Justin Toney - Maryland Interview by Zoe D'Angelo Nomination and Photography by Jennifer Didio Photography Issue 29 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
The Nomination:Justin Toney is an incredible young man whose giving heart matches his warm smile. He jumps in with both feet ready to give his very best to all he gets involved with. He’s a lover of God, all kinds of music (he serenaded my team with Maneater from the 80s during his session!) football, lacrosse and working out. He brings a smile to the face of all who are fortunate enough to do life with him! Justin would make an awesome addition to your Inspiring Teens!
We know you are a fan of all kinds of music, but, if you had to pick one genre, what would it be? I would pick 1970s to 1980s Pop Rock. I love older music and all the talent needed to create music back then. Plus, my favorite song is Rich Girl by Hall and Oates. Also, without Pop Rock, no one would ever be able to enjoy The Guardians of the Galaxy!
Tell us about how dedicated you are when it comes to following through with events. Once I set my mind to an event I don’t stop until it succeeds. One great example would be FCA group (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). Not satisfied with our group numbers my Junior year, I tried as hard as I could to get people to come to club this year, my senior year. I managed to get the group from 3 leaders and 33 members to 10 leaders and almost 80 members.
What are some ways you get involved in your school and/or community? Until I suffered an injury, I was a 3-sport athlete playing football, lacrosse, and wrestling. Unable to continue wrestling, I help with managing for basketball and remain heavily involved in school spirit and class events such as Powder Puff.
I’ve also participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) all four years of high school and been the FCA leader since my sophomore year.
I’m also a member of the Mock Trial team at my school, a competition in Maryland teaching law, debate, and public speaking skills, as well as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. Besides school involvement, I actively participate at my church, Glyndon United Methodist in our Vespers program and youth Sunday. I also regularly attend Young Life, which consists of Christian students from several high schools. In addition, I work a part-time job several days a week at Firehouse Subs and I intern for Maryland’s fastest growing sports company, Venom Core Athletics.
If someone had to describe you in 3 words, what do you think they would say and why? People would almost certainly describe me as joyful. I am always having fun no matter where I am and if you’re with me, there’s almost never a dull moment. Next, they would say I’m strong-willed. Lastly, they would say I’m eccentric for reasons such as, playing the harmonica at film for football, to wearing crazy outfits at school, or juggling apples at lunch.
If you had the opportunity to travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I would 100% go to the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a.k.a. The Avatar Mountains. Located in China, they are the scene of one of my favorite movies, ‘Avatar’. Not only is the scenery beautiful, I would love to climb the mountains and use a glider to fly between the mountains. I think it would be one of the most amazing experiences a person could have.
Justin will be featured in Issue 29 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!
