knowledge and ability to save a life if needed! Becoming Trauma Response certified required weekly courses for 8 weeks. My class and I watched instructional videos and then had open discussions about the topics covered. This class broadened my perspective of how childhood trauma impacts a child’s life into adulthood.

Why did you choose forensic nurse specifically?
I chose forensic nursing specifically because I want to be an advocate for patients who are not always in the position to speak up for themselves. Everyone deserves to have a voice, even if that person feels weak and helpless.

Why did you choose KEngland Photography for your senior photographer? What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I chose KEngland Photography for part of my senior pictures because I absolutely adore her work! We had an amazing time on my family farm taking pictures. I love how adventurous Kristen is! A dream of mine was to have pictures done with the cattle I had bottle-fed on our farm, and she got in the pasture with me and made it happen!

What do you love most about being in NHS?
Through NHS, I can serve my community in many ways. I love doing service projects with NHS (National Honors Society) because it brings me out of my comfort zone to do things that benefit others. This past fall, our NHS Chapter renovated the landscaping at our high school’s football field. The repairs were much needed, and our fans were able to enjoy them for the football season!

What will you miss most about being on student council?
I will miss all the people I met through student council. Our student council is composed of grades 9-12, and the members change every year. I was able to meet students that I did not have classes with and make friendships I otherwise wouldn’t have made!

What is FCA and what do you do in it?
FCA is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Once a week, we meet in the mornings before school and have a devotional. The students that attend can cultivate friendships with other Christians and study God’s word. FCA has been the perfect midweek study to motivate members to stay faithful in their Christian walk.

What was your biggest leadership role as president of HOSA?
As president of HOSA, I have been responsible for leading meetings, delegating tasks, and coordinating with our club sponsor. My biggest leadership role as president is organizing blood drives! RedCross comes to our school quarterly, and I help our sponsor assign club members to work the blood drive and make sure it runs smoothly.

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is my ability to jump in and take charge while staying calm. I believe that every problem has a solution, even if the solution is unexpected and unprepared for.

What have you learned about yourself being in these leadership positions?
Through my involvement in clubs and leadership positions that I work extremely well under pressure. Though I do get stressed out, I am able to rise to the challenge and get the job done. I am thankful for these experiences and for the many learning opportunities I had through these leadership positions!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
In my spare time, I work on my family's farm. The calf in my nomination photo, Daisy Belle, was a calf that was born during a snowstorm. She was almost frozen when my Daddy and I found her. We worked together to nurse her back to health, and she is doing amazing now! I had always liked animals but working with my Daddy to keep her alive gave me a new love for cattle and agriculture altogether.

What is the best part of living on a farm that people who don't may not realize?
Many people do not realize that living on a farm gives you an entirely different perspective on life. Hardwork has an extremely different meaning on a farm, and anyone who farms understands exactly what I mean. I learned how to be patient with animals that cannot communicate their needs like humans, and to care for animals and equipment that many do not understand.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic to a group of my peers, I would discuss the importance of kindness. Bullying, comparison, and social media impact the way we see ourselves every day. By creating a positive environment and mindset, we can cultivate a better society for the upcoming generation to live in.

Myah Smith

Myah Smith – Wisconsin
Nomination & Photography by Jodi Smith
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Myah Smith is inspiring because she has ambitions that have propelled into being a leader and role model. She has been drag racing since she was 11 and I have seen for myself how she inspires younger female racers with her confidence, humbleness and kindness. Myah has been the FFA President at her school for two years. She has also decided to become a police officer in her future. I cannot say enough of what an inspiration Myah is. She shows that girls can be leaders and role models, no matter what the circumstances are.

Photography by Jodi Smith

How did you get started in drag racing?

My dad is the one who got me interested in drag racing. We attended a national event in Brainerd, MN where they run the cars that you watch on tv when I was 11 years old. They ran Jr. Dragsters at the event, and that is where I showed the biggest amount of interest to start racing. One thing lead to another, and now I have been racing for 7 years.

What is your favorite thing about racing?
Drag racing is all about the family atmosphere. Everyone at the track is one big family. If you need an extra part, someone has one. If you need someone to talk to, someone is always there. If you just need somewhere to relax from a long race day, someone will always open their motor home or trailer for you.

What is the hardest thing about racing?
The hardest part about racing is seeing the younger racers use the same discipline I use on myself. Knowing what you did wrong and taking blame for your own mistakes is a huge part of racing, and how to be a successful racer. Seeing the little ones being hard on themselves is definitely something I do not like witnessing, but I know that it is necessary.

