What else should we know about you?
I love to spend a lot of my time doing volunteer work for different organizations. For over 2 years now, I have been working with an outreach program through my church where I spend time with little kids and families in an underprivileged area of Little Rock. I love getting to play with the kids and teach them more about God while doing so.

What is your favorite thing to do with the kids?
I really enjoy painting the little girls’ nails and playing football with the boys. I also love getting to teach them about the Lord and see them start to get to know God more and more.

What is a favorite memory from working with this outreach program?
I will always remember this one little girl named Myla who was there my very first-day volunteering. We quickly hit it off and became friends and she decided to give me her mom’s phone number so that she could reach me whenever she wanted. One day I was doing homework at my house, and I got a call from a random number and thankfully I decided to answer it. It was Myla calling to ask what I was doing and to tell me that she missed me so much. This made me realize just how important I was to these little kids because they saw me as a best friend and someone that would always take care of them.

What was your portrait experience like with Photography by Melisa and what was one thing you'll always remember from it?
My experiences with Melisa have always been wonderful. She is a kind, hard-working, and very talented photographer. I will always remember this photoshoot with my guitar because my friends and I thought it was so funny when everyone would be watching me while I was pretending to play for everyone.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very dedicated to my schoolwork and I maintain a GPA above 4.0 every year. I take multiple AP classes, including an honors foreign language class, and I have been inducted into the National Honors Society and the National Hispanic Honors Society at school.

Why is having such a strong work ethic so important to you?
My parents have always instilled in me the importance of education to be able to get a good job doing what I love when I am older to support my family and help those in need.

What has your favorite AP class been and why?
My favorite AP class has been AP Physics 1 because it is challenging to understand, but once you figure it out it is actually enjoyable. I also love my teacher in this class!

What honors foreign language are you taking, and do you have any plans to visit that country?
I am taking Honors Spanish 4 and I would love to visit a Spanish-speaking country one day and be able to communicate with the locals!

What do you do in the National Hispanic Honors Society?
I was recently inducted into it and I was called on-stage at the school ceremony to be awarded a certificate for my academic excellence in my previous Spanish classes.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I feel passionate about volunteer work, as previously stated in my nomination. It is something that I devote a lot of my time to, and I believe that all teenagers should be a part of at some point in their lives. It is extremely rewarding to directly see how you are impacting other people's lives that need it the most.

What tips do you have for teens interested in getting into volunteer work but aren't sure how to get started?
I would advise all teens to start local. If you are involved in a church, then ask your pastor or youth pastor if there are any outreach programs that you could be involved in. You could also start by signing up to volunteer at a nearby food bank or animal shelter. However, my most important piece of advice would be to find some kind of volunteer work that would allow you to work first-hand with people because there is nothing better than the rewarding feeling of directly seeing who you are helping and how it improves their lives.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I would say teaching myself to play guitar was very challenging and I accomplished it by frequent practice and watching YouTube videos to learn.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to always give your best effort in school because it really pays off in the end and to find a group of friends that will always have your back and support you through thick and thin.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
As of right now, I see myself going into the medical field and attending the University of Arkansas.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love to go shopping with my mom and my friends!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I can wakeboard, waterski, and wake surf on the lake.

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to go to Bora Bora and stay in one of the huts on the water, visit Santorini, Greece, and swim with dolphins.

Who do you find inspiring?
My mom inspires me because of her strong love for others and how willing she is to help anyone that needs it.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think that my dedication to volunteering could possibly inspire others to begin volunteer work too.

Share with us your decision to go into welding for a career? What have you created that you are most proud of? What does your future in this look like?
I chose to go into the welding field for a career because welders make a lot of money yearly and they always have different projects they work on. Something I have created while welding that I am most proud of is welding the structure of a boat dock from scratch at my job. My future in this career looks very well. I will always be learning new things and people will always need welders. There will never be a shortage of them.

Why hockey? What do love so much about it and what is a favorite accomplishment?
I have played hockey since I was in Kindergarten. I like playing it so much because I enjoy being a part of a team. I also really like skating fast across the ice and trying to score goals as much as I can.

Tell us about your drumming career from start to where you want to go.

My drumming career started at a young age. My dad was in a band and had practice at our house, which meant drums and other musical instruments were in my reach. I picked up some a pair of drumsticks and instantly fell in love with the instrument and groove. It started as me just playing around and playing along to songs, and someday I wish to be a touring musician.

How difficult was it to start your own band?
I live in a small town, so it was difficult to find 4 musicians in the area who all wanted to create the same music and be on a similar commitment level.
Picture
Photography by Sweet Life Photography

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from your musical career?
My favorite memory from my music career was when my band, Rage Under Age, played our first paid show at a venue in Lansing. We had tickets printed and sold them ourselves, packed the venue, had an amazing crowd, and played a great show. I will never forget the fun we had playing there and going out to eat afterwards with our earnings.

How are you working with bands from around the world?
To collaborate with other artists around the world we normally start off by connecting with one another on social media. From that point on, we choose the song we want to play and record the tracks of our instruments. We take a video of ourselves playing the song from our location, then share it with one another so we can edit and combine our videos. Our tracks are combined on the audio software creating one song. Throughout the video editing process, there are a lot of mixing and working on perfecting takes.

What are the talent shows and how did you find out about them?
Talent shows are normally hosted by schools or towns or other events. They are basically when several people put on a show and showcase whichever talent they have. My band and I have played many of them, along with the ones I have played before creating the band.

How are you creating and producing music content on social media platforms? What is your following like/your fans like?
I have been creating videos on YouTube (Madison Lockwood), posting images on Instagram to promote myself and my channel, making funny TikTok videos that would appeal to drummers and musicians while posting clips of my drumming content on there also. My fans and following are incredibly supportive of me. It's so crazy to engage with so many people that enjoy what I do. My following is mainly drummers and musicians, along with people who just enjoy the many genres of songs that I play (mainly hard rock). I can be found on YouTube as Madison Lockwood, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok as @madisonlockwoodYT

Maya Gonzales – Michigan
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Sweet Life Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Maya Gonzales had a vision for her life from an early age. She always knew her path in life would be an artist and musician. Maya has dedicating her life to her violin, piano, guitar, and artwork. She has been fortunate to travel the world playing her music and extremely fortunate to attend Interlochen Arts Academy. Her good fortune comes by having a passion, drive, and dedication to be the best artist she can possibly be. Her artistry is bigger than herself. She continually looks at how her artistry can affect change in her community and the lives of others.
Picture
Photography by Sweet Life Photography

Please share your music career with us. When did you start, which instrument is your favorite, and where and what you are practicing now?
I officially started my music career when I was about 6 years old, taking piano lessons. But even before then, I remember singing folk songs with my grandpa while he played guitar. While I have always been a classically trained musician, I owe my grandpa a great due of thanks for being one of the people that kept me motivated. After about 5 years of taking piano lessons, I started taking violin lessons as well. I played in my high school orchestra, my local symphony orchestra, and played in a string quartet at weddings. I also attended multiple camps from the ages of 12 to 16. My junior year I auditioned for Interlochen Art Academy, was accepted, and played violin in the academy symphony. In the midst of playing violin and piano, I learned ukelele, bass guitar and acoustic/electric guitar. Im now still studying at Interlochen Arts Academy, focusing on fashion, but trying to improve my guitar playing.

What is one of your favorite memories music has brought you?
Either travelling to Europe to tour with a youth symphony, or travelling to Miami with the Interlochen orchestra. In Europe I performed at beautiful churches and venues across France, Germany, and Luxembourg. In Miami we performed at The New Word Center for a sold out crowd of 700 people.

What type of artwork do you do?
I do all types of artwork, but some of my favorite mediums are charcoal, pencil, and oil/acrylic paint. I like to make conceptual artwork that is meaningful to me and to the people who see it. Conceptual art is nice because it depends on the viewer to determine the meaning behind it, and it can be different for everyone.

What types of fashion do you design and where do you get your inspiration?
Right now, I design mainly dresses and some shirts, but I am hoping to work my way up to other garments like jackets and suits. I get my inspiration from all over. It can be something as simple as seeing an outfit I like on Instagram and using that for inspiration. But it can also be a very deep and involving process where I find a theme to work with and base a garment off that. I also love looking in fashion magazines and seeing all of the new trends, I think my favorite magazine is ‘W’.

If you have a favorite, we'd love to see a picture of something you've designed and the details to go along with it.

The picture I submitted (above) is a dress that I just designed and built this semester. I got one of my friends to model the dress for me and I also shot the pictures.

Aden Black

10/29/2020

Picture

Aden Black - Missouri
Interview by Diamond Orin
Nomination and Photography by Ron Klein Photography
Issue 39  of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Aden Black: As a photographer, my most successful sessions usually result from working with a client who is willing to open her heart and soul to others. For anyone, but perhaps especially teenagers, revealing the truth of self can seem risky and a little scary, Aden is not only willing to reveal her truth, she actively seeks to share it with others.
As a musician, singer and songwriter, Aden writes and sings about the life she is living - both her joys and her struggles. She writes of love, but also rejection and heartbreak. Her music reminds others that they are not alone in their sometimes complex and messy feelings. She sings about the futility of comparing one's self to others and putting up with toxic relationships in order to feel connected. As she muscially charts her personal course through the struggles and successes of teen life, she inspires others with the knowledge that self-love and acceptance fortifies one with the strength to be fearless and the determination to love life fully.
Her willingness to expose her true self during our senior session inspired me to dig deeper into her story. I hope by calling attention to Aden and her music, her message will resonate as much with others, especially teens, as it did with me.

