If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present a topic, it would be figure skating. This sport has taught me so much more than just being a competitive figure skater. It has taught me how to set attainable goals, how to persevere through tough challenging times, how to be strong and committed and present myself well. I’ve learned how to feed my body and keep it healthy and how to be a loyal friend to my teammates. I’ve accepted the challenge to be a role model to the younger generations, my family and peers.

How did you get started in figure skating and how long have you been doing it?
I got started in figure skating when I was in 1st grade. A classmate of mine mentioned she took figure skating lessons and I thought it sounded so fun and I wanted to try it. The following weekend she invited me to their "bring a friend" night at her learn to skate program. I was hooked right away and it has been my passion ever since. This winter it will be 12 years that I've been a competitive figure skater.

What is a memorable accomplishment for you from your experiences in the sport?
Being a figure skater there are always new moves, new jumps, new spins and many techniques to learn so I feel each time I've accomplished one of these, it's pretty memorable. My most recent memorable accomplishment is passing my Senior level moves test which earned me the title by US Figure Skating of a gold medalist figure skater.

What is a favorite memory from figure skating?
Aside from the friendships I have made, my favorite memory is the opportunity I was given by Make-A-Wish Michigan to perform for Olympic Gold Medalists, Meryl Davis and Charlie White. They were the guests of honor at the annual Wish Ball, and I had the privilege pf skating a performance for them and 600 other guests in attendance. I was able to meet them, present them with flowers, get photos with them and hold their Sochi Olympic gold medal. It was so huge and heavy. I will never forget that day.

What was your portrait experience like with Kenny Hekhuis Photography at your skating rink?
My experience with Kenny was amazing! I had so much fun, and I hope I get the chance to do more photo shoots with him. After skating almost 12 years, I have hundreds of photos of myself on the ice. However, the photos I got from him are truly one of kind and nothing like the ones I already have.

What did you love most about it?
I really loved the one-on-one time on the ice with Kenny. It's not often I get the ice to myself so having just the two of us there capturing what I love most was just amazing. I would do it over and over again!!

Picture
Photography by Kenny Hekhuis Photography

What else would you most like to talk about?
I would like to talk about giving back. At the age of 9 is when my fundraising journey for Make-A-Wish MI began and took me to places I never imagined. Never expecting anything in return, I’ve received a lifetime of gratitude for what I have and have been able to give. From the Prudential Spirit of Community awards, to Governor Service awards to recognition from the President as well as many other awards and acknowledgements along the way, I’m very blessed for the Children I’ve been able to help grant wishes for more than anything else.

Tell us more about this. How did you get started with it?
I was a very shy little girl and although I loved having Birthday parties, I didn't like having all the attention on me. Especially when opening gifts. Since I was a figure skater, at the age of 7 I started having my Birthday parties at the ice rink. By the age of 8 I began asking for donations rather than gifts and at the age of 10 is when my journey for supporting Make-A-Wish Michigan began. I love the organization and what they stand for so after my 10th Birthday asking for donations to Make-A-Wish, I started doing year-round fundraisers for the organization.

What were the Governor Service awards and recognition from the President like?
Receiving recognition from our Governor back in 2016 was such a great honor. I was able to attend a wonderful ceremony where I was recognized for my outstanding community service. Although I was painfully shy and didn't like the spotlight on me, receiving recognition as big as this only furthered my cause and helped me to raise even more money for children with life threatening medical conditions. Getting the letter in the mail from President Obama congratulating me on my hours of community service was an honor as well.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

One thing that I feel is inspiring about me is my patriotism for this great country. I have had many family members serve for our country, and I love hearing their brave stories. Being taught to be proud of your country is so important to me. I am forever grateful for all the men and women who have fought for my freedom.

How do you feel about what is going on in the world today?
We currently have so many issues going on in the world. However, I feel one of the biggest issues is the separation in our society. There are so many strong opinions and it's so hard for others to accept that people have different opinions. I wish everyone could agree to disagree and still come together as one Nation.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I've ever had to accomplish I am still working on. Figure skating is not an easy sport, but the challenges of it have made me who I am today.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice is to always stay true to yourself and to have high standards for yourself. Set goals and work to achieve them. No matter what, always be confident in who you are.

