The Nomination, by Jessica Robertson: Not only is Cole an amazing athlete, but an awesome person too! His strength of character is what makes him so unique. Cole has a clear vision of what he wants in life and he makes decisions accordingly. He is respectful, kind, and a leader when it is not always easy. I feel honored to know him and his family!
What are some of your favorite sports and why? Baseball and basketball are my favorite sports. I began playing Tee-ball at the age of five. As I grew older, I played on travel teams and worked with private coaches. My dad and I have always worked at baseball every day – whether we are pitching, batting, lifting, doing long toss, etc. I really value this time together. Basketball is a sport I play for fun. I grew up playing in local rec leagues, and today, I play on my High School team. As a Captain, it has given me a leadership opportunity. I help to encourage my teammates to play better and more effectively. I also enjoy helping Coach younger teams.
What is your work ethic like? There are mornings when my alarm goes off a 4:30am. I can be found working out/doing drills – all in the spirit of getting better! This is important to me, because with every ounce of hard work I’ve poured into the game, I can see the rewards and benefits. I was raised to give 120% effort in everything I do. I have goals and dreams, and I know being great doesn’t happen overnight. I think others look up to me and want to be like me, because I’m successful both on the field/court and in the classroom.
What is something you want others to know about you? I want others to know that I look for the best in everyone. My coaches have often said, “There is no letter ‘I’ in the word Team”. In sports, I place my teammates first. We win as a team, and we lose as a team. I use this lens in my daily life, as well. I go out of my way to make others feel included. Nothing saddens me more than to see someone sitting by themselves during lunch. If I see this, instead of sitting with my friends, I will introduce myself and ask of I can sit down so they aren’t eating by themselves. I believe in leading by example. I hope my actions inspire others to think, behave and act differently, especially towards one another.
What are 3 things you like to do in your free time? In my free time, you will find me playing a pick-up game of basketball, playing video games with friends (this relieves my stress), or I can be found watching my favorite college basketball team – Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). I’ve been going to VCU basketball games since I was born, and in 2011, my entire family traveled to watch VCU compete in the NCAA Final Four!
What are your plans for after graduation? I plan to study Business and play baseball in college. My ultimate dream is to be a Pitcher in the MLB. I know doing well and succeeding doesn’t come without hard work. I believe baseball has helped prepare me, allowing me to learn how to manage my time and to always feel confident, prepared and ready for the challenges college will face me with.