Tell us about your songwriting. How long have you been writing songs and how did you get started putting the songs to music?
I started writing songs when I was about fourteen years old. The first time I wrote a song, I was crying as I wrote the piece. Coming home after being rejected from the tv show The Voice, I was devastated. So I channeled my feelings into words about constantly feeling let down and told no for something I loved. Once I finished writing the song, I felt extremely better. So from then on, I’ve always found songwriting as a coping mechanism, and started to develop and get better with my technique to channel past emotions and develop my skills as a musician.

What is your favorite song you wrote and what is it about?
My favorite song that I’ve ever written is probably still the first song I wrote. It’s called “This” and for how young I was, I used some complex chords, and created a solid melody. However, the lyrics themselves are my favorite part. It’s about how for most of my middle school years, and for a solid chunk of my freshman year in high school, I was constantly haunted by my own demons due to bullying, growing pains, and struggling to fit in. It all became one large demon in my head that told me I was never good enough, that I wasn’t pretty enough, and that I’d never fit in. Yet, I had no word to call this feeling, so I called it this and wrote about how I just wanted this feeling gone. In simple words, I just wanted to feel proud of myself and happy for once. I think everyone has those moments when they’re extremely down on themselves, and they definitely don’t want to feel that way, so it's definitely a special song to me.

Picture
Photography by Ron Klein Photography

Where have you performed? What is your favorite part of performing?
I have performed in various stages in the country with a program called School of Rock and around my town St. Louis. I’ve performed at stages like The Ready Room, the Pageant, Delmar Hall, the Old Rock House, and more across the Midwest (Indiana, Cleveland, Chicago, etc.). Personally, my favorite part of performing is the crowd interaction. I love connecting with an audience and telling a story with the music I perform. I not only sing it, but really feel it and perform it with my whole body.

What was it like having a COVID graduation?
It was TERRIBLE! I’ve been an orchestra and choir kid my entire life. Every year at my school, the orchestra and choir perform. I’ve been able to play for three graduations, and yet I didn’t even get to perform at my own graduation! It felt like a tailgate, and though I was glad to get my diploma, it definitely was not how I expected after four years of hard work to finally receive it.

Picture

What is your biggest challenge with online college and how are you overcoming it?
My biggest challenge is socializing and playing music. I am a music major, specifically in performance. Though I am extremely happy to go to USC out in Los Angeles because it is my dream school, it's not exactly the best situation right now with everything being over Zoom. Zoom was definitely not designed for music classes, so I’m currently not enrolled in a performance class, and frankly that stinks. As for socializing, I find myself trapped in my room almost all day long doing schoolwork and Zoom classes. I have no friends in my hometown who aren’t at college right now except one, and it’s really hard. It’s very easy to sit back and get really depressed in this setting. However, I’m willing to do what it takes to go to college sooner. The key thing for me to overcome this is reaching out to people in my classes and trying to get to know them, hanging out with my friends that are also online for school right now, and staying in touch with my friends away from home.

What are other ways you could help people learn about mental health?
I think one way I could help spread awareness about mental health is talking about it. It is almost frowned upon for teens to discuss their mental health. Your Instagram profile needs to be picture perfect, yet that's not reality at all. This stigma is probably the biggest reason mental health in teens is getting progressively worse. Bringing awareness to it, talking about it, and giving people resources for help is the key way to help improve this stigma that mental health shouldn’t be talked about. The only way to overcome it is to talk about it!

Samantha Stafford

Samantha Stafford - Virginia
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination by Kylie Sandberg
Photography by Alisha Stafford (above)
Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Samantha Stafford is one of the most beautiful girls inside and out. She is continuously helping her friends and being an outstanding role model in her community. She volunteers so much of her time giving out food to the homeless. Samantha also is involved with her school heavily. She is a part of band and is such a talented oboe player. She was recognized for her oboe performance on a state level and has been awarded for her hard work multiple times! She is passionate about being a great student, and it shows by all the things she has accomplished such as being a part of multiple honor societies and other academic awards. She inspires me to always work hard and always be kind to everyone. She is the most deserving of this opportunity.
Picture
Photography by Moses Chung
We don't get many oboe players! Tell us more about why you picked that instrument, what you love about it, and any songs that you love to play and/or are most challenging for you.
I picked oboe honestly because I wanted to be better at something than my sister. We both played violin and piano and she was always better. When I picked up oboe I had finally found something that I was good at. I’m a person who tries to be different in certain aspects and try new things. Oboe is something I do not have in common with many of my other friends. I think the most challenging piece I have ever played was the Mozart Oboe Concerto in C Major because I struggled to portray his difficult yet beautiful style. All in all I love oboe and all the opportunities it has to offer!

What about classical music do you find so valuable and how has it impacted your life?
Classical music is in and of itself so beautiful. Though many others do not care or disagree with me, I find so much room to express emotion and feelings through music. I think being able to play anything in classical music give you the opportunity to be creative with what you are given! I used to hate classical music and practicing until I met one person in my high school life that changed my entire perspective of music. He told me one day I will end up majoring in oboe and he was right! I am blessed I was given amazing music instructors that have changed my perspective of classical music and taught me to love it.

How did you get started with volunteering and what are some of the volunteer services you have participated in?
I got started with volunteering through different churches VBS. I have always loved to sing and dance since I was a kid and so when I was asked to become praise and worship leader for a VBS camp I was ecstatic. I also feed the homeless down near Hampton, VA every month. We package food, clothing, and hygiene kits to pass out to the homeless. The absolute best part in this experience is seeing the amount of love being shared among us.

Picture
Photography by Jahnel Rae Bashford

Tell us more about a volunteer service that you participate in regularly or one that you have as a favorite.
Feeding the homeless is definitely one volunteering service I love. It takes up quite a bit of time in my morning and afternoons, but it is 100% worth it. Some individuals and families do not live a privileged life like a lot of us are. My favorite part about this volunteer service is getting to see this one family. I love picking out clothing and toys for the kids to enjoy! Being able to grow connections and bonds with these homeless people is another one of my favorite parts. Knowing that I can at least give a little to these people brings me so much joy and contentment.

Picture

Tell us about your role in your honor societies. What are they and what do you do in them?
I am in the National Honor Society, English Honor Society, and Tri-M which is the music honor society. Most of these involve community service projects as one would expect. For some reason I love English which is why I chose to apply for that honor society. In that honor society we listen to lectures about different novels that are prevalent in our culture or society these days. It makes lectures even better knowing our English departments passion for literature!

4 years.

What has working with children and people of special needs taught you?
We all have a purpose. Success is measured differently for all people; we all have different abilities and celebrating our own level of accomplishments is amazing. Despite how society measures their abilities these kids are so happy and completely unphased by the opinions of others. We should all strive to live a life so focused on loving each other that we do not let the world distract us.

Picture
Photography by Amanda Hitchen Photography

How did you find your passion for musical therapy? What made you want to pursue it as a future career?
For as long as I can remember I have loved music; I play guitar and sing. Even as a young child I had an exceptional amount of love for children with disabilities as well as elderly that need extra care. My first summer at Little Light House I discovered that I could use my gifting of music and my love for children with special needs to help them learn and grown. It just all made perfect sense.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I want to encourage other teens to find what excites them and seek God for their calling. God places a calling on each of our lives and it is up to us to discover that calling and use it for His glory! Don’t try to copy someone else. We were all created unique with our own specific gifts. Nothing gives more joy, happiness, and confidence than living out God's plan for your life. Quit chasing popularity, life isn’t a contest about who is better. Life is truly about living your own calling.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
My plans are to attend Oral Roberts University. I would be a senior in college majoring in Musical Therapy. Working at the ORU Musical Therapy Clinic taking the final steps toward my degree and future career. Maybe I’ve found my person and will be engaged, planning a wedding

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I am on the Varsity Golf Team. Not sure anyone really loves golf, but I do enjoy spending a beautiful day on the course and competing against myself to get better.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Being confident in your uniqueness. Quit trying to impress everyone and consuming yourself with the opinions of others. Be the weird girl, the shy guy, the funny kid, the smart kid. Be athletic or musical. Just be You!

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I’m an only child with sibling pets; two Bulldogs, and one cat.
A member of National Honor Society
I serve in Champions Club at my church. A program for children with special needs
I am on the worship team at school where I lead worship and play the guitar

Tell me more about how you got involved with cheer and tennis!
I’ve been cheering since age 6. I began with competitive all star cheer which continued through fifth grade. By 6th grade, I was ready for school sideline and competition cheer. I have been a cheerleader ever since. My high school team placed second in the nation at the 2020 UCA Cheerleading National Championship. It was a dream competition season for Niceville Cheerleading. I felt honored to be a part of it.

My love of tennis began at a very young age. My parents both play tennis so they passed on their love for the sport to my younger brother and I. I began lessons at age 6. I trained during the elementary years to play on the middle school team all three years and then on to play for the high school varsity team all four years. It is a great honor for me to play on the Niceville High School team. Niceville Tennis has quite the reputation for excellence. I am proud to be a part of the program. Before Covid hit this year, we were on our way to a dream tennis season. We were undefeated and had broken several district records. It all came to an abrupt halt. We did not return to school after spring break so like many schools all over the country, spring sports were cancelled. It was disappointing but if anything we are stronger for it.