What is something about racing that people who don't race may not understand?
People who do not race probably do not understand that it is not just a press the throttle and go kind of thing. There is a lot of things that happen behind the scenes to try and get the car to run consistent. The weather also plays a huge factor on the way the engine will run.

What is a proud moment for you from racing?
A proud moment in racing for me is when I won my first ever race. The amount of support I get from my parents especially, made the first win feel that much better.

What is your next big goal in racing?
Since I age out of the Jr. Dragster after this coming season, my dad and I have plans to build up a Mustang so that both of us can race it. I will be in college next year, so we will try to make it to the racetrack whenever we have a chance to.

Photography by Jodi Smith

What was your experience like with Jodi Smith Photography? What did you love most about it?
Jodi is my aunt, so it makes shoots very comfortable and relaxing. I love that she tries and is willing to come up with new things to differ her shots from everyone else.

What made you decide to become a police officer?
I decided to become a police officer due to being interested in law enforcement for a long time. I am the kind of person who is always willing to help and wants to make sure everyone is always in a good place.

What training will you need first?
I will get my associates degree in Criminal Justice Studies starting next fall, and then I will immediately take the law enforcement academy through the same school afterwards.

What are you doing now to help you succeed as a police officer?
Currently, I am doing a mentorship program that my school puts on. I am at my local Sheriff's Department, every morning of the school week. I get to experience all the parts of the Sheriff's Department and get to have the opportunity to get a head start to my chosen career.

Picture
Photography by Jodi Smith

What is your strongest leadership quality?
My strongest leadership quality is having patience with new learners. Taking racing as an example, I will do whatever it takes to help the little ones succeed in something they enjoy doing so much, no matter how long it takes.

What is it like being FFA President?
I have been my chapter's FFA President my junior, and senior year of high school. Currently I am a senior in high school, so it is my last year in FFA. I love being able to take lead on planning certain events and seeing them pan out the way I had hoped.

What else should we know about you?
I love people and socializing. I love to be a part of a group and hanging out with friends and family. You learn from others when you step out of your comfort zone and talk to people. I have learned so much by doing this and hope others have been able to do the same when speaking with me. I also want people to know it’s okay to not be liked by everyone, sometimes you just aren’t someone’s “cup of tea” and that is okay. God made everyone in His image and we are all made for a unique purpose.

It was the biggest buck I have killed to date.

Katelyn Patterson – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Katelyn inspires to look and be her best and strives to live a happy life! She does all she can to avoid the negativity that life can throw at you and tries to always keep a good attitude. She has always been a determined girl that works hard to get what she wants. She pushes through struggles and look for the positive side of things. When she became involved with FFA, she found a love for showing livestock. Through hard work and determination over the past 4 years, she was able to achieve many goals.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography
What would you like to talk about?
My love for FFA and showing livestock but also, I really enjoy helping the younger members gain their passion for FFA.

How did you get started in FFA?
In my 8th grade year, I wanted to do Cosmetology in High School. However, when it came time to choose my classes for my freshman year, I discovered I couldn’t take Cosmetology until my Junior year, so I happened to pick an Ag Class. Taking this class opened an entirely new experience for me.

What type of livestock do you show? Why did you choose these animals?
My freshman year I choose to only show a lamb, this was my first time ever work with Livestock. I choose a lamb because I was under the impression it could be one of the more challenging animals to work with, and I was up for the challenge. My sophomore year I decided to increase my challenge by showing Lambs, Goat, Rabbits, and Heifer. I choose to work with 4 different species of livestock to increase my knowledge.

How do you prep your livestock for show?
The most important thing about showing any type of livestock is their nutrition, I worked long hours with my Ag teachers to make sure I was providing proper feeding and any other supplements they may have needed. I would also have to bathe, clip and work and work their fir/wool/hair. I would also have to work with them every day so that they would learn what they needed to do in the show ring.
Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

What is the hardest thing about showing?
No 2 animals are alike. Just because one style worked for one doesn’t mean it will work for the other. You have to learn how to handle your animal.

What goes into showing livestock that people who don't may not realize?
When showing livestock, you get close to your animal however you have to remember that most of these animals are market animals and there for are meant to be sold after I have worked with them for many months. It’s not easy to do but you learn it’s the circle of life.

