Maya Martin-Cubbage

Picture

Maya Martin-Cubbage – Maryland
Nomination & Photography by Erica Land Photography
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Maya Martin-Cubbage is one inspiring teen! Whether Maya is conducting community service projects as a Fierce Dance Team- Dance Hope Cure Ambassador to raise awareness for childhood cancer or raise funds for a local nonprofit; sharing her passion and love for dance by spending her Saturday mornings teaching dance to preschoolers; proudly representing her school or the Latino Student Fund - where she is a scholar - as an ambassador as well; increasing awareness and sensitivity for adoptees using her personal experience and voice as an international adoptee from Guatemala; or advocating for social justice- she just knocks our socks off!

What are some of the service projects you've done?
I have been a Therapeutic Recreation Mainstream/Inclusion Companion volunteer, helping children with special needs participate in summer camps. I have raised funds for and awareness about childhood cancer. (A lot of people don’t know that cancer affects children differently than adults, and more research is needed on less toxic therapies for them). In Guatemala, I did different projects- such as installing a stove in a family’s home so they can cook for themselves; constructing a bed so another family didn’t have to sleep on the floor; distributing shoes to families that had outgrown their last pair, and others.

What is some advice you may have that has helped you get through some tough times with anxiety?
To this day, I am figuring out how to help myself with my anxiety. About two years ago, I found a love for writing songs. I have always loved writing lyrics, but now it's becoming more than that. Listening to music is calming too. I have a support system of adults I trust who have known me for a while and that I feel safe talking to. Even with these tools and help I still struggle with anxiety, but I am always working on it and will continue to do so.

Who do you find inspiring?
My 3rd-grade teacher Brittani London, whom I knew as “Ms.O” at the time. My first year at my current school was in 3rd grade, and it was also her first year there. She genuinely loves her students and turns her lessons into memorable ones - which I have always found inspiring, especially now that I teach young children (dance).

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
“Believe in yourself”, “find your inner confidence”, or “be your true self”. Those are all phrases I have heard multiple times- and are important thoughts to have. My personal addition to these is “Don't ‘copy and paste’ because there will always be mistakes.” I coined that quote about four years ago when I tried to follow too much advice in general, trying to be too many people at once. Teens tend to listen to influencer’s or friend's videos, posts, quotes, and more. But when you follow others’ advice, you won’t always get the same outcome as they did.

What do you wish others knew about the LGBTQ community and their families?
Over the years, the world has been more accepting of the LGBTQ community. I want people to know that sharing personal information about anything LGBTQ-related can be very difficult. Not all families will be accepting of the news when people come out, but those who come out cannot change for others. LGBTQ families can be like any family, but unique, which is okay because being different is better than being like everyone else.

What is your family like, and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
My family is extraordinary and one of a kind. Everyone contributes something that makes our family different. My Mami Monica is our organizer, and my Mama Cindy is the creative one. My brother Darien keeps everyone on their toes and loves to make us laugh. My dogs, Coco and Sparkle, are also unique - Coco is visually impaired, and Sparkle is protective. I stand out through my perseverance. If I want something I go after it. I wanted to be a better dancer and student, so I concentrated more. In my family, nobody “fits in.” We go with our flow!

Sara DiVittorio – North Carolina
Nomination and Photography by Words & Pictures by Jeannie DeSena
Issue 63 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination - Sara DiVittorio strives for excellence as an athlete and student and has fun in the process. An Open Champion Irish dancer with the Walsh Kelley School in Charlotte, North Carolina, she earns high placements at regional and international competitions, and she shares her talent by performing in the community. She also enjoys playing rec soccer and basketball. This tenth-grader gets her point across as a member of the Charlotte Catholic High School debate team. Sara takes her commitments seriously but is also quick to share a laugh with her family and friends. She is truly an inspiring teen.

Tell us about your dance career. How did you get started and where are you at with it now?
I have been dancing with the Walsh Kelley School for almost my whole life, starting when I was 3 years old and I fell in love with it. My mom and her sisters all danced growing up and my cousin danced before me, so my family already knew about the Irish dancing world. Over the years, I have climbed through the levels and am proud to say I am now ranked 9th in North America and have competed in the Irish Dancing World Championships twice now against the top 1% of all Irish Dancers around the world.

What do you love most about dance?
The thing I love most about dance is the community. I have met some of my best friends through Irish dance and every dance class and competition, I'm always having fun. My dance school has become like a home to me and my dance teacher, Aine Walsh Kelley, is like my second mom. So, even when a result doesn't go my way or I'm just not having a great day, I always have the absolute best people there supporting me.

What do you think most non dancers don't realize about dancing/dancers?
I think that non dancers don't understand the physical strength that dancing takes. We are not only running through our dances over and over again, but we are doing planks and squats and like a million other things that get me sore just thinking about it. Most dancers around my level are practicing almost every day for several hours and even putting extra practice, workouts, and stretches in at home, so dance is by no chance any less physically draining than any other sport.

What is a favorite accomplishment from dance?
My favorite dance moment was when I placed 7th at the US Nationals. It was my first Nationals since COVID and I wasn't sure how I was going to do, but I tried my best and at awards, it paid off. The announcer called me up for the top 10 and I ran on the stage crying and hugging my friends who were up there with me. Not only was I crying hysterically, but I looked out and my mom, my teachers, and my friends were all crying too. It was one of the best days of my life.

What is an experience you've had through dance that you wouldn't gotten to have if you weren't a dancer?
I have gotten to travel to so many cool places. I've traveled all over the US for competitions and last April, I got to travel to Belfast to compete in the World Championships. Coming up this July, I will compete at the Worlds in Montreal. I'm just so lucky to have been able to see such fabulous places.

How did you find and why did you choose Words & Pictures by Jeannie DeSena for your photographer?
Mrs. DeSena is an Irish dance mom at another dance school in Charlotte and an incredible photographer. She reached out to my mom and I for a Christmas photoshoot because she was looking for a dancer with either a red or green dress and at the time, I had both, so it worked out perfectly.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Mrs. DeSena was amazing. I had never really done a photoshoot before, so I was a little nervous, but she comforted me in no time and got me laughing and smiling during the whole thing. I loved all the little props that she had and had a great time throwing candy canes up in the air, but I might have dropped a few once or twice.

Tell us about your soccer team. What is your favorite memory with them?
I love playing soccer because it is a very low stress activity for me. With just playing in a rec league, all the pressure is off, so in general, every practice and game is incredible because I just get to go out there and do my best, all while having fun.

How long have you been playing basketball, what is your position, and what is a favorite accomplishment with the sport?
I have been playing in church league basketball since I was in 3rd grade. I play point guard because I'm pretty short. My favorite thing about basketball is that my dad is my coach and I get to spend time with him. Every time we win a game, we both get to celebrate together afterwards.

What is the most interesting topic you've had for debate? What side were you on? What was your argument?
I compete in the Public Forum division of Debate, so I I compete in the Public Forum division of Debate, so I compete with my partner and one of my best friends, Nadine. The cool and kind of hard thing about debate is that before you go in, you have to be ready to defend both sides of the argument. My favorite topic and the most challenging was one about cryptocurrency last year. It is incredibly confusing, but I learned a ton preparing for that case and now I sound really smart when talking about it with adults, which, to me, is one of the best parts.

Picture

What is a tradition or special activity at your school that you love to participate in?
I love all the sports events at my school, Charlotte Catholic High School. We have an absolutely amazing student section with fun themes for every game. So, on game nights, I go all out with tutus and ribbons and glitter and then go and cheer my heart out with all of my friends. It's so fun that I normally lose my voice the day after.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
I don't get much free time because I love being busy, but when I do, you can normally find me curled up on the couch in my PJs, probably watching FRIENDS. Even though I've seen it like a million times, it never fails to make me laugh.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I think that the most inspiring thing about me is my work ethic. With whatever I’m doing, I’m always sure to put 110% into it, especially with dance. I’m in the dance studio anywhere from 3-7 days a week and it’s really a full year sport. It can be a lot, but I’m always striving to do my best dancing in every single practice.

What else would you like to talk about?
I’m also a kid that loves to be on the go! I’m always doing something whether it’s dance, school, debate, or like a million other things that I pack my schedule with. My friends and family always laugh when I tell them that I want to get back to dance after taking like a 1 day break. I just love having something to do!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
Something that I’m very passionate about is the awareness of dance as a sport. A lot of people don’t understand the work and the many hours that go into dancing. They assume we just get dressed up all pretty and prance around the stage, but it’s way more than that. In the dancing world, I have personally witnessed the blood, sweat, and tears that each dancer puts into each practice and each competition, so anyone that tries to discredit dancing hasn’t really seen what dancing truly is.

Picture
Image taken by a family member

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
My most difficult accomplishment was qualifying for Worlds. I worked for years, trying to get my dancing good enough to hopefully find myself in one of those rare spots.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
My advice would be to do everything you do with 100% of your energy, even small practices or homework assignments. You're not going to do your greatest unless you put your very best effort into it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I hope to be in a college that I absolute love on my way to becoming an orthodontist. I'm not sure what college yet, but I'll figure that one out in a few years.
What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
I absolutely love listening to music by Taylor Swift. She is definitely my favorite artist and I probably know every single word to every single one of her songs,

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?
I'm good at pool/billiards. We have a pool table in my house, so I'm constantly playing either with my family or alone whenever I'm bored, but over time I've gotten pretty good.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three bucket list items for me are definitely visiting Greece, seeing a show on Broadway, and meeting Taylor Swift. Although, I'm not sure that last one's going to happen.

Tell us about the Drill Team. What do you do in it and what do you love most about it?
Drill Team is made up of about 30 girls right now and we learn different routines/dances that we perform and take to competition against other schools/teams. I love learning the different routines and styles of dances.

What does your role as the Team Captain mean to you?
It means so much because I love to teach and lead. It means accepting responsibility for my team and setting the standard of what it means to be a great teammate.