Picture
Photography by Erin Hansen Photography

What do you love about playing those two sports?
As a cheerleader, I love that I can help be an ambassador in the community for the school I love. We hold clinics for younger girls interested in cheer. We also serve in the community at various charity and local events. Representing my school is an honor. I also love being on the sidelines cheering for my favorite team the EAGLES! There is an excitement in the stadium on game day, the energy of the crowd, the amazing Eagle Pride Band and the superior athletes who perform each week are just a few of the many parts that make cheering such an incredible experience. There is just nothing like Friday Night Lights in Niceville!
As a tennis player, the best part about tennis is being part of a team. Being gracious under pressure, maintaining concentration, being disciplined to train hard and learning from your mistakes are the biggest lessons I will always hold dear from the game of tennis. My best friend Callie and I are doubles partners. We rely on each other to make points happen. We fight for the point together. I’m lucky to have been able to play with her all these years of team tennis. Playing the game I love with my best friend is incredible. Tennis is also a game you keep forever. Once you know how to play, you can keep on playing.

Tell me more about your music! How long have you been playing and why do you like playing so much?
Piano has been a part of my life since the age of 6 and I have been taking lessons ever since. There is nothing quite like the feeling of bringing a song to life on the piano keys. The time and effort necessary is all worth it once a song is perfected. I love sharing the gift of music with others, as music has the capacity to lift spirits, invite peace, share love, bring joy, and change lives.

What different volunteer projects have you been a part of and which has been your favorite so far?

As a member of the Student Ministry of Crosspoint Church I have been able to serve my community in many ways. Each year the church hosts what is called “Mission Northwest.” We leave our families for a week to go out in our local community and help those in need. Some of the projects have included: demolition and rebuild of a women’s and children’s shelter, hosting a prom for special needs students, building a new playground in a local neighborhood, serving as mentors to foster teenagers, working at our church Bargain Box organizing donated items clothes, toys, etc. The first year I participated in Mission Northwest, my group was involved in a project titled CALM House construction. The house was going to be a shelter for single mothers and their children. Even though we had to get our hands dirty, from taking out insulation, to painting, removing carpet, laying new flooring and more...it was all worth it, just to know what special moments those buildings would hold in the near future. To be a small part of the beginning of the CALM House journey, is something I will never forget, as this would go on to show light to many in need of love and support. I also served as a mentor to foster care teens. My week with these young women was truly a blessing to me. I got to listen to them, serve as a confidant, encourage them, and just spend quality time getting to know them. We did art projects, took them for a little pampering session, went canoeing together and for a few moments reminded each of them what it was like to just enjoy life. I was honored to have been asked to be part of this ministry.

Tell me more about "Supper on Saturday" what is this organization? How did you get involved and what do you do with them?
“Supper on Saturday” is an outreach program put together by Crosspoint Church in Niceville. I actually got involved through the Key Club at Niceville High School, which is a service based organization. Volunteers get together to prepare and deliver meals to families and to elderly in need in our community. It is so heart warming to be a part of bringing joy to others. Seeing the smile on people’s faces and knowing that I had a small part in making their day a little brighter is a feeling like no other. It’s the simple things like providing a few encouraging words for them, or sharing a warm smile, that make the biggest difference. I would love to see more communities take on a project to serve people in need. I promise, the good will escalate.

How do you stay balanced between sports, clubs and volunteering while maintaining a 4.6!

I make mental checklists almost every day of the tasks that I need to complete. I’ll often bring these to existence on a notecard, and I make sure I put it in a place where I constantly see it, like my desk. No matter what the task is, I try my best to be 100% present and devote my full attention to it. I find that that is when I get my best work done, when I focus on the task at hand, rather than worrying about the other tasks I need to do.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Set high standards for yourself. Know that the small decisions you make every day to work hard, be kind, and be involved, are worth the investment because they will set you up for success. Failure isn’t something to fear. It gives us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and become stronger than ever. Be faithful and thankful in all circumstances. Look for the good, even if it’s hard to find.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I would love to be finishing my first year of medical school. I’m interested in being a scientist. I would love for something I do or create to help someone else.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I have several. I love to read! I enjoy spending time with the people I love, walks on the beach, 80’s music, playing with my two goldendoodles Brody and Wrigley, sunsets, and creating personalized greeting cards for all the special people in my life.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Erin Napier inspiring. She and her husband Ben are the host of HGTV’s Hometown. On TV, Erin shows such intentionality and kindness to everyone she meets. She makes a personal home painting for each family that moves in to their new home, which I believe is so thoughtful, and makes her show a little different. I feel that if I were to meet Erin in person, she would show me the same qualities of intentionality and kindness that she does on the show. Her genuineness is inspiring to me, because although she is on television, she carries herself just as she would away from the camera.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Well no matter what, I am always positive. I find the good in everyone and everything around me. I work hard and do my best on everything I am part of. I share kindness and respect with everyone around me.

Coming from a small town, many have told her she is crazy for even thinking of this dream but she is determined to move those mountains and audition for American Idol, The Voice, and America's Got Talent. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University after she graduates.

What inspired your passion for singing, and what locations have you performed at? Which was the most memorable for you?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have been singing and performing everywhere! Whether it be in the shower or in front of 8,000 people, I am constantly singing and pushing for my dreams to become a reality. I have had many opportunities to sing the National Anthem at places like OYE, Alumni camp, high school sporting events and even at the Farm Bureau Convention. One of my most memorable performances was the first time I performed in the talent show on a stage in front of 8,000 people when I went to my first FFA State Convention. I walked off the stage and told my mom that I wanted to sing professionally some day!

Tell me about your love for public speaking and acting that has led you to perform in musicals growing up, as well as your passion for FFA and being actively involved in your school.
Public speaking was a great resource when it comes to developing my acting skills. Acting has always held a special place in my heart and I have always said that “if I don’t pursue my singing dreams, then I hope to be seen on the big screen someday!” FFA has given me the opportunity to grow as a leader and it has helped open my eyes to all the possibilities of becoming a performer!

What were your experiences like being an extra in two Christian movies, and what was the process like?
The first experience in “I Can Only Imagine,” was by far my favorite! I was in the concert scene and it was filmed in Oklahoma City, OK. We were there for hours, filming the same scene over and over. I loved watching the actors do their part, it was like I had a front row seat. It was so fun going to the movies and watching myself on the big screen. The second movie was a great experience, too! I love acting and being in front of the camera, as you can tell!

How has your faith impacted your passions as well as your life and who you are as a person?
God has truly blessed me with my talents that I withhold today! I truly believe that I can bring people to God through my singing and feel it is my purpose to share the word through my voice. I am part of the worship team at Faith church in Glenpool, OK. I have learned so much about singing with a band and working together and sharing our love for Christ through music. I truly feel like God has blessed me with this voice to share with the world.

What goals do you have for your future whether it be through singing and performing or your plan to attend Oklahoma State University?
I intend to audition for American Idol and America’s Got Talent in the near future! My major may be uncertain but I am looking into Broadcasting or Public Relations. I also would like to minor in Theater so I can get some more experience with that at a higher level.

What advice would you give to teens who are passionate about performing arts to pursue it no matter what others say, just like you have through your story?
I encourage you to follow your dreams and that you listen to Katy Perry’s song “Daisies,” because it relates to all the dreamers in this world. I have had many people tell me that my dreams are impossible and that I will never make it! What they don’t know is they light that fire even more under me and they make me want to move those mountains even more. Never give up, you are going to have people tell you “no,” but keep going until you hear a “yes!” You are a survivor! Keep your head up and keep on working for your dreams and don’t let anything or anyone get in your way!

When did you find your passion for music? Are there any musicians you look up to?

It was not until my sixth grade year that I truly turned my attention towards performing arts. I was never interested in electives such as visual arts or culinary arts. Therefore, I enrolled in band. I auditioned for instruments such as the saxophone and percussion. Though they simply did not feel right. Losing a bit of hope, I tried the trumpet. After letting out a strong “buzz” I was told almost instantly that I was a trumpet. I was lucky to be taught by many musicians, Mr. Bobby Joe De Leon Jr. is someone I will always look up to.

What is it like getting to mentor your peers in music and being someone they look up to?
I have been mentoring for three years and created solid relationships. It is very rewarding to be mentoring my peers through music, owing to the fact that seeing how they accepted my help advanced their technique and performance etiquette. To know that I was their guide towards success makes me feel good. There were many gratifying moments that boosted my confidence in continuing my mentor position. Many made it to All-Region and gained a superior rating on their solo’s. Catching sight of how much my section members developed from the beginning of the season to the end was beyond fulfilling.

Tell me more about the Mariachi club you started and what it is like being a part of the San Antonio Mariachi Academy!
When I joined San Antonio Mariachi Academy I was very nervous. Although, I was welcomed right away by the individuals of this organization. Being in this friendly environment strengthened my qualities of discipline, accountability, and teamwork. Giving me the inspiration of establishing a club my junior year. After successfully finding enough interested members, “Los Halcones de Harlan” came to be. The club consists of members of the band program, orchestra program, and other individuals who know how to play stringed instruments. This club is intended for individuals to have the opportunity to learn a different type of musical culture and literature.

Tell me more about your culture! What do you love so much about it and what are some traditions you have?
I love everything about my Mexican culture. From our music, parties and dancing- to our family, clothing and food. From a young age I was taught to adore my culture and all that it has to offer. I spent my youth attending celebrations such as quinceañeras and since I excelled in my academic studies I had the opportunity to have one of my own! One of my yearly traditions is to travel to Mexico, I’ve traveled to many of its states. My fondest memory was when I traveled to Guadalajara, Jalisco; home of the mariachis, to sing with professional mariachis.