How do you get to help younger members?
Every year new people join FFA, we will have new members in the Ag barn who have never worked with an animal that will struggle. Anytime I see someone that is struggling I will offer to help them and work with them until they fill like they are understanding better. I let everyone know that if they need help to just ask and I’ll will make time for them, no matter if they are new or old and just want to try something different.

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Read Photography?
Last year a friend was a member of Angie Read Photography’s Power Team for seniors, and I loved all the pictures that she had. I asked her to let me know how I could join when the time came.

What did you love most about your photoshoots?
The photoshoots are very relaxing and fun. I fill totally at ease working with Angie and the picture always look great.

What will you miss most about being on her team?
I will miss the photoshoots and working with Angie and the other team members to get great pictures.

Where would we find you if not raising/showing livestock or modeling for Angie Read Photography?
Working, I have worked numerous jobs of the past 2 years to help pay for my livestock and to also just have extra money for myself.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
No matter how difficult things are my faith, determination and passion helped me achieve my goals while not giving up.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I accomplished was to finally win a showmanship belt buckle for Lambs. I was always told I was too tall to ever win. But working with my Ag teacher I was able to finally win the award this year.

Picture

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard, don’t give up. If you get knocked down, get back up and try again. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Agriculture because that is where my passion lies and what I want to do for my career. My Ag teachers in high school have left an imprint on me and I want to be an Ag teacher to inspire the next generation as my Ag teachers have inspired me.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

Allie Harris – Tennessee
Nomination by Melody Harris
Photography by Shots by Sonja Sonja Wiseman
Issue 55 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Allie Harris is an incredible role model to her peers. She volunteers her time working as a peer tutor to children with disabilities and serves as an advocate for the Rebel Against Bullying campaign with Rebel Athletics. Both teachers and students alike talk about her kind hearted and inclusive nature. She’s a model, actress and an honors student. She’s captain of her school cheer squad, runs track and competes in All Star cheer. She was nominated by a teacher to attend the Jr National Young Leaders Conference in Washington DC this summer and plans a career in the engineering field.

What do you love about being a role model and what do you hope to instill among your peers?

I love seeing a change in people because of my influence even if its just a small one. I hope that I can encourage others to treat each other better and to be more inclusive. I hope I can help people see that it's ok to be different and to go against the norm.

Tell us about your time working as a peer tutor to children with disabilities.
How did you get started and what do you do there? I applied to be a peer tutor my 6th grade year. You have to have teacher recommendations and be approved before being selected. I work on anything the kids might need help with from help with from school work to helping with social skills. One main focus is to get the kids out into the school building so they interact with others and are included.

What do you do with them specifically?
My favorite part is helping these kids run the "Snack Wagon". On the surface, it looks like the kids are just selling snacks to teachers but it is really about so much more. The kids are involved in all parts of this little business from ordering, keeping up with inventory, social interaction, counting back correct change, and helping make deposits. The kids get so excited for this part of the day because they get out of the classroom and see everyone all over the school. I've seen kids go from barely talking to anyone to being so excited to be the first person to ask a teacher if they'd like to buy something and being so proud they know what products they have and how to count back change. I can see them building skills they will take with them long after they leave middle school.

What do you love most about working with them?
I love working to make them feel included. This group is often in their own classroom so I'm happy to have any opportunity to show them they are a very important part of our school. I'm very humbled by what I've learned about each of these kids this year. Honestly, they've taught me as much as I have taught them this year! These kids have no idea how much they've changed my life.

How did you find Shots by Sonja Wiseman & why did you choose her as your photographer? What did you love most about your photo shoot with her?

I booked my first session with Sonja because several people from my cheer gym recommended her. I started taking camera movement classes and acting classes through her as well. She's always made me feel comfortable and pushed me to do my best. She's one of the most creative photographers I've used, and she puts her heart into every picture she takes. She quickly became a great friend in addition to being a great photographer. I'm only 13 but I've already told her she has to shoot my wedding someday because there is nobody else like her.

What has your modeling experience been like?

I've had the absolute best time posing for the camera. I've had the opportunity to do photo shoots in Dallas, TX, Park City, UT, Sevierville, TN and everywhere in between this year. The memories made are incredible. I’ve seen my face pop up online and in brochures. I have been so blessed to get to work with some of the best photographers around. I'm participating in my first pageant later this year where I'll try and win the title of Miss Cheerleader USA

What has been your favorite photo shoot or modeling experience so far?
My first photo shoot as a Rebel Model was one I'll never forget. I went Dallas to the Rebel Headquarters to shoot new release products. I met some of the best people on this shoot that I'm happy to call friends today. It was so fun seeing everything behind the scenes and also getting a sneak peek at the new product line.