What have you learned about yourself while in this role?
I have learned that I am mentally, physically, and emotionally stronger than I thought I was. I learned that it's a huge responsibility to be a leader/role model. I've learned that I can't please everyone, but I will always strive to do what's best for my team as a whole.

What has your soccer career been like?
I started playing AYSO when I was 5 years old. It has been really fun and challenging. I am currently still playing soccer any chance I get.
My favorite accomplishment with soccer is making the All-Star team every year. Soccer has helped me build my confidence and helped inspire me to be a team player on and off the field.

What is Native American Ribbon Dancing and how did you get involved?
It is a Traditional dance that is performed by the women of the Paiute Tribe. I got involved because I wanted to be in touch with my cultural roots and traditions. I am a proud member of the Bishop Paiute Tribe and it's important for me to keep our traditions alive to pass on to future generations.

Tell us about your strong passion for dancing and teaching others to dance.
My strong passion for dancing comes from within and makes me feel strong and connected to other dancers. When I dance, I feel happy with no negativity weighing me down. When I teach others to dance it makes me feel influential. I hope to inspire others to feel confident about themselves and dance.

What is your favorite subject to study in school and what is the most fascinating thing you've learned so far this year?
My favorite subject to study in school right now is Science, and everything I've learned this year has been interesting honestly. My Science teacher Mr. Willy is really fascinating.

How did you find and why did you choose Michael McDermott Photography for your photographer?
Michael McDermott took photos for my family, and I loved them. I also follow him on social media and admire all of his work. Mike made the photo session exciting, and comfortable the entire time. I feel like Mike is very dedicated to getting the best shots. You can tell by every one of his photos, how much pride he puts into his photography. Michael McDermott Photography is #1.

Picture
Photography by Michael McDermott Photography

What else would you like to talk about?

I would like to talk about my heritage/pride in being a Paiute Native American.

What is a favorite custom or tradition you practice from your heritage?
Ribbon dancing and dancing in the Powwow for all the people. For the young, elderly, healthy and ill, and anyone that can't. I love to dance for the people that surround me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would present the topic of leadership. I would discuss my experience with becoming the Captain of Drill Team at my middle school and how it affected me negatively and positively in my life. I am so passionate about dancing and teaching, so it was my goal to become a leader in Drill Team. When I was announced as Captain, I couldn't be happier. The happy feeling quickly faded when I learned how hard it was going to be to teach/lead other peers that weren't as happy about my new position. It showed me that not everyone will celebrate my success, but it also taught me to be strong, confident, & humble all at the same time. Leadership is a big responsibility.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I am an energetic, strong minded dancing Paiute girl with big dreams, that comes from a small town. I am the oldest sibling in my family, and I take this position very seriously because I know I have younger siblings looking up to me, and I want to lead by example.
I am full of faith and a strong believer in giving it my all in anything I do. I like to stay humble and thankful for my life. Family means everything to me because they are my biggest supporters and inspire me to be my best every day.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
I would like to talk about how grateful I am to be given the opportunity to be in this magazine coming from such a small town.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I work with special needs kids during their classroom time as well as being a part of our school’s student council and teaching young kids tumbling classes.

What led you to working with special needs?
My mom has taught special needs kids for years and would bring me to work with her sometimes, so I got to see firsthand how difficult everyday things, that we take for granted, are for them. It’s a very special thing to build those connections and to see them grow and embrace their disabilities.

What do you love most about it?
I love forming friendships. My favorite thing is to build those friendships because it makes their special moments so much more special because they share them with you. Their perseverance truly inspires me everyday.

What have you learned about yourself in the process?
I’ve learned that I really rely on bonds and friendships so being able to have those relationships has really helped me grow as a person in every way.

What is your role in the student council?
I am a part of our leadership council, so I help plan events fundraisers, and our annual STRUT week.

What has been a favorite thing you've gotten to help plan in school council?
STRUT week has for sure been my favorite. There were so many fun things throughout the week but knowing the end result and that we were helping raise money for someone who really needed it was better than everything.

What has been a favorite memory teaching young kids tumbling?
I have so many laughable memories from this job. Kids can be so funny, but my favorite memory is a little 3 year old looking me in the eyes and saying “Wow you really let yourself go this week.” Nothing is more humbling than a pre-schooler telling you how bad you look.

What has been the best part of your senior year so far, and what are you most looking forward to next before you graduate?
My favorite part thus far has been homecoming week. I love when our community comes together for events, so homecoming was definitely my kind of week. I am really looking forward to my last Prom. Our junior class is fantastic at planning so I know it’s going to be so fun.

How did you find and why did you choose Laci James Photography LLC for your photographer?
My best friend did her senior pictures through Laci and I loved the way they turned out so when I heard about her ambassadorship I was so excited.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about being involved as much as I can and striving to be able to be the best positive role model that I can be.

What are some of the things you are involved in that are not mentioned above?
I am in National Honor Society as well, so I do a lot of community service. I get the great opportunity to be constantly involved in my community and I absolutely love it.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
The importance of mental health because I think it is crucial to have accessible resources in order to help teens and young adults in this hard, trying, part of their lives.

What do you think is the hardest thing teens face right now, and what is a solution for it?
I think the biggest thing teens face right now is social media and comparison. It is so difficult see girls on social media websites and not feel like your less than. I think the best way to solve this is for people to stop photoshopping and be real on social media. Instead of doing away with social media we just need to shift our mindsets about it.

Who inspires you?
My mom is the most inspirational person in my life. Seeing her patience and perseverance in her job is the most inspiring thing to me.

Maggie Spraker – South Carolina
Nomination by Heather Spraker
Photography by Deanna Webber
Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Maggie Spraker is an amazing young lady, laser-focused on her future. Her incredible work ethic, including her passion for her education, perseverance in track and field, while maintaining a part-time job, are awe-inspiring. She manages all of these aspects of her life, while also being an amazing human being.
She is a friend to all with deep compassion for others. She's a shoulder to cry on and a cheerleader for other's accomplishments.
This year, Maggie received her second academic award at school and received a promotion at work. She amazes us with her ability managing school, work, and extracurricular activities.

Tell us about your work ethic and how it helps you stand out.
I am an extremely hard worker. I like to put my best out there in all aspects of my life, and I have seen great results. I recently got promoted to a trainer at work because I always stay busy and put in 100 percent effort. I have noticed that people look at me differently because of my work ethic. In school, I get asked to be a leader on projects, and my teachers look at my work as an example for the class. Establishing an excellent work ethic has been rewarding in my school life.

What about education do you love so much?
I have a natural curiosity for things and what I love the most about education is learning new things. It does not matter what the subject is; learning new things is fun to me. I also love that education is challenging. Some subject matter does not make sense and is frustrating, but putting in the work and figuring it out can be most rewarding.

What is your favorite thing you are learning in your senior year?
My favorite thing I am learning so far is Calculus. Math has always been easier for me until this year. That might sound weird when I say it is my favorite thing I am learning. It has been stressful and, at points, hard to understand, but I love the challenge and how it is different from other math I have taken. I know that when the course is over, I will be glad I took it because I have been learning something new daily.

When did you get started in track and field, and where are you at with it now?
I started track and field during my sophomore year of high school. I started it because of my best friend, and I am happy I did. I started with the events Discus and Shot Put; now, as a senior, my main event is Javelin. Javelin has been an amazing experience because it is technique based and requires much work outside usual track practice. The season has not yet started, but I am preparing and looking forward to my last season in high school.

What is a favorite accomplishment in the sport?
My favorite accomplishment is by far hitting my personal record in Javelin. It was a new skill set, and I felt frustrated because I did not get it right away. I worked hard all season and finally started to understand the fundamentals of the sport. I wanted to hit 100 feet with everything in me, and when I finally did, it felt amazing. I will never forget this moment in my athletic career. I am hoping this year to push further in my capabilities.

Picture
Photography by Heather Spraker
What is your part time job and what have you learned about the world in general working there?
My part-time job is as a Host at one of the local restaurants. I have worked there for seven months and learned many life lessons. One thing that I have learned is that patience is a virtue. That value might seem small, but it holds tremendous weight. People are not always lovely in the real world. You could get yelled at and have to acknowledge restraint and not respond. This situation is where patience is a strength because no one wants to be yelled at, but sometimes the best thing to do is remain calm.

What have you learned about yourself?
I have learned that I am much stronger than I give myself credit for in situations. My experiences in life have made me the person I am today. Some experiences, although bad, have given me insight and wisdom, which I feel are helpful in my life.

Tell us about your academic award and what it took to achieve it.
My academic award is something that I hold dear to me. I always have focused on my future and made sure I do my best to get the grades I want. I have put much work into my grades, and getting an award makes it all worthwhile. I have spent so much time and effort in my classes, so it feels great to be recognized.

What will you miss most about high school once you graduate?
What I will miss the most about high school are my amazing friends. I have made the most amazing friends and not being able to see them every day will be something I will miss the most. My friends and I are all going to different colleges a few hours away from each other, so I think it is a mix of sad and happy. I am glad that we will all experience our different colleges, but it's bittersweet that we will not share it side by side.

What are you most looking forward to in the months to come?
I look forward to spending time with my friends and deciding what college I attend. I have received acceptance to my top colleges, which I am so ecstatic about, but that is why I am having difficulty deciding which one to attend. I am hoping I will make my decision early in 2023. I am excited to go out with friends and attend some school events for seniors that are also happening soon.

Photography by Deanna Webber

How did you find and why did you choose Deanna Webber Photography for your photographer?
I found Deanna from a few school friends that went through her a few months prior. I saw how amazing their photos were and knew I wanted to reach out to her. I messaged her on Instagram, and she was so kind. She gave me all the information I needed, which is why it was such an easy decision to pick her. I loved the kindness and excitement she had toward her work.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was nothing short of amazing. I was nervous about having my photos done because I had never had professional photos done before. Deanna made me feel at ease and was my hype woman the entire session. We joked around and had so much fun with the different poses and outfits I picked. She even implemented my dog and my truck, two things I wholeheartedly wanted in my photos. She listened to what I wanted in a session and made it happen.