What are some goals you have for your future? Do you want to continue playing music and maybe play professionally?
There are many goals I have for my future. To name some; I want to become the first college graduate in my family, to have a degree in music, and to become a doctor. Music will always be my passion and I want to continue playing it, I dream of having the opportunity to someday play professionally.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished was taking the stage in Mariachi Region. I was challenged by getting on stage in front of a huge crowd and singing a song that I learned in less than twenty four hours! Although I was anxious I knew that the show had to go on.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Never give up and always get back up after you have failed. Never take no for an answer.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I see myself in medical school pursuing a doctoral degree in medicine.

Picture

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
When I’m not playing my trumpet or singing my favorite thing to do is community service, I am always willing to give a helping hand.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
My key to organization is prioritizing the things I find most important and not procrastinate.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list include traveling the world, going skydiving, and taking a hot air balloon ride.

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents very inspiring because no matter what life throws at them, they find a way to get to the positive side of things.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I believe that my amount of confidence in all that I do inspires people to follow my path. I try my absolute best to fear nothing and no one, it helps me reach my goals.

The Nomination: Emelie Gast is a very engaged and motivated teen in different areas. Since she was a girl she started to sing and to play the piano. She was a member of the best choir of Germany in 2017 and she had several concerts every year. Beside this she likes to attend in the plays and musicals. Every part she did in the past was outstanding and with so much enthusiasm and engagement. While she was an exchange student in Aberdeen 2019/20 she passed the audition for the Show Choir, Acappella Choir, Fall Play, One-Act-Play and Spring Musical. Because of her attitude, her motivation and her positive personality she was awarded as student of the month in November 2019 from Forte International.
At the beginning of 2019 she was selected as president of our national student parliament. She had to lead the discussion and did some statements to the television. How did you get involved in choir? Tell me more about what being in these choral groups is like?
Since I was little, I really enjoyed singing and listening to music. Every year the choir holds a Christmas concert, which my family and I have attended each year since I can remember. I was about 8 years old when I finally joined this choir. It is just a nice feeling to be involved in a group where everyone has the same interests as you.
The team spirits in this group was unbelievable. We stick together and help each other.
We won so many competitions traveling all over Europe.
In 2017 we won the German-choir competition with the title best choir in Germany.
For me it was very important to have the opportunity to sing in a choir during my exchange year. I am so glad that I joined A-cappella and show choir. I have learned and saw so much.

What has been your favorite concert or musical you have performed in? Why?
My favorite musical has been Clue. It was a one-act play based on the board game, Clue. I performed it along with classmates at my U.S high school this past February. I played the part of a maid and one of the body-major. We traveled to Sioux Falls, SD on a 3-day journey and performed our musical for a competition. We also saw many other one act. Our group got a Superior rating.

What inspired you to want to do an exchange year abroad? Why?
My dream has always being able to travel and see the world. I have always been fascinated with learning how the American school system works; the lifestyles of the people and what their food tasted like. A few years ago, my sister Lisa did a semester abroad in San Diego. She talked about her fantastic semester and that she learned a lot. I wanted to do that as well. But I didn’t want to wait until college, I wanted to do it as fast as possible. It was my dream. I’ve worked, and studied a lot to live my dream and I would do it every day again.

What is your favorite moment from your exchange year? Why?
I had so many beautiful and amazing moments. One of my favorites is the day that I actually arrived and met my host family in person. I was excited and nervous to embark on this amazing journey. I had waited 7 months for this moment; and there it was, and my dream was coming true. It was just an unbelievable moment in my life.

I know you were elected as the President of your National Student Parliament, tell me more about this, what does this job involve?
My task was to open the Plenary session and to keep everything under control.
It was up to me to say who had the floor and was allowed to speak next. Another task was, that I had to announce the various votes and also check the results.
At the end, the results of the votes were repeated and recorded.
Giving a speech in front of the Parliament as well as the following interviews on television were very exciting and educative.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice to other teenager would be to believe in yourself. Be brave try new things and don’t give up. Fight for your dreams and always strive to be a better version of yourself every day!

The Nomination: Isaiah Martin personifies the word inspirational! He has been active in many activities including President Student Council President at his Vo-Tech, FCA, FBLA, Skills-USA, Health Careers Club and band.
Outside of school, he’s a drummer for the worship team, helps at the monthly food drive, works with the church mission team and at MISSION:IMPACT each summer to inspire other teens to serve.

Isaiah is a hardworking, dependable and a blessing to everyone he meets and a great inspiration!

What inspired you to get so involved in your church and have such strong faith?
I've been in church all my life but the reason why I'm so involved in church and have faith is because I love God.

Now I know that you are a drummer in your worship team, how long ago did you start drumming, and what does being in the worship team involve?
I started drumming when I was 14. Being a part of the worship team involves staying at a constant level of being humble. Give glory to God before we try and take the glory for ourselves.

Picture
Photography by Light of the World Photography

When you work with the church mission team and at MISSION:IMPACT what do you do there?
During our mission camps I am part of our camp worship team and I'm a team leader. "Tropical Ninjas!" Also, my teams really did more of the grunt work because it was an all-male team.

What influenced you to complete the CNA program and start working at your local hospital?
My teacher Mrs. Sam is the biggest part of this. She worked on this apprenticeship three years and I was very blessed to be the first to do it. She pushed me all the way to the finish line.

What does work at the hospital involve? What jobs do you do there when you volunteer?

The hospital involves a list that I don't know if I can type it all out. As a CNA I help the nurses do anything they need me to do, I chart how much people eat, drink, and use the restroom. I also lift, move, and clean patients as need be to help prevent pressure ulcers.

How did you become interested in music?
Ever since I was younger, I have always had a strong liking for music. I would always sing in the car with my parents, and I would beat on the closest thing around me like a drum. It is kind of difficult to say exactly, but I know it has always been around me for as long as I can remember.

What were some ways you taught yourself how to play guitar? YouTube videos? Books? Or did it just come naturally to you?
When I first wanted to start learning guitar, I asked my buddy for help. He showed me a couple of guitar chords and I was on my way. I would come home from school every day to try to learn more guitar chords. I went to YouTube and searched for the most basic guitar chords; I would constantly practice those chords until I got them down pretty well. I have been playing guitar for about two years now, I am constantly picking up new techniques and learning songs to help me become a better guitar player.

Picture

Tell us a little bit about what you are involved in at your high school.
I am involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, PNG Indians Give, and band. In band, I have been on the drum line since my freshman year. I started out playing the bass drum and then I played snare drum the following year, for the past two years I have been playing the tenor drums, also known as the quads. I have also been a section leader for the past two years, and this year I was selected to be Vice President of the band.

Please tell us about the local rock band you are in called Klozure.
In my band Klozure, I sing lead vocals and play rhythm guitar, Shelby Balsano plays bass guitar, Hayden Snider is the drummer and Benton Nesmith is our newest guitarist. After tons of practice, we really played well together, and we started learning covers. After a while we started to write our own music and we have successfully completed one full song named Emerge. We still have to record the song and mix and master it before we release it to the public. We are constantly coming up with new ideas for songs and we plan to learn a lot of covers, so we can get various gigs.

People tend to rely on me for advice because I am trustworthy and I give honest advice. I always do my best to help the people who ask for help, and to hopefully help anyone else around me.

What makes a good leader?
A good leader to me is someone who is willing to put themselves before others, always early to every event and offers to help in any situation. A good leader is a hard worker and a person people look to for advice. I do my best to follow these qualities and to set the example for the people around me.

Cash Lane - California
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination & Photography by Nicole Lane
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: At the tender age of 13, Cash Lane is already living his best life. Having graced the stages of some iconic places such as The Viper Room and The Rainbow on Hollywood’s Sunset strip, sitting in with adult, touring musicians, all while holding his own on his bass guitar. His band, Youthanize, was recently complemented and scouted by America’s  Got Talent. Having played shows with an audience full of the music industry’s heavy hitters is enough to leave any seasoned adult player feeling envious. Cash is just getting started and we can’t wait to see what his future holds!
Picture

What do you love most about music, and what is your favorite instrument to play?

The famous quote, “where words fail, music speaks” really resonates with me. Music is a way for me to express myself. Happy or sad, there’s always a song that will reflect my mood. I play drums and bass guitar, but bass is my instrument of choice.

Tell me about your band Youthanize and the opportunities you have received like playing in The Viper Room on Hollywood’s Sunset strip.
Youthanize is a band from ages 10-14 years old. We play rock and roll covers. We are mentored by my dad, Corey Lane and our keyboard player’s dad, Jason Freese. They are both in the music industry and through them, we have had some amazing opportunities. Sometimes they help us get our foot in the door, but our playing has to speak for itself. Getting to play on the Sunset strip was definitely on my bucket list. Getting to do it multiple times has been really cool.

What has been your favorite memory of being a part of your band so far, and how has music opened the door for new experiences in your life?
I have so many great memories from being a part of my band. We all get along so well, and we will definitely be friends for a very long time as we navigate this business.
I’d have to say that my favorite show was getting to play with a band called Rothchild. It’s a project that Brooks Wackerman (drummer for Avenged Sevenfold) put together with some of the guys from Tenacious D. There were so many amazingly talented musicians in the audience that night. I felt extremely fortunate that I had that opportunity at only 13 yrs old. As for new experiences, one show just seems to lead to another.
Picture
Can you tell me about the importance of work ethic that’s come into play through your music experience so far, and what it has taught you from being hired by places that are adult establishments?
Work ethic is something I learned early on. Why would they hire a kid to play if it comes with headaches when they can just hire an adult? I show up early, ready to perform. I do my job. I know it’s not time to play around.

