Madison Coverson - Georgia Interview by Olivia Bush Nomination and Photography by Tiffani Bray Photography Issue 32 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
The Nomination: Madison Coverson is a Class of 2020 senior at LaGrange High School. She is such an amazing student athlete with a bright future! After high school she plans to attend a four-year university to become an engineer.
What is one way that you are a leader in your school and community? I am a mentor to many of my younger peers. I am a tutor also. I volunteer in my church’s youth program to help children. I love helping at basketball camps that my school hosts. Many people in my community and schools look up to me because of the good I contribute when helping others in school and around my town.
Now, I know that you play basketball, tell me more about that. I’ve been playing basketball since I was four. My mom and dad both played basketball growing up and simply passed down the “gene.” Growing up I fell in love with basketball myself from watching my dad play and going to games with him. I grew up wanting to play in college, but that changed after visiting a college for basketball. Basketball has and will always be my favorite sport.
What is one leadership skill that you have learned from basketball? I learned how to be humble. To be a leader you don’t take all the credit or look down on someone. You don’t need recognition for all that you’ve done. I contributed a lot to my basketball team, and many times we’ve been up, and we’ve been down, but my attitude never changed. I encourage my teammates to be gracious for what we have and to go harder, but never change your attitude because what we worked so hard for can be taken.
What is one goal that you have for the future? One of my biggest goals is to graduate college with my engineering degree. Many of my family members have gone to college, so I get to see the hardships they endure. In a college journey, there are many obstacles to overcome and graduating college is a big milestone going in not knowing what to expect and conquering the challenges.
What inspired you to want to major in engineering in college? In school, math and science were my favorite subjects. I scored so well in those classes as well and my teachers would always tell me I’ll be a great engineer. I researched different types of engineering and chose the most interesting one to me- aerospace engineering.