3 Things on your bucket list
I want to travel outside the United States, get my first tattoo, and swim with sharks. I have never traveled outside of the US, which is something I have wanted to do for as long as I can remember. I mainly want to go somewhere in Europe. I want a few tattoos for those who have significantly impacted my life. The last one Is a big fear of mine, but one that I want to face. I have been scared of sharks for a long time, but I find them beautiful.

Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Max Stovern of Webb City. He has faced a tough senior year breaking his wrist in the first five minutes of the first football game and then as soon as he got his cast off he sprained his knee. He did not miss one single practice. He has kept his GPA up which is currently 3.7 and works hard every day to get better. When he was out with his knee injury he still went to the gym every day after practice and worked as hard as he could. He loves football and he loves doing his best. He has been a true inspiration to me (his Mom) as well as many other athletes & students who see that he never gave up. Playoffs begin soon & he will be ready to go!!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I have good drive & work ethic. I have never given up when things get tough. I have also stood up for kids getting bullied. I am hoping to get into the University of Arkansas to continue my education.

What would you most like to talk about in your interview?
Going through multiple unexpected injuries & never giving up. Finding ways to work & play in my cast was hard. But, I succeeded & scored 3 touchdowns & rushed for 143 yards with my cast on! When I sprained my LCL I still continued to work even through the pain. Dedication is important to me.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
Respect, work ethic & responsibility. I hated watching fellow players disrespect coaches & teammates. I would like to talk about how respect & work ethic are our responsibility as student athletes.

Nomination by Sarah Barfield
Photography by Jennifer Farmer, JL Farmer Photography
Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Lily is an e-book author, FFA champion market hog showman, and agriculture advocate. Lily plans to be the first person in her family to have a career in the agriculture industry when she becomes an animal nutritionist. Lily was chosen as one of 38 students nationwide and the only female in Georgia to win a Lindner Scholarship in 2021. Lily operates a small business in animal care called Lily's Pet-cations. Lily has been an honor student for four years, she was an FFA officer, and she is captain of the swim team. Lily also volunteers with animal rescues regularly.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
This year, I was chosen as the Heisman High School Scholarship winner for my school. In 2020, I was awarded the title of Miss Central Georgia's Outstanding Teen as part of the Miss America organization where I helped raise over $5,000 for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and I continued to advocate for agriculture through my social impact initiative. I was also an ambassador for the Georgia Peach Industry for two years, and I was honored to be invited to the Georgia Capitol as a guest of Representative Robert Dickey, one of our local peach farmers.

What else would you like to talk about in your interview?
My favorite Leadership Development Event (LDE) in FFA is public speaking because I get to talk about the importance of agriculture. I also enjoy competing in the Agriculture Education and Veterinary Science Career Development Events (CDEs). I have been a member of the 4-H Competition Shotgun Team since 9th grade. When I'm at home, I love to bake desserts for my family, spend time with my dog, and cuddle up in my bed to watch cartoons.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I am most passionate about the importance of agriculture. I like to eat, do you? If you do, then you should also be concerned about the importance of agriculture in America and around the globe. Did you know that by the year 2030, there will be an estimated 9 billion people in the world who will need agriculture to sustain life? The agriculture industry provides shelter, clothing, and food for all people, and we literally cannot live without it. It is essential that more students and adults commit to a career in agriculture and help create a sustainable future.

She plays several position on the team which makes her a vital asset and depended upon for her team’s success. Another one of her great qualities is her ability to get along and work with others. She has great school spirit! This young lady is a leader in all aspects of life. I do not want to forget to mention that she is a part-time colleges students and works two part-time jobs. Devin Villasenor

Picture

Devin Villasenor – Kentucky
Nomination by Ashlee Heaberlin
Photography by Everafter Photography
Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Devin is a straight A honor roll student. He goes above and beyond in everything he does. He works hard in school and on the soccer field. The last 2 & 1/2 years have been hard with injuries to both his ACL’s. Devin didn’t let that stop him from working hard and getting back on the field for senior night. While out of the game he still went to practices and games, supporting his teammates. Through the ups and downs he continued to volunteer as much as possible by giving back and helping at the elementary school he once attended.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I’m going to be a first generation college student and I plan to attend Morehead State University. Throughout my middle and high school years I have been getting volunteer hours in and going to programs to help me get ready for college. This is going to be a new experience for me, and I hope to inspire other teens out there who are thinking about being the first to go to college. Do as I did and try your best in school and apply for things like the Inspiring Teens Magazine in hopes that you can get help through college as well.

What else would you like to talk about in your interview?
I would like to talk about my time at GSP (Governors Scholar Program) over the past summer. You can apply for this as a Junior at your school and I highly encourage it. This is a life changing experience for me that helped me get connected with colleges and get a taste of what college would be like. While there I learned how important it was to give back and be a part of your community. I hope to be in this magazine in hopes to inspire people in my hometown and become someone to look up to.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The topic I would cover is the word community. This word has many meanings whenever you look it up in the dictionary or online. But the real meaning of community has to be learned by putting yourself out there. By building a sense of community with the people around you, you will always have people with you and it will bring about a family like bond with the people in your life. The meaning of this word became clear to me while at my time at GSP and I will be forever grateful for the word community.

Bella McDonald

Bella McDonald – Tennessee
Nomination & Photography by Ashlea Riden - Ashlea Brooke Photography
Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Bella joined my class of 2023 senior team this year and has been so much fun getting to know her. She is such an inspiration not only to me, her photographer, but to her family, peers, teachers, and community. She is on her schools softball team and plays on a select travel team as well, where she has won world series championships! She is incredibly smart and part of the National Honor society. Bella is not only inspiring because she is an amazing student and athlete, but also because of her faith, kindness, and leadership qualities. She truly is beautiful inside and out! Overall, Bella is outgoing, kind, dedicated, and gives 125% in everything she does. She is a total inspiration for any young girl to look up to! Bella is a true ray of sunshine, the sweetest girl and just radiates positivity!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I balance school, work, softball, clubs, and still have time to hang out with friends and family. I am a leader and I try to be the best example for people to look up to. Especially my younger girls, such as my younger sister. I want to be the best for her.

What else would you like to talk about in your interview?
Even though I'm an athlete, I love art. It helps me express things I can't get out with words. I learned to love it a few years ago when one of the best teachers I've ever had introduced me to it. I have improved so much since then. I am looking to pursue a minor in art. I have many pieces that are special to me and I'd love to share them.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
One topic I can talk about for days is the independent ability of women. Everyday women are told they aren't strong enough or don't work as hard as a man. But my mom has shown me that women are just as capable and strong as men. This would be my topic, because I was raised by and taught to be a strong independent woman. I am very capable of doing things on my own and having my own successes. Young women especially are shot down because nobody believes in them and their abilities. But I believe women are very powerful and can do anything they want when putting their minds to it.

Alexius Smith

Picture

Alexius Smith – Illinois
Nomination by Fallon
Photography by Sarah Jane Photography
Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination Revised by Alexius: Hi I am Alexius Smith! I mainly go by Lexi. I am 18 years old and I am apart of many community organizations. I am the host of a podcast funded by Young Leaders in Action. I am also a part of a violence prevention group called SIMP that helps raise awareness about violence going on in my community. I have also been promoted to the Chair of the Action Team at Young Leaders in Action. With my next accomplishment I am apart of YAC with CGTI. I have also been awarded volunteer of the week by the state of IL, signed by the governor.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
The next inspiring thing I will like to discuss is that I am also apart or SADD at my school. I have been on TV with the news advocating for violence prevention due to my father passing away due to gun violence in front of my old home. I never wanted a kid to go through this so I do the best I can to prevent that by helping in the community. I also got a certificate in litigation at Brandeis University at the age of 17 because I am an aspiring lawyer. I am taking criminal justice classes in order to be a lawyer at my local community college and I am currently in my second year. I have also been on honor roll for all four years.

What else would you like to talk about?
Other things I will like to talk about in my interview is what made me the way I am now , I also will like to talk about my goals in life. The last thing is I want to talk about pressing issues that are going on and ways a community can effectively address them.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present a topic about dating safety. The reason why I would present this topic is because there is many risks within relationships and a lot of feelings involved. I have been in my relationship for 14 months. It gets easier, not because we ignore each other, it is because we both know it’s us two versus the problem and not us two against each other.

Photography by Candi Benek Photography

Tell us about your friendship with Faith who nominated you.
Faith is my adopted sister; she has supported me in so many ways, been there for me always, and helped me in so many ways.

What are you enjoying most about your senior year?
Being in my senior year allows me to reflect on my progress and be really proud of myself for how far I have gone, which is what I am most looking forward to. Moreover, I like being able to feel pleased with myself when I enroll in college and anticipate earning my degree.
If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you and what would you be doing? In a house full of cats, you would find me. Cats make fantastic pets because they are constantly willing to play or snuggle.

How did you find and why did you choose Candi Benek Photography as your photographer?
My photographer is someone I met on Instagram, and I chose her because I thought her photos were beautiful and I had heard nothing but good things about working with her.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was fantastic; she made sure I was comfortable and collaborated with me to ensure that I was happy with the results. The fact that photo session lasts all day and takes place in various settings.

Picture
Photography by Candi Benek Photography

What are some inspiring qualities about you?
Some inspiring qualities about me include my adoption, my unconditional love for animals, my extreme organization, and my excellent time management. is something I really enjoyed.

Tell us your adoption story.
Since my birth parents were unable to provide for me at the time, I was adopted at birth, thus it is very vital to me to have parents who can. Even though it's not like other adoptions, it remains a significant part of my life. I learned about a year ago that my birth father didn't find out my birth mom was pregnant until I was around 10 months old, I got the opportunity to meet him and my half-sister was quite emotional for me. I wish I could have been there to witness her development and be able to be there for her.

What is your family like and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
My family is incredibly helpful and considerate. We get along well and can always find humor in one another. When I like to be alone myself, that's when I stand out.