Who do you find inspiring?
One of my favorite figure skaters, Ashley Wagner has always inspired me. Her fierce personality on the ice gives me fire to keep going. She is always true to herself and admits her struggles which gives hope to younger figure skaters to keep pushing through.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I've been told that my dedication, perseverance, and work ethic inspires others. I was given a sportsmanship award at my skating club for being an athlete that is looked up to and represents the sport of figure skating well.

Rylie Dewley

Rylie Dewley – Michigan
Nomination by Tiffany Dewley
Photography by Lindsay King Portraits
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Rylie Dewley is constantly thinking of others and ways that she can make a difference in her community. Her community service is extensive. She most recently created & managed an adopt a senior program for the seniors at her HS. Out of the 435 seniors who participated she got all of them adopted out by members of the community. She is doing the same thing this year and she's not a senior. She also adopted a highway and maintains that along with teaching youth about being Heart smart. She has received the Presidential volunteer award along with other service awards.

Tell us about your Start Heart Smart program.
I was born premature and at 3 days old the doctors at Hurley Hospital had to stop my heart and restart it. It was at this time that I was diagnosed with ASD/VSD (holes in the heart) and a heart murmur. Growing up I had to be cautious of what I did to make sure my heart was healthy. When I was 5yrs old I was told the holes in my heart had closed. A few years ago, I participated in a Free Hurley Hospital/Tommy’s Heart Teen Heart Check. The doctors noticed something was off with my echocardiogram and I was sent to a cardiologist. It was then that I was diagnosed with mitral insufficiency and leaky valves. Throughout my childhood I struggled with different cardiovascular issues, as do many other children. Many people do not realize that children and teens can have cardiovascular issues as well. Through Start Heart Smart I can help educate America’s youth on the topic of cardiovascular issues. With this program I attend schools and teach children, teens, and adults how to keep and have a healthy heart.

What is your Adopt a Senior Program?
I started the Adopt-a-Senior Program last year for seniors who attend Grand Blanc High School (my High School). Last year, the seniors missed out on a lot of opportunities due to COVID-19. They were not able to have their prom or even a normal graduation. Senior year is the one year of school that everyone looks forward to and they missed a lot of it. So, I decided I wanted to create a program to help honor the students and to hopefully brighten their day. I started a group on Facebook that grew quickly and now has over 1,500 members of the community in it. Parents, guardians, and others can post about their senior; what they enjoy, their favorite food, etc. Then, a member of the community will “adopt” them and send them gifts. It shows the seniors that the community is thinking of them and it helps put a smile on their faces.

What are your goals this year for both programs?
During this time, it is hard to be able to promote my programs in a “normal” setting, however, I am working on virtual events and videos for both events. I am going to continue to promote both of my programs this year in hopes that I can reach even more people than I previously had. Being the winner of Inspiring Teen Magazines would allow me to do this.

Picture
Photography by Lindsay King Portraits

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am the first Majorette in Grand Blanc in over 30 years. I do my best to try to serve my community any way I can.

That's exciting! Tell us more about that. How did you get the honor and what were your roles and responsibilities?
I have been twirling since I was about 5yrs old and as I got older, I was given the opportunity to twirl for my middle school. I was able to perform at football and basketball games for the 7th and 8th grade teams but also for the freshman and junior varsity basketball games at Grand Blanc High School. When I was in 8th grade, I met with the color guard coach and band director for the Grand Blanc High School band. I expressed to them how I was wanting to twirl for the school. They were so supportive and allowed me to be a part of their program. I can twirl during the varsity football pregame and halftime shows but also at the varsity girls and boys basketball games. Being the GBHS majorette has been an amazing experience. I help promote the band by traveling to different baton competitions and performing my High School majorette routine in hopes of placing first. I also promote the marching band throughout my community by doing different types of performances.

What is the Presidential Volunteer Award, how did you get it, and what does it mean for you to get such a prestigious award?
The Presidential Volunteer Award is awarded to individuals who complete more than 100 hours of service work. It means so much to me to have received this award. I received this award two years in a row which was such an amazing experience. To be able to give back and help others really means a lot to me.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I love reading! I have been an avid reader since I was young, and I always try to preach to younger children to read as much as they can. Reading not only helps strengthen your mind but it can also transport you to a different world.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I’m actually pretty good at archery. I am not competitive in it nor do I hunt but I love to go out to my backyard and practice. It helps me release my stresses and connect with nature.