How has your passion for music encouraged you to stay true to yourself throughout your life?
Music is something I’ve been around since day one. Throughout elementary school, most of my peers were into sports. I gave it a try. It definitely was NOT my thing. While most of my friends were at baseball practice, I was in music lessons. Friends would come over and the first thing they wanted to do was bang on my drums. It taught me that it was cool to be different. Now, I realize I want to stand out and not blend in.

Picture

What advice would you give to other teens that would help encourage them to continue to pursue their dreams even if they stand out amongst the rest?
I would tell them something great always comes out of doing what you love. When you stand out or are different, it helps people remember you. You leave a mark and that’s a good thing.
If someone really wants something, I’d tell them to not give up. Practice, practice and practice some more. When you’re ready, find others with your same goals, and start jamming with them. But most importantly, never stop learning.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I hope to be a bass player who’s a true contender in the game. My dream would be to play music full time. I would love to be able to have my bass guitar take me around the world.

She also plays the clarinet, piano, and mandolin. If she is not singing or playing, Eva is drawing- on anything and everything. A gifted visual artist, Eva has won several state and national competitions with her unique artwork. All these talents are wonderful, but the best thing about Eva is her zeal for life. She happily shares her art with anyone, whether helping her three sisters with art projects, teaching beginning violinists, or tromping through the woods reciting poetry and filming movies. A true artist in spirit and talent, Eva inspires beauty and love for life to all around her.

Tell us about your interests in music and art.
Music has been a part of me since I began violin lessons at 6 and a part of my family since my grandfather started a band in the 70s. I received musical training from family members as well as professional teachers. I was once told that “a musician must hear; an artist must see.” However, I would add that it's not enough to listen to lilting melodies or see beautiful landscapes, a musician must become a part of the notes with their instrument; an artist must become a part of the landscape through their art. Music and art are beautiful because they are skills that I can carry with me through my entire life.

What do you think music and art can do for a person?
I am in a 40s acapella band, and every time we sing for our audiences, primarily senior citizens and veterans, the power of music becomes most evident to me. My favorite memory is singing in a nursing home when a man in a wheelchair stood up and began dancing with me. He stayed after the performance to tell us his story of swing dancing. It was incredible. Bringing joyfulness, sorrowful memories, and hopeful tears to faces that hear it, music affects every person. Music holds a universal bond and language with people that requires no words. Everyone understands. Music has the ability to change people, bring hope or sadness, and unite people around the world. It is powerful, and we can be part of it.

When you began to dislike practicing, how did you train your mind to get back on track?
Practicing will always be a struggle for me. However, I realized that the struggle is what makes it a greater accomplishment when you complete the task. Without challenges, there would be no growth. So, although the struggle may never fully leave, pushing yourself to practice becomes easier when you understand the reward. Don’t give up. It will be difficult, but the difficulties are what create breakthroughs. Find something that inspires you and keep going!

What do you plan on doing with music and art in the future?
After graduating college with a degree in violin and art, I hope to bring what I've learned back to Alabama and start a Fine Arts studio dedicated to excellence and devoted to students. I want to create a place for students to follow the arts as a career while thriving and learning at professional levels. I believe that giving children the opportunity to excel in the arts will be beneficial to the generation ahead and the state of Alabama.

If you could describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be and why?
I describe myself as competitive, creative, and content. I like to win, and I feel like the pieces of music I play or the pictures I draw are challenges to overcome. Creativity has always been in my life. I think it's interesting to see how far one can go to portray an idea or theme with art. Contentment comes from realizing how much God gives me: family, friends, and opportunities. I know that God will continue leading me through life, and I am excited to follow what he has in store for my future.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love playing basketball, especially with my sister and dad. I also love reading and writing poetry.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I sell customized shoes when I have time to spend painting at home. I love painting Air force 1s!

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to have a piece of poetry published, start a small side business for customizing shoes, and learn how to swing dance more.

Who do you find inspiring?
Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, both of my grandparents, and my Aunt Julie

Isabelle Fortiz -Virginia
Interview by Zoe D'Angelo
Nomination by Rachel Fortiz
Photography by Melissa Waller Photography
Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Isabelle Fortiz is an IB student and is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. She is a peer tutor in math and chemistry. She was on the Varsity swim team all 4 years of high school and was voted captain her senior year. Isabelle also plays the violin and has performed with the Rappahanock Youth Symphony Orchestra and for her high school’s Chamber Symphonia. Isabelle has certifications in American Red Cross, lifeguarding, and Water Safety Instruction. She is currently a junior assistant coach for the Rappahanock Area Stingrays.

Tell us about your experiences swimming. Where did you swim before high school?

I started swim lessons through Stafford County when I was 4 years old, where I developed a love for being in the water. I was introduced to meets and teamwork while swimming for a summer swim team, the Aquia Harbor Dolphins, from ages 9 to 12. When I was 12, I also decided to start swimming year-round with STAT to gain experience swimming in a more competitive environment. The following year, I joined the Massad Marlins for summer swim and switched to the Stingrays for year-round swimming. I swam with the Marlins for 3 years, until joining the Hampton Oaks Hurricanes, where I currently swim and coach. I continued swimming with the Rays for 4 years until deciding that coaching was my passion.

What is something not everyone knows about swimming?
Something that not everyone knows about swimming is that it is very much a mental exercise as much as it is physical. Swimming requires a great amount of physical strength and endurance while using many different muscles. However, I find myself testing my mental toughness in long, grueling practices and while pushing myself to be my best during practices. I think it’s especially noticeable during meets and races. We’re all very dedicated to this sport, putting in the hours and the laps needed to reach our goals, so it becomes a matter of how hard and far we’re willing to push ourselves.

What was it like transitioning from a swimmer to a swim coach? How is it different being on the "other" side? -> (The coaching side)
Ending junior year, I decided that swimming in college was not something that I saw myself doing in my future. I realized that I didn’t want to step away from the pool completely, so I reached out to my Rays coaches about coaching the developmental group (10&U). The transition from swimmer to swim coach was simple because I started coaching at the start of the following season and I am still close with my teammates and coaches. As a coach, I have a greater appreciation for my coaches, teachers, and mentors, as well as a better understanding of the work they put in for my peers and I.

Tell us about your own service project, The Big Box Project. What is it? How did it start? What are you hoping to accomplish with it?
I created The Big Box Project in December 2018 to collect toiletries and non-perishable food donations to donate to Empowerhouse, a shelter for survivors of domestic violence and abuse located in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The project was designed to run for exactly one month as part of my Creativity-Action-Service “CAS” Project as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. I wanted to combine my swim, school, and social community to help give back to those in need

Picture
Photography by Rachel Fortiz
What does it mean to inspire others? How are you able to do that?
To inspire others means to positively influence by setting an example of how to be motivated to work for a goal or to achieve something by having a strong work ethic. Beyond swimming, I am a full IB Diploma Programme student and a violinist in my school’s higher-level Chamber Sinfonia orchestra. I am a part of a senior class that showed the underclassmen that it was possible to do extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports as an IB student, as I will be graduating in the top 10% of my class.

What are your plans for college, and why did you chose to take this path?
After looking, applying, and receiving acceptance letters from several colleges, I noticed one thing that seemed outrageous to me: the price. Even with the scholarships the schools were offering me, I still found the tuition to be overpriced. I did some research and realized that there is another option. A community college about twenty-five minutes away from my house offers an accelerated program called the ASAP program. This offers students to get an associate’s degree in less than a year for a much more affordable price. One of my biggest goals in life is to make as much money as fast as possible, so with this I will be finishing faster than most people in my grade and be spending less. Overall, it pertains to my goals in life better. After finishing this program, I’ll then transfer to a state university to only work on my major and minor, so all of my prerequisites will be finished and I won’t be required to stay on campus and pay into other unnecessary fees.

What inspired you to major in telecommunications and marketing?
What inspired me to major in telecommunications is actually a class I am taking in high school right now. The class is called radio and tv, but our group is called Rewind. We produce newscasts and create short films there. I developed a love for working a camera and for editing. It was then I realized, “This is what I want to do for a living”. There are many different pieces of telecommunications like journalism (news) or film (movies), but when I did research, I found the best way to make money in this career is by doing some marketing with it which would be making commercials. That’s why I chose marketing to be my minor.

Picture

What is your favorite part of REWIND and getting to make films and newscasts?
As I mentioned, Rewind is where I found my passion, but my favorite part of the class itself I would say is getting to learn new things with different projects and different editing styles. On March 9, our class went to our Indiana State Broadcasters Association contest where several of the class' works were submitted. A friend of mine and I earned second in the copywriting category and our class as a whole placed second as being Indiana’s TV School of the Year.

I know you have been a member of Mbassadors for 3 years, what does that involve?
Mbassadors is our school’s concert choir. I have been in choir for 7 years this year. Mbassadors is the highest concert choir one can be in at our school. I joined as a sophomore, so this is my third year in the choir. We practice during the day and when we’re preparing to go to our State Qualifications contest, we also practice outside of school.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone that is in a family situation similar to yours?
I would just tell people that the situation gets easier and you learn to adapt. It teaches you great life lessons like learning how to forgive and taking unfortunate situations and growing from them. You just can’t look back; you have to keep moving forward and figure out how to change a bad situation into a learning opportunity.