What do you wish other people would know?
I wish more people understood how important it is to persevere no matter how challenging life becomes because you are here for a reason that you might not be able to perceive.

What do you love most about being around animals?
They give you happiness and affection without conditions, which I adore. They can also always make you smile.

Do you have pets? Tell us about them.
I do have two dogs and two cats. The two dogs, Apollo and Storm, are Siberian huskies. They adore the snow—we get a lot of it in Pennsylvania—and are incredibly loving. My two cats, Mateo and Danny, are very affectionate and purr loudly. Mateo has a lot of energy, which I can understand because orange cats are typically hyperactive, but when he's calmed down, he loves to cuddle and give me kisses.

Picture
Photography by Candi Benek Photography

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present a topic about cats not only because they are loving but because they bring so much joy, giggles, smiles, and cuddles. Most people don't prefer cats over dogs which is weird because I sure do.

What are your favorite organizational tips for others?
Some of them include always keeping track of time, being organized so that you can locate things much faster, and always keeping a whiteboard or writing down where you put things.

Tell us your time management routine.
I always have my alarms set and know what I'm doing and where I need to be the night before. I am proficient in prioritize.

Jillian Herman

Picture

Jillian Herman – Texas
Nomination & Photography by Angie Read Photography
Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Jillian Herman desires to help others in the highest degree. She has logged hundreds of community service hours in the Houston area since she was 11 years old. She has helped feed tens of thousands of people at food banks, provided for hundreds of homeless and widows, and kept a great attitude through all of it. On top of this, she is also the president of Technology Students Association, a 4-year Tiger Bell dancer at KCHS, an active NHS member, a 7-year member of KUMC Youth ministry and choir, and will graduate high school with her Associates degree! Jillian is the future we should strive towards!

Photography by Angie Read Photography

Tell us about your community service hours and how you got started.
Most of my service projects were through my church, KUMC. I have attended this church since I was three months old. We start group services in the sixth grade and continue through our senior year.

What has been your favorite service project?
My favorite service project was when we surprised a long-time church member. We had built him and his family a new fence around their backyard. He had served many hours alongside our youth and spent multiple hours putting others' needs before his.

Which service project have you spent the most time with, and what did it entail?
My lengthiest project would be the previous one I mentioned. Building an entire fence took our teams about three days to complete. We hauled fence boards, posts, and other needed tools and materials. We had multiple teams rotating jobs; some were cutting fence boards and leveling posts, and others were assembling all the parts. Finishing the fence took about three days, from 7 am to 2 pm.

What leadership opportunities have you had through volunteering?
I have been on our leadership team since I became an upperclassman. As the name implies, I lead our younger kids, such as the middle schoolers, in small group discussions and bible studies. Throughout our summer, we have service camps where I have been paired up with groups of middle schoolers to help lead them through our team's service projects.

What are your responsibilities as president of the Technology Students Association?
As president of the TSA, I have many responsibilities. We compete in February, so we must register for our competitions before Christmas break. Since TSA is entirely student-run, I am responsible for all students' registrations, payments, and hosting meetings, socials, and fundraisers. I have a team of officers that help me in many ways, but I am currently trying to rebuild the club to be as big as it used to be before covid, so I am teaching the other officers so they can take over smoothly when I graduate.

What has been a favorite accomplishment with this organization?
TSA is a nationally recognized organization, so there are a lot of competitors when it comes to competing. Our robotics team had competed at the regional level and been able to advance to the state level. Our robotics team got very close to the semi-finals in the state competition but was just barely knocked out. They ended up placing 13th out of 58. Supporting my robotics team and seeing them advance was a huge accomplishment for our organization.

What has been a favorite activity you've participated in with the NHS?
My NHS branch is very active in our school and community. I was given a chance to volunteer at our end-of-the-season baseball banquet. This activity was my favorite because I got to serve a team that does so much for our school. Also, celebrating their victories from the past season was a fantastic ending to an excellent season.

What is your favorite memory with KUMC Youth Ministry and choir?
Every year the KUMC youth choir goes on tour to sing. We have been to many different states and visited many fabulous places. My favorite experience was my first tour; we went to Missouri that summer when my older brother graduated from boot camp in Missouri! Our whole choir could come to my brother's graduation and surprise him after the ceremony. Seeing my brother in shock from everyone who attended just for him was heartwarming.

What are you loving most about your senior year?
My senior year has been an adventure; even though I'm only halfway done, I already have many fun memories. My favorite thing would be going to football games with my dance team. The games were so much fun, and cheering on my team was uplifting.

Picture
Photography by Angie Read Photography

How did you find and why did you choose Angie Read Photography as your senior photographer?
Angie Read was also the photographer for a friend a year older than me. My friend had referred a few other girls and me to Angie before the end of our junior years. I love Angie's style and how she can adjust to fit what others want to see. Angie is genuine and supports all of her seniors through our decisions.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Angie's team of seniors has been excellent. I love being able to take pictures with old friends and new friends; also, being able to volunteer with them brings me joy.

What is the best part of being on her team?
The best part of being on Angie's team is how much effort she puts in. She spends so much time finding places for us to take pictures, getting us partnerships, and helping us feel comfortable. She also gives us her all when taking pictures and also editing them.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
My most inspiring action would be to complete my associate's degree while still in high school. While starting that venture at a young age, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity. Obtaining a college degree while still in high school, alongside extracurriculars, has been one of my most challenging achievements. Having this degree will help me continue with my education ahead of my peers and be able to contribute to the community through my work sooner.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about my experience on my dance team for the past four years. While on my dance team, I have been supported by my directors, teammates, and admins. My director once shared how she wanted to be a teacher and was told that she would never change someone’s life, and I can firmly say that is false. My director has been there for me since day one of being on the team. She is an absolute inspiration to me and many other young dancers. I could not be the strong young woman I am today without her.

Picture

Tell us about your dance career. When did you get started, what types of dance do you study, etc.
I started dancing when I was four years old. I took a short break to do cheer but shortly got back into dance in middle school. When freshman year came, I tried out for my school's dance and drill team. I have been a member of the Tiger Belles for four years now. We perform at football games and are transitioning into contest season.

What is your dance team like at KCHS, and what do you love most about being part of this group?
Being a part of the dance team has made me not only a better dancer but also a better person. My director has worked hard with our whole team to build us into a strong, independent woman. My director has supported me through all four years on the team, through all my tough decisions and struggles. My teammates are like sisters, they are great supporters, and we love to hang out outside of dance.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would love to talk about my future with my peers. My future is a topic I have spent many nights thinking and dreaming over. Whether that be college, work, or my family goals, I could go on for hours. I have huge dreams for my future career, and I share those plans in hopes of my friends and family upholding me to my goals in the future. Having my peers know about my goals helps keep me in check with myself and keeps me motivated during hard times.

3 Things on your bucket list
Three things on my bucket list are, visiting the Choctaw cultural center, getting my doctorate, and traveling to South Korea. Since I am a Choctaw native, I would like to see our cultural center and learn more about my ancestors. Graduating with my doctorate has always been a dream of mine, and traveling to South Korea would be a fun and educational experience. It would allow me to learn about cultures other than my own.

Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination Revised by Nicole: I’m truly honored to be nominated as an inspiring teen! I am an extremely hard worker, working with my father full time as well as running my own dog sitting business. I have done school online for three years now while working and am now preparing for graduation.
Picture
Photography by Silver Sparrow Photography

Tell us about your work ethic and why it's important to you.
I grew up in a single father household mainly and watching him work and buy his own business showed me at a young age the importance of a good work ethic to survive. I started working at 12 years old and it not only helps me provide for my future it made me relived knowing I am going to be ok maintaining any job I chose to pursue.

What is the most satisfying thing about a job well done?
The most satisfying thing about a job well done for me is knowing no matter how much I didn’t want to do it I did it and nobody can take that away from me.

What work do you do with your father?
My father bought a dog grooming business when I was seven and I began working with him freshman year. I started full time shortly afterwards and have decided to pursue further. Now he’s currently help mentor me and teach me about grooming more.

What do you love best about it?
I love getting to work in a comfortable environment with my best friend in the world. Getting to put music on have a dance break and laugh while your working is crucial to me.

Picture
Photography by Silver Sparrow Photography

Tell us about your dog business.
Last Christmas I started my own dog sitting business through my dad’s dog grooming shop I work at. Since we already have such a loyal clientele behind us it took off instantly and a year later I’m working two jobs seven days a week.

What have you learned about yourself running your own business?
I have learned that I can talk to anyone professionally and even though I will always get nervous I have the ability to push that aside and maintain a great positive relationship with customers and their dogs. Which is really important when taking care of someone’s pets and sometimes even staying in their home.

How has online school helped your time management to also work full time and run your own business?
Online school has been the best option for me by far. I was always one for focusing on just the school part and online allows for me to. When I have a really busy week and am dog sitting, I have the ability to sit in the house with the dogs and catch up on anything I need instead of missing school days.

How did you find and why did you choose Silver Sparrow Photography for your photographer?
I was looking online for a senior photographer and she was three minutes away for our dog grooming shop. Once I reached out to her, she made it really easy, and I never considered anyone else.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
It was amazing! Sunshine was such an amazing person and her photography is even better. She made the whole thing fun, and it totally helped since I was so nervous. We were always laughing, and she even threw in a shot of me and dad and the end.

What are you most looking forward to next in life?
I look forward to just living. My job is more than a job and once I finish school, I will finally have the chance to just live my life. All my school time can be moved to friends and family and any adventure I want. I really want to take more vacations and that is my one promise to myself to do.

If you had nothing to do and all day to do it, where would we find you?
If I had nothing to do, I would simply be home in sweats watching tv or hanging out with my friends doing something simple. Since my schedule is so busy any day that if completely free is rare so I will take it any chance I can to just relax.

