An American Musical: A Unique History Lesson by Ava Soloff for the Winter 2017 Issue of Inspiring Teens Magazine
Hamilton: An American Musical tells the story of a passionate, intelligent, young fellow, Alexander Hamilton. Since its Broadway debut in 2015, it has been the most popular show on Broadway. Directed and written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also portrays Hamilton in the original cast), this hip-hop rap Broadway musical was nominated for sixteen Tony Awards and walked away with eleven including Best Musical of 2015, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Score, and Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Lin- Manuel also gave his famous "Love Is Love" speech that later became very popular and inspirational during his acceptance of the Best Score award.
Before the musical, few talked about Alexander Hamilton and many thought he was a former U.S. president. "He was just a guy on the ten" explained Mr. Miranda in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Many students claim they learned more about history from the musical than they would have in school. They say it’s more in-depth and appealing than a dry history lesson that you would typically find in a textbook because it is a hip-hop rap Broadway hit musical. Many teachers also enjoy it and often recommend that students listen to and/or see the musical.
At first, I was a little skeptical about liking this. My parents listened to it quite often, so I decided to give it a shot. From the first song to the last, I fell in love with it. The lyrics are so catchy and the songs are great to jam to. Both the original cast and the understudies in the show are very diverse and they prove that anyone can be anything. The cast ranges from Asian to African American plus many more. Lin himself is from Puerto Rico. I was fortunate enough to receive tickets to see it and recommend that everyone at least listen to the music. I guarantee that you, like me, will be inspired and will make it your mission to get tickets to see the show! “I’m past patiently waitin’ I’m passionately smashin’ every expectation. Every action’s an act of creation!” —Hamilton, “My Shot”
