Experiencing Peace Camp - By Emma Dickinson
This summer I had the privilege of volunteering as an Advocate in Training (AIT) at Peace Works Camp! Peace Works Camp is sponsored by a Woman’s Place, which is a nonprofit organization. A Woman's Place envisions a society where all individuals are safe in their relationships and can flourish.
The purpose of the camp was to engage all campers in activities, games, and crafts that focus on building positive self-esteem, developing leadership skills, promoting healthy relationships and encouraging teamwork. There were many team building activities for boys and girls in grades K-5. I was able to help campers with an activity that required them to create the tallest structure out of spaghetti and marshmallows.
Peace Works Camp hopes that campers will walk away with a self-worth, respect for their peers, healthy friendship building skills and lots of fantastic memories. I enjoyed helping the younger kids with all of the activities and ensuring that everyone had an enjoyable time. Volunteering was a very enjoyable experience and I hope to do it again next summer.