Tell us about your family. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
I was raised mainly by my dad Pete, and we are two peas in a pod I’m the mini him. My mom Genevieve and I have gotten a lot closer over the years and she and her husband Andy gave me a beautiful brother Derrick who is almost ten. My little family is extended in many ways step and half but all of them are my family. Carmen and her family accepted me like my own giving my four great parent who approve everything I’m doing. Everyone in my family has the opportunity to do great things just not everyone wants it enough.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
My goal is to inspire my little brother Derrick. He has never got the opportunity to see a sibling or family member earn a high school diploma and walk across the stage. Not only am I going to give him that I’m showing him anything is possible even when you come from a family like ours.

Tell us about your volleyball career.
I started playing volleyball in the 4th grade for Conway Juniors. My mom played college volleyball and my sister played club, too. I had been around the game a lot and grew to love it. I continued to play club volleyball for six years. I started playing for Conway Christian School in 7th grade and just finished my career of high school volleyball in the fall. We made it to the semi-finals of State for the first time in six years. I led the team in kills and aces. I was selected for All-Conference, All-State, All-State tournament team, and was nominated for the Arkansas All-Star team, as well. I have been offered to continue my career at the collegiate level and am prayerfully considering my future decisions.

What do you love most about the sport?
Volleyball has been a part of my life for many years and is held near and dear to my heart. I just love the game and the competition. My favorite thing about volleyball is the relationships I’ve built and the leadership roles I’ve been given through it.

What is a favorite memory with your team?
My favorite memory with the team was winning the fifth set of the quarter-finals in the state tournament this year and securing our spot in the semi-finals.

How did you find and why did you choose SoHo Photography for your senior photographer?
She has been a close friend of my family for several years and took my sister’s senior pictures, as well. Her daughter played volleyball with me at Conway Christian. She has been a huge supporter of me in all the things I am involved in.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My shoot was one of my favorite things. Mrs. Sommer makes her models feel very confident and beautiful. Her encouragement was my favorite thing about the shoot, and she was willing to work with any of my ideas to make sure I loved my photos. She is so kind and creative.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

I am very passionate about my relationship with the Lord and God is the One who inspires me to do my very best at everything I am involved in. I love being involved in volleyball, basketball, softball, drama club, choir, student council, and chaplain for my high school sorority. Each of these things allow me to meet different people and encourage people in different ways. I love building others up and representing my peers.

What position do you play in basketball?
I am a small-forward, but I am pretty versatile and play wherever I am needed.

What is your team like and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
My team is very talented and have been playing together since the 5th grade. Our point guard, Josie Williams, is committed to playing college basketball, and she has led our team since her freshmen year. Two of my other closest friends, Kara and Mallory, are huge assets to our team. Mallory has received an offer to play at the collegiate level, as well. Kara has been playing on the Varsity team since freshmen year with Josie and is a sharp shooter. The rest of our team is pretty young, but talented and some of my best friends. I fit in by doing all that I can to hustle down the court and encourage my teammates on and off the court. I stand out by trying to always have a positive attitude, and I lead our team in prayer before every game and practice.

Tell us about softball.
I have been playing softball since the 3rd grade. I am a utility player, but last year I spent my time on the field playing 1st base. My favorite accomplishment in softball was making it to regionals last year!

What do you love most about performing?
I have always loved entertaining, no matter what I was doing, but performing is where I feel the most confident. I love being in front of a crowd and using my bubbly personality to portray dramatic characters.

What was your favorite production to perform in and why?
I have enjoyed being in three plays, but I am looking most forward to playing Shelby in Steel Magnolias in the spring. It is one of my favorite productions, and I am honored to portray a lead role, especially Shelby Eatenton.

I am a middle child, so I have loved watching my older sister go through life and then joining her in a lot of things. My brother is unbelievable talented in athletics, and my sister and I enjoy watching him do all his activities. My parents have raised us up loving the Lord and loving others. My mother is the most caring and supportive person. My father leads us so well by loving us and making our life the best possible. I could not make it anywhere without my support system!

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
If I were to present any topic to a group of my peers it would be about why my faith is so important to me. My relationship with Jesus is who I find my identity in. I try to live everyday according to His will for my life. He is the reason that I lead in different activities. I try my very hardest to love people like Jesus loved people. I have gone on mission trips out of the country and have a heart for others. I want everyone to have an opportunity of hearing about Jesus because He changes everything. He is my everything, and everything I do is for Him.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
The hardest thing I have every accomplished is taking many college courses while playing sports and maintaining a 4.0. I have accomplished this by time management and hard-work.

Tell us about your faith and why it's important to you?

To me my faith is important because it is the one thing I have always been able to count on. When everything around me is falling apart and I feel alone, I have always been able to lean on God and know that he is with me through all of it. My faith has helped me get through some of the darkest times in my life.

What have you learned about yourself through Jesus?
I have learned a lot about my identity and who I am. I am a child of God and through him I can do anything. I have learned that spreading the gospel and sharing his love with everyone around me is super important. I learned to lean on him and cast all my worries and anxieties on him.

What is your cheer squad like and where do you fit in? How do you stand out?
My cheer squad is amazing. We are all close and I share a relationship with everyone on my team. I find that I fit in almost every aspect of our team. I try to be helpful in all areas and make sure that I am keeping a positive attitude for others on the team. I think that I stand out in the aspect that they all see me as the leader on the team. They turn to me for questions and advice, and they look to me for what to do next when we are cheering.

What is a favorite memory from cheer?
I don’t know that I have one specific favorite memory from cheer. I have cheered for as long as I can remember. It has been one of my favorite memories as a whole. I have made so many amazing friends through the sport and I’ve dedicated so much of me and my time to it.

Tell us about your volleyball career.

I started volleyball in middle school. I joined my elementary school’s team and wanted to continue through high school. The thing I love most about volleyball is the thrill and excitement that comes after scoring.

What is a favorite accomplishment from volleyball?
My favorite accomplishment is making it to and participating in the TSSAA state volleyball tournament my freshman year. We didn’t make it as far as we had wanted to but getting the opportunity to play in the environment was amazing.

How long have you been playing basketball and what position do you play?
I have been playing basketball for 12 years. I play the 4 position which is a forward/post.

What do you love best about being on the team you play for?
I love the family atmosphere we have created. This team has become my second family. They are all like sisters to me. They have seen me during my worst moments and also my best. I know that I can rely on them no matter what. I also love the bond that I have created with my head coach. I’ve known her for a long time and the relationship that I have built with her is something that I will forever be grateful for. She has been a rock and a huge support in my life and is always there to guide me.

Picture
Photography by Tosca Lopez

How did you find and why did you choose Tosca Lopez for your photographer?
Tosca has been a long time family friend and I chose her because she has taken pictures of me throughout all of my life. I love how comfortable it is to take pictures with her and how she always has amazing ideas that she wants to try. Plus, her pictures always look great.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was amazing. I loved how she knew what poses would fit me and how every time she found a spot or pose she liked she would get excited. She also hyped me up the whole time. Even if I felt awkward, she made sure I knew that I looked great and that the photos were amazing.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Leadership plays a big role in my life. Not only do I lead on the basketball court, cheer platform, volleyball court, and track. I also lead in several different organizations at my school and in my community. A few organizations that I lead in are SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), HOSA, Mental Health Team, and FCA.

Which organization do you spend the most time in and why?
I spend a lot of time with the youth group at my church. I love the atmosphere and the people that I attend youth with. All my youth leaders have had such an impact on me and continue to do so every day. They have played a huge role in my life over the past year. When I lost two grandparents in the span of a week, they all made sure to text me and make sure I was doing okay. They always show the love of Christ through everything that they do, and they inspire me every day. I also spend a lot of time working with SADD. Through SADD, or Students Against Destructive Decisions, I have been able to help kids in my school. We promote mental health and the everyday safety and wellbeing of students.

What is your best leadership quality?
I think that my best leadership quality is my ability to look at things objectively and be fair. I am able to see things from both perspectives. I feel like I always take into consideration what the other person might be thinking and feeling as well. This helped me to solve many conflicts and to realize when I am in the wrong in situations.

What else would you like to talk about?
Something that is very important to me is my faith and relationship with God. I believe that having God in the center of your life and him being your foundation is very important to leading the life that you want to live. I love attending youth at First Baptist Gatlinburg with my friends on Wednesday nights and then attending Pathways on Sunday with my best friend. Spreading the word and the love of Jesus is so important to me and I have been so blessed to get to watch and lead others to the Lord in my community and on mission trips.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
The topic I would present would be the importance of mental health, because it's not only something that I have struggled with personally but also something so many people around the world have struggled with as well. In today's society we face many different challenges that can impact our mental health and with the stigma that surrounds it, it can be hard for those struggling to reach out. I think that it is a very important topic that we should not shy away from and one that we should promote the importance of.

Megan Cerda - Texas
Nomination & Photography by In Focus Photography, LLC
Issue 62 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Megan Cerda exemplifies what it means to give back. A few examples include a community coat drive for Mission Arlington, packaging food for Ukrainian refugees with Kids Against Hunger, connecting her fellow students with community service opportunities via school clubs, and more. At the same time, she has received CNA Certification, is studying for EMT certification, is in the top 2% of her class & has received numerous awards including National Hispanic Recognition 2022, Rotary Youth Leadership Award 2022, and National Youth Leadership Forum – Medicine 2022. She is truly an inspiration to so many and deserving of recognition for all her hard work.

How did you get involved in packaging food for Ukrainian refugees? Why was this an important service project for you?
I am the President of my Rotary Interact at my high school, a chapter of the city’s Rotary Club. Our city club invited us to participate in this service project for refugees. This has been an important service project because it was my first international project, but I was also able to see the numbers of how many individuals and families we impacted. We packaged over 15 thousand meals in 4 hours and being able to see the boxes of food pile up probability made this project most rewarding.

What is a CNA Certification and what does it entail?
A CNA is a certified nurse assistant and a member of the healthcare team. This job helps with the day-to-day activities of patients with physical and or mental disabilities. We help the patients with eating, personal hygiene, staying physically active, and keeping social morale up. I enrolled in my CNA classes in my junior year, completed my clinical, and then went and passed the Texas CNA Exam. One of the biggest reasons for taking this course was to gain insight into the medical field and to help my medical journey.