3 Things on your bucket list
I am a pretty adventurous person. I would love to be able to skydive, go white water rafting, and sit passenger in a race car.

Nick Miller – Michigan
Nomination and Photography by Debography
Issue 43 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Nick Miller has always loved football and his high school career started out rough when his respected and loved coach lost his life due to depression. Nick fought hard to achieve and maintain a leadership position on the team, including being named Team Captain, Defensive MVP, 1st MAC White Division Linebacker and being named to the MHSAA 1st Team All County and All Academic Teams. In addition, he is an excellent student and is looking forward to playing football in college while pursuing his degree.

Tell us about your football journey.

I started playing flag football in third grade and have continued playing since - I love the game! I play middle linebacker and h-back, leading the team as one of the captains for the past three years. As a result, I received defensive MVP, and All County First Team Linebacker, My hope is that my hard work on both the field, in practice and in the weight room is recognized by younger players and that they take it to heart and try to put forth as much effort.

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment with football?
As a senior, I was handed down the flag for the Wrecking Crew and led the team onto the field each game senior year. In addition, being selected for the MAC White division All County First Team Linebacker and All County Academic Team were huge honors as they were county-wide.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am very competitive in all aspects and enjoy not only sports, but hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors in my spare time. I hope to continue these hobbies into the future.

What do you think is your strongest skill or attribute is as a leader and what is something you want to instill upon all of those who you mentor or look up to you?
I've always been a team leader and sensitive to the issues my teammates face and helping them through them. I would hope that I have been able to help others and inspire them to do the same.

How has COVID-19 changed your game and what is something good that came out of it?
Covid caused my team to miss out on most of the senior year of football, however we were able to adapt and train and come together as a team to play late in the season. The good would be that it showed us we could pull together to work harder to make it to the playoffs for a successful season.

Madison Lockwood – Michigan
Nomination and Photography by Sweet Life Photography
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Madison Lockwood started her own rock band in 7th grade as the Drummer. She currently practices with three bands and is working virtually on drums with bands around the world. She has won several talent shows and is now songwriting and producing music.
Madison has a large following on several social media platforms as an Influencer, drum cover performer. She inspires people to know Jesus, faith, and to follow their dreams.
In addition to being a musician, Madison has been a three sport athlete through her career. She also finds time to help organizations in the community.

Tell us about your drumming career from start to where you want to go.

My drumming career started at a young age. My dad was in a band and had practice at our house, which meant drums and other musical instruments were in my reach. I picked up some a pair of drumsticks and instantly fell in love with the instrument and groove. It started as me just playing around and playing along to songs, and someday I wish to be a touring musician.

How difficult was it to start your own band?
I live in a small town, so it was difficult to find 4 musicians in the area who all wanted to create the same music and be on a similar commitment level.
Picture
Photography by Sweet Life Photography

What is a favorite memory or accomplishment from your musical career?
My favorite memory from my music career was when my band, Rage Under Age, played our first paid show at a venue in Lansing. We had tickets printed and sold them ourselves, packed the venue, had an amazing crowd, and played a great show. I will never forget the fun we had playing there and going out to eat afterwards with our earnings.

How are you working with bands from around the world?
To collaborate with other artists around the world we normally start off by connecting with one another on social media. From that point on, we choose the song we want to play and record the tracks of our instruments. We take a video of ourselves playing the song from our location, then share it with one another so we can edit and combine our videos. Our tracks are combined on the audio software creating one song. Throughout the video editing process, there are a lot of mixing and working on perfecting takes.

Picture

What are the talent shows and how did you find out about them?
Talent shows are normally hosted by schools or towns or other events. They are basically when several people put on a show and showcase whichever talent they have. My band and I have played many of them, along with the ones I have played before creating the band.

How are you creating and producing music content on social media platforms? What is your following like/your fans like?
I have been creating videos on YouTube (Madison Lockwood), posting images on Instagram to promote myself and my channel, making funny TikTok videos that would appeal to drummers and musicians while posting clips of my drumming content on there also. My fans and following are incredibly supportive of me. It's so crazy to engage with so many people that enjoy what I do. My following is mainly drummers and musicians, along with people who just enjoy the many genres of songs that I play (mainly hard rock). I can be found on YouTube as Madison Lockwood, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok as @madisonlockwoodYT

Bella Mason - Michigan
Nomination by Angelina Mason
Photography by Portraits by Alex
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Bella Mason is incredible and so inspiring! She has battled and overcome so many adversities the past few years and somehow, she continued to do good for others around her. She decided to be a compassionate, hardworking, and smiling person throughout all of it. She works so hard for a local photography company and is so passionate about photography. Especially the creativity & skills that go into taking photos. She plans to have a career within fine arts one day and wants to focus on that moving forward in her education. She is inspiring to me and so many other adults and young people I know.

