​Nomination: Kelsey is currently a senior at Shelbyville High school in Indiana. Kelsey participates in cheerleading and show choir. When Kelsey is not at practice, she enjoys helping at the first Christian Church where she volunteers at the Salvation Army, the animal shelter, and at Christ Mount which is a camp for troubled youth. Kelsey also enjoys spending time with her friends and family. Kelsey is looking forward to attending college at Purdue University where she plans to study veterinary science.

​What do you consider your greatest achievements in high school?
I consider my amount of involvement with extracurricular and ability to hold a GPA of 3.9 one of my greatest achievements in high school.

Tell us about your cheer career. When did you get started and where are you with it now?
I started competition cheer in 5th grade then ended it in 7th grade with a trip to Vegas for nationals. After finishing competitive cheer I decided to give sideline cheer a try and fell in love immediately. Now I am in my 6th year of sideline cheer and hope to continue it when I go into college.

What do you love most about cheer and/or your cheer team?
It is hard to pick what I love most about cheer because I truly do love everything from hearing the crowd roar to my loving teammates. If I did have to choose one it is for sure the family I have gain from joining the team I truly love and trust all of the girl on my team and it is something really special.

What is a favorite accomplishment from cheer?
My favorite accomplishment from cheer is that twice a year we get to take time out of our season to help teach little girls how to cheer and become inspiring young ladies. It is a true blessing to see these girls year after year look up to us.

What is being in show choir like?
Being in show choir is unlike any other experience ever. I have bonds from my choir that is nothing like anything I have had before. We work hard all year to see it all pay off as we bring joy to people who love to watch the performing arts. Being in show choir really is an honor.

Do you have a favorite song or show you participated in?
My favorite song I participated in was my solo singing “Popular” from the musical Wicked. It was my very first solo and I will never forget the feeling of getting on that stage and giving it my very all putting all my nerves aside I was the most proud of myself in that moment.

How do you also spend your time in show choir and cheer?
I also dedicate a lot of my time helping the younger kids in show choir and cheer teaching them about not only how to be better in the activity but also how to go about high school and life lessons.

​​How did you find and why did you choose Gina Wiseman Photography for your photographer?
I found Gina through my friend Jordyn Miller who has had Gina photographic her. I chose Gina because I loved how Jordyn photos turned out and I knew she could open many opportunities for me.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience so far has been very well she makes me feel so comfortable and the photos really scream “me” I love most about Gina is how much she cares about making me feel comfortable.

Tell us about your role as a volunteer at the Salvation Army.
At the Salvation Army I help prepare and serve food for those in needs after preparing and serving the food I keep company with those who sit and eat.

What is your favorite part about volunteering at Christ Mount?
My favorite part about Christ Mount is being able to influence the campers experience and give them some one their age to talk to and really see them grow and become friends with us.

What are your roles and responsibilities volunteering at the animal shelter?
My roles and responsibilities at the animal shelter are to clean, walk, play, and feed the animals that are at the shelter I also help scout out homes for the animals.

What is a favorite memory from volunteering?
My favorite memory from volunteering is while I was at Christ Mount 2 years ago my group and the campers where playing shaving foam softball and it was the first the campers began to open us to us and start seeing us as friends and people they want to be like they started to respect us and each other I just felt like my volunteer group played a huge role in that.

What have you planned for the future?
I have planned to attend Purdue university to study veterinary science. I also plan to continue cheering at Purdue university, so I can continue to hold the ability to inspire others.

What would you like to change in the world?
I would like to help change the lack of equality in the world.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
If I was going to present a topic to my peers it would be about equality for all. I feel that many people my age and older don’t know how to treat people that are different from them. They are either sexists, racists, or homophobic. I think that people need to remember that we are all just people who deserve the same respect and rights.