Heather Robinson - Maryland
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Heather Soskin Photography
Issue 31 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: I nominate Heather as an inspiring teen for SO many reasons. Not only is she a kind young lady but she is also fun and has a great head on her shoulders. She is an amazing soccer player on her high school varsity team and also runs varsity track as well. In addition to sports, she is also in National Honors Society and involved in her high school Girl Up Club, Chesapeake Bay Coalition and Hero Club. All of this during the school year and working as a summer camp counselor. She is an exceptional student at a top-rated public magnet high school and will be graduating from the Global Ecology program this coming spring. She has been accepted to University of MD, PITT, PENN State, UNC Charlotte and Virginia Tech so far and will be studying Pre-Law. Quite a role model and leader at the young age of 18!
Picture
Photo one was a photo taken by the photographer who nominated me, Heather Soskin. This photo showcases my love for soccer, and the uniform I'm pictured in is from my Varsity High School team.

Tell us about your interest in entertainment law.

I’ve loved and admired the entertainment industry for as long as I can remember. I’m fascinated by music and acting, and I have always known that I've wanted a career in the industry. I’ve contemplated different branches in the business from producing to acting, and as much I’d still love to engage in one of those roles, I foresee myself making the most tangible impact as an entertainment lawyer. I’d be working diligently to help construct indisputable contracts for rising artists who are often vulnerable to the pressures of the industry.

One of your goals is to one day have an immense impact on the world. How are you planning on meeting that goal?
With the following I could potentially gain, I'd love to use my platform to raise awareness for problems that matter to me - environmental awareness and gender equality. With the knowledge of law I would acquire, I could use my expertise in lobbying for legislation and regulations regarding these issues.

Picture
Photo 2 was a photo that my mother, Lesly Baugh-Robinson took of some of my best friends and me on one of the spirit days at the beginning of the school year. This photo gives insight into who I am because my friends mean a lot to me. I think it is important to have people in your life that you know you can trust and will always have your back no matter what the situation is. I'm lucky that these are who those girls are for me.

Tell us a little bit about your life and how you have beaten the odds.
Throughout my life, due to my congenital illness, I was always expected to excuse myself from rigorous activities. However, at a very young age, my parents instilled in me the value of perseverance. They taught me that I can’t let my illness hold me back from doing what I want. Keeping this in mind, I found ways around it, learning to adapt to the world around me. Whenever I experienced symptoms, I learned how to manage them, and it taught me to effectively communicate with my teachers and peers when I did need help. I was able to learn very early on what hard work was and what it meant to truly use determination to drive you to beat the odds.
Picture
Photo 3 is of me and some of my cousins, taken by my other cousin Ethan Hunt. To me, family is everything. At the end of the day, family is all you have, especially when the rest of the world turns its back. My cousins are my best friends who I don't see nearly enough! I know that they'll be with me through thick and thin and that I can always lean on them. I don't know what I would do without them!

What is the Girl Up Club like and how are you involved?

Girl Up is an organization that branches from the UN Foundation and has thousands of clubs across campuses internationally. These clubs consist of girls and boys focused on empowering young women leaders and allowing both genders to find allies, educate themselves on issues regarding gender equality, and creating tangible differences to create a more equitable future. I’ve been involved in the club by attending the monthly events and meetings. My greatest involvement is volunteering at our local women's shelter, bringing and serving a birthday meal to the women whose birthdays fell in the month. At our meetings in school, we discuss issues such as the stigma surrounding menstruation in society, the high rates of sex trafficking among women, and what it means to be an advocate for gender equality.

William Constant – Missouri
Interview by Claire Plath
Nomination by Angela Constant
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography
Issue 31 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: William Constant is a very inspiring teen because he is such an all-around good kid. He is a lifeguard and teaches swimming lessons to underprivileged children. He is active in his church youth group and is a role model for his classmates. He volunteers at church any chance he can - on the audio-visual team to helping pass out meals to the homeless.

How have you overcome dyslexia and the challenges that come with it, and how have you also inspired and helped others?
I found out I had dyslexia in the 3rd grade. After moving schools, I was fortunate enough to find a school that was very proactive with me and had a lot of programs that helped me advance. Even though I could not spell or write very well in the 4th grade, I tested as having a college level vocabulary. This helped my self-esteem a lot. My parents told me "everyone has something, and this is your something". It has been tough at times having dyslexia, and it can damage your self-esteem at times. One of the most challenging things for me is notetaking in class. Some of my teachers didn't understand how dyslexia affected me, so I had to advocate for myself and help them understand how I learn. It usually worked out fine after I talked to them. I have a friend who is also dyslexic and has not been as fortunate as me to get the help that would have helped him the most. I help him with his reading skills, and reading comprehension by giving him tips that I have learned.

What do you love most about life guarding and giving swim lessons to underprivileged children?
I took swimming lessons at the age of 2 because my mom couldn't swim and she wanted to make sure I could. I hated swim lessons. I was the kid that cried, ran around the pool, and wanted to go home. I had to take lessons for 3 years because I hated it so much. Eventually I learned to swim and love it now. Since my swimming lessons were so traumatic, I enjoy giving swimming lessons, because I know how scared they are, and try to alleviate fears. It is so rewarding to see a scared kid swim across the pool, and it also makes my job easier.

Tell me a little bit about the volunteer work you do through your church, and how you are also very active in your church’s youth group.
I started working in the technical booth during church services making sure the sound was ok. I really enjoyed doing this, so I advanced to overseeing the youth service sound a few times a month. And every Thanksgiving I help pack, and handout food boxes to members of the community that need a little extra help.

How have you become an inspiration through all that you have overcome, and what advice would you give to someone who is going through similar challenges as you have?

I feel like I am an inspiration because I am positive about my dyslexia. Everybody has something, this is my something. I would tell other people to be optimistic about the situation they are in. Look at the positive, not the negative, you may feel like your situation is out of control, but if you just stop and think through situations you will find a solution.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Learning to be myself around people, and not caring about what their opinion of me was. Over time I learned to not care that I was different. I realized other people are not looking at me at all, they are too worried about their own problems and insecurities, as I was about mine. My problems were mine; their problems were theirs, and the two didn't meet.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Be optimistic - if you cannot control it don't worry about it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I want to be working for the Corps of Engineers as a civil engineer.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love music and enjoy playing guitar and bass. I also like guns and enjoy shooting clay pigeons. I also like medieval history, swords, and sword fighting.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I am proficient in sword/light saber dueling.

Picture
Photography by Kate Duncan Photography

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

The topic I would like to present would be about how we as teens worry so much about what other people think of us, when in reality those people are worried about what I am thinking about them. People need to stop worrying and be themselves. No one really cares.

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Travel to every continent in the world and every country in Europe
2. Own a suit of medieval armor and wear it in public
3. Ice skate Lake Baikal in Russia

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my older brother, Carson who is 21, to be inspiring. He has cystic fibrosis, which is a genetic, life shortening disease that affects his lungs. He was hospitalized many times during high school for long periods of time. He did his homework in the hospital and graduated in the top tier of his class. He coughed a lot, and loudly, due to his condition, but he didn't care what people thought, he still was himself even though he was different. This inspired me to be myself and be optimistic about bad situations. Optimistic, because when he was born the lifespan for cystic fibrosis was 31. Today the lifespan is 47 due to the advances in research and new medications. If he had dwelled on the number 31, he would have missed out on a lot of fun in his life.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I really don't know how other people see me, but I remember a funny incident that stuck with me for years. In Middle School I was reprimanded publicly by a teacher for writing my 5 backwards - that has always been a problem for me with my dyslexia. I had to leave the classroom for a few minutes because I was crying and upset. When I returned to the classroom the next day, I learned everyone turned in their homework with all of their 5's backwards. That was an inspiration to me, and showed I am not alone. So, I guess, we inspired each other.

Logan Spielman

Picture

Logan Spielman - Texas
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Isabela Spielman
 Photography by Leslie Gilbert
Issue 31 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Logan Spielman is one of the most musically talented people I’ve ever met, and I’m not just saying that because I’m his sister. From the first time he picked up his trumpet in 6th grade, he’s had a knack and a passion for music. He’s tirelessly worked his way up in band, practicing every single day, and his work shows. When he’s not playing his trumpet, he’s learning melodies by ear on the keyboard, or fiddling with making ringtones on GarageBand. Outside of band, he’s a loyal friend, a great brother, and an all around great person to be around.
Picture

Why do you think out of all the instruments there are, you picked the trumpet?
I originally chose to play french horn in the sixth grade. I thought it was interesting and it sounded cool, and I would still be playing it today if it weren’t for my grandfather. My grandfather, who lives in New York and plays piano and congos in a local salsa band, told my mother that I seemed to be “a trumpet guy.” He was right. I find the trumpet to be such a beautiful instrument. It can be lyrical and smooth in one moment then extreme and impactful in the next. Trumpet provides me, and many others, with my own voice, an outlet to our inner thoughts and feelings when words aren’t enough. Because of this, I believe it is truly a versatile instrument.

Did learning how to play the trumpet come fairly easy or was it something you really had to work at? Explain.
At first, trumpet playing came naturally when I first started studying it in middle school. I may have an inherent talent for it, but the high caliber and expectations of the school district quickly made me realize that hard work was also necessary to excel.  Any brass musician knows that if you aren’t practicing every day, no matter how short the practice session is, you will have a hard time advancing your skills and developing a mature tone. I remember an analogy I heard at a brass wind masterclass held during the summer after my freshman year of high school, “Think of your developing skill set as a huge piggy bank. Every day you practice, you are saving a single penny in the bank. Every day you don’t practice, you are taking two out.” As I applied this lesson to my practice, I also developed a joy in seeking the most challenging pieces. Practice and hard work, the pursuit of getting the first part and more challenges became a virtuous circle.
Picture

Tell us about your thoughts on leadership and your passion for it.
I have been a section leader and drill instructor for the trumpet section of the Vandegrift HS Band for the past two years. I’ve also been a class president and officer in the Hill Country chapter of Young Men’s Service League. Before being honored with these positions and opportunities, I thought leadership was about leading others towards a generic goal. After working and performing these roles, I recognized that it was much more than that.  It was harder than that. I learned that leadership is also about leading through example. The ideal leader is a selfless role model, one who understands the needs and ambitions of the group and provides the inspiration for those they lead to achieve these goals. Being a leader teaches you what I believe to be the most important attribute someone can have, to be honest and humble, and that is something I strive to achieve and reflect in my everyday life.