Tell us about working at a photography studio while being in high school. What do your duties entail and what do you love about it most?

Working at the studio Portraits by Alex has been the best experience of my life and throughout it I’m ecstatic to say I’ve found my passion. At the start I was recruited to be a senior representative for the studio by Alex and his wife Lisa who are the incredible team behind the photography studio I assist at now. They discovered me from my sister previously having her senior portraits taken with them. They then proceeded to ask me if I was interested in helping on a shoot one day. This was just the beginning of me discovering this world of all my interests but in one place. I began travelling on shoots, assisting with lighting, photo/pose ideas, and fashion changes. In essence making our models feel confident and comfortable in their photos. This way they can truly enjoy their time with us. After a few months when the senior shoots slowed down, I took over all the social media accounts for Portraits by Alex and began running more marketing than we were ever able to do before. I also design and construct our window displays every month. It's something I take a lot of pride in. Finally, the part that I love most about my job is being able to instantly make connections with people. This experience has been more than eye-opening and truly a blessing.

Walk us through your cheerleading and softball journeys.
I began cheerleading when I was in 6th grade and made Varsity when I was a sophomore in high school. Cheer is the most time committed sport at our high school not to mention it’s probably the most physically demanding. I was honored to be a part of the team, but I knew when I couldn’t mentally give myself to the team or the coach110% anymore it was time to give it up. I wanted to find interests outside of sports. Thankfully I found and thrived in photography but the memories I made with that team are ones I will never forget.
My softball journey began when I was 8 years old working all the way up to being a starting centerfielder for the Varsity team my freshman year alongside my sister & best friend who was a senior at the time. I will continue playing softball this year and will receive an award for being on the team for all 4 years of high school.
Picture

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished throughout high school?
I’ve been struggling with anxiety, depression and PTSD since the beginning of sophomore year dealing with all of this including panic attacks has not been easy. Throughout high school I have been facing it head on. I’ve been in therapy for two years now. It's helped me the most. It gives me time to talk and process everything going on for once in my life. Since being in therapy I have been able to get through the day feeling much more like myself again and I’m now able to perform my best at school, work, and softball.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Embrace everything that makes you different. It’s boring to fit in, don't change who you are but PLEASE be more of who you are. There is only one person like you in this world so celebrate every day of it. Find something you are passionate about, set goals and stay focused. I promise it will never feel like you’re working a day in your life if you love it.

Picture
Photography by Portraits by Alex

What are your plans?/Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
During college I plan to start a YouTube account with content consisting of beauty tips, photography tips, and fashion advice. Hopefully, I can become someone viewers feel comfortable reaching out to when they are struggling, need advice or just someone to talk to. Since modeling for senior portraits I love the idea of being in front of a camera I would love to begin modeling throughout college as well.
In 5 years I plan to graduate from Wayne State with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography then I’d like to find a job where I could possibly photograph for magazine advertisements but my ultimate goal is to become a creative director.

Nomination by Brandy Kenny
Photography by Lindsay King Photography
Issue 42 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: 2020 was to be Claudia’s year...her year to dip her pageant heels in the pool and make a splash! She finished 2019 with some wins, but she wanted a local pageant title. She was supposed to gain experience by participating in Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen pageant...but COVID hit. She’s lost a whole year of competing but she’s still hustling and working on her social platform - Claudia’s Closet 4 Kids. She’s even donated some of her personal hygiene items to a local YWCA campaign. She’ll continue to move forward and practice until it’s her time up on the stage again.

Tell us more about your career in pageantry. When did you start and why? What have you accomplished, and what do you love about it?
I started competing in pageants in 2019 and completed three pageants prior to COVID-19 shutting down the ability to compete. In those three pageants, I placed in the top three while competing against other teens up to age 17, and I was 12 at the time! I love to do pageantry and compete in the Miss America Organization (MAO) because I get to meet new people and because I get to do things I have never done before. I have met so many new people through this organization that are now my friends that I love dearly, and I love spending time with them.