Tell us about your acting life. What type of actress are you and what has been your favorite role?
My favorite role so far was a waterpark commercial. I spent 2 full days playing at the waterpark with my best friend! My biggest roles so far have been commercials but I've been invited to audition for some great roles in TV shows and movies. Some I had to pass on because of other commitments and others I just didn't get selected. The first rule my agent taught me is that if you're going to be successful then you have to learn to take rejection well. I've come so close on a few parts and was even selected for one to end up having my role removed from the shoot before production. They paid me anyway but I was still heartbroken lol. I'll keep trying and sooner or later I'll get the big part!

Picture
Photography by Shots by Sonja Sonja Wiseman

Tell us about your cheer career.
I started school Rec cheer at 6 years old and moved on to Allstar at age 7. I started on a prep level 1 team with Abilene Cheer Force in Texas and was most recently on a Sr 5 team at another gym. I'm on my 3rd year of middle school cheer presently. I'm also currently taking coed stunting privates with a college cheerleader. I've been fortunate enough to participate in some of the biggest cheer competitions in the nation and even won a few! I'm hoping now that I'm older I'll find my way to a gym where I'll gain the skills to be on a World's Teams someday.

What has been a favorite memory from cheer?
I've won a lot of metals, jackets and a highly coveted Cheersport Nationals Ring but honestly my favorite memory is from my last competition with Abilene Cheer Force. I was moving out of state so I thought I wouldn't see most of these people again. We didn't win that day but I left there knowing what friendship. teamwork and great coaching was all about. The love I was shown that day is something I'll never forget. Sometimes its about so much more than cheer!

How long have you ran track, what do you run and what has been a favorite accomplishment from track?
I ran track for a couple of year. I was pretty decent at it and was able to land a spot at the Elite Meet. Unfortunately, my cheer gym wouldn't allow me to miss cheer practice to attend. Looking back, I wish I had gone to that meet because it was so important to me. I plan to be on the track team again this year and am excited to have another opportunity to go to the big meet!

How would you describe your leadership style?
I do my best to lead by example. I encourage people to do their best and try to motivate.

What is a Rebel Model?
Rebel is an athletic and cheer clothing brand. I was chosen to be a part of Rebel Talent so I'm invited to do new product release photo shoots and to attend other fun events.

Why is this role important to you? Rebel makes the most beautiful cheer uniforms and practice wear out there. They also founded a movement called Rebel Against Bullying. The brand stands behind anti-bullying and inclusion. I'm proud to be a part of a company with such a powerful message.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I pride myself in the fact that I like to think outside the box. There is a whole world out there to explore and you are capable of accomplishing anything you set your mind to.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I’d like to encourage peers to be the best version of themselves they could be. I’ve seen so many times where everything is a competition and people forget there is room for everyone to shine. Taking something away from someone else doesn’t get you any farther. We should do a better job at encouraging our peers instead of trying to bring them for what they’ve accomplished.
Picture
Photography by Shots by Sonja Sonja Wiseman

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Learning how to do my full in tumbling has been a challenge! Every time I almost had it something happened and I regressed! Injuries, the gym being shut down due to Covid, mental blocks and everything else stood in my way but I was determined to learn this skill. I can finally throw my full. It's not pretty and still needs a lot of work but at least I've overcome the mental part! The rest will come with lots of practice.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I'd say you have to give 110% to anything you want to accomplish. Study hard, practice often and never give up! Don't ever wait for something to happen for you...make it happen for yourself!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I'll be graduating high school in 5 years hopefully at the top of my class! I'm still trying to figure out what college is my dream school. I plan to go into the engineering field and possibly continue cheering on into college. Right now finding the best academic fit is the most important part of selecting a college for me.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I absolutely love to travel! My favorite place I've visited so far is Paris. I love the history, the architecture, and the food! I found myself wanting to wander the streets where the locals are instead of staying at all the tourist spots.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
Well...I am pretty great with a Hula Hoop!

3 Things on your bucket list
Live in Paris for a year
Visit Greece
Land a movie role

Who do you find inspiring?
My favorite principal, Kayla Montgomery. She makes a difference in kids lives in a very unique way. She's been someone I could talk to this year when I had some especially hard things going on in my life.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think people see me as a determined and hard working person.
