Michaelyn Sample - Kentucky Nomination by Makenney Alsobrook Photography by Laney Fletcher Photography Issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine
Nomination: Michaelyn is the most loving, hardworking sister, aunt, student, daughter and friend anyone could ask for. She puts 110% into everything she does. She is her own worst critic because she wants to do everything just perfect. She loves with all her heart and gives like Jesus would want her too. She is so good with children. They love her. She will help anyone in anyway she can. Michaelyn is the middle sibling with me as big sister and little brother xander. She participates in FFA, Soccer, National Honor Society and church on top of school. She is taking 5 college classes as a JR in high school this semester! She deserves to be recognized for all her accomplishments. She has a beautiful voice too and sang and played guitar at my wedding. My sister is blessed with talent! She has won multiple speech competitions through FFA and competed Regionally! She also won locally and in the district last year for a talent competition for FFA. My sister is a go getter in all she does.¹

What are some of the things you love to do with children? I love to dance around with kids. Kids don’t care what people think so they dance with their whole heart. It is very fun and they teach me so much.
What else should we know about you? I am an FFA officer which is a pretty cool accomplishment for me, it has led to me being able to go on many trips through my school and experience and learn a great deal. I also get a lot of leadership experience this way as I am expected to help run meetings for the school club with my amazing executive team. I have always been somewhat shy and FFA has really made me more outgoing.
What has been a favorite accomplishment with FFA? As a freshman I was on the senior parli team and got to compete with all the older kids. It was a big responsibility, but I was incredibly proud to be selected by my peers and advisors for the task.
What leadership experiences have you received through it. I was able to attend Kentucky FFA Camp and Leadership Training Center this past year and learned a lot about planning events and setting goals for teams. I also help plan monthly meetings for our school.
How are you involved with the NHS? Tell us about a favorite community service project in the NHS that you've participated in. I am able to do a lot of my community service on my own. I have helped decorate for weddings, passed out food to the homeless in Nashville, I have also taught third graders about where their food comes from, and ran pedal pulls at our local festivals. My personal favorite was Farm to Plate Where I got to teach the third graders about food origins.
Tell us about your Soccer career. I have played soccer since I was six years old. I love playing even if we don’t always win. I was very fortunate to get to play even through the pandemic. My all-time favorite memory is winning in a pk shootout that had been delayed for two weeks my sixth grade year. It was absolutely amazing.
What type of music do you like to sing? Do you have a go-to song? I like a little bit of everything when it comes to music, but I tend to lean toward very emotional songs because I like to sing with lots of emotion. My go to songs are Tin Man by Miranda Lambert and Traveling Soldier by the chicks.
What was your photo shoot like with Laney Fletcher Photography? It was my sister's wedding. Laney is amazing and made the atmosphere so fun; she also kept things professional when the time called for it.
What inspiring things about you does your nomination not cover? I am included in a large group of American teens (one in five) that suffer from mental illness. I particularly struggle with anxiety. It has been a large part of my life ever since I was a little and I used to be very ashamed of the way I felt, and sometimes I still am, but I believe there is a reason God has put this in my story. I can relate to people in an entirely new way because of it and tell how my amazing God brings me out of even my darkest days.
If you were to present a topic to a group of your peers, what would it be and why? I could talk forever to my peers about how being different is not a bad thing. The things we think are odd about ourselves and the things we keep hidden are the things that make us extraordinary. God doesn't make mistakes and we should never feel ashamed.
What is the hardest thing you have ever accomplished, and how did you do it? I had to admit to my mom that I needed to talk to someone about my anxiety. I was terrified but I had to remember that getting better wasn’t just something I was doing for me, but for everyone around me.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be where you are today? Pray about everything!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years/what are your plans? I want to be a behavioral analyst and work with kids who have special needs on their behavioral and communication issues.
What is your favorite activity or pastime that was not in your nomination? I love to watch friends. It’s been my favorite show since elementary school.
3 Things on your bucket list -go to Greece -Touch an exotic animal -do something crazy like skydiving
Who do you find inspiring? I think someone who is afraid but faces the fear is someone who I respect highly and they inspire me to do the same.
What about you inspires others/why do you think you are inspiring? I think that me facing my mental health issues head on is inspiring. From my experience, I know how hard it can be. I hope people see that I did it and know they can do it too. Look for Michaelyn in issue 50 of Inspiring Teens Magazine!