What is Claudia's Closet 4 Kids? How did you get it started, where is it now and what are your goals with it?
Claudia’s Closet 4 Kids is a closet in my school office where students can go to get any personal hygiene products they may need. When kids enter middle school, their bodies start to change and some kids do not have the necessary products they need to help them, so I decided to create Claudia’s Closet 4 Kids so they have access to the items free of charge. I currently keep the closet stocked through personal donations. My goals for Claudia’s Closet are to expand my closet to other schools and communities in Michigan and find corporate or local sponsors to keep the closet(s) stocked.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have been involved with dance since I was 3 years old. I have danced competitively the last 5 years for Kim's Dance Dynamics. Tap dancing is my pageant talent, but I enjoy all types of dance.
I am also involved in our local theater and have participated in their stage adaptations of Tarzan and Matilda. I have also danced in their annual Holiday Christmas Show the past two years.
I was recently selected to be a photography model for Lindsay King Photography. She has created a Model Squad of six girls to represent her photography business.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be on and why?
Why volunteering is good for students and essential to your community.

Why do you think volunteering is beneficial? Who do you volunteer for and when did you get started? How would you recommend others to find ways to volunteer in their community if they never have?
I think volunteering is important because it gives you the chance to make a difference and give back to your community, it also helps you develop or discover new skills. To get started in volunteering, find something you are passionate about and research places and organizations that offer volunteering opportunities. I find my volunteer opportunities through local channels or school functions that I can easily donate my time to.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
To keep pushing at whatever it is you want to do and do not let other people’s opinion stop you from doing what you are passionate about.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
In five years I see myself graduating high school and going to college for a Teaching degree or a degree in Orthodontics.

Maya Gonzales – Michigan
Interview by Inspiring Teens
Nomination & Photography by Sweet Life Photography
Issue 41 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Maya Gonzales had a vision for her life from an early age. She always knew her path in life would be an artist and musician. Maya has dedicating her life to her violin, piano, guitar, and artwork. She has been fortunate to travel the world playing her music and extremely fortunate to attend Interlochen Arts Academy. Her good fortune comes by having a passion, drive, and dedication to be the best artist she can possibly be. Her artistry is bigger than herself. She continually looks at how her artistry can affect change in her community and the lives of others.

Please share your music career with us. When did you start, which instrument is your favorite, and where and what you are practicing now?
I officially started my music career when I was about 6 years old, taking piano lessons. But even before then, I remember singing folk songs with my grandpa while he played guitar. While I have always been a classically trained musician, I owe my grandpa a great due of thanks for being one of the people that kept me motivated. After about 5 years of taking piano lessons, I started taking violin lessons as well. I played in my high school orchestra, my local symphony orchestra, and played in a string quartet at weddings. I also attended multiple camps from the ages of 12 to 16. My junior year I auditioned for Interlochen Art Academy, was accepted, and played violin in the academy symphony. In the midst of playing violin and piano, I learned ukelele, bass guitar and acoustic/electric guitar. Im now still studying at Interlochen Arts Academy, focusing on fashion, but trying to improve my guitar playing.

What is one of your favorite memories music has brought you?
Either travelling to Europe to tour with a youth symphony, or travelling to Miami with the Interlochen orchestra. In Europe I performed at beautiful churches and venues across France, Germany, and Luxembourg. In Miami we performed at The New Word Center for a sold out crowd of 700 people.

What type of artwork do you do?
I do all types of artwork, but some of my favorite mediums are charcoal, pencil, and oil/acrylic paint. I like to make conceptual artwork that is meaningful to me and to the people who see it. Conceptual art is nice because it depends on the viewer to determine the meaning behind it, and it can be different for everyone.

What types of fashion do you design and where do you get your inspiration?
Right now, I design mainly dresses and some shirts, but I am hoping to work my way up to other garments like jackets and suits. I get my inspiration from all over. It can be something as simple as seeing an outfit I like on Instagram and using that for inspiration. But it can also be a very deep and involving process where I find a theme to work with and base a garment off that. I also love looking in fashion magazines and seeing all of the new trends, I think my favorite magazine is ‘W’.