Picture

What are your hopes for your EMT certification?
An Emergent Medical Technician, an EMT, is an individual who works in a fire department whose job is to go out to different emergency calls including fires, car accidents, and to any medical emergency to provide care to the injured. I am hoping by taking this class and completing my certification I will gain and experience knowledge of the medical field that is unlike any other. I hope this will help me get a job during college and is another source to help guide me in the medical field.

What do you love learning about most this year in your classes?
My favorite subject has always been math. But due to certain global circumstances, I have been unable to go through a full year of a proper math class. However, this year it changed when my classes finally got back on track. In this class, I am able to catch up on units I didn’t understand and excessed in the current units. Even though math is a common core subject I am glad to remember why I love it. I know that even when I hit a wall there is something there to help me over it.

How did you find and why did you choose In Focus Photography, LLC for your senior photographer?
I found In Focus Photography through a close friend of mine who is related to Ms. Danean. My friend had asked last year if she could come and do our friend group's prom photos. And when I saw the results of these photos, I was amazed. That day there was so much chaos; however, she was able to capture peaceful moments. So when my friend mentioned she was coming down to take family photos for herself, I asked if she could take my senior photos and luckily Ms. Danean said yes. I just knew these photos would come out amazing.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Ms. Danean was wonderful. On the day of the shooting, Ms. Danean had an itinerary planned for each location. She made pictures stress-free by constantly communicating with me about where to look, what spots to be in, how the photos were coming out, etc. I loved the hype when she was taking photos because as she got more excited with each spot, so my confidence grew. This made the photos were coming out even better than before. I had an amazing time with Ms. Danean and would love to work with her again for another momentous occasion.

What are you most looking forward to in the remainder of your senior year?
I am looking forward to my top 10 percent banquet towards the end of the year. At this event, each student will pick a teacher who has impacted their education journey and say a small thank you, and the teacher will do the same in return. I am excited to celebrate not only mine, but also my friends and classmates for accomplishing something of such significance. It will be a night of being able to look back throughout the school and realize our high school years are almost over and we can go into college starting a new journey.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind after you graduate?
I hope to set a blueprint for those at my high school and those who will someday be in the shoes I was in. From covid my whole high school experience changed; I had to start fresh on how to solve problems. I want others to understand that problems can be solved. And even if I am not directly there to help I hope that the guidance I leave will be useful in some way. I want them to know that help is always there so use it.

Tell us about your swim career.
Swimming has been a part of my life since I was five. I participated in a swim club until the end of middle school and have actively been on the school swim team since sixth grade. I am now in my last year of swimming as a senior.

What do you love most about swimming?
It is a huge commitment to be a swimmer and that’s what I love about it. In order to get better you have to put in the work every single day or else you’re taking two steps backward when you miss out on just one practice. It’s got to be one of the most rewarding sports out there.

What is your favorite accomplishment from swimming?
My favorite accomplishment was at the end of my freshman year. I consistently swam a 1:15 100 YD backstroke during regular meets and when the Indiana Hoosier Conference rolled around, I dropped 6 seconds and ended up placing fifth overall. I wasn’t supposed to be on the podium at all according to the heat I was in and where I was seeded. It still keeps me motivated to this day.

What does it mean to you to be voted captain?
It means a lot to me that my team thought I deserved that high of a role. I share the duty with two other teammates and I’m excited to finish out my senior year being a role model for other swimmers who might want to lead as well.

What are your roles and responsibilities as captain?
As a team captain, my responsibilities vary from keeping the morale high to even making our own captain’s practice. I will make sure that everyone is keeping up in practice and getting in the pool on time. Even though some of the tasks I have are minor, they will shape the swim team to get better and we will work more efficiently as a family.

Tell us about your high school band. What is it like being a section leader?
The high school band I participate in has been a great program in the school’s music department for several years. I love being able to represent the flutes as their leader and mentor the younger flautists. It is a great accomplishment to see them improve and flourish under my leadership.

What is your favorite part about music?
Have you ever listened to something so beautiful that you get goosebumps? Not only can you listen to the music but you can feel it. That has to be my favorite part about any type of music.

Do you have a favorite genre of music?
My favorite genre would have to be classic rock. The ’80s and ‘90s released some of the best music of all time (in my opinion) and I’m forever thankful I was raised listening to Pearl Jam and Fleetwood Mac, etc.

Picture

What has been your favorite service project with the National Honor Society?
Last year I was on the “Bus Driver Appreciation Week” committee. We honored our bus drivers at school by giving them little doo-dads and treats that let them know we appreciate their hard work. Seeing the smiles on their faces when we handed them their gifts felt really good.

Tell us about nationals for Business Professionals of America. What was it like going 3 years in a row, what did you do there, and what did you gain from going?
BPA is an organization that should be in every school. You are able to compete in business-style events and deal with real-life scenarios in various careers. I am very thankful I was able to go to Texas and California for Nationals. Unfortunately, in 2020 I was not able to travel to D.C. due to the Coronavirus, although I have gained a lot of business-like experience from competing among other members in the organization. BPA is an opportunity to participate and simulate the business professional world at a young age.

How did you find and why did you choose Photography by Leslie Ann for your photographer?
My Stepmom, Kristen, was best friends with Leslie back when they were in high school. She ended up being the photographer for my Dad’s wedding and I couldn’t be more thankful that Leslie happened to already have ties with Kristen when my senior year rolled around. Not only is she a family friend but she also takes the most amazing shots and makes sure her clients are comfortable when shooting.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I don’t think I could have had a better experience. What photographer is willing to get knee-deep in freezing creek water in order to get amazing shots for her client? Her dedication to detail and perfection is admirable and I would never ask for it any other way. Being one of her senior representatives has been an amazing experience.

Picture
Photography by Photography by Leslie ANN

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
I battled with Trichotillomania from a very young age. “Trich” is a mental health disorder that causes you to pull out your own hair when you need a release from your anxiety and is extremely difficult to overcome. With the help of cognitive behavioral therapy and a lot of perseverance, I was able to jump over this obstacle that deeply affected my self esteem and feelings of shame.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
As cliche as it sounds, never judge a book by its cover. You will never know what’s going on behind the scenes in someone else’s life and that is not for you to assume based off a stereotype or an appearance.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself continuing to persevere and learn more about myself with the options I have for the future. It is my hope to find my true passion and turn it into something I can make a living off of. Even though I’m undecided on this path we call life, I will continue to be myself and never let anything prevent me from my full potential. Whatever it may be.

Gabriella Moraes - Colorado
Nomination by Kenna Drake
Photography by Chris Bains with Everyday Moments
Issue 61 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Gabriella Moraes always finds ways to light up a room no matter where she goes. Because of this, her strong work ethic, and many other reasons, she was chosen to be the spirit captain of her Poms/dance team. This position is typically reserved for a senior, but she was given the honor as a sophomore. Her amazing work ethic also resulted in her having a leadership position in student council. Gabriella is a straight-A student taking honors classes. Whatever the challenge may be, Gabriella finds a way to get through it and help others with their challenges along the way.

Tell us about your Poms/dance team.
The PRHS Poms/Dance team is an encouraging, fun, and uplifting group of amazing students. I joined the team the summer leading up to my freshman year of high school. We have both a Competition Team and a Halftime Team. I am not currently on our Competition Team but I am on our Halftime Team. Our Halftime Team is a spirit team that supports our school sports, performs at pep rallies, and provides overall school spirit. We currently have 17 girls, including myself.

Why did you want to join the team and where do you fit in? Where do you stand out?
I wanted to join the team because I was looking for opportunities to get involved, challenge myself with something new, and show my school spirit. Having played softball for 8 years, dance was a huge change of pace. I fit in because I am supportive and love to lift our team up. I stand out with my spirit and am often told I am one of the most spirited students in the school. I think high school is about having as much fun as possible. I want to show others they shouldn’t be ashamed of having fun at school events.

What is a favorite memory with your teammates?
My favorite memory with my teammates is probably Christmas time from freshman year. Last year during Christmas, we had so much fun as a team! We had the most amazing Christmas dresses that we performed in at our local annual Christmas tree lighting. This event hosts our entire city and surrounding areas and we were given the opportunity to dance in front of everyone. As a team we sang Christmas songs together, bought each other gifts, and had a big party. It is definitely an unforgettable memory, and is one of those core memories I will never forget.

What did it mean to you to get Spirit Captain as a sophomore?
To get Spirit Captain as a sophomore meant so much to me as it showed me that my coaches truly see my spirit and how much I love my school! Because Spirit Captain is typically reserved for a senior, it made it extra special to get it as a sophomore. The seniors on our team are so supportive of me holding a captain position despite my age. I am truly blessed and thankful to have this experience and opportunity to be Spirit Captain.

What are your roles and responsibilities as Spirit Captain?
As Spirit Captain, I choreograph sidelines to perform at football and basketball games. I also help to bring energy to the student section and gets students excited about the game. I also decide what makeup and props we will have for the theme of football games. It is so much fun and I love my role!

Picture

What is your role in the student council?
In student council I am the Bear-Leadership Chair head. I make thank-you cards for teachers who have chaperoned and helped out at school events, plan student council birthday parties, coordinate council get-together dinners, plan parties and lock-ins for the council, and I give build-a-bears to the seniors at the end of the year as a going away gift.

What have you learned about yourself as a leader in this position?
Having this position in the council, especially as a sophomore, really teaches me how to take initiative. When something isn’t going right or a plan went wrong, I jump on top of it to fix it as fast as possible. It has also taught me time management. Because of how much goes on in the school, from dances to fundraisers, I have to plan things accordingly in order for events to go as planned and work out well. It takes major time management to be able to do all that I need to do for the council.

What is your strongest leadership skill?
My strongest leadership skill is that I am dependable. People often come to me and count on me to get things done. I love getting things done in a timely manner, as it gives a sense of order to me. I believe others see this quality in me and know they can count on me to be efficient and dependable.