Please tell us about the newly founded Young Men's Service League chapter and how you are involved in it.
As I said earlier, I held the position of class president and other officer positions of the Hill Country Chapter of the Young Men’s Service League from when it was founded in 2016 to today. As part of the founding class, it was important that we set the example for future classes, establishing a legacy of leadership and service that would benefit others for years to come. I personally worked towards volunteering many hours at multiple locations throughout the year. I believe that being a part of this organization and working these positions has pushed me to grow into a better leader, a more humble person, and it has taught me the importance of giving back to the community and those in need.
Picture

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?

As I am planning to study Architectural Engineering at Texas A&M University, I wish to see myself graduating from there with some sort of business opportunity like a study/work program or an internship at an engineering firm or design house, playing trumpet on the side. Right now, the thrill of jumping into a whole new world like college is what I am most excited about though.

Picture

Azurra Bukhari - Ontario
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination by Natasha Bukhari
Photography by Aleksandra Salamon
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Azurra is a young model, actress & aspiring singer from Toronto, Canada currently living in Dubai! She has starred in season 1 of the series “Go Iguanas” and has done commercials for
Warner Bros, Glad, Yas Waterworld, IMG, Nutella, Jelly Belly, Goody Pasta, STV, including fashion
shoots for makeup artists and photographers in London, Toronto and Dubai! She is also known for
singing covers on @tiktok!
Picture

What is it like living in Dubai?

It’s such an enriching experience living in Dubai. There are approximately 10 million people of which
approximately 8 million are expats. What this means, is that daily we are exposed to so many different nationalities and cultures, including that of local Emiratis who are native to the country. The weather is also fantastic, except for summer where it can get extremely hot, but that’s a great time of year to travel back to North America! Having said that, there are also tons of indoor activities, such as skiing, ice skating, trampoline parks, skate parks, indoor amusement parks, to keep us busy!

Tell us about your experiences with acting.
I have always enjoyed acting, and some might say I am very dramatic at times, lol. I acted in season 1
of Go Iguanas, an online tv show, and in a variety of commercials and social media shoots. Some of
these include Glad, Nutella, Warner Brothers, Jelly Belly, Goody Pasta, Fly Dubai, Mall of the
Emirates, IMG Amusement Park and Yas Waterpark. Shoot days are intense, with early morning
starts for hair, makeup, lines, and redoing scenes until just right, but when you see the finished
products its always worth it!

What has been your favorite commercial to be in and why?
I absolutely loved shooting the Goody pasta commercial. It was so creative and magical. It was
centered around a family eating pasta at the dinner table whose love for the pasta sent them into a
dreamland. In my scene, I was transported to a luxurious magical fairy land, wearing a gown of tulle
and shimmer. The set was out of this world, with over 200 mini trees and plants to make it look like I
was genuinely in a lush green forest. I felt like a princess, and it helped that I loved the pasta!

What was it like starring in a tv show?
It was an amazing experience and I made friendships that will last a lifetime. It helped me develop my confidence and get a sense of how much is entailed in shooting a series. When we watch tv, it looks so simple but the amount of people involved in each scene is phenomenal. I would say the
experience made me realize that when you love what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter how exhausting it is, because it doesn’t feel like work!

What are some singing techniques you use?
I try to practice warmups at least 3 times a week, practice my breathing, core muscles and drink lots
of water. I also do my Trinity exams annually to give me a goal of what to work towards. This year I
am doing grade 5.

What kind of songs do you cover when you post them on tik tok?
To be honest, I post songs that I’m currently listening to, really like, or just in the mood for on that day! Lately, people have been requesting songs so I’m also trying to work on that.
Picture
Photography by Lilly K Photography

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I am currently participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze programme. This requires me to
complete four sections comprised of a volunteering section, physical section, skills section and an
expedition section, which for me is the most challenging. Within our group of 6, we need to plan, train and complete an unaccompanied expedition. There are 20 conditions that we need to meet that include, planning an appropriate menu of cooked food, having no access to a mobile phone, being properly equipped with our utensils, tents and sleeping supplies for a minimum of 2 days and 1 night with minimal adult intervention. We have just completed the practice expedition with the final one in a few weeks and while I survived, there were a lot of things we will do differently next time. I’ll let you know how I get on!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Believe in yourself, and even when people tell you it’s cringey or try to dissuade you from pursuing
your dreams, if it brings you happiness don’t give up. People spend a lifetime searching for
contentment so if you’ve found it, you’re ahead of the game. But also, be kind to people, whether on
set, at school, in every aspect of your life, because this quality people will remember.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I will continue to act and sing and try to grow my following whilst focusing on school. I hope to
complete my IB diploma and then explore universities where I can pursue my dream!

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to play netball, spend time with my sister, and travel. Last year, I went to Nepal with my school, where we did a bit of community service. It was an inspiring and humbling experience that I’ll never forget.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I took ballet for 9 years and gymnastics for 8 so I can walk enpointe and do the splits!

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I have an app to help me get organized, as well as help from my parents, my grandmother, and
teachers at my school who are very supportive. It comes with a lot of backing from loved ones, who I am always grateful to.

3 Things on your bucket list
 To speak another language fluently
 To travel to an exotic location with my best friends when we turn 18
 To sing in front of a big audience at an arena or festival

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents inspiring because despite differences in career, they are both hardworking and
successful individuals who spend a lot of time with my sister and me. They instill solid values and keep communication open, while doing things for us with a smile. They are also supportive towards me pursuing my dreams!

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
It’s hard to think of myself as someone who inspires others, but my hope would be that I inspire them to believe in themselves, to follow their dreams and to be grateful for every opportunity that comes their way.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
This is truly an honour to be recognized by your magazine. Thank you. If people wish, they can follow

The Nomination: Jonah is an outstanding young man who demonstrates excellent leadership capabilities in his personal and scholastic lives and throughout service activities in his community. Jonah serves as the drumline captain in his school band, plays drums in his church praise band, and serves in the Boy Scouts while maintaining a 3.9 GPA in school. Jonah also belongs to the Beta Club and National Honor Society. He serves the community through work at the local mission and assisting teachers as well as students at the elementary school. What inspired you to start playing music and how long have you been playing?

When I was around eight years old, my dad began playing drum set for our church on Sunday mornings. My best friend and I at the time would sit in the pew closest to the drum set and watch him play. We would mimic the way he played. Eventually, dad caught on to what we were doing and decided to get me a drum set. Of course, it was an electric drum set so my parents wouldn’t have to hear me play constantly. But once I started playing, my interest in music started to grow and continues to grow as I moved on into the future.

What is your favorite thing about getting to share your music with others? Why?
I get to share the love of music in so many ways. Through marching band, concert band, & various honor bands I can play a variety of percussion instruments as well as compose. I am also blessed to be able to play drum set for our church youth group praise band which is probably my favorite part of sharing. I love being able to use the talents God blessed me with to lead worship.

How long have you been in the Boy Scouts and what do you like about it?

I started Cub Scouts as a first grader and crossed over into Boy Scouts at the end of fifth grade. It has been a major part of my life for almost 12 years. My favorite part of being a boy scout has been exploring the outdoors. Throughout the years my love of nature has grown as I have had the privilege of experiencing many outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and spelunking. Spending time outdoors and exploring is so much more entertaining to me than sitting behind a screen.

Tell a little bit more about working at your local mission, what does that entail?

Spending time serving at the Mission of Hope has been such a blessing. Most of the time I’ve volunteered there has been assisting with food give away by loading groceries for the clients. The service opportunity I look forward to each year is Christmas at the Mission. The mission provides Christmas for many local, low-income families. As a student volunteer, I have the privilege of walking a young child through to pick out a new jacket, new shoes, and toys while their parents are hearing the word of God and singing Christmas carols. It is such a joy to see their faces light up as they pick out their special items.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
I have big plans for the future. I am going to college to major in electrical engineering and minor in music technology. While in college I plan to be in the marching band and during the summer march Drum Corps International. I hope to graduate from college with a master’s degree in electrical engineering. After that, I just really want to get a solid job and settle down before building a family.

2 things on your bucket list.
1. I really want to tour the United States. I mean travel to every state in one long trip. And I have had an idea of collecting a pair of shoes from every state. This may never happen but if it does, I will be able to check it off my bucket list.
2. It is a dream of mine to march Drums Corps International. I plan to march for four or five summers. My ultimate goal though is to march with Carolina Crown, my absolute favorite drum corps.

Lia Catallo - Michigan
Interview by Claire Path
Nomination and Photography by pArt of Life Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Lia K Catallo is a singer-songwriter who gives of herself constantly, through her music, whether singing for a fundraiser or on the worship team at church. Lia is very passionate about social justice. On one of her mission trips to Haiti her church group was detained due to political unrest. The story made national news yet, despite her fear as they were surrounded by gunfire, etc, she finally made it home and said she would return tomorrow because she loved the people so much. She has a heart for helping to make the world a better place.

What influenced your passion to become a singer-songwriter, and what do you love most about it?
Growing up, I was immersed in music as my mom and dad are musicians. My mom, Jennifer Kincer, strongly influenced my passion. She has been my Vocal Coach & Manager for years. Songwriting is my favorite because writing songs is a way to express my feelings, connect with others and make an impact, potentially helping someone else get through their struggles as well.