Issue 39 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Breann Dyer has overcome so much to be where she is today starting with struggling with school since 1st grade. We had her tested and got her a IEP, she did summer school and had a tutor at the age of 6. We then switched her to a charter school and with her hard work and determination she was at grade level and never looked back by 7th grade. All along while dancing up to 20-30 hours a week at 2 dance studios. This past December she lost her oldest brother and has pushed forward as our entire family has been struggling and was at a 2.9 gpa and currently getting a 4.0 gpa even though it's all online. She's had to work hard for everything and continues to do so with grace, caring, and compassion. She plans to study interior design.

What is your favorite kind of dance and why do you love it?
I have spent many hours training in ballet which is part of the reason it is my favorite kind of dance. I love ballet so much because it is so graceful, and it always tells a story. There is always a meaning behind each movement, and you can learn how to make it your own, to tell your own story within every performance. I have grown a lot through dance, and ballet is a type of dance that will always hold a special place in my heart.
My favorite part about dancing is being able to escape the outside world as soon as I walk into the studio. I could be going through a rough day, then I go to dance and it’s like none of that ever happened, because I have dance to help me let go, and be free. Dance has always been a part of my life, and it has helped me get through so much. I started dancing when I was three years old, and never stopped. Though I may not remember my first ballet class, I do know that it is what started my love for ballet.

Why do you choose to dance at 2 dance studios? What is the difference?
My passion for all forms of dance is why I choose to dance at two studios. The difference between them is one studio is strictly ballet, and the other is where I get to learn my other genres of dance. At Greater Lansing Ballet Company, I get to do big ballet productions like the Nutcracker, which is one of my favorites to perform, and I also learn a lot of ballet technique. At Fusion Dance Center I not only take extra ballet classes, but I also get to perform jazz, tap, contemporary, hip hop, pom pon, lyrical, heels, and pointe. For the past three years I have been on the Imagery competition team as well. I love dancing at two studios so I can be a well-rounded dancer and get to have more opportunities.

What is your favorite memory from dance?
My favorite memory from dance is the first class I took at Fusion Dance Center. It was just a summer class so I could get to know the faculty and my future classmates. I made the choice to change studios to find a healthier, and more challenging environment. Within the first few minutes of class I knew I made the right decision, by the support I was getting from everyone around me, and I couldn’t be happier.

What do you do in school to stay ahead?
School doesn't come easy to me. I have always had to work extra hard to do well. To dance as much as I do, and still succeed in school, I had to figure out what tools work best for me. Whenever I get the chance to work ahead on schoolwork, I take it. I also learned that time management, asking questions, and taking notes that I understand, is the key to my success. What I do know is that no matter how hard school gets for me I will never give up on anything.

Issue 38 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Jenna is an inspiration, she lost her father at a young age due to a PTSD suicide and has a developmentally disabled little sister.  She is a wonderful soul who always helps others.  In spite of all her challenges, she maintains a high grade point average in addition to working nearly full time to help support her family.  She made Varsity Cheer her freshman year and has maintained her status through senior year. She is a driven young woman, focused on getting to college and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!

How long have you been cheering and what inspired you to start?
I’ve been cheering since I was five. Cheer has always been apart of my family. My mom was a coach and manager for a local team where we live. My oldest sister also cheered. I was always at practice and games watching and love it, it looked so fun. My sister and her friends would always put me in cool stunts and teach me tumbling skills .

What did it mean to you to have made varsity cheer as a freshman? What is your favorite memory from cheer and why is it your favorite?
It meant so much to make varsity as a freshman because at my high school freshman could only make freshman or junior varsity. It meant even more knowing that I was going to be put in rounds for a very important competition. My favorite memory is being on the sideline with my team cheering on the football players and the fans. Also, being on the mat for competitions, feeling the rush from the nerves but also excitement when everything goes good.

Has it been difficult having to step up and help out around your family? What have you learned from having to do this?
At times it can be a little difficult but I want to help as much as possible. It has definitely made me more mature and responsible growing up compared to other. It also made me realize how no matter what life isn’t going to be easy and sometimes people need a little help here and there.

How do you balance school, clubs. family, and working? What are your tips for others on how to balance many things like you do?

Trying to balance everything is a lot sometimes and not always easy. I balance it by trying to plan out a schedule each week, and understand when and what I have going on each day. Tips for others would be that communication with your bosses, coaches, teachers etc. is very critical. Most of the time as long as you talk it out with them ahead of time, you are more likely to have flexibility and be able to get them all done.