What is your favorite accomplishment in student council?
My favorite accomplishment in student council is coming out of my shell. Freshman year I was quiet, didn’t speak up, and would often not voice my opinions. But, because of the encouragement from my freshman year council president, Morgan Scarsbrook, I gained confidence and became more vocal. Second semester of freshman year I began to step out of my comfort zone. I realized my opinions matter and do make an impact. Because of the encouragement from Morgan, I became more vocal and I provided more ideas. This helped me gain confidence within myself, so I can be more “outspoken”.

Picture

Why is getting straight A’s important to you?
Getting straight A’s is important to me because it helps keep me focused. In my future I want to be a nurse, and getting straight A’s will help me get into the best possible nursing school available to me. Getting straight A’s will also help me keep my eyes focused on school and continue working towards what I want to be. Being focused is very important to me because it helps me be the most successful person I can be.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?
This school year I am most looking forward to running for Junior Class President or Vice President. Running for Junior Class P/VP will help keep me focused on school and it will teach me even more leadership skills. I am so excited about the possibility of representing my school in this way!

How did you find and why did you choose Everyday Moments for your photographer?
I found Chris Bains with Everyday Moments Photography through my friend, Kenna, who previously had her pictures taken by Chris. I chose Chris because as I looked through her photos, I was impressed with how her pictures looked and her overall talent. Seeing her pictures made the decision very easy to make. I have been so honored to work with Everyday Moments Photography and look forward to future session with her!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience with Everyday Moments Photography was wonderful. Chris was super sweet and kept encouraging me and bringing my confidence up. She really showed she loved her job and made the experience very fun. The part I loved the most about my shoot were the pictures I took in the water. Being in the creek with the freezing cold water rushing over my legs was exhilarating! We had a lot of laughs learning to navigate the cold water and posing in just the right way. Plus the pictures came out beautifully!

What has been your favorite service project in the NHS?
My favorite service project was working with Love the Children Ministry. I helped set up a Christmas party that is held for families that are less fortunate.

What do you do in Contac and what do you love most about it?
We have meetings once a month, always in a different place, exploring different divisions within the ODNR. For example, one time we planted flowers and other organisms at the Ohio State fairgrounds. I love learning about nature and how to conserve it. As well as meeting many new friends that without this program I would otherwise probably never meet.

What has been a favorite accomplishment with the Speech and Debate Team?
One of my favorite accomplishments with the speech and debate team is becoming more confident in my public speaking skills. I also am very proud of the improvement I have made from last year to now. I used to receive very low ranks during my rounds and now I have improved and am getting higher ranks.

In Drama Club, what has impacted you most?
The biggest impact that drama has had on me is making new friends and them helping me with my confidence when speaking in front of large crowds.

Tell us about your Spirit Team. Where do you fit in, and where do you stand out?
We set up for pep rallies. I fit in when voting on ideas on what we will do at the rallies. I stand out by bringing new ideas to the conversation.

Tell us about your softball career.
I started playing softball when I was ten years old. I have been playing for seven years. I play any outfield position but mostly left field. One of my favorite memories from softball is when my 14-U team had an undefeated season.

What do you love most about hunting and fishing?
My favorite part of hunting and fishing is spending time with my dad. Hunting and fishing are about spending time with family and friends. Coming home with a deer or some fish is just an added bonus.

How did you find and why did you choose Laura Esposito Photography, LLC for your photographer?
I found Laura Esposito when I was in a pageant, and she took my photo for the local paper. I chose her because I loved the picture she took for the paper as well as the many senior portraits she has done.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
I had a very positive experience. I loved that when taking pictures, I was able to be myself and show my personality in every picture.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Some things inspiring about me are that I am reliable, courageous, and forgiving. When I say I am going to do something I follow through. I am always there for my friends and family when they need me. I am always willing to try new things and meet new people. An example of my forgiveness is that after an argument, I am quick to diffuse the situation and quick to forgive.

Tell us about your family and what you love doing with them most.
I am an only child I live with my mom and dad, and they are my best friends. I love when we have get togethers with my other family and friends. I like when everyone is all together. I love going to Church with them on Sundays.

What is your favorite memory with your friends?
One of my favorite memories with my friends was going to Country Fest this summer.
I went with my parents and my best friend. We spent the whole week together. We went up early every day and met so many new people. We got to see our favorite country artist Morgan Wallen.

What else would you like to talk about?
I would like to talk about volunteering as well as my volunteer experiences. I love being able to give to others as well as advocate for issues that are not often discussed. I have worked with LifeBanc, Love the Children Ministry, and am a member of the Ohio Department of National Resources teen advisory board (CONTAC).

Tell us more about your volunteer experiences.
I have been volunteering with LifeBanc as long as I can remember. I have spoken at various events with my family. I do this to encourage others to become organ donors because I have received the gift of life

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why?
I would present the topic of organ donation to my peers. The reason I am so passionate about organ donation is because without it I would not be alive today. I believe people don’t understand the impact organ donation can have on someone and their family due to lack of education surrounding this topic.

Tell us about your business.
I started my own business to make extra money on the side- that was my main motivation. I started my business when I was 16 years old. Initially I offered pressure washing services, but then expanded and offered a variety to include, mowing, trimming, deck staining, mulching and flower bed clean up. Do you do it by yourself or do you have help? Most jobs I can do myself, however, there have been a few really large deck staining projects that I have hired my school peers to help with.

What was the hardest thing about getting it going?
The hardest thing about getting my business going was building new clients and saving for my own zero turn mower. What was the most satisfying? The most satisfying thing was receiving customer feedback on the job well done and getting calls from new customers that were referred to me by previous clients that were more than happy with the work I performed. I was also able to purchase t-shirts, lawn signs and my own truck detail to extend my advertising.

What do you love most about running your own business?
What I love most about running my own business is I can make my own schedule around my other school and part time job commitments. I can make more money and save with having this flexibility.

Tell us about the work ethic you need to start your own successful business.
I needed to show up when I said I was going to show up and do the job to meet the homeowners’ expectations. It came easy for me because I love doing anything outside.

What have you learned about yourself from owning your own business?
I have learned I am able to manage more than what I thought I was capable of. I also learned that I am good at talking with customers and gaining a good rapport.

What has been your favorite welding project?

My favorite welding project was a fire stick, I added my own unique twist to my fire poke stick, and it was a challenge for me.

What is your part time job and what have you learned about working for others?
I work part time as an assembler as JLG. I assemble JLG lifts.

How did you find and why did you choose 707 photos for your photographer?
My brother used 707 photos last year for his senior pictures and the photographer really went beyond and above for capturing his photos, and I knew Nate would do the same for mine.

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
My experience was awesome! The day started out with a surprise heavy fog! Nate came up with the idea to hike up a top of the mountain to get the fog in the background. It took a while for us and my parents to hike to the top, but the pictures were totally worth it!

What has been the best part of your senior year so far, and what are you most looking forward to before it's over?
The best part of my senior year so far is hanging out with my friends and riding our dirt bikes. I am looking forward to more riding at the track!

How would your friends describe you?
My friends would describe me as crazy, but I’m going to take that as they would mean a risk taker.

Where would we find you if you had nothing to do and all day to do it?
If I had nothing to do and all day to do it you would find me outdoors hunting, riding my dirt bike and spending time with Adi.

What is a favorite family memory?
My favorite family memory is our trip to Jamacia last year.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
Just recently l, I stopped and rendered aid to an Amish boy hit by a car. I consider myself a thoughtful person and I hope I inspire other kids to do the right thing in a time of need.

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
Starting my own business was the hardest thing I have ever accomplished. I took one day at a time, bounced ideas off my parents and with my teacher Ms. H.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Have a plan, people who support you and a go getter attitude is advice I would give to someone who wants to be where I am at today.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?
I see myself living in Florida with Adi, and welding hopefully with my own business.

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
My favorite activity is hunting and riding my dirt bike.

3 Things on your bucket list:
Three things on my bucket list are to save enough money to purchase a new diesel pickup truck, travel as much as I can for fun, and also to expand my business at Florida.

Who do you find inspiring?
Successful people who have worked hard for what they have. It’s easy to have something if it was handed to you, but if you’ve worked for it then that is something inspiring to me.

What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring?
Having my own business and working hard I think would inspire others. I hope others are inspired to start their own business at a young age too!

Madeleine Wentz

Madeleine Wentz – Texas
Nomination by Madyson Heaton
Photography by Vanessa Hendrickson - Contemporary Portraits
Issue 61 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: I’ve been friends with Madeleine Wentz since seventh grade in middle school, and we are now seniors in high school. I can say with full confidence that she is the most honest, bubbly, and genuine person I’ve ever met. Not only is she an amazing writer, actress, and singer, but she’s a beautiful person inside and out! Everyone needs a friend like Madeleine; she lights up every room she walks into and has such a promising, inspiring future ahead of her.

Tell us about your friendship with Madyson.
Madyson and I have been friends since 7th grade when we met at a new student orientation. Funnily enough, the reason I introduced myself was because she was also tall. We’ve been through thick and thin together, but have always stuck by each other’s sides. We love to get our nails done, get dressed up and take photos (thanks to our fabulous photographer for that), and perform together. Our company is honestly best kept through conversation, making each other laugh and smile by catching each other up on our lives. I love Madyson so much and I’m proud of all she’s accomplished.

How did you find and why did you choose Vanessa Hendrickson for your photographer?
My aforementioned friend Madyson who nominated me was a senior model before me for Vanessa, and I loved the photos she had taken of her. I had never taken professional photos before this, yet Vanessa makes me feel so comfortable and confident during sessions. Her vision and creativity for certain shots is something I’m glad I get to benefit from. Vanessa is so wonderful and talented, and I am so thankful to have her as my photographer!