How has your gift of music brought people together, and what do you think is one of your most meaningful songs you have written so far?
I think my gift of music brings people together by expressing real emotions about relatable topics. My voice studio often puts together charity events that we sing at, bringing about awareness of a topic or pure enjoyment for those attending.

I think one of the most meaningful songs I have written was about my mom, who is currently battling breast cancer. I poured my heart into it, wanting to express to her how much I care for and love her. I also love the song ‘Home,’ which I wrote on the Haiti Mission Trip, about finding my “home” in God. I always hope that there other people who can relate to my songs, potentially helping them as well.

What inspiring messages do your original songs stand for, and how do some of them relate to what teens go through?
All lot of my songs portray message about not being alone or searching for ‘who God is’ and finding Him. I feel like my songs are genuine and connecting. I want teenagers to know they aren’t dealing with things alone, because a lot of us go through the same things. I pray even one of my song connects with a person who might be struggling with that very song topic and helps them to get through it.

How have you inspired others by being there for them through tough times they may go through in their lives, and what advice would you continue to give to them?
I try to lead by example. God put me in a position of leadership on my worship team, I’m my vocal studio at fundraisers and charities and I get to lead worship at my school as well. I can only hope that someone may be impacted and inspired by something I’m singing, opening a door for a conversation and potentially, help.

Tell me a little bit about the mission trips you have been involved in and one of your most unforgettable moments you have experienced while being surrounded by different cultures.

Two years ago I went to Haiti on a Mission Trip and despite being detained there due to political unrest, involving gunfire, fires, etc., I would go back in a heartbeat. I loved being able to spread God’s love to the Haitian people. I just returned from a Mission Trip in Nicaragua, which I think may have been the best week of my life. It’s such a beautiful country and the people there are so grateful and loving, despite many living in dumps, literally. I led a group of kids, whom I fell in love with while I was there, and it was amazing. They are filled with pure joy and love.

Hailey Witkowski - Colorado
Interview by Zoe D’Angelo
Nomination and Photography by Kara Mullane Photography
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Hailey was born with a condition called bilateral delta phalanges which means she has an extra joint in each thumb. This has never stopped her from being a fantastic artist and when she wanted to play the violin in middle school her mom said "Go for it!" . She plays wonderfully and is a natural. Her music has always been as uplifting as her vibrant and caring personality. Because Hailey cares so much for people and how they feel, she has declared her desire to study Psychology and Literature so that she may help people and write books to inspire others.
Picture
Photography by Kara Mullane Photography

Tell us a little bit about the condition you were born with and how you stayed positive.
The condition I was born with is called Bilateral delta phalanges, a form of Syndactyly. It affected my hands' general structure and I am unable to bend the second joint in my thumb. I’ve stayed positive by embracing my differences from others, and that I can do just as much as anyone else even though I may be different.

When it comes to music, what genre is your favorite and why?
My favorite type of music is between classical and alt/rock pop. I enjoy these types of music because they both are very structured in the way that each note is put together and can blend very easily with other instruments while still being able to identify and follow each instrument and their notes. Alt/rock pop adds another element to this structure because the lyrics are very carefully crafted to tell a story as well as go along with the structure of the notes.

What are some of your goals?
Some of my goals are to go to college and to get into a career that I love and that makes me happy. I am currently looking into double majoring in college with Psychology and English Literature, because I have a passion for both understanding people and writing to inspire others. I hope to one day be able to write my own books and have them published to inspire others to pursue their own dreams.

What kind of books would you be interested in writing?
I would be interested in writing novels in fantasy and action/adventure, a story which allows me to create a whole world with characters that are relatable with their own imperfections and struggles that they would have to face and overcome. When I was younger, and I read stories with characters that had to face hardships and challenges, and they didn’t give up, it inspired me and helped me believe in myself. I also want to be able to create powerful books, which can make others imagine or feel what the character is going through, and show others how powerful writing and words can truly be.

Picture

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Over the summer I had the amazing opportunity of being able to intern at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science as a Teen Science Scholar. I worked behind the scenes in the Education Collections department, which is the department where they use all their materials to educate the public about ancient cultures, animals, and history. Working with people from so many different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences was an unforgettable opportunity that I will forever cherish, as well as the opportunity to learn so much more about everything they used.

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
I keep myself organized with everything I have on my plate by spacing out and planning what is due sooner, and how important it is at the moment. I have often kept all my work in order to be completed in time by scheduling out time to work, but when I fail to keep up with my schedule I suffer from anxiety. I have struggled with anxiety in recent years, and at points it had become overwhelming and I was unable to focus or perform my best at anything that I had to do. This made me realize that I had to step back and just take it one step at a time to allow myself to be able to complete everything that I needed to in an orderly and proficient manner.

Maddox Kennerson - California
Interview by Olivia Bush
Photography by Shanna Kreza Photography (above)
and Laura Kennerson (below)
Issue 30 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Maddox Kennerson @rockstarmadman is inspiring because he is ok with being himself and being different. He always has been the kind of kid who beat to his own drum. He is serious about his music and is humble and kind.
Picture
At what age did you start playing guitar and why did you start playing?
I started playing guitar as a toddler in my dad's lap if you count that! I would sit in his lap and reach over the guitar and just play noise. I was always drawn to music and the guitar. I learned how to play songs at the age of 5 with my dad and then started formal lessons at around 7 years old.

Who or what inspired you to start playing guitar?
My Dad. My dad played guitar at home just for fun. It is a hobby of his. I have always looked up to my Dad. He's a great role model. He is patient and kind and I think there is nothing he doesn't know or can't do.
My guitar teacher Ray Kidd (when I was 8) is another person who inspires me. He believed in me when no one else (other than my parents) did. He made me feel good about who I am and how different I was.
And a famous musician that I find inspiring is Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue. He doesn't care what anyone else thinks. He does his own thing! If someone tells him NO... he will do it just to prove them wrong! I find that he has helped me to strive to feel the same way!

What genre of music do you like to play the most? why?
I love to play Rock or Metal Music because it's what I love to listen to! I have just started to branch out to other genres and I love to add a little rock vibe to pop songs or songs that don't have any guitar in them at all!

Picture
What do you like most about playing your music?
Music is an escape. It brings back memories, and it takes you places. Being on stage performing my music is my happy place because it feels amazing! Music is a way to express yourself when you can't find any other way to express yourself.

If you were to pursue a career in music what specifically would you like to do?
I want to be a performing musician. My mom used to ask me this question every year on the first day of school and on the last day of school. My answer has NEVER changed. (well maybe a tiny bit...) I used to say a Rockstar and now I just say a Musician. Why? Because Music is my passion, and everyone always says to find your passion and make it your job. If you love what you do it won't feel like work at all.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I think I have accomplished is not letting the haters get to me and not allowing myself to get caught up in the negativity.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
BE YOURSELF! The world has too many copycats and too many people trying to be other people. Just be YOU! and of course PRACTICE! If you can't do it now.... you will be able to soon!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I will be a senior in High School! I do plan to go to college too. I see myself doing more of what I love and performing with my band at least 2 times a month! I would LOVE to get paid to do what I love, so hopefully I am getting paid to perform then!

Picture
What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
I love to ride my mountain bike around my home with friends and my dirt bike with my Dad in the desert. I also love to build and experiment with making things.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I'm double-jointed? Does that count?
Ok, I have one for you. I am full of information about cars! I can tell you the year of a car by its physical features. I am obsessed with cars and technology!

How do you keep yourself organized with everything you have on your plate?
My mother is an organization queen! She makes lists and breaks everything down for me so that it doesn't get overwhelming. I also set reminders on my phone a lot!

3 Things on your bucket list
1. Buy a Tesla
2. Go to the Carribean
3. Headline a sold-out show

Who do you find inspiring?
The people I constantly feel inspired by are:
Nikki Sixx (bassist of Motley Crue).
DJ Ashba (guitarist of Sixx Am, former guitarist of Guns N Roses).
Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla and SpaceX)
and Steve Jobs (CEO/co-founder of Apple)

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I found my passion very young. I was in a kindergarten fashion show where we dressed up like what we wanted to be when we grew up (for me a Rockstar) and walked the runway.
I played smoke on the water by deep purple on stage. It was my first performance!
I have always been a bit different. No one else my age had a clue who the musicians were that I listened to. But I didn't care! I just stayed true to me. It is hard to do sometimes when you don't fit in with the others your age. The thing is, what makes someone inspiring to one, may not be inspiring to another.
I had someone tell me I inspired them to start an Instagram page to share their music. I have had people tell me I inspire them to stay positive. I have had others who have similar passions for music who have said I inspire them to keep pushing. I even have had some grown-ups who have started playing or learning guitar because of my influence. One of my favorites is a friend who said if I could get out and do what I loved than he could too! And he created a band and performs all the time now!

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I have had some amazing opportunities. I played in an opening band for LA Guns at the legendary Whiskey a-go-go! I go to an Arts school and get to play music I love and hang out with people who share the same passions! I guest regularly in a band called Heavy Revel with professional musicians, many of whom have toured with some of the greats! I have played on stages from House of Blues to tiny small-town bars. I have been able to lay down tracks in a recording studio with an Instagram musician friend for her upcoming album, and I have recorded my own original music too! I know this is only the beginning of what is to come, and I feel very fortunate!

I truly appreciate this opportunity. It is humbling and inspiring to me, to think that I could possibly inspire someone else the way people inspire me!