What goals do you have for your future?
My goals for the future are to go to college and maintain a good GPA. I hope to go into medical school, work In a hospital as a neonatal nurse, and hopefully end up as a neonatologist as I become more educated in that field.

Shayne Beaufait – Michigan
Interview by Olivia Bush
Nomination and Photography by Images by Marie Moore
Issue 37 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

The Nomination: Shayne Beaufait is an inspiring teen because he overcame a major life challenge with the power of positivity! In October 2018 he was severely injured during a hockey game, breaking 2 vertebrae. He remained positive throughout his ordeal and was back in school one week later. Within 3 months, he was back on the ice and named a top goal scorer in the State Finals. He went on to be awarded the Barbara Ann Karmanos Humanitarian Award for Adversity. Besides playing AAA hockey, he’s a National Honor Society member and competitive golfer. He has also taught himself to play the guitar.

What inspired you to start playing hockey? What is your favorite moment from playing?
I come from a family of hockey players. Specifically, my dad inspired me to play. My favorite moment from my hockey career was scoring the game winning goal in overtime at the Silver Sticks International Tournament and being honored MVP of the tournament.

Tell me more about your injury from playing hockey. What was going through your head when you realized you were injured?
I was hit in the back going full speed causing me to collide with the boards head first. I suffered 2 spinal compression fractures. First, the only thing going through my head was trying to breathe because the wind was knocked out of me so badly. Once I could breathe, I wanted to try to get up. My coach helped me up and I skated off to where I was helped by my parents into the locker room. My only thoughts from that point on were making sure my mom knew I was going to be okay, and wondering when I could return to hockey.

How did you stay positive through your injury and stay motivated to keep going?
I liked to tell myself that everything happened for a reason, and even though I wasn’t exactly sure what the reason was for the injury, I kept a mentality that I was going to come back stronger and better than ever to prove everyone wrong that thought I would never touch the ice again.

What was it like being the top goal scorer in the state finals and winning the Humanitarian Award for Adversity after coming back from your injury?
The state championships after coming back from the injury were the highlight of that year. I had worked so hard to regain strength and confidence in returning back to the ice that it felt amazing to be playing my best and being rewarded with goals when they mattered most. It was a true honor winning the Humanitarian Award for Adversity mostly because it was such a nice feeling to be recognized for the amount of adversity that I had to overcome in order to be able to get back onto the ice and succeed.

How do you stay happy all the time? What are some tips you have for others on how to stay motivated and happy?
I like to surround myself with things that make me happy, whether that be friends, family, sports, my guitar, etc. When you’re doing something that makes you happy, and you have the outlook that it's up to you and not anyone else whether you should feel happy or not, it’s pretty easy. Some tips for others to be happier would be: don’t wait around for anyone or anything else to make you happy. You aren’t obligated to be what people think you are-- if you are unhappy, make a change and find things for yourself that make you happy.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have ever accomplished is overcoming injuries throughout my sports career and always finding a way to come back motivated and better than before I was hurt

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
I would tell them that they should have a mindset that everything happens for a reason. I would also say that life is unpredictable and short, so spend it doing things you love with people you love and don’t dwell on regrets or worry about things in the future. Enjoy life in the present while you can.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years I see myself graduated from college with a business degree in finance. Hopefully with a steady job either working for a finance company or even on my own with clients.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
Since hockey and guitar have both been mentioned, I also play golf competitively. I spend many of my days at the course. I have won several tournaments and I hope to get a scholarship to play in college.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
A hidden talent that most people don’t know about me is that I am very good at math and with numbers in general.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
It would be in the mindset of someone who is happy and successful. I am still very young and have not achieved nearly as much as very successful people have, but I believe I know a lot about what motivates people and how to become successful.

3 Things on your bucket list
1.    Skydive
2.    Travel to Hawaii
3.    Play Pebble Beach Golf course

Who do you find inspiring?
I find Robert Downey Jr. very inspiring because he believes people should live life to the fullest and do whatever makes them happy regardless of what anyone else thinks. He is highly successful and appears to be living life very enjoyably.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I think so many people feel like they aren’t that happy so I think I inspire others by opening their mind to the idea that happiness is not something to wait around for, it’s actually self achievable with some effort.