What has been a favorite memory so far in your senior year?
In all honesty, senior year has been far more stressful than it has been fun. But I did enjoy performing Les Miserables at my school! It was a truly mesmerizing production, I’m so proud of everyone who was a part of it. Les Mis brought tears to many eyes, including my grandparents’ who were still teary when I saw them after curtain call. I’m glad to have gotten that amazing experience, it was a production I won’t soon forget.

What do you love about acting that makes you want to do it again and again?

I started acting when I was just 6 years old and I played Jojo in Seussical for my first show. I was the youngest member of the all-ages cast but never felt out of place. My fellow kids were like my older siblings and the adults like my aunts and uncles. That feeling of family is what made me fall in love with theatre, and since then I have made lifelong friendships through acting. Theatre is a gift to those on stage, behind the curtain, and in the audience. It transforms lives, inspires people, and lets them know that they belong.

Tell us about a favorite role you've played?
Last year I played the role of the Librarian, Renee, in the play Kodachrome. I felt challenged by this role because I had to tap into a range of emotions that I hadn’t expressed on stage before, including regret, grief, and romance. I got to deliver a touching monologue kneeling before a grave that is to this day my favorite scene I’ve ever done. The show overall was inspirational and poignant, and the cast & crew so supportive and gifted. Renee helped me grow as an actress, and I’m forever grateful to my director for giving me that opportunity.

What other hobbies do you have?

I love reading, writing, making & listening to music, and traveling! I have a goal of visiting 100 countries within my lifetime! I’m an avid reader, so much so that I’ve run out of room on my bookshelves, and I particularly love classics, historical fiction, and fantasy. I also play Dungeons and Dragons, for which I am currently a dungeon master, aka the one creating and driving the story. D&D is a lot of fun, a fantastic storytelling and acting game, and brings my friends and I closer together.

Where has your favorite travel destination been?
100 words simply isn’t enough to explain my trip this past summer to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England! Those 10 days changed my life by unearthing areas of growth, rekindling old passions, and widening my worldview. The trip was through EF with other kids my age, and though I knew no one going into it, I came home with some of my closest friends. With these former strangers I ran through ancient castles, danced in the rain, belted pub songs, and marveled over history and architecture. The British Isles are naturally and culturally beautiful, and I will someday be back.

What type of music do you like?
I love folk music, alternative rock, old school R&B, and practically anything my dad introduces me to. A lot of my music taste comes from my dad, who would sing me Frank Sinatra as lullabies before bed when I was little. I love to sing showtunes, acoustic folk songs as I strum along with my guitar, and songs that I can belt on roadtrips. My playlists are filled with music that is both sonically and lyrically beautiful. Some of my favorite artists include Hozier, Lord Huron, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Sammy Rae and The Friends, and Noah Kahan.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I could (and have) talked for hours about books! It’s fascinating how a good book can contribute so much to a person's development and attitude, and change the way we view ourselves and the world. Some of my favorite/most influential novels I’ve read are Anne of Green Gables, Fahrenheit 451, and Good Omens. I have learned from and been inspired by literature all my life. I started writing at the age of four, and that hobby has persisted to this day. I hope that my writing will someday inspire others the way books have inspired me.

What do you like to write about?
I’m a fantasy author! I’ve been working on a novel I started in 4th grade. I wrote about 100 pages between the ages of 10 & 13, then read it back my freshman year and thought, “well, there’s bones here…” Since then I have been worldbuilding, developing characters, creating themes, and threading everything together into a cohesive story. My novel features government corruption, unlikely romance, and elemental magic. This story means everything to me; I could ramble forever about what it represents and the effect I hope it'll have on readers. Its publication will be my proudest accomplishment.

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?
I pride myself on my individuality and confidence! I possess a strong sense of self, have never tried to change myself to fit in, and use my own abundance of confidence to instill that same spirit in others. I have a positive outlook that I've been told radiates to those around me, brightening their day. I'm also an exceptional advisor to friends in times of need, and I use my gifts to advocate for the issues I'm passionate about.

What are you most looking forward to next?
I’m looking forward to Christmas break because I get to see my family and friends! My grandparents are coming into town from Florida, and all of my college friends will be back for at least 2-weeks to a month. Plus, all of my college and scholarship applications will be in by then and admissions letters (hopefully) arriving. It’ll be so nice to get a chance to breathe in the cold air and Christmas spirit, relax with some hot chocolate, and spend time with those I love.

Picture
Taken by a friend for my use. Description: Taken at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland this past June. Edinburgh is my favorite city I've ever been to because of its history, architecture, and culture.

What else would you like to talk about?
About 7 years ago my family began sponsoring a Rwandan girl through the Christian non-profit organization Food for the Hungry. Our monthly donation provides her with basic necessities like education and clean water. She’s my penpal, too, sending me news and drawings about her village, friends, and family. Her letters always seem to arrive just when I need them most. Our correspondence has taught me that selflessness and the love of God are stronger than language, cultural, and class barriers. If you have the means, please consider donating or sponsoring a child through FFTH, for they are changing lives.

Katelyn Bradshaw - Missouri
Nomination & Photography by Switch Focus Studios
Issue 61 of Inspiring Teens Magazine

Nomination: Katelyn Bradshaw - I have been photographing her and her family for years. I have enjoyed watching her mature into a young woman and I am inspired by her love for Family! This family is close and they have so much fun together. They always include their FUR baby Nicole into photos and they treat that dog like a family member. Katelyn is wise beyond her years and she has her priorities set. She is a joy to be around and I can't wait to watch her spread her wings and fly! We need more young people with a heart like Katelyn!

Photography by Switch Focus Studios

How did you find and why did you choose Switch Focus Studio for your photographer?
When our photographer was just starting out, she worked with my mom in another industry. Once she decided to be a photographer full time, we had her take our family’s picture. We loved her energy and how the pictures turned out. She has been our photographer for the last 12 years!

What was your experience like? What did you love most about it?
Diana always comes up with very unique location to take our pictures. She has a vision and is so talented and very easy to work with.

Tell us about your family and where you fit in. Where do you stand out?
I am the baby of the family. I have one older brother who is away at college. We both have our endearing qualities, but I would say I am more artistic than my brother.

What is your favorite family memory?
My favorite family memory is our trip we took this last summer to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Our goal when we left was to see a bear in its natural environment. On an early morning hike, we saw a black bear enjoying its breakfast of berries! It was a sight I’ll never forget!

What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover?

My love of vocal music is something that has inspired me to work hard and try new things. I've learned that in order to succeed you must sometimes step out of your comfort zone, be persistent and practice! I am starting to see the benefits of my hard work. I am very proud of my academic success and equally as important the wonderful friendships I've developed in high school. I believe that my strong work ethic and dedication to being a good person will help me succeed next year when I head to college.

What type of music do you love most to sing?
I love all kinds of music! In my honors choir, I’ve been exposed to all different kinds of music. I really enjoy singing songs in foreign languages- especially Italian. I also love to sing Disney songs and songs from movies I love- the songs I’ve grown up with.

Do you have a favorite go-to song and if so what is it?
Somewhere over the Rainbow- I am a big Wizard of Oz fan.

What opportunities have you had as a vocal musician?
Our choral director does a great job of giving us opportunities to showcase our talent. Last Easter, our choir sang at Carnegie Hall in New York City. I was a once in a lifetime opportunity to sing in such a historic venue. A memory I will never forget!

Why is academics important to you?
Academics is important to me because I know that learning and getting good grades will help me achieve my goals. I know that the skills I’ve learned in high school will help me excel in college.

Tell us about your friends and what you like to do together.
I have the best friends, many of them I’ve had since elementary school. We love to go to football games, go shopping and just hang out.

How would your friends describe you?
Happy, energetic, funny. Someone who would do anything to help a friend.

What else would you like to talk about?
I'm very proud of my achievements through high school. I'm in the top 10% of my class, a member of National Honors Society, IB Spanish, Sounds of Summit honors Choir and all District Choir. I am a member of the Lee's Summit High School women's swim and dive team, Lee's Summit softball and Windsboro Waves summer recreational swim league.

What has your favorite service project in the NHS been?
Recently we had a large group of kids participate in a local highway clean-up. I enjoyed helping beautify our community and spending time with my friends. It’s amazing what you’ll find on the side of the road!

Picture
Photography by Switch Focus Studios

What is IB Spanish and what do you do in it?

IB Spanish is short for International Baccalaureate Spanish which is an honors class with accelerated pace and a more in-depth instruction. This is my fifth year of Spanish and we focus on learning through conversation and studying Spanish culture. I’m also a part of the Spanish National Honors Society.

What has been a favorite memory from Sounds of Summit honors choir?
I’ve enjoyed the outreach to the local elementary students. We when go to the elementary schools and sing for the kids it helps create interest in choir. The success of our music program is dependent on the new students that enter middle and high school. This type of outreach is how I became interested in singing many years ago. I heard this choir sing many years ago and I told myself that I would be a part of that group when I was old enough- and now I am.

What has been a favorite accomplishment from the District Choir?
Trying out and making district choir is an accomplishment in itself. Over 30 schools send students to try out for this one mass choir. I wasn’t going to try out because I wasn’t sure if I would be selected. Luckily, I was able to set my nerves aside and go for it.

Tell us about your swim and dive career.
My parents knew that swimming was an important skill to have and started me in swim lessons when I was 6. I loved being in the water and asked to join our neighborhood recreational swim team when I was 8. I had so much fun and many of my friends were also on the team. Then in middle school, I joined a competitive swim team and learned how to fine tune my strokes and improve my time. When I went to high school, I joined to girls’ swim team and now I’m in my last year.

What position do you play in softball and what do you love most about it?
I’ve played softball since I was 6 years old. My favorite position is left field, but I play wherever I am needed. I love the competition and the friendships I’ve made over the years.

If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be?
I would love to talk about school/ life balance. Academics is so important to help you achieve your goals, but not at the expense of living the best teenage life. Time management and muti-tasking in the high school environment is a skill everyone should learn, and I believe I've mastered it!

What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it?
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today?
Work hard and put the time into something you love- that’s how you excel!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans?

What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination?
Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

3 Things on your bucket list