Anything else you’d like to tell us?
I want to thank you guys at ITM for the opportunity for my views and outlooks to be seen/heard and to hopefully motivate others.

I know you have spent a lot of time figuring out your goals for your future. Tell me all about these goals you have!

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I want to do for my future career and what college I will fit best in. After doing plenty of research, I discovered I would like to attend Saginaw Valley State University with a Biochemistry major, in hopes to pursue genetic counseling as my career. As well as my academic goals, I have learned I would like to continue my softball career on the club team at SVSU rather than join a varsity team.

How did you figure out this is what you wanted to do?
During the pandemic, I spent most of my time researching different colleges. My main goal was to find the college I want to attend and then figure out what I want to do. I began to really like the idea of SVSU and started researching medical careers other than physicians. I knew what interested me and found Genetic Counseling based on my personal likings.

How long have you been researching these goals for? What inspired you to start researching them so deeply?
I started my research in my freshman year of high school. Once I had a lot of time on my hands from the pandemic, I dove deeper into the research. I had been wanting some idea as to what I wanted to do. I have always been interested in a career in the medical field. Once I found some ideas, I started job shadowing. I shadowed two career options and found neither was my fit. I plan to shadow a Genetic Counselor when possible.

Tell me more about how your past has helped influence your goals for the future!

I was born with a bilateral cleft lip. I started having surgeries when I was 5 months old. Being around this made me interested in the medical field. Growing up around my mom being a nurse also helped to spark the medical interest. I have been exposed to many different avenues of healthcare from everyday injuries to surgeries. 1 out of every 2,800 babies in the US are born with cleft lip. The fact that it happened to me interests me in helping others through genetic counseling. I have been so inspired to do whatever I can for others. Right now, one of the best ways I can help others is by donating blood. I have done this 4 times and plan to continue.

What is one piece of advice you have for others on how to stay positive?
Do what makes you happy. Everything happens for a reason but choose the things that make you happy. If you are ever torn between two things, choose the thing that makes you smile. Doing happy things help to make you a more positive and genuinely joyous person.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
One of the hardest things I’ve gone through is having surgery (in high school) during Christmas break of my sophomore year. This was my second fat graft. In this surgery, they took fat from my right hip and placed it in my lip. Two weeks later, I had to return to school with a bruised, swollen lip, a bruised hip, and a small limp. I pushed through and went to school. I stayed positive and upheld my normal personality.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Scars do not define who you are. Whether you have a physical scar from a past event, or an inner scare from hurtful words, you can spring forward.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans for the future?
In 5 years, I plan to be doing some kind of internship towards my career goal or starting school in a Graduate program.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that wasn’t in your nomination?
One of my favorite pastimes is coloring. I have many books and folders filled with completed coloring pages. No matter my mood, I will color. It helps to boost my mood after being sad or stressed, as well.
Another one of my pastimes is volunteering. I am in several clubs and committees through my school and my community where I volunteer and do what I can for others. This year, I became an officer for the NHS in my school. I am in Interact at my school, where I help volunteer for people in my community. I am in Be Nice, which helps raise awareness to mental illness. I am in Montcalm Youth Wellness Committee through my county, this is a group to raise awareness to substance abuse -- like vaping, smoking, and underage drinking.

If you could publicly present any topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?

If I were to give a presentation it would likely be on the topic of passion. Finding a passion can help make you a happier person. For me, I found that researching is my passion, which has helped me figure out I would like to be a part of the research team for my job while in college. If I could explain to people how to find their passions, I could help make people happier and more positive.

3 Things on your bucket list
Take a trip to Italy
Go hiking out west
Go on a wildlife safari

Who do you find inspiring?
I find my parents to be very inspiring. We have always been a very close family. We go on family vacations, have family board games, family movie nights, family dinners, family pool days, and much more. My parents have worked so hard to be able to have these nice things and to give my sister and I the best life possible. My parents have inspired me to work hard, help others, and be a kind, genuine person. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I aspire to be like them, have a life like this, and always be close with my family when I am older.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
I feel I am inspiring in the way I work hard in what I do. Whether it's in my schoolwork, my research, my volunteering, or softball, I always try to give 100%, and do what makes me happy. Being myself and doing what I love helps me to be happy, which I feel can be very inspiring.
